About the Author
GERALD J. ALREDis professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he teaches courses in professional writing and directs the Graduate Certificate Program in International Technical Communication. He received the 2004 Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication from the Society for Technical Communication. CHARLES T. BRUSAW is a business-writing consultant for corporations worldwide. He worked for twenty years as a technical writer for the NCR Corporation and has also worked in advertising, public relations, and curriculum development. WALTER E. OLIU until recently served as Chief of the Publishing Services Branch at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He is a communications consultant in the Washington, D.C. area and has taught at Miami University of Ohio, Slippery Rock State University, and Montgomery College. All three are co-authors of The Business Writer's Handbook, Ninth Edition; the Handbook of Technical Writing, Ninth Edition; and Writing That Works, Tenth Edition.

Not Really Needed for Course

It is a sprial bound book. I barely, if at all, used this book for class. The material it covers can be useful, but the book is not that good. Maybe that I associate the uselessness of this course with the book, but this is one course book I wish I had not bought. Depending on your professor you might have to buy it to complete book assignments specifically from the book. My professor said they were going to do that, and then never did. So...this is really a 50/50 chance and decision on your part.

Nice reference book

This is a text book for one of my courses. I really enjoyed reading and referring this book whenever I write for business presentations, networking or for my classroom assignments. I am international student and I find this very useful; however, if you are and expert and looking for 'in depth' suggestions, this may not be the book for you.

The picture gives you the perception tha book is bigger. The actual size is pocket format and I had hard time reading it. I do not like how it is organized. It was one of my books for grad school communication class but I think there are much better books out there.

X. J. KENNEDY is an acclaimed poet, children's writer, college teacher, and textbook author. She has taught composition at the University of Michigan and Ohio University and, with X. J. The Bedford Reader book is well written and explains the writing process in a manner to make it easy to understand. I have taken other writing classes with different books, they made the process confusing and difficult.

About the Author
Victoria Bissell Brown is the L.F. Parker Professor of History at Grinnell College, where she teaches Modern U.S. History, U.S. Women’s History, and U.S. Immigration History. She is the author of The Education of Jane Addams and the editor of the Bedford/St. Martin’s edition of Jane Addams’s Twenty Years at Hull-House. Her articles have appeared in Feminist Studies, The Journal of Women’s History, and The Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society. She has served as a Book Review Editor for The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and for the Women and Social Movements website. Timothy J. Shannon is professor of History at Gettysburg College, where he teaches Early American and Native American History. His other books include Iroquois Diplomacy on the Early American Frontier, Atlantic Lives: A Comparative Approach to Early America, and Indians and Colonists at the Crossroads of Empire: The Albany Congress of 1754, which received the Dixon Ryan Fox Prize from the New York State Historical Association and the Distinguished Book Award from the Society of Colonial Wars. His articles have appeared in the William and Mary Quarterly, Ethnohistory, and the New England Quarterly, and he has been a research fellow at the Huntington Library and John Carter Brown Library.

It's alright

The shipping was fast. I ordered it Friday and it arrived Monday but I did order express. The book itself looks like it passed through a couple of hands. None of the pages are torn and it's still in good condition. Overall, for my needs this book is what I was looking for. I would prefer that it looked better, but it's less pressure on me to keep it spotless.

About the Author

Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. He is also the puzzlemaster on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday and is founder and director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. NY Times crossword books are the best.

The Monday crosswords from the Times are not too easy, but not too tough either.. Even on the Monday crosswords there's always a few twists and turns in them keep them interesting.

I have Volumes 7 thru 13 of this spiral bound Easy Mondays crossword book series.. Yes some of the clues may get a little repetitious from puzzle to puzzle, and from book to book.. But so far I haven't had any puzzle that was an exact duplicate of another puzzle in this series of books.. That's 350 puzzles and no duplicates, so far..

And that's pretty good, IMO..

So much fun!

I love this series of crossword puzzle books. (Notice the volume numbers; there are several volumes available from Amazon in this series.) The Monday puzzles are easy, but not too easy. I also like the spiral binding format, so you can fold back the cover and have it underneath while you are working.

Janet E. Gardner, an associate professor of English at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, has published several essays on contemporary drama and pedagogy. She is editor of 12 Plays: A Portable Anthology (Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2003).

Awesome deal great

A required book for a summer literature class, the search was made easy when Amazon found this one cent deal. With only shipping costs, it was beyond a deal. The funny part when when the college professor went around the class asking how much the textbooks costs for students, used and new. The average used was 75.00 Imagine when one cent was stated as the cost.

REBECCA EDWARDS is a Professor of History at Vassar College. Her research interests focus on the post-Civil War era and include electoral politics, environmental history, and the history of women and gender roles. She is the author of Angels in the Machinery: Gender in American Party Politics from the Civil War to the Progressive Era and New Spirits: Americans in the "Gilded Age," 1865-1905. She is currently working on a biography of women's rights advocate and People's Party orator Mary E. Lease. ROBERT O. SELF is an Associate Professor of History at Brown University. His research focuses on urban history, the history of race and American political culture, post-1945 U.S. society and culture, and gender and sexuality in American politics. His first book, American Babylon: Race and the Struggle for Postwar Oakland, won four professional prizes, including the James A. Rawley prize from the Organization of American Historians (OAH). He is currently at work on a book about gender, sexuality, and political culture in the United States from 1964 to 2004. JAMES A. HENRETTA is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park. His publications include The Evolution of American Society, 1700–1815: An Interdisciplinary Analysis; “Salutary Neglect”: Colonial Administration under the Duke of Newcastle; Evolution and Revolution: American Society, 1600–1820; The Origins of American Capitalism; and an edited volume, Republicanism and Liberalism in America and the German States, 1750–1850. Dry, with serious factual flaws

Over the past year I have had the opportunity to compare this book with Roark's The American Promise, and I would highly recommend Roark over this book.

The most serious flaw of the Henretta text is its cavalier attitude toward the facts. This is worst in its section on World War II. For example, on pages 800-801, we read "In July 1943 after Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime fell and Mussolini was executed, Italy's new government joined the Allies." Of course, in reality, Mussolini was promptly restored to power by German occupation and did not die until 1945; nor was he executed, but rather murdered by partisans without benefit of trial. On page 805, we read that "The capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa put bombers in position to attack Japan itself," when in fact it was the previous year's capture of the Marianas that put the Japanese islands in U.S. bomber range. In the very same paragraph, we read that "Before the Soviets could act, the Japanese offered to surrender on August 10," but in reality the USSR had declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945 and had invaded Japanese-held Manchuria on August 9. This oversight is particularly important, in that some historians argue that it was the Soviet declaration of war as much as the atomic bombs that convinced Japan to surrender.

That the book frequently lapses into tendentious left-wing ideology hardly needs mentioning; the vast majority of academic history textbooks today have the same problem, and non-academic right-wing "correctives," like Thomas Woods, are usually even worse. Still, left-wing writing need not be bad writing, nor as distorting to the historical record as this text's often is. For example, on page 519 we find this passage: "In Europe job-seeking peasants commonly tried seasonal agricultural labor or temporary work in nearby cities. America represented merely a larger leap." This is a feeble attempt to pretend that late-19th and early 20th century Europe offered opportunities similar to America's, and, if accepted, renders America's massively larger immigration rate inexplicable.

As might be expected in a book co-authored by three people, the quality varies considerably from chapter to chapter. Chapter 18, "The Rise of the City," stands out as particularly well written. One good technique the authors use is to place U.S. history in its international context, as when comparing the urban history of Chicago to Berlin or pointing out the origin of Chinese immigration to America in a general flood of Chinese immigration throughout the Pacific in the 19th century. It is only in this respect that this text is superior to Roark, which often skimps on the world-historical setting of U.S. history.

While the authors deserve commendation for trying to address the history of American racial minorities, their efforts usually devolve into a mere listing of grievances, especially as regards Native Americans and Latinos; African American achievements and resistance to prejudice are somewhat better described. Women's history comes off best; the authors are generally, though not always, successful in describing women's experience as an integrated whole in which men's oppressive behavior is only one part.

The book's overwhelming drawback compared to Roark is the poverty of illustrations, which are few, ill-chosen, and exclusively black-and-white. In contrast, the maps are excellent.

I can understand that cash-strapped colleges may prefer this book to Roark because it is cheaper. Still, it should have been possible to create a budget college textbook that was more accurate and less biased.

very readable; the narrative flows gracefully

The authors had a difficult task. To further shorten their other text, "America's History", by almost 50%. Yet they seem to have succeeded. The book has a logical narrative flow. That does not feel like a standard text. Quite expertly done. When you consider that very disparate topics are covered. Good history book for summer class

This book was a required reading in a short summer history class. The book reads well and is relatively easy to get through. The chapters are organized into sections based on events, so there were some time jumps that I found confusing, but other than that this was one of the best class books I've had.
