When Zachary Beaver Came to Town, by Kimberly Willis Holt

The red words painted on the trailer caused quite a buzz around town and before an hour was up, half of Antler was standing in line with two dollars clutched in hand to see the fattest boy in the world.

Toby Wilson is having the toughest summer of his life. It's the summer his mother leaves for good; the summer his best friend's brother returns from Vietnam in a coffin. And the summer that Zachary Beaver, the fattest boy in the world, arrives in their sleepy Texas town. While it's a summer filled with heartache of every kind, it's also a summer of new friendships gained and old friendships renewed. And it's Zachary Beaver who turns the town of Antler upside down and leaves everyone, especially Toby, changed forever.

With understated elegance, Kimberly Willis Holt tells a compelling coming-of-age story about a thirteen-year-old boy struggling to find himself in an imperfect world. At turns passionate and humorous, this extraordinary novel deals sensitively and candidly with obesity, war, and the true power of friendship.

When Zachary Beaver Came to Town is the winner of the 1999 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. This title has Common Core connections.

Amazon.com Review
Summer in the tiny Texas town of Antler is traditionally a time for enjoying Wylie Womack's Bahama Mama snow cones and racking up the pins at Kelly's Bowl-a-Rama, but this year it's not going well for Toby Wilson. His 13-year-old heart has been broken twice: once by his mother, who left him and his father to become a country singer in Nashville, and then again by his crush Scarlett Stalling, the town beauty who barely acknowledges Toby's existence. But when Zachary Beaver, "The World's Fattest Boy," comes to Antler as part of a traveling sideshow, Toby begins to realize that there might just be people who have it worse than him. By reaching out to Zachary in small ways--such as helping him realize his lifelong dream of being baptized--Toby is better able to put his own problems into perspective. At the baptism, Toby finally feels at peace: "Zachary smiles and I wonder if he's feeling different. Because standing here waist deep in Gossimer's Lake... I'm feeling different--light and good and maybe even holy." By summer's end, Toby's friendship with Zachary has provided him with the emotional stamina to begin dealing with his mother's decision and to gracefully accept the fact that Scarlett will forever be just beyond his reach.

With Zachary Beaver, Kimberly Willis Holt, author of the award-winning My Louisiana Sky, further explores southern-flavored small town life. Toby's quirky, yet ultimately rewarding coming of age story will serve as a gentle reminder to teens that sometimes the best way to work through your problems is by helping others with theirs. (Ages 11 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly
Holt (My Louisiana Sky) sets her heartwarming and carefully crafted novel during 1971, but her message of tolerance is one that contemporary readers will appreciate. The moment Zachary Beaver, "the fattest boy in the world," rolls into Antler, Tex., in a trailer, 13-year-old Toby Wilson stands in line with his $2 in hand, waiting for a peek. Toby can't imagine what life is like inside the cramped trailer for the 643-pound boy. When Zachary's guardian suddenly takes off, leaving himAand the trailerAin the Dairy Maid parking lot, Toby and his best friend, Cal, become his caretakers of sorts, and eventually, his friend. Through this friendship, Toby learns sympathy and respectAnot just for the misfit boy but for his own recently estranged parents and a string of other quirky characters who struggle with personal tragedies. While a few of the plot points feel predictable, the well-developed characters, all fantastic and flawed in their own ways, add plenty of spice. There's Toby's mother who aspires to be the next Tammy Wynette; Scarlett, the pouty-lipped teen dream, who hopes to escape Antler by becoming a model; and Miss Myrtie Mae, the town librarian who sacrificed her one chance at love to care for her brother. Picturesque images such as Zachary's baptism in a man-made lake and the novel's culminating scene drive home the point that everyday life is studded with memorable moments. Ages 10-15. (Oct.)

From Library Journal
Grade 5-8-A humdrum Texas summer is transformed when Toby and Cal befriend a surly sideshow star, arguably "the fattest boy in the world." Holt deftly fleshes out her characters and expands their worldview beyond the borders of their small town. (Nov.)

An English teacher's dream, ninth grader's nightmare
By A Customer
Zachary Beaver is a novel of many charms, not the least of which is Ms. Holt's penchant and skill at characterization of quirky small-town America. Her adult characters, especially, ring true with the foibles and idiosyncracies that we all have. Holt does this as well as Carson McCullers did. However, Zachary Beaver is less successful the younger the characters get, especially on an emotional level, which should never happen with a novel for young adults. An example? Young Toby's mother sends word that she's not coming home from Nashville. Any 13 year old would be emotionally devastated. Toby is barely budged. Similarly, when his best friend's older brother dies in Vietnam. Should be devastating, does not play that way. Add to this the book's fairly predictable plot and leisurely pacing, and you have a book that many middle and high school kids are going to get assigned but not be aching to finish. Of those who say this is a better novel for adults, this reader agrees.

A true Texas treasure
By Mariya Rod
There is no room to doubt that this book more than deserved the 1999 National Book Award. Holt's quirky but lovable characters and beautiful imagery make this a book not quickly forgotten. This book is about friendship, loss, life, love and everything that connects them. For adults who revelled in Billie Letts' WHERE THE HEART IS, this book rings with the same poignancy and life-affirming spirit.

Simply the best story of the year!
By A Customer
I just finished reading this book minutes ago and I am so moved and touched that I had to write in. Holt's writing is simple and cinematic. Her characters will stay with me for a long time. I was hesitant at first to read a book just about a fat boy who is ridiculed and objectified, but this book is so much more. The sub plots of Cal and his brother brought me to tears. I want to start reading it all over again.

Dark secrets and unspoken suspicions come between Zoey and Stevie Rae, putting their friendship – and the House of Night – at risk.

After Zoey Redbird and her gang have banished Kalona and Neferet, the fallen High Priestess, from Tulsa, you'd think they'd catch a break. But with Zoey and her sexy Warrior Stark both recovering from a brush with death, and the fledglings struggling to deal with the fallout from Neferet's reign of terror, a break is just not in the forecast. Zoey is haunted by her confusing yet elemental connection with A-ya, the ancient Cherokee maiden who was the only human able to tempt Kalona's body and soul. How will A-ya's pull on her affect Zoey's ability to resist the dangerously seductive immortal?

Meanwhile, Stevie Rae, with her super red vamp powers, always thought she could handle the stuff she's been keeping from her BFF. But the mysterious, threatening force lurking in the tunnels under the Tulsa Depot is spreading; Stevie Rae won't confide where she's been and what she's doing, and Zoey is beginning to wonder just how much she can trust the person she always thought would have her back.

Will their choices destroy them and will darkness consume the House of Night?

TEMPTED (CHAPTER ONE)

Zoey

The night sky over Tulsa was alight with a magical crescent moon. Its brilliance made the ice that coated the city, and the Benedictine Abbey where we'd just had our showdown with a fallen immortal and a rogue High Priestess, shimmer so that everything around me seemed touched by our Goddess. I looked at the moonlight-bathed circle that stood in front of Mary's Grotto, the place of power where not long ago Spirit, Blood, Earth, Humanity, and Night had been personified and then had joined to triumph over hatred and darkness. The carved image of Mary, surrounded by stone roses and nestled within a ledge high in the grotto, appeared to be a beacon for the silver light. I stared at the statue. Mary's expression was serene; her ice-covered cheeks glistened as if she wept in quiet joy.

My gaze lifted to the sky. Thank you. I sent a silent prayer up to the beautiful crescent that symbolized my Goddess, Nyx. We're alive. Kalona and Neferet are gone.

"Thank you," I whispered to the moon.

Listen within . . .

The words swept through me, subtle and sweet like leaves touched by a summer breeze, brushing my consciousness so lightly that my waking mind barely registered them, yet Nyx's whispered command imprinted itself into my soul.

I was vaguely aware that there were a lot of people (well, nuns, fledglings, and a few vampyres) around me. I could hear the mixture of shouting, talking, crying, and even laughing that filled the night, but it all felt distant. At that moment the only things that were real to me were the moon above and the scar that sliced from one shoulder all the way across my chest to the other shoulder. It tingled in response to my silent prayer, but it wasn't a tingle of pain. Not really. It was a familiar warm, prickling sensation that assured me Nyx had, once again, Marked me as hers. I knew if I peeked under the neck of my shirt I would find a new tattoo decorating that long, angry-looking scar with an exotic filigree of sapphire--a sign that proved I was following my Goddess's path.

"Erik and Heath, find Stevie Rae, Johnny B, and Dallas--then check the perimeter of the abbey to be certain all the Raven Mockers fled with Kalona and Neferet!" Darius shouted the command, snapping me out of my warm, fuzzy prayer mode, and once I'd been shocked out, it was like an iPod had been cranked too high as sound and confusion flooded my senses.

"But Heath's a human. A Raven Mocker could kill him in a second." The words burst from my mouth before I could clamp it shut, proving beyond all doubt that being moonstruck wasn't my only moronic skill.

Predictably, Heath puffed up like a cat-smacked toad.

"Zo, I'm not a damn pussy!"

Erik, looking very tall and full-grown, kick-your-butt vampyre-like, snorted sarcastically and then said, "No, you're a damn human. Wait, that does make you a pussy!"

"So, we defeat the big baddies and inside five minutes Erik and Heath are banging their chests at each other. How totally predictable," Aphrodite said with her patented sarcastic sneer as she joined Darius, but her expression completely changed when she turned her attention to the Son of Erebus Warrior. "Hey there, Hotness. You doing okay?"

"You need not worry about me," Darius said. His eyes met hers, and they practically telegraphed the chemistry between them, but instead of going to her like he usually would and doing some very gross kissing, he remained focused on Stark.

Aphrodite's gaze went from Darius to Stark. "Okay, eew. Your chest is totally crispy crittered."

James Stark was standing between Darius and Erik. Okay, well, standing wasn't exactly what he was doing. Stark was swaying and looking extremely unsteady.

Ignoring Aphrodite, Erik spoke up. "Darius, you should probably get Stark inside. I'll coordinate the reconnoitering with Stevie Rae and make sure everything runs smoothly out here." His words seemed okay, but his tone was all I'm-the-big-guy-in-charge, and when he followed up with a condescending "I'll even let Heath help out," he really sounded like a pompous butt.

"You'll let me help out?" Heath snapped. "Your mom will let me help out."

"Hey, which one of them is supposed to be your boyfriend?" Stark asked me. Even in the terrible shape he was in, he caught my glance with his. His voice was scratchy, and he sounded scarily weak, but his eyes sparkled with humor.

"I am!" Heath and Erik said together.

"Oh, for crap's sake, Zoey, they're both idiots!" Aphrodite said.

Stark started to chuckle, which turned to a cough, which changed again to a painful gasp. His eyes rolled back and, like a slinky, he collapsed.

Moving with the quickness that came naturally to a Son of Erebus Warrior, Darius caught Stark before he hit the ground. "I need to get him inside," Darius said.

I felt like my head was going to explode. Sagging in Darius's arms, Stark looked well on his way to being dead. "I-I don't even know where the infirmary is," I stuttered.

"Not a problem. I'll get a penguin to show us," Aphrodite said. "Hey, you, nun!" she yelled at one of the nearby black-and-white-clad sisters who had scurried out of the abbey after the night had gone from battle chaos to aftermath chaos.

Darius hurried after the nun, with Aphrodite following him. The warrior glanced over his shoulder at me. "Aren't you coming with us, Zoey?"

"As soon as I can." Before I could deal with Erik and Heath, from behind me a familiar twang saved the day.

"Go on with Darius and Aphrodite, Z. I'll take care of Dumb and Dumber and be sure there's no booger monsters left out here."

"Stevie Rae, you are the Best Friend of All Best Friends." I turned and hugged her quickly, loving how reassuringly solid and normal she felt. Actually, she seemed so normal that I got a weird twinge when she stepped back and grinned at me and I saw, as if for the first time, the scarlet tattoos that spread out from the filled-in crescent in the middle of her forehead and down either side of her face. A sliver of unease threaded through me.

Misunderstanding my hesitation, she said, "Don't worry about these two dorks. I'm gettin' used to jerking them apart." When I just stood there staring at her, the bright smile she'd been wearing dimmed. "Hey, you know your grandma's okay, right? Kramisha got her back inside right after Kalona was banished and Sister Mary Angela just told me she was goin' inside to check on her."

"Yeah, I remember Kramisha helping her into the wheelchair. I'm just . . ." My voice trailed off. I was just what? How could I put into words that I was haunted by a feeling that everything wasn't right with my best friend and the group of kids she'd allied herself with, and how do I say that to my best friend?

"You're just tired and worried 'bout a bunch of stuff," Stevie Rae said softly.

Was that understanding I saw flicker through her eyes? Or was it something else, something darker?

"I get it, Z, and I'll take care of things out here. You just be sure Stark's okay." She hugged me again, and then gave me a little push in the direction of the abbey.

"'Kay. Thanks," I said lamely, starting toward the abbey and totally ignoring the two dorks who were standing there staring at me.

Stevie Rae called after me, "Hey, remind Darius or someone to keep an eye on the time. It's only about an hour until sunrise, and you know me and all the red fledglings gotta be inside out of the sun by then."

"Yeah, no problem. I'll remember," I said.

The problem was it was getting harder and harder for me to forget Stevie Rae wasn't what she used to be.

So torn...
By Monet
First I want to address the POVs issue. While it was refreshing to see another POV in the book , I think the authors spread themselves a little too thin with it. I didn't need to read the angsty drama of the boys' perspectives, you already get enough of that from Zoey. I did, however, think that Stevie Ray's POV was essential to the plot as there was so much going on with her that only leaving the book to Zoey would have completely lost the plot of the *other* red fledglings and Rephaim. I don't think we needed to see Rephaim's view either since we were already getting it from Stevie Ray. There was just too much time spent on rehashing things from different POVs and it made the book seem sluggish. Seeing the drama at the end with Stevie Ray from 3 different people was just unnecessary, I'm almost shocked they didn't throw in Aphrodite's perspective on that too. The Casts should have just left the telling of the story to the two new High Priestesses and let us have a little bit more plot.

The plot was another issue with me. Really, not a lot happened in the book. And the few major things that did happen were kind of tossed to the side while everyone dealt with their relationship drama. I would have much rather had two very romantic scenes with Stark and Heath and get on with it then have to read 15 little pointless ones where nothing happened. The stuff that happened with the council, Neferet and Kalona at the end was totally brushed off so Zoey could go deal with her emotional issues. The councils mindset in response to the two of them should have been a really big deal and should have been addressed but instead it was "Boo hoo, Zoey hurt Stark's feelings. What's she going to do?" I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Casts are developing this amazing plot but they are dealing with it the wrong way.

I didn't like the characters as much in this book either. Maybe it's because I feel like since this is Book 6 that Zoey should start showing a little more maturity. If I have to read the words 'bullpoopie' or 'raging case of diarrhea' from her mind one more time, I swear I'm giving up on the series. The bond of the nerd herd wasn't so apparent. I missed the comic relief of the twins and their teasing of Damien and Aphrodite. All their scenes together were just a whole bunch of nothing but filler.

I thought the death was actually one of the book's more redeeming qualities for me. I thought it was well-placed and necessary for Zoey to develop as a character and as a hero. I'm surprised by who Zoey is left with as a romantic interest since he wasn't even in the first books but after reading his character in Tempted, I think it was the right choice. Of course, who's ever really dead in these books?

I gave this book three stars because I *wanted* to like it so badly but I just didn't. I think the storyline is amazing but the whole time I was reading it, I was just annoyed. Annoyed with the pace, annoyed with the characters and to be honest, annoyed with the immaturity of the writing which never bothered me before this book. It may sound kind of weird but it's like I want to know what happens, I just don't want to have to read about it anymore.

One long dream...start to finish
By H. Sapiens
#1 Avoid reviews that contain the ending spoilers or this book is not even going to be worth reading.

First off, this series is incredibly imaginative, so I don't want to come off sounding like the book is, well... "poopie". It's not - it's just nowhere near on par with the other books in the series. On it's own I would say it's more like a high 2 or low 3, but with so much invested in the characters, Tempted may not pull its own weight but is entertaining nonetheless.

Tempted leaves off where we left off with Neferet ushering fallen angel, Kalona, (now calling himself Nyx's consort, Erebus) into the spotlight with a grand entrance at the House of Night. Zoey and friends have escaped to the relative safety of the convent belonging to the City Cats nuns only to have to fight the Raven Mockers. Tempted begins with the clean-up and most of the book is devoted to the reorganization of Clan Zoey and planning of Kalona's downfall (they don't get that far). Much time is focused on Stevie Rae and the secrets she keeps - especially one involving Kalona's firstborn - the Raven Mocker Rephaim.

This goes on and on until 20 pages to the end when the action starts up again building up to a showdown between Kalona and Zoey. The ending comes in a rush of confusion (not at all what I was expecting) leading to a promise of answers in the next installment. So, on its own Tempted read like one big build-up to the next book with far too much time spent to building up relationships between other characters (Stevie Rae with her "Red Vampyres" and Rephaim, Aphrodite and Darius, sheesh - even Stark and Heath).

POV: One of the reasons this book felt like one big build-up and a bit disjointed was the removal of focus from Zoey. Unlike the prior books, the POV shifts between characters. Each chapter is told from the perspective of one of the characters, so indicated under the Chapter heading. I see why the authors are doing this, but I don't think it was pulled off quite as elegantly as it could have. See Shiver for an example of a book where joint POV is used to further the story telling a near singular story line. In Tempted, too many story lines are followed to give the book a cohesive feel. Whereas other books have flowed naturally, this one really felt a little more forced from the authors rather than a force of its own.

Language: It's beginning to grate on me. In any other situation, when teens (or anyone) begin hanging out together for extended periods of time, they start sounding like each other. Not here! No, we have every dialect (even made up!) from the U.S. - poor grammar included. It felt stronger (and it could have been because of the multiple POV) in Tempted than in other installments. However, the regional colloquialisms are starting to sound forced and a bit much. I would love to know from Middle America teens if they REALLY sound like this ALL the time, because I doubt it. Also, it feels like all of these really intense life experiences should be shaping and maturing the teens, and yet when Zoey faces an immortal out pops "poopie" - most people I know relax around their friends but have a different language/presentation that they may use around others. My feeling is that the authors are trying to present the characters as incredibly strong individuals that do not yield to peer pressure, but it doesn't feel true. Plus, I am tired of all the bowel movement talk.

Characters: Little character development has occurred. However, this is in part because the events in Hunted and Tempted are both about a week apart (for the whole books). However, I am having a really hard time imagining a full-fledged vampyre like Darius falling for Aphrodite with all her juvenile melodrama. Stark has probably demonstrated the most character development and maturity. Sylvia Redbird appears briefly but is still a strong influence on Zoey and her choices (she's my favorite character). Heath has turned into a shell of a stereotypical football jock fused with a lap dog. The "Reds" versus "Blues" thing going on between the vampyres is getting a bit labored.

Story Line Turns: At the end of Tempted, Zoey's circle flies to Italy to meet with the Vampyre High Council and this is where the book leaves us. Neferet and Kalona are also there and the issue of free will/free choice becomes critical. So, it seems that at least the next installment of the House of Night will not be happening at the House of Night. This may not be a bad thing. The ending was just too rushed and TOO confusing/shocking. Rather than end as a really good cliffhanger, this makes the whole book feel like one big set-up for the next novel. Since nothing really happened until the last 50 pages, I have to wonder if I would not have missed anything if I skipped this one.

Bottom line: Only read it if you are addicted to the series. Wait to read it until right before the next book is released if you can. You will either love or hate the ending (I don't think there is a middle ground), which is ridiculously abrupt. In fact, it's not even an ending. Here is where Team Cast could take a hint from the Twilight series - use a natural ending to your advantage. If the characters seemed immature and unrealistic before, expect their language to grate on you in Tempted.

They atTEMPTED to destroy this series.
By Mrs. B
Wow... I just finished it, and my first thought was that the Cast's must be experiencing Writer's Block and threw this out there to satisfy their publishing requirements.

This completely lacked all of the power of the first books in the series, it was extremely hard to follow as there was no unifying theme through this book as there were in all the others.

They're supposedly fighting the Evil of All Evil, but the book was nothing but a mash up of different characters running around with absolutely no purpose.

Come on, like they'd really let Heath run around a convention of Vampyres? PLEASE!

The Tulsa HON has all but been obliterated, and the Council acts like they know nothing about it?

I think the Cast's better get back to what made this series so great to begin with and stop trying to just drag it out, which is what this felt like.... it definitely was NOT their best work, not even close.

If the next installment doesn't get back to what made them so interesting, I'll be TEMPTED to never read another HON book again.

The ultimate companion guide to the blockbuster Hunger Games trilogy

For all those who adore Katniss and Peeta, and can't get enough, this companion guide to the wildly popular Hunger Games series is a must-read and a terrific gift.

Go deeper into the post-apocalyptic world created by Suzanne Collins than you ever thought possible―an alternative future where boys and girls are chosen from twelve districts to compete in "The Hunger Games," a televised fight-to-the-death. When sixteen-year-old Katniss learns that her little sister has been chosen, Kat steps up to fight in her place―and the games begin. This unauthorized guide takes the reader behind the stage.

The Hunger Games Companion includes fascinating background facts about the action in all three books, a revealing biography of the author, and amazing insights into the series' main themes and features--from the nature of evil, to weaponry and rebellions, to surviving the end of the world. It's everything fans have been hungering for since the very first book!

This book is not authorized by Suzanne Collins, Scholastic Press or anyone involved in the Hunger Games movie.

"...belongs in any collector's or fanatic's library."     --TEEN INK, EDITOR'S CHOICE AWARD: The Hunger Games Companion, an interview with Lois Gresh

"What is just as exciting (well, almost) as the Hunger Games? THE HUNGER GAMES COMPANION, of course! The reader will be taken through details that makes The Hunger Games the exciting, fast-paced, nerve-wracking series fans around the world obsess over."
     --Krystal Larson, Fresh Fiction

“Interesting and useful material ... Worthwhile exegesis.” ―Kirkus Reviews

From the Author
THE HUNGER GAMES COMPANION includes facts and insights into the main ideas and themes of the novels -- from the nature of evil to weaponry and rebellions to surviving the end of the world.  I dig deep beneath the surface and offer opinions as to how the world has ended up in this hideous post-apocalyptic state; why Katniss agrees to be the Mockingjay, why she chooses Peeta, why she becomes intensely depressed, why she becomes addicted to morphling; why the Capitol is so evil, why the government lets their own people starve, why they send children into these deadly arenas, why they justify binge-eating and plastic surgery and fine clothing while letting everyone else die from grotesque torture.  The book covers everything from the various type of muttations, including how they might be created in real life, to the poisons and medicines, the Avoxes, the hovercrafts, the Career Tributes; Thresh, Finnick, Plutarch Heavensbee, Haymitch, President Snow, Cato, Beetee, Johanna, Katniss' mother, Buttercup, Effie Trinket, Caesar Flickerman; and very interesting to me, the complex nature of the arenas themselves.

Don't be fooled by Lois Gresh-only reviewers
By Crystal Watanabe
UPDATE: I have to say, I am not as jaded about Amazon's reviews after seeing that they removed all 8 reviews before mine that looked suspiciously like they were written all by the same person, giving the book 5 stars and boosting its rating.

I write this review not because I have some kind of thing against the author, but because I honestly believe that people should be warned about this book. I was given an ARC to review and was shocked at the book's content. Find my full review by Googling the title and "mockingjay".

While the other glorious reviews praise how much this book is about The Hunger Games, let's get real here. The book is BARELY about The Hunger Games. The chapter on Tributes is about Spartacus. The chapter on weapons is a disgusting how-to on how to kill a person. The chapter on torture gives you disgusting accounts of botched executions by electric chair, describing frying skin, eyeballs popping out of sockets, and other disgusting details that don't directly relate to the book.

It reads like a textbook on the details behind the world of Panem but does NOT mention anything about district specialties, whether you really can eat pine and what it does for you nutritionally, compiled facts about characters, or a theoretical map of Panem. These are things I would expect and want in a Hunger Games Companion, but they are nowhere to be found in this book.

If you want to hand your 14 year old a book telling you how to make exploding arrowheads, how to properly hold an axe, and how to kill someone with a spear, by all means, this is the book you're looking for. Otherwise, wait for the official one. I know I almost vomited reading this book.

And on that note, examine the suspicious activity on the reviews on Lois Gresh's books. If you look at the 5 star reviews on her Twilight Companion, which got completely ROASTED by that fandom, they're mostly from anonymously protected kids under 13 with perfect grammar or people who ONLY review Lois Gresh books. All the reviewers preceding mine have only reviewed Lois Gresh books.

Not worth reading
By SCurry
There are Hunger Games SPOILERS included in this.

Being an avid fan of The Hunger Games series, I perused this book at the local bookstore. Thankfully I did that prior to purchasing it because all in all, I feel that buying the book would be a waste of one's money.
While the author brings up some interesting points, her ideas are really just that: her own ideas and opinions. Calling this a "companion" to Collins' series is completely false. At times I wondered if Gresh had even truly read the books because she had many glaring inconsistencies with the books' plots.
As another reviewer mentioned, the Quarter Quells were not always the same; only the one in Catching Fire picked tributes from among the existing victors. Also, Gresh seemed to have skimmed the information available in the books regarding District 13. She repeatedly claimed that it only existed underground and that nobody was able to come above ground. However, in the books, Buttercup comes and goes through a window *above the ground* in Katniss's family's room, Katniss and Gale are allowed to hunt outside and give the meat to the cooking staff, and some of the propos were filmed under a tree outside. Somehow Gresh missed these details.
She also mentioned a theory that 13 was allied with the Capital and that's why they didn't help the other districts. In the book, Collins wrote that many of the survivors of the rebellion had no knowledge of their military utilities and that their main goal was rebuilding so that they could eventually help and actually be successful.
I did not finish the book because I still wasn't enjoying it after an hour spent reading it. However, even though I occasionally skimmed the more unsavory chapters (such as the one telling the potentially young readers how to throw different weapons), I still found enough plot errors to really question Gresh's reading comprehension abilities.
While the historical comparisons were interesting, she dwelled mostly on them rather than actually tying in the Hunger Games in depth. While the weapons chapter did explain what the different weapons were, she skimmed over some of the most used weapons (tridents--like Finnick favored--were lumped in with spears and hardly given attention even though main characters spoke of the trident more often than spears). When talking about the arenas in the series, she gave more attention to the set up of the Roman arenas. I can read about the Colosseum in history books or online; I would have preferred her own drawings about how she felt the Hunger Games arenas looked.
I feel as though the title of the book is erroneous and misleading. Gresh should have named her work "My Opinions on Historical and Current Events and Their Relation to the Hunger Games." This was NOT a companion to the series and it is definitely not child-appropriate (though the series does contain violence so they could probably handle it; I just wouldn't want to give the book to a child personally). Overall, Gresh misses the mark here and true Hunger Games fans would likely be disappointed with her inability to comprehend the plot points of Collins' series.

No New Information or Insight into the Series
By Eliza79
This book was disappointing and misleading.
As a fan of the series, I was hoping to read more about the Hunger Games characters and the world of Panem --- and instead, it contained a bunch of side notes about real-life historical "parallels" and such insights as "How the Body Eats Itself" (the biological process of starvation) as well as "Hype over Substance", a rundown of some modern-day reality shows... Um, Okay.
Readers of the Hunger Games books want to be further immersed in the imagined world of Panem - not given information on real-life examples of "killer kids".
After all, I didn't get into the series because I am curious about historical killing techniques, weaponry, or human survival instincts-- I became absorbed in the world itself and with the characters who inhabit it!
...and this book does nothing to illuminate that.

Simply Splendid
By takingadayoff
This collection of crosswords is perfect, not at all sneaky. I've become rather picky about crosswords over the years, maybe because there are so many choices. This small format book, about 6 by 9 inches, is the only size I buy anymore. It's small enough to take anywhere, but big enough to write in easily.

There are 150 puzzles, double the usual amount. They range from easy to difficult, Monday to Saturday and are all labeled. There are 20 puzzles each of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and 30 puzzles each of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This is the first time I've seen an easy to hard collection weighted toward the difficult and I like it. It's nice to have some easy puzzles to break up the tough ones, but the tough ones are really the most fun.

I can't tell the difference between Monday and Tuesday puzzles, they seem about the same level to me, pretty easy. Wednesday is easy but a little more interesting, and Thursday is getting more difficult, but almost always doable. Friday and Saturday seem to be the same level of difficulty, very hard. And Sunday (there are no Sunday puzzles in this collection) is about like Thursday in difficulty, but about twice as big.

Good collection!

The Title is Correct

The title is right, the clues are absolutely sneaky. I sometimes wonder if its harder to create the physical puzzle with all its words, or in coming up with devilishly fiendish clues.

A boy and a girl are stripped and marooned on a small island for the night. They are the "goats." The kids at camp think it's a great joke, just a harmless old tradition. But the goats don't see it that way. Instead of trying to get back to camp, they decide to call home. But no one can come and get them. So they're on their own, wandering through a small town trying to find clothing, food, and shelter, all while avoiding suspicious adults―especially the police. The boy and the girl find they rather like life on their own. If their parents ever do show up to rescue them, the boy and the girl might be long gone. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
A boy and the girl have been chosen as "the goats" at summer camp. Stripped naked, they are marooned on Goat Island, as part of an annual prank played on campers who don't fit in. But the goats have much more spirit than their fellow campers expect, and they decide to disappear completelythey aren't going to go back to camp unless they absolutely have to. On the run, Howie and Laura meet many different peoplesome who help them, others who try to stop thembut they soon learn how very strong they are themselves, and they come to depend on their own resourcefulness and cunning to evade those who are trying to find them. But Howie and Laura know that they must, at some point, face the world they've left behind. Cole has written and illustrated many picture books (The Winter Wren, The Giant's Toe), but this is his first work for older readers. Written with the mastery and sureness of a seasoned novelist, it is a gripping, startling and thought-provoking story about children who find inner strength when they are pushed to the edge. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8-10 Wimp, nerd, social retard some kids just naturally become scapegoats. Luckily an inner strength and an ability to survive sometimes surface, and these same scapegoats can confound their parents and acquaintances. Cole portrays this when fellow campers leave wimpy Howie Mitchell and ``real dog'' Laura Golden naked and scared on an island. When counselors arrive looking for them, Howie misunderstands and fears the return of their tormenters. He forces non-swimmer Laura to hang onto a log and float to the mainland. Reaching the safety of a deserted cabin, and realizing that they can't face returning to camp, they plot their survival until Parent's Weekend, when Laura's mother will visit, offering hope of sanctuary. Cole manages to instill just the right amount of suspense in their adventures through a potentially dangerous street kid, a cleaning woman who wants to turn them in to the police, and a sheriff who eventually snags them. Neither Howie nor Laura are initially likable kids, each either worrying or whining too much, but as they grow so does one's regard for them. The final distillation is a strong, well-blended story of modern day survival. A comparable book for older readers would be Lloyd Kropp's Greencastle (Freundlich, 1987). Pam Spencer, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Fairfax County, Va.

Two teens find each other after being humiliated by peers.
By A Customer
As a voracious reader, I am always looking for a book that
will take over my mind, my heart and my soul in one fell
swoop. Imagine my surprise to find a book like this in a
course on Children's Literature.

Brock Cole has written nothing less than a masterpiece.
His book, The Goats, begins with two outcast, nerdy campers, a boy and a
girl, who are stripped bare and left on Goat Island by their
mean and nasty fellow campers. When they first find each
other, naked and alone, they seem almost infantile in their
needs. These two couldn't take care of themselves with
clothes on, let alone off. Amazingly though, with the
strength of their pride and humiliation behind them, they vow
to get off the island and teach their fellow campers a lesson. What
ensues is not quite plausible, yet totally believable.
Abandoned not only by their camp mates, but on a much
deeper level by their parents as well, these two goats
manage to survive in the most extraordinary ways.

The most exceptional part of Cole's story is not how they
survive physically, but how they survive mentally and
emotionally. These two thirteen year olds, on the cusp of
sexuality, develop an intensely intimate relationship. Cole
has written something so beautiful, so adult-like, but it is
doubtful that many adults ever really attain this level of
intimacy. Literally stripped naked physically, the two
characters find shelter and clothes within themseves, in their
relationship with each other.

Anyone who wants to be touched in the deepest way, to come
away from a book changed, will find the great
satisfaction with Brock Cole's The Goats.

SURVIVING ON THE FRINGE OF SOCIETY
By A Customer
Wow, this book really holds your interest, hooking the reader's sympathy for the Boy and the Girl right from the start. You just Have to continue reading to see how they cope with sudden abandonment (supposed to be temporary) and decide to get even with the cruel kids at summer camp. Loss of clothing, money, self respect--just a malicious joke, you understand, to "punish" two social misfits.
Through no fault of their own, two pre teens were chosen to be their camp's annual sacrificial victims (i.e. goats), by being forced to spend a few embarrassing hours on a nearby island. Ha-ha--very funny to the terrified kids, who recognize their degrading situation and who ultimately reject the decision. Thus Howie and Laura (who did not even know each other) are forced to rely on each other's wits and daring (strengths they did not realize that they possessed) to reverse the kids' malicious decree. Not only to escape their dismal fate, but to survive on the outskirts of society for 3 days. They determine to get even, to pay them back for all the humiliation. Anything rather than endure the ridiule of returning to camp.
They decide to be proactive to preserve their own digntiy, to wait until the girl's mother comes up for Parents' Weekend. The plot rivets your attention for the kids must overcome incredible obstacles--posed by adutls and other kids--to live without the pale. It is unlikely that such social outcasts could be transformed so quickly into a cool "bandit" and a "fox wearing glasses", but the plot presents an interesting concept of social and physical survival. The book reads swiftly due to extensive dialogue, without the usual teenage platitudes. Their journey of self-discovery makes a fascinating read, with dark social undertones. For kids of all ages and adults harboring hurt kids inside. You will not be disappitned!

Pastor Needs a Boo (Pastor's Aid Club), by Michele Andrea Bowen

Michele Andrea Bowen made a name for herself years ago during the African-American inspirational fiction craze. Now, in Pastor Needs a Boo, she's back with an amazing journey of faith, drama, and love.
It was a regular New Jerusalem Gospel United Church work day for Reverend Denzelle Flowers when Veronica Washington, Keisha Jackson, and Marsha Metcalf showed up after losing their jobs on the same day, same morning, and almost at the same time. Denzelle struggled to solve that first problem. The other problem―the lovely Marsha―would be much harder to solve. Denzelle didn't even know how to fight wanting to turn in the playah's card and getting "booed" up with the poster girl for "church girls."
Marsha Metcalf and her fellow unemployed church members aren't Denzelle's biggest problem, though. He is running for bishop, and his enemies―a more ruthless consortium of corrupted clergy―want power badly enough to go to rather extreme lengths for it because the stakes are just that high. Now, his ex-wife was back and sleeping with the enemy, digging for dirt. Reverend Denzelle can't fight this battle alone. This pastor needs a ‘boo' who will stand by his side. Before the dust settles, both Marsha and Denzelle's faith and love will be put to the ultimate test.

From Booklist
Bowen brings readers the story of retired FBI-agent Reverend Denzelle Flowers, a character introduced in More Church Folk (2010). And when Marsha, Veronica, and Keisha show up at the New Jerusalem Gospel United Church after losing their jobs, and Reverend Flowers hires them to run the Pastor’s Aide Club, Bowen sets up the premise for a new trilogy. In this installment, Marsha, who has captured Denzelle’s less-than-holy interest, is in charge of running his campaign for bishop. Behind that effort are the machinations of other characters from Bowen’s previous works who are up to no good. Meanwhile, Marsha is getting tired of mixed messages from Denzelle, even as she plans a Dancing with the Stars event to kick off the campaign, which includes a chance to dance with him. Bowen’s newest tale has a slightly sexy, edgier feel, which will appeal to younger readers while retaining her many fans. Bowen takes her time setting up the church politics and the characters’ problems, but adds plenty of humor to keep readers going to the perfect ending. --Amy Alessio

Review

“Readers will find themselves laughing out loud at certain bits. Underneath it all are acute observations about African-American history and community. Readers who went to church with Bowen before will be delighted to return, and her choir should get bigger.” ―Publishers Weekly on More Church Folk

“This inspirational novel uses humor, local color, and vividly descriptive, if startling, language to good effect, ably demonstrating once again why Bowen is the queen of African American Christian fiction.” ―Booklist on More Church Folk

About the Author

Michele Andrea Bowen grew up in St. Louis, MO, with a large, church-going family. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, and also the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked in Social Work, Public Health, and Education.
Michele became one of the groundbreaking writers in the area of contemporary African American Christian Fiction when her first novel, Church Folk, was published in the summer of 2001. She continued to delight her readers with down-home, funny, uplifting, and heartwarming novels like Second Sunday, Holy Ghost Corner, Up at the College, and More Church Folk.
Now, she will reach out to readers with a brand new three-part novel series called "The Pastor's Aide Club." Pastor Needs A Boo, the first novel in the series, will be out this summer (2014). It answers, finally, all of the questions readers have had about Pastor-FBI Agent, Rev. Denzelle Flowers.
But don't worry, the other two novels in "The Pastor's Aide Club" series, Praying Like Crazy and The Sunday Soul Singles Club, are sure to ‘set to rest' questions readers have had about Charles Robinson and Veronica Washington, along with Charles' employee, Bay Bowser. When readers finish having some serious laughter-filled ‘shaking my head' moments from Pastor Needs A Boo, they will definitely be ready for a second and third helping of ‘Miss Michele's contemporary church folk' with Praying Like Crazy and The Sunday Soul Singles Club.

God fearing woman meets fine minister.
By Affaire de Coeur
When I first saw the title of this book, I wasn’t sure if I appreciated it. Being a former First Lady of a Black church, I was a little apprehensive about the subject matter. But after laughing out loud at least four times before reaching the second chapter, I was totally hooked! This is one of the most truthful, hilarious accountings of Black churches and the goings on behind the scenes (without being spiteful or mean), that I have ever had the privilege to read. Ms. Bowen is a genius and makes the reader feel like they are actually attending the meetings, services and conventions of the churches with all their characters, personalities, politics and high jinks. This is a laugh out loud read from start to finish!

Absolutely Hilarious!!!!!
By whitfield25
I absolutely loved this book! These church folk are out of control in their quest for more money and more power. They are creeping, hiring hit men and taking bribes. A few times I had to ask myself just who or what do these people really believe in? The well-developed characters kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I am so glad that Pastor Denzelle Flowers, Marsha and the other devoted members stayed true to their beliefs. I received this book, free, in a Goodread's First Reads Giveaway. Thank you! Although it is my first book by this author, it won't be my last!

Like the story but to much details or it may be filler. Not enough conversation between the characters.

Clever Aunt Ant has just moved to the zoo. Speaking in homophones, she describes the quirky animal behavior she sees. There's the MOOSE who loved MOUSSE and ATE EIGHT bowls, and the WHALE who was ALLOWED to WAIL ALOUD―and that's just for starters.
This playful picture book introduces children to the richness of language through the concept of homophones. A romp through the zoo has never been so eye-opening.

Fun, silly and educational!
By P. Smith
The first time I read this one to my four-year-old we both ended up laughing so hard we could hardly breathe. It's a cool concept, teaching kids about homophones.... words that are spelled differently, have different meanings, but sound the same. The premise of the story is that Aunt Ant is writing to her nephew, Dear Deer, and giving him an update on all her neighbors and friends. Some of the words I had to explain to my son but by and large he got it. It was almost at the end when we got to the gnus that it turned so funny. Jack pointed to the picture of the gnu on the page and asked what that was. I said a gnu. He pointed to the other one and asked what that was. I said a gnu. He said "Well, what about them?" And I read from the page, "There is no news about the gnus. They keep to themselves." Well, that just put both of us in stitches. We laughed so hard we couldn't stop. Ok, maybe you had to be there. But, it's just a plain fun, silly, and yes, educational book. Buy it.
