Amazon.com Review
Prepare to be absolutely charmed by Jennifer Crusie's riotous tale of two slightly twisted sisters and a town chock full of hunks, coots, and petty politics in Welcome to Temptation.

Sophie and Amy Dempsey are just two wedding filmers trying to hop to the next level of their careers when they agree to produce a documentary of aging film star Clea Whipple's return to her hometown of Temptation, Ohio. And when the local mayor, Phin Tucker, and the police chief, Wes Mazur, proffer themselves as willing subjects for quick flings, Sophie and Amy aren't the type to object. But things are never easy in rural Ohio, and what starts off as an esoteric art film project soon evolves into potential porn--and that's just the relationships, let alone the documentary. Clea's husband Zane turns belly-up, the race for mayor turns dirty, and Sophie and Phin turn on the heat full steam.

With hot sex, clever characters, and Crusie's trademark wit, Welcome to Temptation will keep your eyes glued to the page and your stomach aching with laughter. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

From Publishers Weekly
Crusie's saucy feminist romp stars a heroine who captures her man's heart, and then goes after his job, meanwhile enjoying "headbanging sex," filming soft porn and acquiring both a house and a dog named Lassie. A car crash welcomes Sophia Dempsey to Temptation, Ohio, as she arrives from Cincinnati to help her hot-tempered, smart-mouthed sister, Amy, film a video with a washed-up local actress. Sophie's misgivings about small-town Temptation increase when she sees the town's rusted welcome sign: "We Believe in Family Values." Yet unconventional Sophie soon ditches her boyfriend (who is also her ex-therapist) and falls for Phineas Tucker, Temptation's macho mayor, scion of the town's premier political family and single father. News of the Dempsey sisters' film prompts the prudish town council to institute an antiporn ordinance, which Phin is obligated to uphold while he inspires Sophie's experiments with sexy camerawork. Crusie adroitly mixes the outrageous and the practical, modern feminism and old-fashioned romance, and adds a liberal dose of razor-sharp humor. Sophie's effort to enact the mayor's favorite sexual fantasy is thwarted by interruptions by various townspeople confessing to murder, while, in one hilarious highlight, Sophie's costume for the evening falls victim to the laws of gravity. Minor characters offer more humor and romance: the police chief and the ex-juvenile delinquent, Sophie's scheming brother and his ex-wife, the porn king and the town debutante, Phin's daughter and his mother. Like a stand-up comic, Crusie (Crazy for You) charms with her brisk, edgy style, and the repartee between Sophie and Phin keeps energy and sexual tension high. A romantic comedy that adds luster to the genre, this effervescent tale will please readers who can relate to Sophie's undaunted exploration of all her desires. Agent, Meg Ruley. Author tour. (Mar.)

From Library Journal
Sophie and Amy Dempsey arrive in the small Ohio town of Temptation to film a movie. The star is an actress who is trying to revive her failing career by coming back to her hometown. The two sisters become involved in social and political affairs, including romantic entanglements. Matters become more complicated when a murder occurs. One of the high points of this novel is the relationship between the two sisters. Even though they have very different personalities, they are always open and honest with one another, help and support each other, and share their innermost thoughts. Crusie's constant touch of humor and wit come through in Aasne Vigesaa's reading, with his distinct and lively characterizations. Recommended for public library collections. Be Still My Beating Heart!
By paula_k_98
A water tower that resembles a sex organ, former con artists shooting a documentary that turns into a soft porn movie, hot sex, and murder--what more could you cram into a novel? Try a terrific, sexy hero, a strong heroine, a wonderful secondary cast of characters that we've all met at some point in our lives, and a quaint little town. Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie packs it all into its 341 pages. Not only is this a sharp looking book, it lives up to its appearance. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. This is a delightful romp that captivates you from beginning until the end. If you're looking for pure entertainment--read this book. One word of caution for those who want a rating system on books, it's steamy not only for the sex but the language. Frankly, Temptation wouldn't have been Temptation without both.

Temptation is HOT HOT HOT!
By Caroline P. Hampton
"Welcome to Temptation" bring a whole new definiton to "Sex, Lies and Videotape." This hilarious, sexy and down right enjoyable new novel by Jennifer Crusie is fabulous. Main characters Sophie and Amy take a romp into small town Ohio to make a movie. Well...they get way more than they hoped for. They get a murder, a bunch of lies, Big trouble for making a porno flick, stolen money, adultry, for some.....sex on a boat dock. This book has everything in it. It's a pure riot.
Other main characters, Mayor Fin, Police Chief Wes, the girls brother Davey, Fin's mother and his enchanting daughter. She's a real riot. I adored her character. She was sweet, SMART, and O' so charming.
This book had everything a summer novel should have. It was a fast read, delightfully entertaining and down right sexy. I loved everything about it. RUSH right to that credit card and get yourself a copy! :)

Fear and Loathing (and Lust) in...Ohio?
By ladybug10
Poor Sophie Dempsey. She's the responsible sister who's always pulling her siblings' chestnuts out of the fire and never getting to have a good time - until the Dempsey sisters pull into Temptation, Ohio, and announce their presence in a fender bender with the conservative Pillar of the Community, Stephen Garvey, and his lovely wife Virginia. A cast of characters unfolds in the wake of broken sunglasses and an increasingly pornographic video, with speed and whacked-ness that would make Hunter Thompson proud. A murder mystery wrapped up in an unfolding but slightly cracked love story set in a Peyton-place village in middle America, where people aren't what they seem, water towers imitate phallic lipsticks, and if you don't lock your kitchen door, your neighbor may just walk in and find you having head banging sex on the table...you'll feel like you're hurtling through this story only half in control of your convertible! Watch Sophie's sister, Amy, push the edge of the envelope of her irresponsibility until it tears...see Phineas awaken from the mind numbing task of being a small town mayor trying to get the town council to make important decisions like what kind of street lights to install...thrill as Sophie, the professional caretaker, loses all her sexual inhibitions...and don't miss the fading porn queen who can still seduce little boys, her long-ago flame and his Coppertone-blonde-gone-crocodile-wrinkled wife, the thoughtful, but sexy police chief, the small-town girl who wants out, the neurotic porn producer who discovers a little late that he has standards after all, the middle-aged liberal war protester, the Dempsey brother with the heart of a Robin Hood and the mind of an ex-con, and the local matriarch (who else? Phin's mother) who reminds us all that you can't buy or sleep your way into privilege. Oh, I forgot - don't miss the lacquered news anchorman who, like everybody else in this little gem, gets exactly what's coming to him...
I recommend this book, but fasten your seatbelt. You'd think a story set in a little town in Ohio would be slower, but, no, it's like petting a kitten and finding out that it's a tiger! I'll be reading her other stuff, because I liked what I found here.
By the way, whoever designed the cover is a genius. Perfectly wrought symbolism.

Scones for two? A batch of eight cookies? Three brownies hot out of the oven? These tiny yields are the norm for recipes in Maugans's second Small-Batch Baking title. "Scaled back to manageable proportions," recipes produce handfuls of baked goods, ideal for the single person, those counting calories, or must-eat-fresh-out-of-the-oven die-hard bakers. The self-proclaimed "chocoholic" uses the cacao bean in various forms including unsweetened cocoa powder, milk chocolate bars, bittersweet chocolate chips, and even chocolate milk in her recipes for cakes, pies and tarts, and more. Clever ideas include baking "baby-layer" cakes in cans and making soufflés in eight-inch ramekins. Classic desserts such as red velvet cake and chocolate chip cookies are alongside less-than-traditional combinations including chocolate lime bread and java choco-banana muffins. A lack of photography may prevent gift buyers scanning the shelves from noticing, but chocolate lovers and those who want small yields will appreciate this straightforward title. (Feb.)

From Booklist
With more and more American households consisting of just one or two people, its often difficult to find recipes that dont end up wasting food with quantities that are meant to fill four, six, or more mouths. Maugans comes to the rescue of such challenged bakers with a collection of chocolate desserts that serve just two. Pastry dough can be cut back to yield bases for just a couple of tarts. She suggests a number of cookie recipes, such as a dark chocolate pistachio shortbread or oatmeal chocolate raisin cookies. Desserts can be simple or as elaborate as layered turtle cheesecake. Even bread pudding can be reduced to a pair of small portions. In some cases, special small pans are required, but often its a matter of using just a couple of the holes in a standard muffin tin or improvising with some recycled tin cans. --Mark Knoblauch

It is like an easy bake oven only better!!!
By PattyLouise
I love this book!!! It manages to help you create amazing yummy desserts but not in huge quantities. Sometimes I only want a baby chocolate cake or a few cookies...not an enormous quantity. The chocolate cake on the cover can be made in washed out clean as a whistle tuna cans...or soup cans!!! The best thing about this book for me is that my mom saved all of my toy bakeware and I am using them for some of these recipes. It is a wonderful book for a small family or when you just want a teeny little taste of something!!!

The Best Chocolate Things Come In Small Packages
By Charles G. Thompson
The best things come in small packages. In the case of "Small-Batch Baking for Chocolate Lovers," the best chocolate things come in small packages. Author Debby Maugans perfected the art of baking for one or two people in her first book, "Small Batch Baking." Realizing that the average recipe produced a larger quantity of the end product than a single person, or couple may want to eat, or be able to finish she revised recipes so that the serving sizes were more appropriate for one or two people. A pretty smart idea in and of itself.

Being the professed chocoholic she is, Maugans saw a need for a small-batch cookbook for chocolate lovers. And thank goodness she did! In the introduction to the book she explains that her go-to dessert choice is always something with chocolate. I couldn't agree more. Out at a restaurant I always go for chocolate desserts over any others. Often I won't have a dessert if there is nothing with chocolate in it. I, too, love chocolate and I know that I'm not alone. This is a book I'll use often.

Smartly so, Maugans begins the book with a chapter called "Small-Batch Chocolate Baking Know-How" which explains everything you need to know to start small-batch baking. From the equipment needed, to ingredients and measuring techniques, to storage of ingredients, it's all spelled out. Then the fun really begins. The chapters unfold from cakes and cupcakes; to pies, tarts, and cheesecakes; to puddings and soufflés; to muffins, scones, shortcakes, and loaves; to desserts that are "better with chocolate"; to holiday desserts, and finally liquid pleasures. I'd say the gamut of possibilities is well-covered. I knew Maugans was a serious chocolate lover in the chapter titled "Better with Chocolate" in which she takes desserts that are normally not made with chocolate and adds it. Cinnamon rolls with chocolate rolled up with the nuts and cinnamon sugar. Baklava with chocolate in the nut filling.

A good chocolate chip cookie recipe is worth its weight in gold -- I mean, chocolate. Maugans' recipe for "Simply the Best Small-Batch Chocolate Chip Cookies" is so good it might be the best small or large batch recipe around. Soft, gooey, super-chocolatey deliciousness, (yield 8 cookies). Other recipes I tried and loved were Classic Chocolate Cake, (yield 2 cakes, or 4 cupcakes); Chocolate Decadence Cheesecakes (yield 2 cheesecakes); Ultimate Brownies (yield 3 brownies), and Whole Wheat Chocolate Banana Bread (Maugans is right, chocolate added to banana bread is a revelation) (yield 1 loaf, 4 or 5 slices). There are plenty more I want to try including several recipes for ice cream cakes. One comment re the yields, Maugans uses recycled tin cans such as 8 oz., 14.5 oz., and 15 oz. tomato sauce, or bean cans in the cakes recipes hence the yield of 2 small, single-serving sized cakes. She has a few other tricks like this to make small-batch baking work.

If you live alone, or are a couple, and don't want to make desserts that yield enough for a family of six -- and you love chocolate -- then "Small-Batch Baking for Chocolate Lovers" is for you. Actually, I'd say it's for anyone who wants to reduce the size of their desserts, or dessert intake. With only eight chocolate chip cookies there will be none leftover to tempt a middle-of-the-night craving.

Clearer than the first one!
By A. Chow
I have the original Small-Batch Baking by this author, and I must admit the original was a little more complex and laid out in a slightly more confusing way. This time around, the pages are single-column, not double-column, and the "makes X cookies" or "makes X cakes" is easy to see at one glance.

The original Small-Batch Baking also had a lot of recipes I wasn't particularly fond of for various reasons having to do with me being a picky eater. A chocolate-focused small-batch baking book? Absolutely perfect. It's just me eating them, after all; my husband doesn't like cakes and isn't all that particularly fond of most cookies either, and we don't have any children (yet). Small batches of chocolate treats for me to eat over a weekend make this book absolutely perfect.

Good for moms who have preemie babies
By CrackBabysMom
21 Years ago I had a 1 pound 12 ounce baby and it was a hard time for my husband and me. I was given this book and it helped me understand from a medical perspective what was going on with my baby and why. This book has quite a bit of information but is designed to be put into terms that anyone can understand. I still have my copy and I bought this one to give to a mom dealing with the same issues today. I didn't know who she was as she was a friend of someone I work with, but I found out that she found it to be easy to understand as well. Pictures are little out dated but the information is good and could be used for someone writing a report for school.

Laurel's Primer for Parents of Micro-Preemies
By Lawrence J. Gist II
As the father of two identical twin girls born at 26 weeks andaveraging 2 pounds each -- I found The Premature Baby Book to be veryhelpful in gaining an understanding of premature care and treatment. Iordered the book written by Helen Harrison and Ann Kositsky (as wellas several others) and found their book to be the most comprehensiveof books on the market addressing premature birth. My only criticismof the book is that many of the statistics utilized within the bookare out-dated and present a somewhat pessimistic view regardingpremature survival and disabilities. I highly recommend this book ifyou have a premature child.
Note that my daughter, Laurel, did notsurvive. After 24 days of making steady improvement, Laurel contractedNEC and rapidly deteriorated. Laurel's identical twin sister, Caitlin,is now 2 1/2 years old and is both health and happy. However, in manyways my mind and feelings still live the trauma of my children beingmicro-preemies. In Laurel's memory I wrote a booklet (distributed forfree) just for parents of micro-preemies. The booklet is not intendedto replace the book length treatment of the issues addressed in ThePremature Baby Book, rather the booklet is designed to give parentssome basic information pending the arrival of their Amazon order...that you have the need to order The Premature Baby Book. You and yourfamily will be in my thoughts.

The Preemie Bible..
By shellic@worldnet.att.net
This book is considered the NICU/preemie bible. Anyone with a child born prematurely would find the information in this book helpful -- although the book is rather old, it contains information that can lead you to ask the right questions, to ask for the right tests, etc. etc.

My son was born prematurely but I didn't find this book until months after he was released from NICU. The moment I got it I absorbed everything I could and wished I'd had it when my son was still in NICU. It answers questions that doctors tend to dance around. The author is a very nice woman -- I've talked with her online in preemie support groups and I understand she is working on an updated version.

The stories of various "outcomes" of preemies was especially moving for me. If you know someone who has a child in NICU or who recently had a preemie, this is an excellent book to recommend. I think every NICU should have a copy to loan to parents.

The Price of the Ticket: Collected Nonfiction, 1948-1985, by James Baldwin

The works of James Baldwin constitute one of the major contributions to American literature in the twentieth century, and nowhere is this more evident than in The Price of the Ticket, a compendium of nearly fifty years of Baldwin's powerful nonfiction writing. With truth and insight, these personal, prophetic works speak to the heart of the experience of race and identity in the United States. Here are the full texts of Notes of a Native Son, Nobody Knows My Name, The Fire Next Time, No Name in the Street, and The Devil Finds Work, along with dozens of other pieces, ranging from a 1948 review of Raintree Country to a magnificent introduction to this book that, as so many of Mr. Baldwin's works do, combines his intensely private experience with the deepest examination of social interaction between the races. In a way, The Price of the Ticket is an intellectual history of the twentieth-century American experience; in another, it is autobiography of the highest order.

From School Library Journal
YA Compiled into one volume are James Baldwin's essays from the past three decades. Except for the lead article, "The Price of the Ticket," all have been published before. The selections are arranged in chronological order and include his three book-length essays, "The Fire Next Time," "No Name in the Street" and "The Devil Finds Work." Baldwin's writings on the civil rights movement, his analysis of Richard Wright's Native Son (Harper, 1940) and his thoughts on his childhood experiences are a few of the topics in this volume. Baldwin details his hopes, his joys, his bitterness and his feelings about himself, other blacks and especially white America. The earlier works seem somewhat theatrical and histrionic, his later ones toned down to a more pure and clear style. All of them are brilliant, intense and passionate. For those collections that do not have copies of these previously published works. Pat Royal, Prince George's County Public School System, Md.

Review
"Together, these essays document the changes and development of intellectual styles and values between the period when they were written for such magazines as New Leader and Partisan Review and the present . . . The Price of the Ticket collects much of the best work of one of our finest living writers."—Sam Cornish, The Christian Science Monitor

"James Baldwin's essays on race in America are enlightening, entertaining and, because of his remarkable prescience, a bit eerie . . . In these 51 pieces all of which appeared in magazines or previous collections, Mr. Baldwin covers a diverse range of subjects. But a theme runs through them all—many of our national ills stem from a retreat from self-knowledge. This country's mistreatment of blacks is the best symbol of the discordance between the American myth and reality, Mr. Baldwin contends."—Salim Muwakkil, The New York Times Book Review

"James Baldwin became a national figure and remained one until his death, two years before which his collected nonfiction, The Price of the Ticket, came out. Anyone wishing to take Baldwin's measure as a man and writer while, incidentally, getting a vivid picture of Harlem during World War II, must begin with this book."—William Corbett, author of New York Literary Lights

Incredibly heartfelt essays
By Scott Woods
Baldwin was a great writer, not only because he told a compelling story, but because he wanted his work to change the world he lived in and, on some levels, it did. No other example of this intention is more apprant than Baldwin's non-fiction work. His essays are timely (even now), filled with biting intelect, and brimming with his trademark ability to wind around an issue.
This book is all the more relevant because it saves you time: it collects his 3 book-length essays ("Fire Next Time", "No name In The Street" and "The Devil Finds Work"), as well as a ton of other pieces. It's almost totally comprehensive in this respect. Revealing and a more than trustworthy look at the man from his own mouth, and over the years.

Best American essayist
By Gary Britson
With the possible exception of Tom Paine and Gore Vidal, Baldwin is the finest essayist. Most of his non-fiction is here, including his groundbreaking essay "Fifth Avenue, Uptown," the best single essay I have ever read. Of special interest, as one who enjoys movie criticism, is the entire book "The Devil Finds Work," in which Baldwin happily takes apart a number of American classic films. I was never wild about Baldwin's fiction, but no one could top him as an essayist. If you are buying one American non-fiction book, this should be the one.

The Best Writer Few Seem to Know
By William Alexander
James Baldwin is one of the most straightforward but complex American writers I have ever encountered. Best known for his groundbreaking works like "Giovanni's Room" and "I Don't Know How Long the Train's Been Gone," these essays - fascinating ruminations on race, gender, sexuality, cinema, and sometimes just the nature of fame itself - are artfully assembled. In this book, cover to cover, you see the work of a true intellectual - someone who evolves in his thinking as the years go by, someone whose even most casual observation is fraught with meaning because of an almost tragic refusal to "see" things for what anything other than what they are. Baldwin himself was a controversial figure - African American man of letters, gay, steeped in the culture of both the Haarlem Renaissance, the ecstatic church, and post-war Paris, a civil rights lion who was still unafraid to discuss the contradictions of a movement he feared would tear itself apart. But his writing is almost like reading the work of a magician, remarkable in its "passionate dispassion" and unflinching willingness to deal with subjects from his own unique point(s) of view, subjects others would eschew or refuse to touch. He is not a "comfortable" writer. His was an intellect and achievement that does the near impossible - deals with themes most "human" and yet seemingly transcends those very limitations, limitations that would have felled a lesser artist. At his best, he even achieves an eerie prescience, and not in some generalized fashion. His prose is not compromising.

I also note that some of Mr. Baldwin's lectures and interviews are now on YouTube. And those make great companions to any reading of his works.

I recommend this book without reservation. The work of a unique American "master" performing at his absolute best.

Enormously Pleased Teacher
By Talley V. Kayser
I used this textbook to structure my project-based research and composition classes. I could not be more pleased with it!

Innovative, engaging assignments - all of which obviously connected to the overarching project - helped students carefully consider their assumptions about various subcultures, then test those assumptions through real-world interaction with subculture members. The tone and style of the book is direct and conversational, but the authors don't sugar-coat the difficulties and subtleties of ethnographic work. The extra dimension this brought to a basic "English 101" course was...well. As long as an administration is comfortable with using ethnography in a comp class, I will use this book to guide my teaching.

Praxis Makes Perfect!
By demarychase
This title serves not only as a unique view on the art and craft of fieldworking, but allows the reader an insider's view of the data-gathering, analysis and writing processes the field demands. Readers will learn about methods and models, as well as gain insights on hands-on practice. Besides providing a useful handbook for researchers, Sunstein and Strater offer up a very good read for all of us interested in ethnographic methods.
