Rock Roadie: Backstage and Confidential with Hendrix, Elvis, The Animals, Tina Turner, and an All-Star Cast, by James

Rock Roadie takes you on an exclusive all-access tour of more than thirty years on the road with the biggest names in rock ’n’ roll.

As a roadie for some of the world's greatest music stars, James “Tappy” Wright has seen and done it all. He was there at the beginning when The Animals were formed and when they recorded their anthem, “The House of the Rising Sun.” He was there when an unknown guitarist called Jimi Hendrix played to a handful of listeners in a smoky New York club and the next day, recorded one of his biggest hits, “Hey Joe.” And as tour manager and often close confidante, Tappy has looked after superstar Tina Turner and her fiery husband, Ike, on tour, worked for Gene Vincent, helped to trap an egotistical Little Richard in an elevator, and hung up on Elvis for impersonating . . . Elvis.

Packed full of conspiracy theories, truths finally told, and previously unheard anecdotes, Rock Roadie is a gripping and hilarious read that blows open the world of rock ’n’ roll in the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, including an explosive revelation about the mysterious circumstances of Hendrix’s death.

A Must-Have Book For Hendrix Fans
By Albert Doyle
Rock Roadie is a must-have book for Hendrix fans because it covers a special insider's perspective of Hendrix that could only be gotten from a person as close to Hendrix's management as Tappy was. While this book is more the memoirs of a Rock Roadie through the various stages of his life and career, including Hendrix, the Hendrix parts are historic and could only have come from Tappy. 'Rock Roadie's' main claim to fame is Tappy's admission that Hendrix's manager Michael Jeffery confessed to murdering Jimi and is worth buying for that reason alone. A claim that is backed by the witnessing of the doctor who tried to save Jimi that morning.

The book covers an extremely interesting time in rock history with the Newcastle evolution of Eric Burdon and the Animals along with Tappy's tight involvement. While the book could have fleshed-out those memories and events in more detail and is too short because of it, what is there is very evocative of a nostalgic time in rock history and Tappy's immersion in it. Tappy rode the parade float to fame right along with the Animals and was their 6th member. Being just outside of the frame Tappy was able to relate the real intimate goings-on of the band as a live witness and mischievous participant. His viewpoint is priceless and exclusive even if limited by the passage of time and reliant on the strongest of Tappy's lasting memories.

Readers should be warned Tappy perhaps relishes his sexual accounts a little too proudly and describes them in somewhat pornographic detail. But intermixed with that are irreplaceable accounts of dealing with the emergent rock music industry at the time of the Beatles, and other experiences as a working member of rock's heyday, that provide rich memories of an important time. Never the less the book had me gut laughing at times and was written in a particularly Geordie bawdy style that gave it character. It reflects the same affable personality that allowed Tappy to exist as he did in the midst of rock.

Don't make the mistake of not taking Tappy seriously. Even if he was not a talented star on the stage and came from a humble Newcastle working class background he was there! His humble style and humor along with his practical helpfulness as a band manager and roadie allowed him to casually mingle amongst the main rock gentry of the day and access the halls of 60's rock management where he witnessed the things told of in the book. People make the mistake of thinking Tappy's unserious pursuits, humor, sex exploits, and demeanor detract from the serious things he writes of in the book. It's just the opposite and Tappy's unthreatening nature allowed him to witness things that would later prove important. He's exactly the type of carefree person who existed in just the right position of not being a compromised band member or manager who could tell what he knew.

The book explores The Animal's idiosyncrasies and internal conflicts giving you an intimate view of the band along with the wicked adolescent pranks they played on each other. Tappy then relates his managing experiences with other famous acts like Little Richard, Ike and Tina Turner, Jayne Mansfield, The Hollies, and Herman's Hermits. There are entertaining accounts of meeting famous celebrities like Elvis and Jerry Lewis as well. From there Tappy settles in to Michael Jeffery's management office where he provides priceless anecdotes about managing Hendrix.

Ultimately the book is cleverly designed to build up to its main subject, that is, the intertwined fate and destiny of Tappy, The Animals, Michael Jeffery, Chas Chandler, and all the other main players who were involved with Jimi Hendrix's death. The book's last third evolves around Jimi and his fate with Michael Jeffery. Being the carefree insider and Newcastle employee of Jeffery, Tappy experienced Jimi's death from the perspective of manager and Jeffery office insider. He was a personal assistant and coworker to Jeffery. Because of this Tappy became a front seat witness to Jeffery's confession and the suspicious evidence around Jimi's death that only such a person could witness. While perhaps Tappy may have embellished a bit readers with studied knowledge of the case can see Tappy is telling the truth elsewhere in his book. Since the evidence backs what he's saying there's no reason to think he's not telling it with Jeffery's confession. Kudos to Tappy. May history remember him as the brave man who told the truth for Jimi when everyone else had something to hide.

Dissapointing
By LoyalKite
'Rock Roadie' is an entertaining read but the writing itself is mediocre at best. It quickly gets repetitive and is essentially a roadie bragging about all the women he's had sex with. There are certainly some humorous stories and pranks that Wright indulges the reader in but overall the book leaves a sour, dirty aftertaste. Much of it seems exaggerated and untrue as well (I'm supposed to believe this sex fiend turned down Jayne Mansfield... HA!). His "revelation" about Jimi Hendrix's death is vague, to say the least. Overall: somewhat entertaining but only worth a read if you're a huge fan of 60's rock.

Awful
By Zarda
Having been in my teens and 20's during the 1960's with roadie friends both in the USA and the UK, I looked forward to this book. However, I was disappointed with the quality (very, very poor) of writing and the (sexist/bigoted) content. After making it half way through this inconsistent, 5th grade book, I threw it into the trash. Waste of time and money.
