Not Bad but not what I expected
By Milton C. Von Minden
I realize now that the product description for Crosswords for the Holidays is incorrect. Or at least it was when I ordered it. The description is actually for The New York Times Little Black and White Book of Crosswords. There are 300 not 200 puzzles in this book. 300 New York Times puzzles is not a bad thing at all. My biggest disappointment was that I was expecting puzzle themes associated with the holidays. So far, I have not seen any connection. It is just another nice little book of New York Times crosswords and there is nothing wrong with that.

Dodger for President (Dodger and Me), by Jordan Sonnenblick

In this second installment of Jordan Sonnenblick's Dodger and Me series, the humor runs high, the friendships run deep, and Dodger continues to run on French fries and good intentions.

What would you do if your best friend was:

1. Still imaginary (and still an oversize blue chimp with major junk-food issues)?
2. Nominating you to run for class president – against the most popular kid in your grade?
3. In charge of your campaign posters…all blue, of course, including your face!?
4. Planning a magical secret weapon to help you win (not fair and square, right?)?
5. Driving you crazy?!?!

Now you have an idea of what Willie Ryan's life is like as his adventures with Dodger continue. The last thing Willie wants to do is run for class president, but both his running mate, Lizzie, and Dodger won't let him quit – and have their own ideas of how to run a campaign, especially against James Beeks, Mr. Popularity.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3–6—This sequel to Dodger and Me (Feiwel and Friends, 2008) continues the adventures of Willie Ryan and his invisible friend, Dodger, a blue chimp with magical powers. While attending school disguised as Willie (with the help of a magic potion), Dodger agrees to run for fifth-grade class president with Willie's friend Lizzie as running mate. Willie thinks the election is a lost cause, since their opponents are "popular kid" James and "scary tough kid" Craig, but his friends encourage him to stick with it. His little sister Amy (whose suspicious nature is sometimes annoying and sometimes surprisingly helpful) rounds out the cast. Told in the first-person colloquial, leavened with ironic silliness and mild gross-out humor, the narrative will be familiar to readers of James Proimos and Jeff Kinney. There's also a bit of depth, especially when the less sympathetic characters show more complexity than most grade-school villains. But some of the humor is a bit forced and kids who have not read the earlier book will definitely be in the dark about Dodger and his magic. From Booklist
Picking up where Dodger and Me (2008) left off, Sonnenblick continues the story of friends Willie and Lizzie and the magical blue chimp, Dodger, that only they can see. The formula is much the same—dorky kid helped out by invisible ally—but here it’s applied to a school election that has Willie and Lizzie facing off against a superpopular jock and his tough-guy sidekick. And again, Dodger spends most of the book bouncing off the walls, espousing zany schemes that mostly serve to hamstring the kids’ campaign. While the broad humor generally reaches for lower-hanging fruit, the outlandish tone should please Dodger’s fans. Grades 4-6. --Ian Chipman

Review

“The outlandish tone should please Dodger's fans.” ―Booklist

“Dodger's silly sense of humor is entertaining, and the situations in which Willie finds himself will have any reader laughing out loud. Willie's awkward affection for his friend Lizzie is a sweet aside to the story. Reluctant readers will find themselves cheering on Willie and wanting to read more in the series.” ―VOYA

“A magical tale of affection, family, and a boy's imaginative ('imaginary' doesn't do it justice) friendship with an inspired, demented blue chimpanzee...” ―Kirkus Reviews on Dodger and Me

“The humor will draw kids, including Dodger's off-the-wall dialogue and the outlandish predicaments that result when he decides to 'help.'” ―Booklist on Dodger and Me

Humor with Heart

Hilarious! An insecure boy, his new friend (a large blue chimp named Dodger), and lots of adventure and baseball. Readers of all ages will appreciate Dodger's surfer accent (very funny to read aloud). If your young reader is too old for Captain Underpants and is reading longer books, this is perfect. It's not easy to find funny books with a great story, and this one delivers. Can't wait for the next one.

DODGER AND ME is the first book in a new series by Jordan Sonnenblick .

In this book we meet Willie Ryan, self-proclaimed wimp. The fact that Willie is definitely a wimp is immediately evident when he becomes the reason his baseball team loses the first game in the championship series. One might think it is bad enough that Willie can neither catch nor hit a ball, but Willie has more wrong with his life.

To start, his mother is so overprotective that a simple nosebleed becomes an emergency of epic proportions. If that is not bad enough, his best friend has moved away and asked Lizzie, a British student at his school, to keep an eye on him. Lizzie takes this request very seriously and follows him everywhere, even to the big game where she embarrasses him by cheering him on despite his horrendous playing ability.

Tired of always following the rules and getting nowhere, Willie takes a shortcut home. Though he imagines his mother's warnings to stay on the beaten path, Willie cuts through the woods. He comes to a meadow where everything is blue, everything but the McDonald's bag that someone left lying in a stream. Always conscientious, Willie picks up the bag to dispose of it. To his shock, Dodger, a huge blue chimpanzee, appears in front of him.

Dodger sets on a course that is supposed to make Willie's life better. Dodger is going to make Willie's mother less domineering, he is going to make Lizzie go away, and he is going to make Willie a baseball star. Unfortunately for Willie, Dodger's version of wish granting is a little more hands-on than the traditional genie's. Thus follows a series of delightful antics that will make readers of all ages laugh.

The story shows a clear difference between what we think we want and the reality of that desire in a lighthearted way. Though the plotline is a bit predictable, readers will enjoy seeing how Dodger twists Willie's simple wishes into slapstick solutions. Sonnenblick uses laughter to show original ways to overcome or accept issues that many middle schoolers struggle to overcome on a daily basis: loneliness, athletic prowess, bullying, and the true meaning of friendship.

DODGER AND ME is such an enjoyable trip that readers will look forward to reading the next installment in this delightful series.

Amusing, good message
By Amazon Customer
Dodger and Me is the fourth book by Jordan Sonnenblick, and first aimed at elementary aged children. As I really enjoyed his previous three, I wanted to give this one a try.

Dodger and Me is centered around Willie, a 10-year-old who can best be described as a wimp or a loser. His mother is highly overprotective, and does not trust him at all. He also has no friends at school, although Lizzie, a girl he tries to avoid, lavishes him with attention. One day, after failing at the plate in his baseball game and causing his team to lose, Willie takes a forbidden shortcut through the woods to get to his house. As he is walking, he sees a fast food bag, and decides to pick it up so it will no longer spoil nature. After doing this, he is surprised by the appearance of a large blue talking chimpanzee wearing surfer shorts.

Willie begins speaking to the chimp, whose name is Dodger. Willie brings Dodger home, and he agrees to help Willie solve the three most vexing problems in his life - getting his mom to trust him, getting Lizzie to stop bothering him and becoming a better baseball player. Unfortunately for Willie, as Dodger is doing this, he also creates many new problems.

Dodger and Me was an enjoyable book with likable characters. Willie is a boy who wants to do the right thing, and Dodger is very amusing. The situations that Dodger gets Willie into are pretty funny, and kids would enjoy reading the book. I recommended it to my class, especially those who like books like Hank Zipzer. While I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie or Notes from the Midnight Driver, it was written for a different audience and it presents a good message.

The Cookie Exchange
This page intentionally left blank
What Is a Cookie Exchange?
Many hands make light work,” as the old saying goes. That is the essence of an old-fashioned cookie exchange.
To host a cookie exchange, you invite a group of friends, relatives, and neighbors over to your house to exchange homemade cookies. Every person brings about six dozen of one type of cookie. The cookies are laid out on the dining room table and exchanged. The result is that everyone goes home with an assortment of six dozen different types of cookies. The recipes are also swapped, so that if you take home a new cookie that you really like, you will be able to make it yourself. The cookie party can be given at any time during the year; however, most cookie exchange parties occur in December.
There are as many ways and reasons to host a cookie exchange party as there are people who give them. The party could be hosted as a one-time-only event, every couple of years, or annually. The majority who host a party for the first time are looking forward to making it an annual tradition for their friends and family. We all lead such busy lives, and a cookie exchange is a great time to reconnect with people you may not see on a regular basis.
Even though most cookie exchanges are given during the holidays, which is by far busiest season of year, it’s still the best time of year to do this party. On top of “normal life,” you then have the added workload of making “Christmas magic” by rushing around, trying to find parking spaces at busy malls, waiting in lines, buying and wrapping presents. You’re tired, stressed, your feet hurt, and you’re wondering where the meaning is in all of this hustle-bustle.
A Moment in Time
The Marion Daily Star, Marion, Ohio—September 13, 1895

TOMORROW.
At the ladies’ exchange at the Free Will Baptist church there will be found home-made bread, brown bread, cakes, pies, fried cakes, cookies, ginger bread, veal loaf, fresh eggs, dressed chickens, etc. A liberal patronage is earnestly desired.

I might even feel guilty asking you to add one more thing to your long to-do list. However, the cookie party gives back. It rejuvenates, and gives meaning and inspiration to the holidays, embodying the qualities that we all love best—friendship, food, and festivity. There is something about baking that forces you to slow down, and sharing cookies, which is edible proof of time spent for the benefit of others, is healing and giving at the same time. While you are baking, you also know that soon, very soon, you’ll be coming over to my house for a party and we are going to have a lot of fun!
The bonus for the guests, especially for those who describe themselves as non-bakers, is that after they leave the party they’ll go home with a yummy assortment of six dozen homemade cookies. Store-bought cookies just don’t compare. Your non-baking friends will now have home-baked cookies for their families, or they can give out little plates of home-baked love as gifts to their friends, relatives, and associates. Once you’ve started the tradition of hosting cookie exchanges, the holidays won’t seem the same without them!
Each person who goes to a cookie exchange party has her own reasons for attending. For my group of girls, who mostly identify themselves as non-bakers, coming to my cookie party is an opportunity to get a selection of different types of homemade cookies. Some people who attend don’t care as much about the cookies, but wouldn’t want to miss the party for anything! However, they know their ticket to get in the front door is a tray of home-baked cookies, so they dutifully bake.
A Moment in Time
Portsmouth Herald, Portsmouth, New Hampshire—December 30, 1916

The Willing Workers connected with the Government Street M.E. church are making plans for a cookie party in the near future.

Story time is always fun, especially when you have a group of non-baking friends “who killed themselves” to bake cookies to the best of their abilities and get to the party. Do you have a group of “non-bakers”? Here’s a party tip: Print out my baking tips and include them with the basic invitation and the Rules of the Cookie Exchange (see www.cookie-exchange.com/baking_tips.html).
While cookies are the focal point of the party, the guests are the real reason to host a party. A cookie exchange enables you to bring together people of various backgrounds, ages, and interests; they all have something in common on that one day. Everyone involved has had to spend the same amount of time, energy, money, and thought to participate. They all brought home-baked cookies, and all have stories to share of the baking adventures (or misadventures!) that they had before they got to my door.

ST. MARK’S LADIES AID
SOCIETY MEETS
The Ladies Aid Society of St. Mark’s church will meet Wednesday afternoon in the church parlors. The officers will be the hostesses and it will be a cookie party. All members and friends are invited to attend.

At weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations, the focus of the party is on the one or two people being honored. At a cookie exchange, every single person is highlighted and the focus is on each guest for a few minutes as they talk about their cookies. Everyone is a star! New friendships are forged, and after time they, too, become old friends who enjoy seeing each other, year after year, at the annual cookie exchange.
The History of the Cookie Exchange
In the earliest days of documentation, over one hundred years ago, they were referred to as “cookie parties.” By the 1930s, they began to be called “cookie exchanges.” The term “cookie swap” wasn’t popularized until the 1950s.
Historically, cookie exchange parties have been a ladies-only event. Exchanges were hosted by friends, relatives, neighbors, social groups, clubs, office co-workers, teams, schools, and churches. That’s currently changing, as other types of cookie exchange parties are emerging and becoming commonplace now: families with children included, men only, men and women, and cookie exchange parties used as a fund-raising tool. I’m often asked, “How old is the cookie exchange?” and “Who invented it?”
Throughout the millennia, sharing food has been the most elemental form of communication. If one were to encounter a group of semi-hostile strangers who spoke a different language, nothing says “I come in peace” more than outstretched arms containing platters of food. If you’re going to nourish someone, it’s likely that your intentions are peaceful.

Stafford, 242 Kensington Place, at 2 o’clock for a cookie exchange meeting. South Side Unit meets at the South Side Library at 1:30 for a lesson on remodeling hats given by Miss Maude Loftus.

The humble roots of the American Thanksgiving come to mind. The Pilgrims felt indebted to the Native Americans for teaching them how to live off the land. To show their appreciation, the Pilgrims invited the Indians over for a three-day celebration, and foods were shared from the harvest. Many parties are celebrated and forgotten. But this feast wasn’t; it launched a tradition celebrated by millions annually. What does that have to do with a cookie exchange? It’s completely natural to ask strangers to your feast: PEOPLE + FOOD = SHARING.
We’ll never know who first thought of the cookie-only exchange. However, the tradition of sharing foods has been going on for thousands of years, and will continue, for survival and celebration, for thousands more.

The Holy Grail of Cookie Exchange Books
By Colleen Cannatelli
Six years ago I was in search of a way to start a Cookie Exchange. I came upon Robins website, and started a family tradition. A few years later I purchased the workbook and took it up a notch. Now "The Cookie Party Cookbook is a comprehensive, informative, down to earth read. While reading the book several times I had the feeling I was sitting at the kitchen table talking with a girlfriend about a cookie swap. Robins expertise on the subject is evident in her comfortability and ease of delivering information and her down to earth writing.
Not only will the beginner feel confident to hostess a party, the experienced hostess will get step by step guidance and encouragement to be more creative and go bigger. There isn't any subject she didn't cover from save the dates, invites, menus, games and my particular favorite, Common Hosting Concerns. There was a lot of graceful ways to handle the sticky suitations.Keep an eye out for the recipes and cookie key.
I was moved to learn Robins background with baking and with the women who inspired her. This is a positive nuturing book. When your done I know you too will realize Cookie Exchanges are about so much more than just cookies. You will come away with an appreciation for friends, family, and tradition. Most of all an appreciation for Robin for writting this great book and helping you on your way to a much anticipated yearly tradition. Congratulations Robin

Cookie Party Cookbook
By D. Moore
Excellent information for hosting a Cookie Swap, including lots of cookie recipes, decoration suggestions, ice breaker and holiday games and menu suggestions. This is a terrific "how to" book. It provides information for both the first-time Cookie Swap hostess and for those who have held "annual" events.

DESTINED. (Chapter 1)

Aurox

The human male’s flesh had been soft, pulpy.

It had been a surprise how easy it had been to destroy him—to end the beating of his feeble heart.

“Take me to North Tulsa. I want to go out into the night,” she’d said. That was the command that began their evening.

“Yes, Goddess,” he’d responded instantly, coming alive from the corner of the rooftop balcony that he’d made his own.

“Do not call me Goddess. Call me…” She’d looked contemplative. “… Priestess.” Her full lips, slick and reddened, turned up. “I believe it is best if everyone should simply call me Priestess—at least for a short while.”

Aurox had fisted his hand over his heart in a gesture he instinctively knew was ancient, though it somehow felt awkward and forced. “Yes, Priestess.”

Priestess had brushed by him, gesturing imperiously for him to follow her.

He had followed.

He’d been created to follow. To take her orders. To obey her commands.

They’d entered something Priestess had called car, and the world had flown. Priestess had commanded him to understand the workings of it.

He’d watched and learned, just as she’d commanded.

Then they’d stopped and exited the car.

The street had smelled of death and rot, corruption and filth.

“Priestess this place is not—”

“Protect me!” she’d snapped. “But do not be protective of me. I will always go where I wish, when I wish, and do exactly what I wish. It is your job, no, your purpose to defeat my enemies. It is my destiny to create enemies. Watch. React when I command you to protect. That is all I require of you.”

“Yes, Priestess,” he’d said.

The modern world was a confusing place. So many shifting sounds. So much he did not know. He would do as Priestess commanded. He would fulfill his reason for creation and—

A male had stepped out, blocking Priestess’s way.

“You way too pretty to be in this here alley so late with nothin’ but one boy keepin’ ya company.” His eyes widened, as he took in Priestess’s tattoos. “So, vampyre, you stoppin’ here to get you a little snack from this boy? How ’bout you give me that purse then you and me, we’ll talk ’bout what it’s like to be with a real man?”

Priestess sighed and sounded bored. “You’re wrong on both counts: I am not simply a vampyre, and this is no boy.”

“Hey, what you mean by that?”

Priestess ignored the man and looked over her shoulder at Aurox.

“Now you should protect me. Show me what kind of weapon I command.”

He obeyed her without conscious thought. Aurox closed on the man with no hesitation. In one swift movement, Aurox plunged his thumbs into the man’s staring eyeballs, which made the screaming begin.

The man’s terror washed over him, feeding him. As simply as drawing a breath, Aurox inhaled the pain he was causing. The power of the man’s terror swelled through him, pumping hot and cold. Aurox felt his hands hardening, changing, becoming more. What had been normal fingers became claws. He pulled them from the man’s eyes when the blood began to seep from his ears. With the borrowed power of pain and fear, Aurox lifted the man, slamming him against the wall of the nearest building.

The man screamed again.

What a wonderful, terrible thrill! Aurox felt more of the change ripple through his body. Mere human feet became cloven hooves. The muscles of his legs thickened. His chest heaved and split the shirt he had been wearing. And most wonderful of all, Aurox felt the thick deadly horns that swelled from his head.

By the time the man’s three friends ran into the alley to help him, he had stopped screaming.

Aurox dropped the man to the filth and turned to place himself between Priestess and those who might believe they could cause her harm.

“What the fuck?” The first man skidded to a halt.

“I ain’t never seen nothin’ like that,” said the second man.

Aurox was already absorbing the fear that was beginning to radiate from them. His skin pulsed with the cold fire of it.

“Is they horns? Ah, hell no! I’m outta here.” The third man turned and scurried back the way he had come. The other two began to back slowly away, eyes wide, shocked and staring.

Aurox looked to Priestess. “What is your command?” In some distant part of his mind, he wondered at the sound of his voice—how it had become so guttural, so bestial.

“Their pain makes you stronger.” Priestess looked pleased. “And different, more fierce.” She looked at the two retreating men and her full upper lip lifted in a sneer. “Isn’t that interesting … Kill them.”

Aurox moved so quickly the nearest man had no chance to escape. He gored him through his chest, lifting him so that he writhed and shrieked and soiled himself.

This made Aurox even more powerful.

With a mighty toss of his head, the skewered man flew into the building to land, crumpled and silent, beside the first man.

The other man didn’t run away. Instead he pulled out a long, dangerous looking knife and charged at Aurox.

Aurox feinted to the side and then, when the man overcompensated, he stomped a cloven hoof through his foot, ripping off his face as the man fell forward.

Breathing hard, Aurox stood over the bodies of his vanquished enemies. He turned to Priestess.

“Very good,” she said in her emotionless voice. “Let us leave this place before the authorities descend.”

Aurox followed her. He walked heavily, his hoofs gouging furrows in the dirty alley. He fisted his claws at his side as he tried to make sense of the emotional storm that flowed through his body, taking with it the power that had fueled his battle frenzy.

Weak. He felt weak. And more. There was something else.

“What is it?” she snapped at him when he hesitated before entering the car again.

He shook his head. “I do not know. I feel—”

She laughed. “You don’t feel at all. You’re obviously overthinking this. My knife doesn’t feel. My gun doesn’t feel. You’re my weapon; you kill. Deal with it.”

“Yes, Priestess.” Aurox got in the car and let the world speed past him. I do not think. I do not feel. I am a weapon.

Aurox

“Why are you standing here looking at me?” Priestess asked him, staring at him with eyes of green ice.

“I await your command, Priestess,” he said automatically, wondering how it was possible to have displeased her. They had just returned to her lair at the top of the magnificent building called Mayo. Aurox had walked to the balcony and simply stood there, quietly, gazing at Priestess.

She blew out a long breath. “I have no command for you at this moment. And must you always stare at me?”

Aurox looked away, focusing on the lights of the city and how they glittered alluringly against the night sky.

“I await your command, Priestess,” he repeated.

“Oh, by all the gods! Who would have known the Vessel created for me would be as mindless as he is beautiful?”

Aurox felt the change in the atmosphere before Darkness materialized from smoke and shadow and night.

“Mindless, beautiful, and deadly…”

The voice rang in his head. The enormous white bull formed fully before him. His breath was fetid, yet sweet. His gaze was horrible and wonderful at the same time. He was mystery and magick and mayhem together.

Aurox dropped to his knees before the creature.

“Get off your knees. Get up and go back there…” She waved her hand in a dismissive gesture toward the shadows that edged the far recesses of the rooftop.

“No, I’d rather he stayed. I enjoy gazing on my creations.”

Aurox didn’t know what to say. This creature commanded his attention, but Priestess commanded his body.

“Creations?” Priestess put a special emphasis on the last part of the word as she moved languidly toward the massive bull. “Do you often make gifts like this to your followers?”

The bull’s laughter was terrible, but Aurox noticed Priestess didn’t flinch at all—that instead she seemed to be drawn closer and closer to the creature as he spoke.

“How interesting! You are actually questioning me. Are you jealous, my heartless one?”

Priestess stroked the bull’s horn. “Do I need to be?”

The bull nuzzled her. Where his muzzle touched Priestess the silk of her gown shriveled, exposing smooth, naked flesh underneath.

“Tell me, what do you believe is the purpose of my gift to you?” The bull answered Priestess’s question with one of his own.

Priestess blinked and shook her head, as if she was confused. Then her gaze found Aurox, still on his knees. “My lord, his purpose is protection, and I am ready to do as you bid to thank you for him.”

“I will accept your lush offerings, but I must explain to you that Aurox is not simply a weapon of protection. Aurox has one purpose, and that is to create chaos.”

Priestess inhaled a deep, shocked breath. She blinked rapidly, and her gaze went from the bull to him, and then returned to the bull.

“Truly?” she asked in a soft, reverent voice. “Through this one creature I can command chaos?”

The books are not getting any better..
By Vampvixen
I'm going to agree with some other reviewers and sum up the way I feel about the book. It was disappointing. It was short and lacked a new story line and more resolutions of past dramas. For example, Neferet is still the bad guy, still doing whatever she wants, and even though Zoey is so powerful she still hasn't been able to do anything about it? How many more books are they going to continue battling the same people and the same problems. Let them win over Neferet and if you want to continue the series, create a new villain who provides different challenges. I feel like they are just extending the series to make more money out of each individual book, the last two books could have been one and it could have made more sense. Again, I know this is a YA book but the writing is terrible sometimes especially when they use made up words like "gihugic" every other sentence. The books seem to be regressing because the earlier ones were for YA but were mature and entertaining enough to be enjoyed by an older demographic as well. This one not so much. I'm with the viewer that says if the next book doesn't progress, I'm dropping this series.

Destined for a Long Drawn Out Death
By Kale
With new lows in discrimination tactless and untasteful language Destined tests the boundaries and beyond in terms of YA. The latest edition of HON perfectly demonstrates the frustrations of a great concept being smothered by an overly indulgent publishing contract, unnessarily complex mythologies, world building, and increasingly neglected characters. Yup. It's just as bad as it's predecessors.

Zoe&Co Inc. are back in yet another been-there-read-that installment of the House of Night. In this episode Scooby Doo and Crew are trying to expose Neferet to the council (yet again) and find out what really happened on the night of Z's mom's murder.

Surprisingly Destined had an individual story arc. Something that has eluded past installments for quite a few books. Unfortunately good bones aside, Destined is written in the prose of the truly awful. I understand that Zoe and company are supposed to be typical trendy teenagers with relevant age appropriate voices, but the slang only manages to come across immature and ignorant instead of current. I get that the authors are trying to create irony with characters like Kramisha but it just doesn't work and becomes demeaning. The real irony is how an english teacher and an accomplished poet managed to compose the most inelegant, inarticulate, uneducated sounding young people ever immortalized in a published work. Along with bad dialogue the Cast's somehow consistently manages to turn what should be a shared reader/character experience of the emotional upheaval and devastation that occurs after death, into a load of corn and camp. I wish they would stop trying to mix grieving with pop references, not only does it diminish the impact of the situation, but it makes the whole passage awkward to read. The authors were dropping so many brand names that I felt like the book was sponsored by pop culture and local businesses and I was expecting ads to show up between the pages or a commercial to pop up in the middle of my audiobook.

I started getting the audiobook version a few books back because i just couldn't get through the hardcopy but the language has gotten so bad I'm not sure even that will suffice the next go around. The narration is ok but the horribly stereotypical cliches are infinitely pronounced.

In other bad news, Destined marks Zoey's return to boyfriend indecision. We are once again subjected to the whims of too many would be suitors. Just when you think the field has been narrowed down, someone's reincarnated, or thrown back into the mix due to some alliance or circumstance. And then we are led to dislike Z's current boy toy (again) in a story line that has no other purpose but to add more fluff now and maybe an out later.

While I applaud the author's attempt at going green, I would prefer they recycle materials rather than plots. I feel no satisfaction, only dizziness from circling the same themes of give salvation a chance & encroaching darkness this way comes, but it's only temporary because Zoe&Co. still don't trust Erik, Stark, or Raphiam. The whipping boy club and their vows to the goddess don't seem to mean anything since they're the one's the authors' choose to be vulnerable all the time. The main lesson is nothing but a contradiction. I can understand throwing some devolving into the mix but when it's every character in a similar position the device just gets tired and no one seems to grow or learn from past mistakes. Of course it's not like they have very many role models. With the addition of Lenobia's filler side lines they're venturing more and more adult or becoming less and less interested in YA. I think they should just age up the characters already. There's no order or structure for these teens they live more like off-campus college students than high school boarders.

There was one bright and shining beacon of hope, fresh meat aka a new fledgling. I actually found myself interested. I mean really, really interested in the story since the third book and wanting to invest into this character and her thread. It reminded me why i got so caught up in this series way back before the monstrosity HON has become. I think the authors should make like Mead, end this already, and start fresh. Mead was smart and kept some of the characters we know and love but didn't overkill VA. They need new characters and a new locale. Things that have already been established within the series, so it's all already there. The duo of Cast may have made this kind of transition difficult for themselves though. They have too many new and existing storylines in this book, no doubt to fill their contract quota. So it would be hard to close this wild runaway beast out. The mythology is too diverse and at the same time really specific to the local native american culture, this can help or hinder a spin off series, set at say the Chicago HON. On the one hand they can tailor the ideas to a new heroine on the other there are no rules or boundaries for their belief system which adds to the chaotic jumble already in need of taming. Also they might have made Zoey too special, too powerful, this leaves no room to grow or expand a new lead heroine for a spin off. Where can they really go with it when Z is supposed to be Nix incarnate. But I think these problems could be ironed out, some of the characters salvaged, to remake this series into something good again. Too bad no one listens to me.

I wish Cast&Cast JR would make a decision and stick with it, pick a path and stay the course. It's no wonder HON has become so stagnant we've been on the same page for the past three books, recycling the same themes with different characters. Funny how Lenobia states in this very book, her like of change, yet we still can't seem to get any.

Amazon.com Review

Travel across the country with Laurie Keller's wacky, clever cartoon drawings. Keller brings each state to life and gives them all unique personalities. Take a look at the comic adventures of Vermont as he tries to learn the state abbreviations.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Keller is once again guilty of transporting laughter across state lines in this follow-up to her hit The Scrambled States of America. Who knew that the 50 states were such a bunch of hams? She shows readers the backstage histrionics: California demands to talk to his agent when Georgia gets a bad case of stage fright, and Hawaii doesn't get the answer she seeks when she asks Kansas: Does this grass skirt make my butte look big? But the show must go on—and it does with every possible kind of act, from Minnesota the Magician (who seems to saw South Dakota in half) to the State Impersonators (Tennessee and Wyoming form Oklahoma and then ask, What's up with this handle, anyway? I mean, what am I—a state or a frying pan?). Some fans of the first book may argue that this one isn't as geographically clever—and they could be right. But the snappy dialogue flows effortlessly, the personalities are as winning as ever, and the pictures' energy never flags. It's e pluribus boffo! Ages 4–9. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4—New York wakes up in the middle of the night and shouts, "Hey, everyone—let's have a talent show!" The other states jump right in to prepare and perform their acts. Illustrations and layouts are similar to those in The Scrambled States of America Holt, 1998), with cartoon characters shaped like state maps dancing and prancing on stick legs and wisecracking all over the pages. There's plenty to giggle at: Texas trying to skate under Missouri's Gateway Arch, Pennsylvania playing a "peppy tune" on the Liberty Bell, and California checking in with his agent. Because there are 50 characters, the action can become confusing. It's easy enough to figure out that the "New States on the Block" boy band is made up of states that begin with the word "new," but not as clear why North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, Virginia, West Virginia, and Louisiana are members of the Montanettes, a singing group with Vegas-style feathers. There are references to the previous book, so it's helpful to remember that Mississippi and Nevada have fallen in love. Where it is popular, this one will also have fans. It is clever, lightly educational, and hip, but with a slightly weaker premise, it is just a bit more…scrambled.—Ellen Heath, Easton Area Public Library, Easton, PA

another visit with some of our favorite characters
By Tallulah
Laurie Keller is a genius.
It is not always evident to parents how funny her books will be for kids but my son goes back to them over and over. We've been reading them since about the age of 4 but he really got into them after we saw The Scrambled States of America on DVD. The characters came alive and it changed the book for him until he got old enough to work through it on his own.
The characters are endearing. My son is now 8 and he completely cracks up because he remembers what they did in the last book and how it ties in to the Talent Show book. He loves all the silly speech bubbles scattered throughout. Honestly, he laughs out loud when reading Laurie Keller books.
We also have Do Unto Otters, Open Wide School Tooth Inside, and Arnie the Doughnut which are hits as well. (The Tooth book you can actually use as a diary of when your kid loses their teeth...it's not meant for that but there is a diagram of all the teeth inside the front cover and we just wrote dates next to each tooth.)

WE LOVE THIS BOOK!
By Despina Manatos
My kids Andy (6) and Katherine (4) absolutely love this book and all of Laurie Keller's books...especially Scrambled States of America and Open Wide! They both have learned all the states and think this book is so funny. There is also a card game that goes along with the book that we play several times a day. They know which states border Canada and Mexico, which states touch the Atlantic Ocean and which touch the Pacific, and they even know how many states border Kansas, Tennessee, Utah, etc. What a wonderful way for kids this young to learn about the country! I think these books and card game make a GREAT educational birthday gift!

I love Laurie Keller
By Kalistah
I purchased Scrambled States of America: Talent Show for my two year old son. I love Laurie Keller, and had previously read Do Unto Otters.

Scrambled States has a brief list of State facts on the inside covers, and I like to use that and the map to help teach my son about the states. Cartoonizing each state into a character makes each state memorable and my son relates to them. He easily identifies Michigan, Oregon, and more thanks to this book. This is a great start for a toddler.

The book is about the different talents some states choose to showcase in a wacky talent show adventure. There is a lot of humor. My son giggles everytime we read it.

This book is a lot of fun to read and it is a great learning tool, both early on and will be over the next few years.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Four Washington, DC, high school students explore the world of politics, friendship, love, and betrayal in this teenage drama. Taylor has died in a car crash, and Jackie, Lettie, and Laura Beth are left to pick up the pieces. Whitney, a "Californian hippie type," comes into town and is searching for information for her mother's gossip column. Jackie (Virgin Queen Bee), the main character, starts off as compassionate and stuck in a dull relationship while trying to cope with the loss of her best friend. Her mother is the president's Chief of Staff, and Jackie is dating the president's son. Lettie (Token Charity Case) is the daughter of the chauffeur of the Paraguayan ambassador to the United States. Laura Beth's (Southern Belle Wannabe) mother is a lush and has myriad political contacts. When Whitney is invited to join their clique, trouble is inevitable. The political climate is well captured, but the consistent use of name brands can be distracting. Readers will enjoy the multiple points of view and story line, but will have trouble sympathizing with the characters as they are not very likable. Reluctant readers will lose interest in the eye-rolling dialogue and predictable twists. Plot holes linger throughout, leaving frustrating questions. The abrupt ending clearly sets up the sequel.-Krista Welz, North Bergen Public Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. "The writing is well-done and the alternating perspectives keep the story moving and intrigue going."―Children's Literature

About the Author

ELLA MONROE is the pseudonym for the Washington, DC based, debut writing duo Marilyn Rauber and Amy Reingold. Maz Rauber is a former reporter who covered national politics―and all its scandals―for the New York Post. The Australian-born writer lives in the DC area with her husband and, on occasion, their two college-aged children. Amy Reingold is a writer, a textile artist, and a classically-trained Cordon Bleu chef. Raised in small-town Illinois, she has lived in London and Hong Kong. But her favorite by far is the nation's capital, where she and her husband have raised two daughters and assorted pets.

For fans of Gossip Girl and politics
By Liviania
Ella Monroe is the pseudonym of Marilyn Rauber and Amy Reingold, a reporter and a writer making their YA debut. They've drawn on their own history living in Washington, D.C. to write a series in the vein of Gossip Girl and the A-list with a political twist. You know this kind of novel - lots of narrators, lots of brand names, lots of juicy scandals, and lots of plot twists. It's pure popcorn.

I went back and forth on whether I like the characters or not. There's lots of backstabbing and frenemy action, which doesn't make them the easiest characters to like. While there are several Capital Girls, the main narrator of CAPITAL GIRLS is Jackie Whitman. Jackie just lost her best friend in a tragic car wreck and has been fighting with her boyfriend Andrew Pierce - the President's son. Meanwhile, her mother is forcing her to cozy up to a gossip columnist's daughter and she's being seduced by an older lawyer. I felt like Jackie had her heart in the right place, but she's very tempted by the easy way out.

Less present in the novel were Lettie Velasquez, a Paraguayan girl in the US on an embassy sponsorship, and Laura Beth Ballou, the only Republican in the core group. I liked Lettie, who is trying her best to get ahead and go to a good school so that she can go back and help her country. Laura Beth seemed a little too naive and easily misled for someone raised in a political atmosphere. Not mentioned at all on the back is Whitney Remick, a California transplant who just wants to go back home. She's the most obviously villainous of the group, but it's a touch hard to delight in her machinations when she just wants her mother's love.

Many plots are introduced in CAPITAL GIRLS, although only a couple are resolved within its pages. The most compelling is the death of Taylor Cane, the one all the Capital Girls considered their best friend. Andrew was in the car with her, but he's remained completely silent about that night. Throughout the book Taylor remains a forceful presence in her surviving friends' lives, and each of them muse on the mysterious crash at times.

If you like Gossip Girl, the A-list, The Elite, Insider Girl, The Clique - any of that kind of series - you'll probably like CAPITAL GIRLS too. If you don't, then you'll probably want to avoid this one. (Quick note for parental types: there is underage drinking, drugging, and sexing. Obvs.) There's discussion of immigration debate and a female president to class up the joint, but it's still a book that exists more to be juicy than good literature. I'm not sure if it qualifies as juicy yet, but I'm willing to read SECRETS AND LIES, coming November 13th, to see what happens next.

Engaging, but tawdry!
By Avid Reader
If you're a fan of the Gossip Girls books, you'll probably like this book. If you're a fan of the Gossip Girls *show*, you'll definitely like this book.

The book is formulaic in its plot and its design, but the formula works. Several friends (a clique of popular girls), all with different personalities, go through life in the wake of their best friend's death in a car accident. They're joined by a new girl from California, whose mother is a gossip columnist (and the new girl is trolling for information amongst the girls, one of whom is dating the President's son). Of course, the requisite makeup, fashion names, and car references all make an appearance. The book, like others of its ilk, is more flash than substance.

While the book is engaging, be warned that these girl are not demure. When they like someone, they sleep with them. I didn't take issue with that, but one particular subplot involved one of the high school girls getting involved with a lawyer/congressional staffer - I couldn't buy that.

Do be aware that most of what this particular book does is to set the series of for its inevitable sequels.

A wonderfully thrilling teen novel
By kelfuller77
Capital Girls reads like a Washington DC version of a Gossip Girls novel and I loved every minute of it. Full of gossip, scandal and lots of drama, Capital Girls is a deliciously addicting novel. The characters are hard to like, but they were fun to read about. This book could be a great start a new series? I can easily see it taking off in lots of directions!

Sleep No More: An Eve Duncan Novel, by Iris Johansen

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen comes a new thriller that will have Eve Duncan questioning everything she thought she knew about her family and her past

One woman held captive for decades…

Another one freed by the truth…

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan knows what it's like to be haunted by the past. For years after her daughter Bonnie was stolen from her, she fought for closure. But now as she's striving to begin anew, she can't shake the feeling that something terrible is about to happen--or maybe already has. When her mother, Sandra, asks for help in finding a missing friend named Beth Avery, Eve is sure that she's hiding something. It's odd that Sandra would get involved at all, and the fact that she adamantly refuses to go to the police for help reinforces Eve's suspicions that something is very wrong.

Eve learns that Beth has been locked away in a mental hospital for years, which makes it even harder to understand how she could have disappeared. As Sandra reluctantly reveals small pieces of the truth about Beth's identity, Eve is shocked to discover that their lives are strangely entwined, and Beth's disappearance now puts them all in grave danger.

Desperate, Eve enlists a secret weapon to pick up Beth's trail: rogue profiler, Kendra Michaels. With an uncanny ability to detect clues and solve puzzles, Kendra begins to uncover the bizarre circumstances of Beth's escape from what should have been the safety of her hospital room. Beth is on the run, and as her mind clears--detoxing from the drugs that have held her prisoner--she begins to see the threads of a twisted plot within the powerful Avery family, threatening to destroy Beth and anyone else who might jeopardize the high-stakes game that is already in play.

Iris Johansen has another winner!
By retired teacher
Iris Johansen is back with not only Eve Duncan and Joe Quinn, but also Dr. Kendra Michaels and Beth Avery. The book begins when Sandra, Eve's mother, confesses that she has a daughter whom she gave up for adoption. This half-sister of Eve's, Beth Avery, has gone missing from a mental hospital where she has been held prisoner since she was seventeen. This is vintage Johansen with secrets, suspense, evil, and non-stop action. I only wish that Dr. Kendra Michaels, Johansen's new protagonist introduced in CLOSE YOUR EYES, had been a bigger presence in this book. However, Beth Avery proves to be a strong, determined, independent woman, just like Eve and Kendra. I think that Johansen has a winning format in combining these three characters in future novels. I look forward to these!
