Excellent book to feed the creative spirit!
By A Customer
I am an intermediate knitter who has been stifling my own creativity by knitting from commercial patterns for years. I have no knitters in my family, and taught myself to knit from books and help from art teachers in junior high school. Maggie Righetti is the knitting grandmother I never had, and always wanted. She has a wonderful sense of humor and a no-nonsense attitude of playfulness that cuts through the mystery and fear associated with design. Her first chapters are about the psychological barriers that keep knitters from taking control of their own craft, and this good-natured lecture is truly inspiring. Then she talks about the design issues and challenges associated with designing for REAL bodies of all types. Her attitude toward the fact that many people are bigger than the commercial designers assume, and that proportions can differ from that standard, but can still be beautiful, is refreshing. It's even--dare I say it--feminist! Righetti tells us to choose yarn that inspires us, then knit swatches with a variety of stitches and patterns. The swatch is not just to check gauge, but to let the yarn "tell you what it wants to be." Some may find this silly, but it has helped me to let my creativity go, and I am now working with a beautiful, inspiring purple mohair that told me it wanted to be a short-sleeved evening sweater with simple lines. The yarn didn't want anything fancy to upstage it (as if that was possible). My only complaint with the book is that the practice sweaters given are not the most stylish, and as many design techniques are taught in the context of these sweaters, it can be difficult to find a technique you want to use if you don't go through each of the design projects in detail. I highly recommend this book, and plan to check out her other books.

An excellent book
By A Customer
When I first bought this book, my knitting experience was not matured enough to appreciate the depth of the information contained in this book. To be honest, I was even dissapointed since the style of sweaters shown was not stylish, the models wearing them were not stylish commercial models. The book is full of English text and has no eye-candy photos. So it had been sitting in my bookshelf for almost one year,I even thought about selling it.
One Saturday afternoon, out of boredom, I decided to pick it up to read, laying on the bed. I could not believe that I could not discover the wisdom that the authour generously shares with us. My knitting knowleadge by then has grown to understand the authour's intention. Most of us do not have perfect bodies so that we need skills to knit to fit better. The models shown are real people with real mesurements! The sweaters are simples ones knitters tend to come back after ellaborately ornamented commercial patterns, which are often too-stylish to wear everyday.
All these knitting skills for size-manipulation were right there in her book at my hand. I looked for those informaiton here and there scattered in many other books, but most of the time I could not find them in any where. For example, how to plan bust darts by short-rowing were something I always wanted to know.
Her charting system is good model to copy. Math for knitting is well explined. If you can draw it and can do the math part of it, you can knit it. The price is very generous for the wealth of information contained. Probably, no color photos, no expensive commercial models have contributed greatly to its price. I am grad she made the book easy access to many people.
I would reccomend this book to intermidiate to advanced knitters.

Not just for would-be designers!
By Amazon Customer
I checked this book out of the library since I am fascinated with the idea of designing my own sweaters. But this book offers much, much more. It teaches the basics of color, it tells what colors work for you and why. Then there is a section on figure types. What sweater designs flatter and which do not. And the chapter does not have just the usual hour glass, pear, top heavy distinctions, there's the rectangle, the triangle, the oval, the tiffany diamond.... It is almost garanteed the you will find your body type in the list.
The first part alone is worth the price of the book but there are many other lessons to offer. As mentioned before, most of the sweater projects are not very stylish (though I did like the sweater designed to use up left over yarn) but the lessons offered are sound.
As usual for Maggie Righetti's books, the writing style is chatty and fun filled with anecdotes and nuggets of wisdom that can only come from a veteran knitter.
My only real complaint about this book is that it often refers to information found in the author's previous book Knitting in Plain English. I suggest buying both books. (You'll want the other one anyway after reading this book.)
This book is a must for any knitter who wishes to design sweaters but it is also an excellant course in dressing well and in adjusting knitting patterns. Also, it is a good look at advanced knitting techniques. This book is hours worth of knitting lessons condensed in a convenient package. Worth every penny!

Review

“Wonderful. Anyone looking for the next big thing has come to the right place. Higgins has created a uniquely grim fantasy world that more than holds its own with Dickens or Peake. Her characters are brilliantly realized and the story grabs at the reader with hooked talons.” ―Eoin Colfer

“This polished debut from a British writer tantalizingly blends secrets and thick, evocative atmosphere . . . Higgins, framing her book as texts discovered in a hallowed wooden leg, expertly sustains the audience's curiosity, revealing just enough information to keep readers riveted. And for all the grisly details, the novel gets at important themes about self-determination and trust. Original and engrossing.” ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“The story's vaguely Dickensian atmosphere is exquisite . . . A tantalizingly revelatory ending leaves at least one thread dangling for future volumes (which are sure to evoke more picaresque oddities and nefarious tales), making this a smart, peculiarly thrilling book that is sure to appeal to readers ready to sidestep the goodygoody Harry Potters of adventure fiction.” ―Booklist, Starred Review

“Higgins's debut begins with a bang--on the streets of a London as dark as in any Dickens novel--and ends in a mysterious cave, with no let-up in pacing from start to finish . . . One of Higgins's great achievements is the way she manages to convey a degree of innocence in Ludlow despite his harsh life surviving the city streets. Redemption emerges as a strong theme in the book, as she reveals the complexities of human nature, and she leaves open several mysteries (including the history behind a wooden leg and Joe's prized pet frog). Readers can only hope for many more black books filled with secrets.” ―Shelf Awareness

“Pre-teens who enjoy historically based fantasy . . . will find The Black Book of Secrets thoroughly rewarding.” ―The Washington Post

“. . . will keep readers on the edge of their seats.” ―Scripps Howard News Service

“There can be few more nightmarish openings than that of The Black Book of Secrets . . . A beguiling mix of gothic fairy tale and Dalhesque macabre for 9-13-year-olds.” ―The Telegraph (UK)

“Higgins creates a fascinating novel peopled with colorful characters and imbued with clever plot twists . . . the novel's climax is both excellent and surprising.” ―Voice of Youth Advocates

“Higgins's fine writing and wry tale will charm readers who are ready for the unusual . . . like the film Chocolat . . . a stranger enters a town and changes the lives there forever, all from the confines of a small shop, this time a pawnbroker's place.” ―KLIATT

“The resolution, as tidy a piece of plotting as can be imagined, not only collects all the plot threads but leads to the deeper revelation of who Joe is and why he plies such a curious trade. Strongly seasoned with details of nineteenth-century oddities, the story abounds with puzzles, quirks, and enticing disclosures.” ―The Horn Book

“While Ludlow & Co. do live in an alternate reality, there are many details about life in the late 1800s that readers of historical fiction will enjoy--especially those who like reading about the more gruesome, less well-known details, like stealing and selling teeth, grave robbers, body snatchers and Sweeney Todd.” ―Bookshelves of Doom

“I thought this book was outstanding. It's a horror book with lots of mystery. I would give it four stars.” ―Jennifer Hopkins, age 11, in The Washington Times

Marvelous Gothic Horror for Children and Adults
By Thom Denick
Why no one knows about this book yet is a mystery to me. I found it in a French bookstore, in the English section, in Quebec City. This is an absolutely wonderful first book filled with true horror and wonders for all ages.

I don't know why the book's publisher has chosen to categorize this book only for 9-12 year olds, as it reads quite fine to me at 29. I bought it without noticing it was a children's book, and got a good way in before I even realized that was the intention.

The story starts out with an anguishing bit of horror, and then quickly moves through the English countryside as we follow our city-boy protaganist to where he lands in Parvus Pravil, where he meets and apprentices with the most extraordinary pawnbroker.

The pawnbroker specializes in people's secrets, and at midnight invites townfolk to his shop where they tell them his worst secrets and he pays them for their safe keeping.

I think fans of Harry Potter, The Sandman, and Lemony Snicket, all will truly enjoy this novel.

Also, I have no idea what this other review is talking about as this story is very clearly about a little boy, who in no way discovers a book of secrets, but instead, helps write one.

Tantalizing and evocative
By Pop Bop
Look at these reviews - unique, different, gothic, interesting, delicious, macabre, vivid, thrilling. How is that for making an impression on readers?

I don't know why the Higgins books have not made it into the mainstream, or why they get so little buzz, but I congratulate you on having found this site, and encourage you to give this book a try. It is a great introduction to quality writing.

Who has a secret to sell?
By kbaccellia
Everyone has secrets. Some small, others big. Imagine if you could sell your worse secret and have someone else deal with it. Such is the premise of the book, THE BLACK BOOK OF SECRETS.

Ludlow Fitch barely escapes a terrible fate in the City. Latching onto a carriage he finds himself in a village and a new twist of fate. A mysterious pawnbroker, Joe Zabbidon, offers him employment to write down the villagers deepest, darkest secrets in the Black Book of Secrets.

At first everything seems like a dream come true-Ludlow has a warm bed, employment, and respect. This was something that alluded him as a pickpocket back in the City.

But not all villagers are happy with the pawnbroker. Jeremiah Ratchet owns most of the village. He watches as those who used to be in his debt, no longer fear him.

What secrets are in the book? Jeremiah hatches a plot to gain assess to the book and hopefully get the villagers back into his debt.

All the while Ludlow has his own secret, one that gives him nightmares every night. Though he is thankful to Joe for what he's done, he can't help but wonder about the pawnbroker. Is he the devil like some whisper?

I LOVED this book! From the very first page I was transported to this fantasy world. Who wouldn't want to sell their darkest secrets? This is a fast-paced read that will keep you glued to each villager's secret. Some of the secrets are pretty graphic but I couldn't help myself. I wanted to read more!

The details of the time period were realistic. I admit, I squimmed when I read about Barton Gumbroot's special talent of pulling teeth to sell to the wealthy.

I recommend this book to those who love reading historical fantasies.

The much awaited latest installment in this New York Times bestselling series brings Marcus Didius Falco back to the city of Rome and its deadly, convoluted intrigues

In the high summer of A.D. 77, Roman informer Marcus Didius Falco is beset by personal problems. Newly bereaved and facing unexpected upheavals in his life, it is a relief for him to consider someone else's misfortunes. A middle-aged couple who supplied statues to his father, Geminus, have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. They had an old feud with a bunch of notorious freedmen, the Claudii, who live rough in the pestilential Pontine Marshes, terrorizing the neighborhood.

When a mutilated corpse turns up near Rome, Falco and his vigiles friend Petronius investigate, even though it means traveling in the dread marshes. But just as they are making progress, the Chief Spy, Anacrites, snatches their case away from them. As his rivalry with Falco escalates, he makes false overtures of friendship, but fails to cover up the fact that the violent Claudii have acquired corrupt protection at the highest level. Making further enquiries after they have been warned off can only be dangerous―but when did that stop Falco and Petronius?

Egged on by the slippery bureaucrats who hate Anacrites, the dogged friends dig deeper while a psychotic killer keeps taking more victims, and the shocking truth creeps closer and closer to home.

After Alexandria, the first book in this long-running series to hit the New York Times Bestseller list, Lindsey Davis brings her beloved characters and series back to Rome in a book that brings together a number of long-running plot threads to surprising and compelling conclusions.

From Publishers Weekly
Davis immediately engages the reader's sympathies in her fine 20th ancient Roman historical featuring informer Marcus Didius Falco (after 2009's Alexandria) with her moving depiction of the death of Falco's newborn son. When Falco seeks out his father to share the horrible news, he's stunned to learn that "Pa" has also died. While Falco is coming to terms with the double tragedy, an associate asks him to help look into the murder of Julius Modestus, an art dealer whose mutilated body was dumped in a mausoleum. Falco learns that Modestus and his wife vanished after making complaints about the difficult Claudii, freedmen who originally came from the imperial family, with whom the couple had a border dispute in the Pontine Marshes. With its tricky, suspenseful plot, this entry deserves to join its immediate predecessor on bestseller lists, though some modern-sounding prose ("Have they lawyered up?" one character asks) won't please every historical fan.

From Booklist
It’s the summer of AD 77, and Roman “informer” (read PI) Marcus Didius Falco is going through a rough time. Shortly after the death of his infant son, he receives news that his father has died. Alas, crime waits for no man, and Falco must grapple with his grief as he investigates the suspicious disappearance of a middle-age couple who supplied statues to his father. (It seems they got on the bad side of the Claudii, a flock of sinister freedmen.) At the same time, the discovery of a mutilated corpse at a graveyard prompts rumors of a serial killer. Marcus’ longtime friend and colleague Petronius helps him gather clues on the murder case, but it’s not long before Anacrites, Rome’s loathsome chief spy, steals it out from under them. On the domestic front, Falco is troubled by the lingering malaise of his notoriously spirited wife, Helena. Nemesis is a fitting title for this solid twentieth entry in British historian Davis’ standout series, in which Falco encounters a collection of cold-blooded and bloody annoying foes. --Allison Block

Falco 20: Murder in the Marshes
By Marshall Lord
Number twenty in this series of excellent detective stories set in Vespasian's Roman Empire and featuring the informer Marcus Didius Falco begins with a terrible family tragedy for Falco.

Nemesis was the Roman Goddess of retributive justice: one of the characters in this story says that "when a man receives more from Fortune than he should, Nemesis will come along and right the balance."

The book contains Lindsey Davis's usual mix of ironic humour about human relationships, nuggets of information about the society and politics of first century Rome, and an intriguing detective story. But although the style and content is fairly similar to the first nineteen books in the series, the tone of this latest volume is much darker.

The full Falco series, in chronological order, consists at the moment of:

1) The Silver Pigs
2) Shadows in Bronze
3) Venus in Copper
4) The Iron Hand of Mars
5) Poseidon's Gold
6) Last Act in Palmyra
7) Time to Depart
8) A Dying Light in Corduba
9) Three Hands in the Fountain
10) Two for the Lions
11) One Virgin Too Many
12) Ode to a Banker
13) A Body in the Bath house
14) The Jupiter Myth
15) The Accusers
16) Scandal taks a Holiday
17) See Delphi and Die
18) Saturnalia
19) Alexandria
20) Nemesis

This book is set in Summer AD77, during the period when the Flavian dynasty, e.g. the Emperor Vespasian and his sons Titus and Domitian, were building the huge stadium known to historians as the Flavian Amphitheatre and to most of the rest of us as the Coliseum.

Picking up the pieces after the double tragedy which strikes Falco on the first day of the story, he learns that his father Geminus had won a contract from the Flavians to provide a large number of statues for the alcoves in the Coliseum. One supplier, Modestus, from whom Geminus had bought some of these statues cannot be paid because he, his wife, and the slaves in his household have all disappeared. So Falco travels to Modestus's home near Antium to investigate.

He learns Modestus had last been seen when heading into the Pontine Marshes to talk to a notorious family called the Claudii about a boundary dispute. And his wife had last been seen when she went to find why Modestus had not returned. Local people, when persuaded with difficulty to talk, are convinced that the Claudii had murdered Modestus, his wife, and many other people, but that nothing will be done because the Claudii had friends at the imperial court.

Falco and his friend Petro start to investigate, and it soon becomes clear that there is indeed a serial killer at work in the Pontine Marshes. Is it the Claudii? If so, is someone at the Imperial court protecting them, and why? Will Falco and Petro have to take the law into their own hands - or could this case be their own nemesis?

I agree with previous reviewer about this story being the darkest in the series. This is not because the witty banter, cynical humour or any of the other normal elements are missing: they are all still there and one or two of the jokes are quite funny. Nor is this story darker than the previous ones just because innocent people get murdered, although they do: that happened in previous books. A delightful girl in her early teens was murdered in the first few pages of the first Falco book, for instance.

Part of the reason that this book comes over darker in tone is that it dwells a bit more than usual on the consequences of evil behaviour for the victims. One passage in the book reminded me in the most depressing way of real-life accounts of violence against women, such as the columns police doctor Theodore Dalrymple used to write in the Spectator magazine, describing conversations with women who will neither leave or bring charges against the abusive partners who keep putting them in hospital.

But the main reason this story is so dark lies the impact of the evil they are trying to eradicate on Falco and Petro themselves.

One bit of series trivia: most of the novels in this series read as if they were being told in a chatty style shortly after the events described. However, "Nemesis" is the second Falco book (the other being "Ode to a Banker") which contains oblique references to events after the conclusion of the book. "Ode to a Banker" explicitly states that the story of the book is being told twenty years later in about 94AD and one or two references in "Nemesis" appear to hint that this book too is being narrated at about that time.

I initially tried this series because I had enjoyed the "Cadfael" mediaeval detective stories by Ellis Peters. Where Cadfael is excellent, Falco is brilliant. Ellis Peters herself (or to use her real name, Edith Pargeter) said of the early books of the series, 'Lindsey Davis continues her exploration of Vespasian's Rome and Marcus Didius Falco's Italy with the same wit and gusto that made "The Silver Pigs" such a dazzling debut and her rueful, self-deprecating hero so irresistibly likeable.'

Funny, exciting, and based on a painstaking effort to re-create the world of the early Roman empire between 70 and 77 AD.

It isn't absolutely essential to read these stories in sequence, as the mysteries Falco is trying to solve are all self-contained stories and each book can stand on its own. Having said that, there is some ongoing development of characters and relationships and I think reading them in the right order does improve the experience.

Family woes
By E. A Solinas
Family has always been a big problem in Lindsay Davis' books -- family will get you into trouble, but you help them even if they make your skin crawl. And in Davis' twentieth ancient Roman murder-mystery, family trouble catapults our favorite Roman informer into even more trouble in the less pleasant, healthy parts of Rome -- and the big problem is the sudden "dark" actions he takes. See below for spoileriffic details.

Death has visited Falco's family: his son dies just after birth, and on the same day he learns that his father has just died. Unsurprisingly, his dad left Falco the bulk of his considerable estate and his sleazy business -- and an ex-lover, Thalia, who claims to be pregnant with his baby (which, if it's male, will halve his inheritance). To make matters worse, Helena's brother returns home, newly married to a grasping Athenian woman.

It makes most families look positively peaceful, doesn't it? And that's before the MURDERS start.

While dealing with dear dad's estate, Falco discovers that the Pontine Marshes are not just yucky, but deadly -- citizens are vanishing and being found dead in Rome. Apparently it's connected to the Claudii, a strange family said to have imperial protection. As more bodies pop up in Rome, Falco and Petronius must unearth a nasty collection of facts -- which may be connected to someone they know.

Lindsey Davis has a rare writing knack -- she can write historical mysteries without spending the whole book constantly going, "Look at all my cool research! Check out all the uninteresting details I dug up to give the book an authentic feel!" as many such writers do. It's full of the flavour of ancient Rome -- the flies, the squalor, the sweat, and the faint scent of corruption when a great civilization goes downhill.

And as you'd expect from a book named after the goddess of divine retribution, there's a dark edge to this story -- sudden deaths, inheritance, plague-swamps and a mysterious half-hidden family. While Davis still weaves in some funny moments ("If this is the same ox, he's a sex maniac. I'm not driving him!"), "Nemesis" is undoubtedly a darker, grimmer story than the ones before it.

The big problem is the characterization. For the first two-thirds of the book, Davis smoothly explores Falco and Helena's shared grief, gentle humor and their fierce mutual love for their family -- especially since Anacrites is sniffing around Albia, and Albia is having a meltdown because of her crush getting married.

Then, without warning, Falco tortures a man, and it puts a nasty strain on his marriage. It feels like Davis made a stab at making things "darker" -- but it doesn't feel consistent for a man who always had such principles, and he doesn't seem in any way bothered by it. Fortunately, that part ends soon and everything shifts back to normal.

Winged "Nemesis" attacks the people around Falco in Lindsey Davis' twentieth novel. It's well-written, nicely dark and witty, but the "torture" part temporarily derails both Falco and the story.

terrific Ancient Rome whodunit
By A Customer
In AD 77 on a hot summer day in Rome, informer Marcus Didius Falco has twin tragedies strike him almost simultaneously. His newborn son dies just hours after being born and when he took his baby to be buried on his father's property, he learns his dad died also. As the heir Marcus must make quick business decisions. Marcus has a contract to deliver over a hundred statues to the amphitheater, but when he arrives to pay his father's supplier for them and pick them up, Julius Modestus and his wife Livia Primilla are nowhere to be found.

The nephew of the missing couple takes remittance for the statues. He also informs Marcus that his Uncle Julius complained about Nobilis of the Claudii family who reside in the desolate Pontine Marshes. Marcus soon learns that the mutilated body of Modesto has been found. Falco and his friend vigiles Petronius investigate. They visit the Pontine Marshes and see how trashy the Claudii live and how everyone in a miles wide radius fears them. As they make progress on the case, their enemy Chief Spy Anacrites takes over the inquiry. Falco realizes someone high up in the government is protecting the Claudii so he and his partner continue their probe.

Falco is home after a best selling trip to Alexandria; once again Lindsey Davis brings to life Rome mostly through the eyes of the informer. As a sort of anti-hero, Falco gets his hands dirty while seeking justice for his late father's deceased supplier though the inquiry enables him to put his grief as the sandwich generation mourning two deaths on hold. The rest of the cast is strong especially the protagonist's partner, the first century bureaucrat Anacrites and the squalid living Claudii who ironically have high level protection. This is a terrific Ancient Rome whodunit with surprising twists and Falco running from his grief.

Eve is brilliant, and driven, and tormented--because her own daughter, Bonnie, was taken from her years ago. And Eve has never discovered what happened to her. But now a name from the past resurfaces, thanks to CIA agent Catherine Ling who knows all too well what it’s like to lose a child.

After teaming up with Agent Ling to find her missing son, Eve and Catherine share a bond forged by their mutual pain. Now, Catherine challenges Eve with a name: John Gallo. A man from Eve’s past. A man, seemingly raised from the dead, whose whereabouts are unknown. Could Gallo be the missing piece to the puzzle that has haunted Eve for years? Why was he in Atlanta just before Bonnie’s disappearance? With a brilliant narrative that goes back to Eve Duncan’s early life, exploring her history and motivations like no other novel before, Eve reveals long-guarded secrets and is guaranteed to leave Johansen fans panting for more—soon to come in Quinn (October 2011).

From Publishers Weekly
In Johansen's gripping 11th Eve Duncan novel (after Chasing the Night), the first of a trilogy, the forensic sculptor zeros in on the kidnapper and serial killer who years earlier abducted and murdered her seven-year-old daughter, Bonnie. Eve's obsession with the case draws in her good friend, CIA agent Catherine Ling, as well as her lover and would-be protector, police detective Joe Quinn. In spite of their problematic relationships due to Eve's protracted and intense search, Ling and Quinn work together to call in favors and pursue every possible lead. Their joint efforts uncover a cadre of sharply drawn malefactors who may be deeply involved, notably emotionally unstable John Gallo, Eve's former lover and Bonnie's father, who spent six years as a prisoner in North Korea. The explosive finale set in the Wisconsin woods leads to an emotional cliffhanger, as Johansen deftly baits the hook for the next volume. 400,000 first printing. (Apr.)

From Booklist
After searching for years over the course of Johansens popular, long-running series, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan is finally close to solving the mystery of daughter Bonnies murder. With the help of her CIA friend Catherine Ling, Eve narrows the field of suspects down to either Paul Black or John Gallo, both of whom work for a corrupt military intelligence officer. Paul has a history of killing children, and John is mentally unstable after a stint in a North Korean prison. The specter of Gallo forces Eve to relive her tumultuous past, growing up in the projects of Atlanta, intent on staying out of trouble until she meets John. He was about to join the army to become a Ranger, but first they had a brief yet highly charged affair, which left Eve pregnant with Bonnie. Now nothing will stop Eve from learning the truth about her daughters fate as Johansen launches a trilogy that takes the reader on an action-packed journey filled with killers and heroes, leaving readers on tenterhooks for Quinn (July 2011) and Bonnie (October 2011). HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: With a seven-figure marketing campaign and 400,000-copy print runs for each title, Johansens next three titles will be hot. --Patty Engelmann

Advance Warning ... Cliffhanger Ending ...
By Alex S
For all of us who have been following the saga of Eve Duncan, Iris Johansen has developed a trilogy of "closers" ... letting us have closure with Eve and Joe concerning what happened with her daughter Bonnie.

In this first novel, Eve (the next two are Quinn and Bonnie), we are taken back to the very beginning, before Bonnie was even born, when we meet Gallo, about to join the army, and follow his intense relationship with Eve ... and the conception of Bonnie.

When Eve is confronted with the possibility that it is Gallo, Bonnie's own father, who kidnapped and killed Bonnie, she had to find out. The question throughout the novel is whether Gallo is being honest with Eve, or whether he is leading her into his own trap. And yet, those who know Eve will realize that she can't take the chance. If she can find out what happened to Bonnie, maybe she will finally have closure after so many years.

The question throughout the book is the same as in all Eve Duncan novels - who killed Bonnie - in this novel we look at Gallo; Black, a psychopathic pedophile killer who is an assassin for the CIA; and Queen, a rogue CIA agent who controls both of them.

As I said in the title, it ends with a cliff-hanger, leaving the door open for the next novel ... with someone important dead, someone else critically injured, someone missing ... and questions left unanswered.

Iris Johansen has promised "everything will finally be answered" in this trilogy, but I do have one hope and a question of my own. Will Eve be content with the answers if and when she finally holds Bonnie's bones in her hands and has a chance to bury them? Will she be able to bury the past? Will she have the chance to grow into someone else, someone "beyond Bonnie"?

Like all Eve Duncan fans, I am grateful that this series is coming to this explosive climax, and look forward to the final two novels.

*** Special Note *** If you have not yet read the last novel about Eve, Chasing the Night, you will want to read it before this particular novel, since it incorporates the same characters, and while the novel stands independently, you will enjoy it much more with the background information from Chasing the Night.

Summer People by Elin Hilderbrand

Every summer the Newton family retreats to their beloved home on Nantucket for three months of sunshine, cookouts, and bonfires on the beach. But this summer will not be like any other. When Arch Newton, a prominent New York attorney, dies in a plane crash on his way home from a business trip, his beautiful widow, Beth, can barely keep things together. Beth invites Marcus, the son of Arch's final and most challenging client, to spend the summer with her and her teenage twins, Winnie and Garrett, who have mixed reactions to sharing their special summer place with this stranger. Always a place of peace before, Nantucket becomes the scene of roiling emotions and turbulent passions as Marcus, Winnie, and Garrett learn about loss, first love, and betrayal. From Booklist
Manhattanite Beth Newton is taking her family to Nantucket for their typical island summer, except this year is anything but typical. Absent is Arch, Beth's husband and father to her twin son and daughter, Garrett and Winnie. Present (at Arch's invitation, before he died in a plane crash) is the black 17-year-old son of a woman Arch had been defending against the death penalty after she killed her sister-in-law and niece. The family intends to spend the summer resting and healing, but tensions quickly build over Garrett's resentment of Marcus' presence. Things heat up more when Beth finds that her first love, full-time Nantucket resident David, now separated from his wife, seems eager to rekindle old times. Meanwhile, the kids develop complicated relationships of their own: Garrett with David's older daughter, Winnie with Marcus. Hilderbrand's third Nantucket-set novel effectively juxtaposes the surface calm of the season with the turbulence of the characters' lives. More entertaining beach reading from the author of The Beach Club (2000) and Nantucket Nights (2002). Beth Leistensnider

Review

“Things get more twisted at every turn, with enough lies and betrayals to fuel a whole season of soap operas...readers will be hooked.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Hilderbrand's third Nantucket-set novel effectively juxtaposes the surface calm of the season with the turbulence of the characters' lives. More entertaining beach reading from the author of The Beach Club and Nantucket Nights.” ―Booklist

“Summer People is striking not only for the ingenuity of its riveting plot, but also for the acute sense of character and the finely tuned craftsmanship with which Elin Hilderbrand brings its every nuance to life.” ―Madison Smartt Bell, author of Charm City

“I find there is so much to admire in this book, from its crystalline prose to the deeply felt and finely rendered emotion of characters younger and older, male and female alike. By the end, the characters feel like good friends. Reading Summer People makes you feel like you've taken a long weekend in Nantucket. Summer People is simply a great read.” ―Kathleen Hughes, author of Dear Mrs. Lindbergh: A Novel

MY FAVORITE BOOK FOR THE "SUMMER OF 2003"
By TheReader23
Last summer, I read Nantucket Nights, also by Elin Hilderbrand, and it was my favorite book for the "Summer of 2002." When I heard that she had a new book coming out for this summer, I had hopes that it might be almost as good as last summer's favorite but had never anticipated that it would be even better. I can honestly say that I could not put this book down -- that's how good it was.
As proven in her previous books, Hilderbrand is a master at dealing with family dynamics. In the opening of this book, Beth Archer and her two teenage children are leaving their luxury Manhattan apartment and are heading to their Nantucket summer home. This will be the first time, however, that she is returning as a widow -- her husband recently died in a plane crash just months ago. Also accompanying her and her 17 year old twins is Marcus, another 17 year old from Queens whose mother has just been convicted of murder. The recently deceased Archer Newton was defending Marcus' mother at the time of his death and, before he died, he had extended the invitation to Marcus. Beth feels it's only right to honor this invitation if for no other reason than to fulfill her dead husband's wishes.
The next few months will see the twins exploring new relationships while Beth learns to deal with life without her partner. Hilderbrand is great at filling her books with hot summers spent on Nantucket island where past secrets abound waiting to be revealed. This book is no exception as the reader will find secrets hiding in every chapter. While this is an "excellent" beach read, I'd recommend it anytime of the year.
I'd also like to add that the covers of all of Hilderbrand's books are so appealing that I'm drawn to each and every one of them. So can you judge a book by its cover????? In Hilderbrand's case you can.

Sniper Elite: The World of a Top Special Forces Marksman, by Rob Maylor, Robert Macklin

A gritty, no-holds-barred behind-the-scenes memoir of life as one of the world's top snipers

In Sniper Elite, Rob Maylor takes readers inside the closed world of the elite Special Forces sniper, detailing Maylor's dedication to the dark art of sniping and touching on the history of the great snipers who came before him. As one of Australia's most highly trained and successful combat marksmen, he tells the story of his years on the front lines, from his early service with the Royal Marines in Northern Ireland, to action in Iraq and most recently in Afghanistan where he was involved in some of the heaviest fighting in the conflict. He also chronicles his near-death experience in a Blackhawk helicopter that crashed off Fiji, killing two of his friends, and how he would walk for hours, sometimes days, through hostile country until he found the right position. Then, when the moment was right, he aimed, and with absolute precision, put the bullet just where it was going to have the most effect.

Filled with dark humor and the almost religious sense of brotherhood within such an exclusive group of warriors, this is an explosive and revealing combat memoir―and an inside look at the shadowy world of the modern sniper.

SNIPER ELITE: AUSTRALIAN STYLE- BRUTAL TRAINING, HARROWING MISSIONS
By RBSProds
"...the Taliban leader had just said over the radio: 'Kill them, kill them all.'"- Chapter 16, "Ambush! The Battle of Khaz Oruzgan", Sniper Elite.

Five WHITE-KNUCKLED Stars! "Sniper Elite" is the true-life story of Rob Maylor, one of the world's expert snipers who qualified for the Royal Marines (comparable to Navy SEALs), the Royal Australian Regiment, and later qualified to enter the rarefied world of the sniper via the highly-regarded, ultra elite Australian Special Air Service Regiment. The story begins with a wounded Maylor and a fellow sniper under heavy Taliban fire in Afghanistan running for a US Army vehicle and with Maylor diving into a nearby shallow ditch. He was trapped by heavy enemy fire that concentrated on him: caught in a classic enemy ambush.... That scene pauses, and then Maylor's life story is told: born in New Zealand, his complicated family and educational issues, an impressive wild trip through Europe and North Africa as a youth, marriage, and then his qualifying for the Royal Marines. Literally, a person who felt he was "born to be a soldier", who escaped death under some mind-boggling circumstances.

As an American soldier, I find this is a fascinating story with much overlap with our forces via common terminology and joint US/NATO operations in the world's current wars and some unusual areas, such as the operations in Belfast, Northern Ireland and East Timor. Beyond this is the Douglas Wood hostage situation in Iraq and the harrowing Battle of Khaz Oruzgan in Afghanistan. Training, equipment, and tactics of the Marines and the SAS snipers is covered in great unclassified detail across a wide variety of environmental and war conditions, and military engagements. All delivered in fascinating, detailed prose. Caution: much wartime blood and gore ahead. "Dark Art", indeed! My Highest Recommendation. Five "PEPPER-POT" Stars! (352 pages with photographs. This review is based on a Kindle download in 'text-to-speech' mode.)

Alittle too slow
By Lonestar
As the title says this book was almost too slow for me it was good and informative into the nature of a british sas marksman but i felt it took way way too long to get to the actual part of him being a sniper. other than this it was a good read.

The Author Ruins A Good Story
By Amazon Customer
This book was an OK read. As stated in other reviews, it is slow to get to the sniping engagements. It should have been titled and focused more so on his experience in different military units than his sniping career. There are places it should have went into more depth such as his training, however it just makes simple statements and moves on as if passing SASR selection and training was not such a big deal. The classic military stories are good, but this book is terribly written. Whoever this Robert Macklin is that essentially put the words to paper dropped the ball on retelling a brave 'bloke's' fairly storied career. People are referred to in the novel by their initials making it hard to follow and keep track of people. I understand privacy and secrecy and all that, but at least make up a first name. It also gives away later drama by inserting information as soon as someone is introduced in the story such as "This became my good friend SJ (who would later die in a _________). This would give away some decent chapters later in the book.
It is refreshing to read about different units from different countries and their experiences, but I would recommend reading other books if you are looking for that sort of thing. Most regular infantry combat veterans have more engagements and stories than are written in this 'top tier soldiers' book. No disrespect to him or his career, but the book was poorly done and missed the mark ( get it, sniper humor).
