Not "challenging", but great for beginning Mental KenKen
By J. Lee
If you want to start doing KenKen without taking notes, and doing it all in your head instead, this is the perfect book to segue into doing just that! The title is misleading in that it really isn't "challenging" per se, I would label it "intermediate" instead. The book contains 65 4x4 puzzles, 85 5x5 puzzles, 65 6x6 puzzles and 85 7x7 puzzles.

Not what I expected after "looking inside"
By SGardiner
I love Ken Ken puzzles that are challenging and this book falls WAY short in the department (no pun intended). When I "looked inside" I found examples of the level of puzzle I like. Unfortunately, the first 65 are 4X4s, the next 83 are 5X5s, the following 65 are 6X6s and the remaining puzzles are 7X7s . . . hardly what I'd call challenging. If you like 8X8s or 9X9, don't buy this book. It's a complete waste of money. Check out Tetsuya Miyamotos "Martial Arts" series instead.

difficulty way over-rated
By don_in_montana
If you're reasonably good at Kenken, you will not find very many of these 300 puzzles to be "diabolical". The 5 x 5's can mostly be done just about as fast as you can write. There were about 20 puzzles among the 7x7s and 9x9's which truly fit the description. Still, I enjoyed them.

In 1973, a volcanic eruption buried an entire Icelandic village in lava and ash. Now, hoping to make some cash, a crew is assembled to excavate the site and turn it into a tourist destination. Markús, who was a teenager when the volcano erupted, enlists the help of attorney Thóra Gudmundsdóttir to try to prevent the excavation from going forward.

When the digging continues and three fresh bodies (and a spare head) turn up in the basement of Markús' childhood home, Thóra begins to question Markús' motives for wanting to stop the excavation. His explanation for the bodies is complicated, and the locals seem oddly reluctant to back him up. As Markús' story begins to unravel, Thóra finds herself with an impossible task, defending Markús while trying to solve a quadruple murder that may very well implicate her client.

“You’re trying to tell me Markús is just tidying the basement? You can’t possibly believe that a pile of rubbish is the reason that he didn’t want anyone to go down there before him?”
The lawyer Thóra Gudmundsdóttir smiled politely at the man addressing her, an archaeologist called Hjörtur Fridriksson, but did not answer his question. This was getting out of hand. She was very uncomfortable; the smell of smoke and the ash hanging in the air were irritating her eyes and nose, and she was scared that the roof was going to collapse at any moment. On their way through the house to the basement door the three of them had had to make their way around a huge pile of ashy debris where the roof had collapsed onto the intricately patterned carpet, at which point Thóra had adjusted her helmet’s elastic chin-strap to ensure that it was fastened tightly. She shuffled her feet and looked embarrassedly at the clock. They heard a dull thud from the basement. What exactly was the man up to? Markús had said that he needed a little time, but neither she nor the archaeologist could guess what his definition of “a little” was. “I’m sure he’ll reappear soon,” she said, without much conviction, and stared at the crooked door in the hope that it would be pushed open and this business concluded. She glanced instinctively at the ceiling, ready to jump away if it appeared likely to crash down on them.
“Don’t worry,” said Hjörtur, pointing upward. “If the roof was going to split apart it would have done so a long time ago.” He heaved a sigh and stroked his unshaven chin. “Do you know what he’s doing down there?”
Thóra shook her head, unwilling to discuss her client’s plans with someone unconnected to the case.
“He must have at least hinted,” said Hjörtur. “We’ve been dying to find out about this.” He looked at Thóra. “I’ll bet this has something to do with pornography. The others think so, too.”
She shrugged. That thought had certainly occurred to her as well, but she did not have a sufficiently fertile imagination to guess what kind of thing would be too embarrassing or disgusting to show to a stranger. A film of the homeowner’s sexual adventures? Unlikely. Few people had video cameras in the 1970s, and she doubted that the type of film used back then would have survived the destruction that had rained down on the Islands. Besides, Markús Magnússon, who was down in the basement, had been only fifteen when the house had disappeared beneath lava and ash, so he probably hadn’t been ready for much in that area. Nevertheless, there was something down in the basement that he’d been desperate to get to before them. Thóra sighed. How did she keep ending up with these characters? She didn’t know any other lawyer who attracted such strange cases, and such peculiar clients. She resolved to ask Markús what had inspired him to call her little legal firm instead of one of the larger ones when he decided to demand that the excavation be legally blocked. If he ever returned from the basement. She pulled the neck of her jumper up over her mouth and nose and tried breathing through it. That was a little better. Hjörtur smiled at her.
“You get used to it, I promise,” he said. “Hopefully you won’t have to, though—it takes several days.”
Thóra rolled her eyes. “Damn it, it’s not like he’s going to move in down there,” she muttered through her jumper. Then she pulled it down to smile at Hjörtur. It was thanks to him that things had gone so well until now, in that they’d been able to get by without demanding the injunction. In any case, that would only have been a temporary measure since Markús and his family no longer had any claim on the house. The Westmann Islands owned it along with all its contents, and there was little point in fighting this fact even though Markús had made a concerted attempt to do so. He had focused particularly on Hjörtur Fridriksson, the man now standing next to Thóra; Hjörtur was the director of a project entitled Pompeii of the North, whose task it was to excavate a number of houses that had been buried by ash in the eruption on Heimaey Island in 1973. Thóra had had considerable contact with him by telephone and email since the case had begun, and liked the man well enough. He was inclined to be long-winded, but seemed reasonable and was not easily provoked. Hjörtur had been seriously tested, since Markús so often acted like a total ass. He had refused to give even the slightest clue as to why he was opposed to his parents’ house being excavated, had gone on and on about invasions of privacy, and had generally complicated the matter for Thóra in every conceivable way. After trying to reach an agreement but getting nowhere due to Markús’s pigheadedness, in defeat she had asked Hjörtur whether he couldn’t just dig up some other house instead. There were certainly enough to choose from. But that was out of the question, since Markús’s childhood home was one of the few houses in the area built of concrete, and thus was more likely than the others to have withstood the cataclysm in any significant way. The purpose of the excavation was not to dig down to a house that was now simply rubble.
Thóra had already started reading up on how she might best obtain an injunction against the excavation when it transpired that Markús was only concerned about the basement of the house. Finally they could discuss solutions sensibly, and Hjörtur had proposed this arrangement: the house would first be dug up and aired out, and then Markús would be the first person allowed down into the basement, where he could remove anything that he wanted. After some consideration he agreed to this compromise and Thóra breathed easier. Markús had no trouble at all bearing the cost of endless litigation, since he was anything but badly off financially. His family owned one of the largest fishing companies in the Westmann Islands, and even though Thóra would never complain about being paid well for her work, she was upset about working against her better judgment, and toward a goal that would never be reached. She was immensely relieved when Markús agreed to Hjörtur’s proposal; now she could start putting the final touches to the fine details of the agreement over how Markús’s visit to the basement would be conducted, how they could guarantee that others would not be allowed to sneak in before him, and so on. The agreement was then signed, and they only had to wait for the end of the excavation.
So there they stood, archaeologist and lawyer, staring at a crooked basement door while a man who had still been a teenager in 1973 wrestled with a terrible secret beneath their feet.
“Hallelujah,” said Thóra when they heard footsteps on the basement stairs.
“I do hope he found whatever he was looking for,” said Hjörtur gloomily. “We didn’t think about the possibility of him coming up empty-handed.”
Thóra crossed her fingers and stared at the door.
They watched anxiously as the doorknob turned, then incredulously as the door was cracked open only a tiny bit. They exchanged a glance, then Thóra leaned forward and spoke into the gap. “Markús,” she said calmly, “is something wrong?”
“You’ve got to come down here,” came the reply. His voice sounded peculiar, but it was impossible to tell whether he was excited, disappointed or sad. The glow from his flashlight shone through the chink and illuminated Thóra’s feet.
“Me?” Thóra asked, flabbergasted. “Down there?” She looked back at Hjörtur, who raised his eyebrows.
“Yes,” said Markús, in the same enigmatic tone. “I need to get your opinion on something.”
“My opinion?” she echoed. When she found herself speechless she had a habit of repeating whatever was said to her, giving herself time to ponder her response.
“Yes, your legal opinion,” said the voice behind the door.
Thóra straightened up. “I’ll give you all the opinions you want, Markús,” she said. “However, this is how it is with us lawyers: we have no need to experience for ourselves whatever it is we’re dealing with. So there’s no reason for me to clamber down there with you. Tell me what this is about and I’ll put together an opinion for you back at my office in Reykjavík.”
“You’ve got to come down here,” said Markús. “I don’t need a written opinion. A verbal one’ll do.” He paused. “I’m begging you. Just come down here.” Thóra had never heard Markús sound so humble. She’d only heard him being haughty and opinionated.
Hjörtur scowled at Thóra, unamused. “Why don’t you just get it over with? It’s completely safe, and I’m keen to finish up here.”
She hesitated. What in the blazes could be down there? She absolutely did not want to go down into even darker and fouler air. On the other hand, she agreed with Hjörtur that they had to settle this here and now. She roused herself. “All right then,” she conceded, grabbing Hjörtur’s flashlight. “I’m coming.” She opened the door wide enough to step through and saw Markús on the stairs, looking pale as a corpse. His face nearly matched the white helmet that he wore on his head. Thóra tried not to read too much into it, since the only light was coming from their flashlights, giving everything an otherworldly ...

Great protagonist
By Luanne Ollivier
3.5/5

I've been reading a number of Nordic mystery/thriller authors lately, but Yrsa Sigurdardottir was the first Icelandic author I've read. Indeed, she is known as 'Iceland's Crime Queen.'

Yrsa's recurring character is lawyer Thora Gudmundsdottir. In Ashes to Dust, the third book in the series, Thora is employed by a former resident of Heimaey Island in The Westman Islands. This fishing village was covered by a volcanic eruption in 1973 and only now (2007) is her client's former childhood home being uncovered. The government owns the houses and contents, but Markus insists on going to the basement ahead of the archaeologists to recover a box, before he signs off on the waiver. (I found the setting fascinating and ended up reading all about the Westman Islands online)

He swears he has no idea what's in the box - a friend left it in the basement and she is the one who desperately wants it back he says. But when the archaeologists go down after him, what they discover changes the game - three bodies nicely laid out. And the box? It contains a head. Yes, a head. Thora's case has taken a completely different turn.

Thora is a wonderfully different protagonist. She is a grandmother with a young child still at home, divorced, hoping that her long distance romance will work out. She's very, very determined and undertakes to prove her client's innocence. I found this different from North American practices - the lawyer pursuing clues and the truth rather than an investigator. I loved that she took along her secretary - again another character that's a square peg in a round hole. Interspersed with Thora's investigations are chapters from other characters that we know must somehow be related to the case.

Sigurdardottir has created a winding plot that takes us down many avenues, exploring familial relationships as well as those of a small close knit village. There are no great surprises (many of the clues are plainly laid out) and some of the story seems superfluous. At times, I wanted to hurry the tellin along - it seemed it could have been done in about eighty pages less.

I did enjoy the descriptions of Iceland's culture, lifestyle and scenery. But, Ashes to Dust felt a little wooden in parts. I'm not sure if this is in the original text or a result of the translation. It was an entertaining tale, but comparisons to Steig Larsson may be a bit too ambitious.

great Icelandic legal thriller
By A Customer
In 1973, a volcano erupts on Iceland's Heimaey Island. A village is buried under the lava. Included under the sea of ash is the family home of teenager Markus Magnusson.

In 2007, investors send a cleanup crew to excavate the site so it can become a tourist attraction. However, in the basement of the Magnusson home is found three relatively fresh corpses and a severed head. The Westmann Islands near retired Inspector Lieffson suspect Markus, who retained attorney Thora Gudmundsdottir to prevent the digging. The villagers offer little to repute the police assertion and the one person he claims who could vindicate him is dead. Digging for a viable alternative to her client, Thora defends Markus though she is convinced she represents a killer.

The third Thora Gudmundsdottir Icelandic legal thriller (see Last Rituals and My Soul To Take) is a great tale that uses the island nation's geography and history to anchor a fabulous present day murder mystery. The storyline is fast-paced with a deft investigation that leads to betrayal and secrets in a great setting. This series is a refreshing winner.

And it started so well
By Alex
This book has a very similar premise to what I consider to be Peter Robinson's best Inspector Banks novel, In A Dry Season, in that they both involve murder victims being discovered when a village that has been 'buried' for decades becomes exposed.

This is the third in the series featuring lawyer/sleuth Thora Gudmundsdottir. Although I did enjoy the first two, with some reservations, I get the impression the author is still trying to decide what she wants the series to be. The first, Last Rituals, was rather gruesome in places and found Thora working in partnership with a male German visitor to Iceland who of course becomes her love interest. In the second, My Soul to Take, the nasty element had been toned down, the male character, Matthew, was very much relegated to a supporting role, and Thora's young daughter, teenage son and his very pregnant girlfriend provided a sub-plot which was so bad it would be absurd in an American sitcom. Thankfully in this latest book that 'comic' element has almost gone, but so has Matthew who is little more than a telephone tag bit part player who might or might not be moving to Iceland. His role of sidekick is taken by Thora's secretary, who until now has been completely useless, and only kept her job as it was a condition of the terms of the lease of the office Thora rented. This fact is made plain in the earlier books but not mentioned in this one, just in case you are wondering why she would be tolerated. It looks as if Yrsa Sigurdardottir may be looking to reader reaction to determine the outcome of the, 'will they/won't they', romance element of Thora and Matthew, and who should get the nod as the sidekick.

Ashes to Dust has a great opening, and probably just pips the aforementioned, In A Dry Season, by the fact that it is based around real events in Iceland in 1973, when a volcanic eruption destroyed and buried most of an island village and caused it to be evacuated. However while the Robinson book builds up from the victim discovery, this one goes downhill faster than the lava flow central to the plot. It gets convoluted enough for the author to throw in a résumé, in the form of a review of case notes, about three quarters of the way through to remind you who everyone is and what is going on. (Just like Sam asking questions at the end of an episode of Quincy). I know it is fiction but the solution when it comes is so ludicrous it makes Murder On The Orient Express seem plausible.

If there is a fourth in the series I will read it in the hope that the author will have stopped experimenting and concentrate instead on the key elements that made her first book the best by far. For anyone considering Ashes To Dust who hasn't yet read the Peter Robinson book, I would recommend the latter as the better option.

“[Rivenbark]'s as rebellious, irreverent, and comical as ever.” ―Publishers Weekly

“...a rip-roaring read.... What makes Rivenbark's writing so entertaining is that it's a lot like seeing a stand-up comedy act: she does an uncanny job of keeping the flow of comedy fresh.” ―Book Reporter

Taking the Class Out of Yoga

Happy, happy, joy, joy! There is staggeringly good news on the health-and-fitness front at last.
Are you sitting down? I mean, if you’re like me, you’re almost always sitting down, which isn’t such a bad thing, as you’re about to learn.
Turns out, a twelve-year-long study in Denmark has concluded that women who have skinny thighs have twice the risk for heart disease as us normal women.
Can I get a “Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah,” my fluffy sisteren?
In your face, you supermodels with your spaghetti stems. Somebody please pass the pork fat and let me get on with the very serious business of avoiding a heart attack. I am all about being heart-healthy.
The study followed twenty-eight hundred Denmarkese (yeah, I know, but the real name makes me hawngry) and discovered that the portion of the population with thighs smaller than 23.6 inches in circumference had twice the risk of heart disease.
OK, to be honest, I thought that 23.6 inches sounded like a lot of inches when I first read that. I mean, that’s like almost two feet of inches if my math memory is correct. So I got out the old tape measure and y’all guess what?
My thighs, which are actually kind of thighnormous, are exactly 23.5 inches. Too much information? Suckit, I’m fit by Denmarkanian standards!
The study doesn’t explain why thicker thighs make a healthier heart but who the hell cares and, yes, I want fries with that Communion wafer.
There’s some speculation that it’s because thinner people (hereinafter referred to as “the damned”) have less muscle mass to “initiate the metabolic breakdown of lipids and glucose.” I mean that’s the first thing I thought when I read about it. Sorta. If you remove the part about metabolic breakdown of lipids and glucose.
This news came with caveats, of course. Caveat is a Latin word which means “dead person” or “funny neckerchief,” I forget which. Anyway, the big caveat is that people who have thighs quite a bit bigger than the delightful and healthful 23.6 inches in circumference (in other words, anyone who has ever eaten a turkey leg at Disney World and wondered why they have to be so damn small) aren’t healthier by nature. They have gone and gotten themselves a bad case of an “overhealthy heart” I guess.
Scientifically speaking, the study finds that a woman who is barely over five feet tall and weighs 135 pounds is half as likely to have heart disease as, say, Heidi Klum.
Now before all you supermodels get your Versaces in a wad and accuse me of wanting you to have heart problems, let me hasten to say that nothing could be further from the truth.
Scurvy maybe, pellagra possibly, but not heart trouble. It also should be noted that Denmark is frequently the winner in the annual poll of the “World’s Happiest Countries.” Small wonder. I’d be happy, too, if I lived in a country where big thighs were considered healthy and desirable.
This breaking news from Denmark came out just about the same time as a Time magazine cover story on “The Myth of Exercise” in which a very learned scholar wrote that, while it’s good for you, exercise won’t make you lose weight. In fact—and this part cracks me up—exercise can actually lead to weight gain because of the notion that you’re entitled to wolf down a platter of nachos the size of a hubcap at On the Border after a half hour workout on the Spawn of Satan, I mean, elliptical machine.
Your chickens have come home to roost, you diet-obsessed hand-wringers. And I want mine fried with a side of tater salad, extra mayo for my heart, natch.
Ever since I read about the study of the proud Denmarki people, and the Time exercise story, I’ve been thinking about cutting out my weekly yoga at the art museum, but I like it too much. Except for the parts where the middle-school classes taking tours past the Mary Cassatts and so forth point and laugh at us when our asses are in the air for Downward-Facing Hag or whatever you should call a roomful of mostly middle-aged but undeniably enlightened womenfolk in loose clothes.
What if all this yoga makes my thighs get smaller? Still, I’d hate to give it up because yoga really does give me a certain peace and clarity of spirit.
OK, I made that up. It just feels good to be somewhere for a whole hour without anybody being able to find me and ask me to do some shit for them.
I’m fairly certain that’s why it was invented many decades ago by Yogi Berra, a famous baseball player who was excellent at avoiding real work.
I never saw myself as a yoga-type person but then I read Eat, Pray, Love, whose author, the glowy, flowy Elizabeth Gilbert, described how her deep and intense voyage of self-discovery, which included dumping her perfectly nice husband and visiting several different continents, led her to realize that she could eat nine pizzas at one sitting in Italy and still feel good about it if she was headed to India to do some yoga.
I think there was a little more to the book than that, but that was my favorite part.
Yoga just sounds so cool. Our teacher, a young woman fairly bursting with good health, meets us where we are, so to speak.
“You can rest when you need to,” she said on the first day of class, seeming to look at me for a long time—perhaps because I was the only one who had never had so much as a smidgen of yoga before. She knew this because I announced it, repeatedly, so she’d set the bar pretty low.
I was delighted that she understood, and so I did rest. For an hour. Just lay there on the purple yoga mat my friend Christy Kramer got on a yard sale for fitty cent and loaned me when I told her I didn’t want to invest a whole lot of money into this yoga stuff until I was sure I’d like it.
Sure, some of the other women looked puzzled when I lay down and stayed down, but what can I tell you? It was the first time in for-freakin’-ever that I’d had some me-time, phone off, panties granny, and it felt wonderful.
Laying there while the others practiced some serious deep breathing and challenging poses like Old Pussy in the Sky or some such, I understood why everybody loves yoga. I went to sleep.
And was awakened an hour later by the instructor gently kneading my thigh. My perfect, enormous thigh.
“Uhhh, trying to sleep here,” I mumbled, but she just smiled one of those real peaceful yoga-induced smiles. “We want to keep the muscles as relaxed as possible.”
Was she high? If I was any more relaxed, I’d be in an urn on somebody’s mantle. I was deliciously relaxed and now understood why people who take naps in the middle of the day always feel so refreshed. At this rate, I’d be one of those irritating people who has a license plate holder that reads: MY OTHER CAR IS A YOGA MAT! OK, maybe not.
After that, she announced that we would take some deep breaths and thank our sun gods or something like that. It involved putting your hands in front of you and making a praying gesture for about two seconds, which, let me tell you, my muscles paid for the next day! I practically couldn’t get outta bed!
Yoga is going to be a much better fit for me than, say, Pilates, which, because I was raised Southern Baptist, I mispronounced for a really long time until my unchurched, heathen friend told me it had nothing to do with Pontius Pilate.
“It’s pronounced puh-lot-eez,” she said with clear irritation. She is one of those snooty types who talks a lot about how all the hypocrites are in church and she believes that God is everywhere around her.
Not meaning to be cruel, I hope for His sake this wasn’t true the day she seriously cut one in yoga class.
That’s the dirty little secret about yoga. All the pooting that goes on. Sure, you can try to sneak it out in low gear, so to speak, but everybody still knows. So while you’re in your Loving Warrior Stance when you should be breathing deeply and feeling the life force gum up your chakras or whatever, you’re just worried to death that the whole class is going to hear you fart out loud.
I’m not sure how Elizabeth Gilbert dealt with that because there’s no way you could eat nine pizzas for lunch and then go to yoga, even if it was a few days later. You’d still be floating up in the air like that idiot balloon boy.
I think I’ll keep doing yoga for a while, staying away from the new “yogilates” class I’ve heard about which combines yoga and Pilates with a foamy cappuccino concoction from the sound of it. After all, even though I’m not making real progress in the meditative closing moments when I’m supposed to be open to the universe and, instead, routinely make my grocery list in my head and worry about how unfair it is for me to need gum grafts at the same exact time that my kid needs orthodontia and where the hell is all that money going to come from.…
The instructor says that all of this openness to the will of the universe takes time. One doesn’t just leap into meditation. It can takes years of practice, even Elizabeth Gilbert said that. But, in the meantime, while I’m waiting for that to kick in, I’ll continue to eat pizza.
Just for the sake of my heart, you know.

More Southern Sass from Celia
By Sharon E. Cathcart
This is the fourth of Celia Rivenbark's books that I have read; suffice it to say that I'm a fan.

Rivenbark takes no prisoners with her witty essays on topics ranging from Twitter to elementary school science fairs and the cultures associated with them. She pokes fun at Southern culture, sexual addiction and politics as well. Some of the essays are laugh-out-loud funny, some of them are snarky and some of them are thought-provoking. Many of them are all three. She even takes on her family, with adventures featuring Duh-Hubby and Princess-Daughter. (And yes, she shares family secret recipes. Really.)

If you like columnists in the vein of Dave Barry, Rivenbark's work is for you.

Just so-so
By Amazon Customer
This is the first book I've read by Celia Rivenbark and while I really wanted to like it the humor just fell a bit short for me. Not having a husband or children and not being from the South may have been part of the reason why, but overall I just didn't have any of the moments of laughing out loud that other readers did. After reading the multitude of great reviews I thought that I would be unable to put this book down but that wasn't the case. It just came off as one long rant about fiber, Snuggies, Twitter etc. After awhile I just got sick of it, I can only assume this is written for a more settled, older audience, because I just didn't find it funny at all. I'll maybe try one of her earlier books but if you're a twenty something you might want to look at something else like Laurie Notaro's Idiot Girls Action Adventure Club.

Hmmmm....
By janjanmom
Okay, first I have to tell you that I love snark and sarcasm. Also, while I don't use bad words very often, I do think there are times when they punctuate a story like no other word can. So with those two things said, I cannot like this book. I can tell what the author is going for, I just think it is a fail. The poor word choices combined with bad snarky supposed-to-be-funny-but-instead-falls-flat humor makes for a book I have had to suffer through slowly one chapter at a time. I did not want to read more than a chapter even once. I suppose there is an audience for this book...perhaps if one uses foul language all the time, this book would just be unfunny and hard to read...which might appeal to someone, maybe?? However, the title did make me laugh out loud...so I guess the author is capable of being a bit funny every once in a while, yes?

Artful Reading
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
This collection provides diversity of background, diversity of age, diversity of issue, and, despite a recurrent whiny complaint on this page, diversity of political opinion. Some of its essays are personal and introspective, while others are public and informative. Some ruminate on an idea, while others endorse a position. Some test ideas, while other argue positions. Most are in English, though there's one Plato translation and some on bilingual issues.

Like many writing teachers, I believe students learn to write in part by reading constructively. This collection compiles writers like Frederick Douglass, Maxine Hong Kingston, Bill Buckley, and Martin Luther King, Jr., to make that more possible. Teachers can arrange readings around themes, topics, time periods, writing styles, or other approaches. And since essays range from only two pages to nearly twenty, students can learn to write for various lengths.

Moreover, the essays are simply readable, even without an assignment at hand. I sometimes grab my copy and flip to random essays when I have minutes to fill, because they give me something to think about, and it's more productive than browsing YouTube. Whether you're a teacher, student, or general reader, this short, sweet collection will give you plenty of ways to enjoy the fine art of contemporary creative nonfiction.

awesome book!
By erb
I'm a new Adjunct and I picked this book for my first English 101 class. The students like it, I like it, and the introduction and glossary in the back are extremely great teaching tools. The readings are also just difficult enough that students would need a dictionary but not hard enough to totally stump most EFL students. I would definitely recommend this book to other profs.

Disapointing
By shedlighter
If you're looking for very tough puzzles, this is not for you. These are no more challenging than any of the other Sudokus in the Will Shortz series. They require no advanced techniques. Taking David Bodycombe's Universal Sudoku rated from 1-6 stars as a standard, I would rate the toughest in this book as 4 stars or fewer.

Excellent for the skilled player!
By Thomas Baldovin
I've purchased a number of Will Shortz' sudoku books over the years. I've enjoyed them all. But I've gotten fairly skilled at sudoku puzzles and now need to be challenged. This collection is truly challenging! To offer a sense of how difficult the "mind bending" category of puzzles is in this book -- in one recent puzzle, in a line where I had only one number given, I solved it only after recognizing that 5 numbers had to fall in 5 of the spaces in that line (exact positions unknown). This lead me to 3 numbers in the remaining spaces which gave me only one additional number answer in that line!!! I was still far from done with that puzzle.
Clearly, this book is not for the newspaper or magazine sudoku player. You have to be pretty good at these.
Other features I like about this book is that it's printed on good white paper that takes pen or pencil well and the puzzles are a good size (one to a page). I also like that the given numbers fill each square, making the puzzle easy to read -- although for those who like to make notes in the squares, this might be a bad feature.
I also like the compact size of these books, i.e., the ones with the cartoon images on the cover. Note: not all of Will Shortz books are in compact size.
The only minor criticism I have with this book is that in other editions of these books, Mr. Shortz included sudoku variations, such as random box sudoku and 12-digit sudoku. I enjoy the variations and would've liked to see them included.
But except for that minor personal complaint, I highly recommend this book to the skilled sudoku player!

Terrifying Sudoku

New classifications for Will Shortz Puzzles: Fierce and Mind-Melting. Fierce seems to be somewhere between Demanding and 'Beware-VEry Challenging'.
Difficult, but so far almost all have been doable after a bit of a struggle. Very Satisfying!

Being the new girl is tough―just ask sixteen-year-old Rio Jones. A New York transplant, Rio has no clue how she's going to fit in at her fancy new private school in Southern California. Plus, being late, overdressed, and named after a Duran Duran song doesn't make the first day any easier.

Then, Rio meets Kristi. Beautiful, rich, and a cheerleader, Kristi is the queen bee of Newport Beach, and she isn't friends with just anyone, so Rio is thrilled when she's invited to be part of the most exclusive, popular clique. At first, Rio is having a great time, but as she becomes more immersed in the jet set crowd, she discovers an unwritten rule that her new friends forgot to mention: don't cross Kristi... in Alyson Noël's Art Geeks and Prom Queens.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Rio Jones, 16, doesn't have a clue how she is going to fit into her new Southern California private school. Just as she is about to drown in despair, she is rescued by a couple of geeks in AP Art who take her in hand. Then Kristi, the alpha female at the Newport Beach school, takes an interest in her, and Rio thinks her life is perfect–until she surpasses Kristi and learns the true meaning of revenge and the importance of being true to oneself. This plot line is summarily predictable, but that doesn't make the ride any less enjoyable. Rio is well drawn with believable inner dialogue, and the stereotyped popular crowd is so much fun to hate. Some mild drug use, sexual situations, and realistic profanity are included.–Morgan Johnson-Doyle, Sierra High School, Colorado Springs, CO

From Booklist
Gr. 9-12. "If my house was a high school then my mom would be the prom queen, my dad would be the brainiac, and I would be the big weirdo art geek." Sixteen-year-old Rio has just moved from New York to ritzy Southern California. She makes a few friends in her art class, including dazzling Jas, but dumps them after cheerleader Kristi embraces her. Her father, away on business, and her mother, a former model delighted with Rio's new designer makeover, are oblivious when Rio's position in the sex-and-drugs popular scene goes wrong. Then Rio summons help, exacts some sweet revenge, and returns to the friends (and family) she trusts. Fans of Gossip Girls and other series about the rich and gorgeous will recognize all the familiar elements here: designer labels, gleaming houses, and a model-perfect, central character drawn straight from the fashion fantasies of Teen Vogue. However, Noel, the author of Faking 19 (2005), writes with a bit more humor and authenticity than some of her chick-lit cotemporaries. Expect high demand and possible sequels. Gillian Engberg

Realistic narrator, but hard to like her
By small review
New girl Rio expects to be a social outcast in her new school, so she is surprised when Kristi, the beautiful queen-bee mean girl, invites Rio into her clique. Rio quickly sheds the artsy friends she made her first day and embraces Kristi's offer. But being friends with Kristi comes with strings: Rio must make sure she's dressed to meet Kristi's approval, she is only allowed to date boys Kristi approves of, she must embrace Kristi's drug and alcohol habits, and above all else, Rio cannot outshine Kristi. Rio is happy enough to comply, but when Rio's popularity begins to eclipse Kristi's, Kristi sets out to destroy Rio's social standing.

Filled with mean girl cattiness and teenage insecurities, Art Geeks and Prom Queens is a realistic portrayal of how a teenager in Rio's position would probably think, act, and feel. As a result, I can see why it has been included in recommended reading lists for so many schools. Rio's voice is believable and never sounded forced or like an adult trying too hard to sound like a teenager. Instead, I can completely believe that Rio is a real girl candidly describing a year in her life. In this regard, Art Geeks and Prom Queens will probably be a hit among its target audience (of which, I should point out, I do not fall into).

While Rio might ring true, she isn't entirely likable. For most of the book she passively goes along with all of Kristi's demands, trading morality for popularity. As a teenager, Rio's actions are pretty realistic. I mean, let's face it, how many teenagers are moral crusaders in the face of popularity? Still, while it's completely believable that Rio would, for example, date a popular guy and let him kiss her (and more) when she doesn't even really like him all that much, it isn't very easy to like her when she behaves so falsely. The rest of the characters are generic stereotypes without much depth or likability. The plot is equally shallow and trite with no surprises.

Rio does stand up for herself in the end, but her turn around rings a little hollow. She acknowledges some of her behavior and the regrets she has about it, but other behaviors (like drug use) are never repented and there is no indication that Rio will stop. Teens may find Rio easy to relate to, but without adult guidance on discussions about the book, I wonder if the book might be sending the wrong messages about certain behaviors. There are plenty of other books and movies to choose from in the "mean girl" and "lifestyles of the rich and fabulous" genres, most of which I've found are more enjoyable reads.

"Heathers" for the new generation
By Bearette24
This was an enjoyable read. It tells the story of Rio, who's named after a Duran Duran song. She lives with her former model mother and lawyer father in Laguna Beach, but misses New York and her friends there (they recently moved).

Rio makes a couple of friends from her art class in Laguna Beach, but then Kristi, cheerleader and queen bee, takes her under her wing. Suddenly, Rio has to follow rules...who to associate with, which boys to like, how to dress...or otherwise make Kristi mad. Everyone tiptoes around Kristi. But then, a fateful game of spin-the-bottle seals Rio's destiny. Kristi's not talking to her anymore, and she's turned the whole school against her.

This was an insightful look at high school cliques, the fear of those in power, and also just a fun bubbly read that made me remember being a teenager. The writing was pitch-perfect and really sounded like a young adult.

Is the view from the top really that great?
By Kimberly Pauley
When her fashion-plate mom (a former model) and her high-powered dad (a successful lawyer) move her from New York to Southern California, Rio is sure it's going to be tough. She's leaving behind her good friends to be shoved pell-mell into a fancy private school where everyone seems perfect and together. Where everyone seems like the kind of people her mother would really love for Rio to be friends with.

Even though her mother is a beautiful society gal, Rio has never aspired to be more than an art geek. She's used to baggy clothes and hiding behind her camera. But with her mother's encouragement, she makes friends with Kristi, the beautiful, rich, cheerleader that runs the school.

Things seem perfect for a while - well, perfect, if you don't mind Kristi telling you who to hang out with and what to wear. But then Rio becomes too successful. She's getting dates when Kristi isn't. Things start to spin out of control for Rio between keeping up appearances, pressure from the boys (including a sizzling hot senior), and the various vices that Kristi has introduced her to: drugs, drinking, and hooking up.

Rio finds out that looking perfect and feeling perfect are two very different things. Will she be able to cross Kristi and live to tell the tale? Will she be true to herself or give in to the popular crowd? Will she tell her mother that all the pressure she's under is just too much?

While the plot might sound outwardly a bit like a Gossip Girls novel, there's more of a heart in this story. Readers will really root for Rio even when she's making some bad decisions and will pull for her when the going gets tough. Realistic scenes and sharp dialog make this book a real winner. Recommended for ages 14 and up.

Too many 4x4
By Nathan A. Bussiere
Half of this book is 4x4 kenken that are way too easy. If you only want 6x6 or larger I suggest getting another book. New York Times is great, though.

KenKen is My New Puzzle Addiction
By Shelly Itkin
KenKen is the brainchild of Tetsuya Miyamoto a Japanese math teacher who used these puzzles as a teaching tool in his classroom so his students would become well versed in the areas of mathematics', logical and critical thinking.

After I was introduced to Will Shortz Sudoku books I really found them challenging and exciting but was looking for a change of pace and that was when I discovered Ken Ken.

The book of puzzles contains two different sized grids, the first half of it starts with puzzles on a 5 x 5 grid pattern, the remaining 150 puzzles gradually get more difficult. The remaining 150 puzzles in the book are solved on grids that are 7 x 7.

Although I am pretty experienced with Sudoku and a newcomer to Kenken. Each sized grid offers puzzles that are classified as moderate, the next puzzles are labeled demanding and the hardest puzzles are considered very challenging.

The pages are printed back to back on paper with a similar consistency as a newspaper I had to be careful with the pen I used so it would not come thru to the other side of the page. I found the mechanical pencils didn't show up well so was comfortable with a regular pen which is the method I preferred.

Since I write larger then many people I enjoyed having puzzles that provided me with ample sized grid. I normally do most of my calculations in my head each page, however offered plenty of room for me to figure out the solutions to the KenKen grid.
Both sized puzzles did not offer much room in the margins but all of the puzzles offered lots of space on the page below if you need to jot down notes or do any arithmetic.

Sudoku lovers who are looking for a new challenge should enjoy this KenKen book. The result of the team of (Will) Shortz and (Tetsuya) Miyamoto has produced a winning combination.

The NY Times Will Shortz Presents KenKen: 300 Easy to Hard Puzzles That Make You Smarter
By Marilyn E. Gresh
I highly recommend this book for beginners, from seniors to youth, anyone who enjoys math and puzzles. I did the NY Times' KenKen for a year prior to playing it in print. I had several surgeries this year and the simple puzzles in this book allowed me to continue to play a game I love while struggling with the fog of recovery. This is definitely a book FOR BEGINNERS, the "hard" puzzles at the end of the book are only hard compared to the puzzles at the beginning of the book. Again, KenKen is for everyone. From youths who want a fun way to learn math to seniors who need to keep their mind sharp, KenKen is answer!
