Better than I was expecting!
By R S Cobblestone
I expected this book, Writing Papers in the Biological Sciences, to be another of those dull, detail obsessed books on someone or another's interpretation of various style manuals for writing - Chicago, APA, and so on.

It's better than that.

This slim book is easy to read, discusses various types of writing in addition to oral and poster presentations, and discusses organizing data, using literature, and more.

The spiral bound format makes it easy to keep next to your keyboard as you are typing and working on a particular reference format.

I appreciate this contribution to student success. This was a text for my students this semester, and it was easy to keep referring to it for style issues.

Tales from Moominvalley: a gem of a collection
By A Customer
Readers large and small who enjoy a well-told tale will find many hours of pleasure with Tove Jansson's "Tales From Moominvalley." Written by the famed children's author in the 1950s and first published in English in 1963, "Tales" contains nine pithy short stories that startle and delight.
Jansson's familiar characters -- half animal and half human -- wander through these tales set in the finnish countryside.
In "The Last Dragon in the World," young Moomintroll discovers unrequited love and learns the value of friendship. "The Secret of the Hattifatteners" presents the patriarch Moominpappa in an unusual mid-life crisis: after years of domesticity, he takes to the sea with a band of mysterious silent creatures, who only come alive during thunderstorms.
A magnificent study of the value of letting go is Jansson's bittersweet "The Fillyjonk who Believed in Disaster." In it, a worn, harried creature named the Fillyjonk is conned by a real estate salesman to rent a summer house that supposedly belonged to her ancestors.
Upon arriving at the dreary home on a windswept peninsula, the ever-toiling Fillyjonk senses not only that she's been had -- but that there's further trouble awaiting. Will the images of a violent hurricane that flit in the Fillyjonk's mind come to fruition? The morning finds the Fillyjonk liberated from her house of memories, only a china kitten tucked in her hand.
I loved these stories growing up in the 1960s and '70s, and even today, I re-read them from time to time. Dark, funny, instrospective -- the Moomin characters have little in common with the plastic heroes of many children's books. If only life were half as satisfying as a Moomin book. -- Queza

A real surprise
By kallan
I picked up this book because I thought I hadn't read it before, wanting to see the Moominvalley books through adult eyes - not to have my childhood memories of favourite books tarnished. As it turns out, I had read "Tales from Moominvalley" before (the fungus-covered granny was the trigger for my recollection), but I was really relieved to find that Tove Jansson's books are just as good as I remember - and there is, I think, even more for the adult to appreciate and enjoy than there is for the child.
I generally dislike the short story genre, but not when it's done like this. Every short story is simply that, a short story; not a contrived literary exercise with the obligatory "twist in the tail". Jansson's stories are charming little gems, full of wonderful moments and images, thought-provoking and touching. Her characters are often the lonely, the lost, and the troubled, and she makes you feel for them and understand them, without ever becoming ridiculous or sentimental. The tales about Snufkin and his tune and the Fillyjonk who believed in disasters are shining examples of this. But Jansson can write humour and happiness just as well, as the tales of the invisible child and the fir tree show.
I really can't speak highly enough of this book. Jansson's wonderful insight into people, her spare, deft prose, and her brilliant imagination make a great combination. Buy it for your children or for yourself.

my thoughts
By misha
I would like to say that I, as a small child, read the complete Moomintroll series, given to me by flatmate of my mother and myself who took a particular pleasure in improving my ability to read ( actually, I think he was getting annoyed at my small fingers leafing through his prized historical library every Saturday morning while my mother was at work ), and I can't thank this person enough for doing so, even though I have never seen him since that moment of my life, so thankyou David.
One particular work by the author has stuck with me throughout my life, a story within this volume by the name of " The Fillyjonk Who Believed In Disasters ", the reason being it is a remarkably adult tale given to such young minds. I feel that this story is quite dark, the character leading such a quite, and safe existance, all coming to failing at the hands of a huge storm. I myself being a victem of such events twice in my life I always think of this tale in reflection to our views on " home " and " security ", and the precarious state of their existence in regards to the very strength of natural forces. Such huge upheaval also brings us to the age old question of " purpose ", something which the author gives the reader the opportunity to do with the character in this story, quite a question for a young child. It is a strange tale, this one, and I urge adults as well as children to read it.

She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. Chapter One

"This isn't funny!" her father yelled.

No, it wasn't, Kylie Galen thought as she leaned into the refrigerator to find something to drink. In fact, it was so not funny she wished she could crawl in beside the mustard and moldy hot dogs, shut the door, and not hear the angry voices spewing from the living room.

Her parents were at it again.

Not that it would go on much longer, she thought as the mist of the fridge seeped out the door.

Today was the day.

Kylie's throat tightened. She swallowed a lump of raw emotion and refused to cry.

Today had to be the suckiest day of her life. And she'd had some pretty sucky days lately, too. Acquiring a stalker, Trey breaking up with her, and her parents announcing their divorce—yup, sucky pretty much covered it. It was no wonder her night terrors had returned full force.

"What have you done with my underwear?" Her father's growl spilled into the kitchen, snuck under the refrigerator door, and bounced around the hot dogs.

His underwear? Kylie pressed a cold diet soda can to her forehead.

"Why would I do anything with your underwear?" her mother asked in her oh-so-nonchalant voice. That was her mom all right, nonchalant. Cold as ice.

Kylie's gaze shot out the kitchen window to the patio where she'd seen her mom earlier. There, a pair of her dad's tighty-whities dangled half out of the smoldering grill.

Just great. Her mother had barbecued her father's shorts. That's it. Kylie was never eating anything cooked on that grill again.

Fighting tears, she shoved the diet soda back on the rack, shut the fridge, and moved into the doorway. Maybe if they saw her, they'd stop acting like juveniles and let her be the kid again.

Her dad stood in the middle of the room, a pair of underwear clutched in his fist. Her mom sat on the sofa, calmly sipping hot tea.

"You need psychological help," her father yelled at her mom.

Two points for her dad, Kylie thought. Her mom did need help. So why was Kylie the one who had to sit on a shrink's sofa two days a week?

Why was her dad—the man everyone swore Kylie had wrapped around her little finger—going to move out today and leave her behind?

She didn't blame her dad for wanting to leave her mom, aka the Ice Queen. But why wasn't he taking Kylie with him? Another lump rose in her throat.

Dad swung around and saw her, then shot back into the bedroom, obviously to pack the rest of his things‚minus his underwear, which at this moment sent up smoke signals from the backyard grill.

Kylie stood there, staring at her mom, who sat reading over work files as if it were any other day.

The framed photographs of Kylie and her father that hung over the sofa caught her attention and tears stung her eyes. The pictures had been taken on their annual father and daughter trips.

"You've got to do something," Kylie pleaded.

"Do what?" her mom asked.

"Change his mind. Tell him you're sorry you grilled his shorts." That you're sorry you've got ice water running through your veins. "I don't give a flip what you do, just don't let him go."

"You don't understand." And just like that, her mom, void of any emotion, shifted her attention back to her papers.

Right then, her dad, suitcase in his hand, shot through the living room. Kylie went after him and followed him out the door into Houston's stifling afternoon heat.

"Take me with you," she begged, not caring if he saw her tears. Maybe the tears would help. There'd been a time when crying got her whatever she wanted from him. "I don't eat much," she sniffled, giving humor a shot.

He shook his head but, unlike her mom, at least he had emotion in his eyes. "You don't understand."

You don't understand. "Why do y'all always say that? I'm sixteen years old. If I don't understand, then explain it to me. Tell me the big secret and get it over with."

He stared down at his feet as if this were a test and he'd penned the answers on the toes of his shoes. Sighing, he looked up. "Your mom . . . she needs you."

"Needs me? Are you kidding? She doesn't even want me." And neither do you. The realization caused Kylie's breath to catch in her lungs. He really didn't want her.

She wiped a tear from her cheek and that's when she saw him again. Not her dad, but Soldier Dude, aka her very own stalker. Standing across the street, he wore the same army duds as before. He looked as if he'd just walked out of one of those Gulf War movies her mom loved. Only instead of shooting at things or being blown up, he stood frozen in one spot and stared right at Kylie with sad, yet very scary eyes.

She'd noticed him stalking her a few weeks ago. He'd never spoken to her and she hadn't spoken to him. But the day she pointed him out to her mom, and Mom hadn't seen him . . . well, that's when Kylie's world slid off its axis. Her mom thought she was making it up to get attention, or worse. With the worse being that Kylie was losing her grip on reality. Sure, the night terrors that had tormented her when she was a kid had returned, worse than ever. Her mom said the shrink could help her work through them, but how could she do that when Kylie didn't even remember them? She only knew they were bad. Bad enough to have her wake up screaming.

Kylie wanted to scream now. Wanted to scream for her dad to turn around and look—to prove that she hadn't lost her mind. At the very least, maybe if her dad actually saw her stalker, her parents would let her off from seeing the shrink. It wasn't fair.

But life wasn't fair, as her mom had reminded her more than once.

Nevertheless, when Kylie looked back, he was gone. Not Soldier Dude, but her dad. She turned toward the driveway and saw him shoving his suitcase in the backseat of his red convertible Mustang. Mom had never liked that car, but Dad loved it.

Kylie ran to the car. "I'll make Grandma talk to Mom. She'll fix . . ." No sooner had the words escaped Kylie's lips than she remembered the other major sucky event she'd had plopped into her life.

She couldn't run to Grandma to fix her problems anymore. Because Grandma was dead. Gone. The vision of Nana lying cold in the casket filled Kylie's head and another lump crawled up her throat.

Her dad's expression morphed into parental concern, the same look that had landed Kylie at the shrink's office three weeks ago.

"I'm fine. I just forgot." Because remembering hurt too much. She felt a lone tear roll down her cheek.

Dad moved in and hugged her. The embrace lasted even longer than his usual hugs, but it ended too soon. How could she let him go? How could he leave her?

His arm dropped from around her and he physically set her back. "I'm just a phone call away, Pumpkin."

Swiping at her tears, hating her watery weakness, she watched her dad's red convertible get smaller as it buzzed down the street. Wanting to be alone in her room, she started to run inside. Then she remembered and looked back across the street to see if Soldier Dude had pulled his usual disappearing act.

Nope. He was still there, staring, stalking. Scaring the bejeebies out of her and making her angry at the same time. He was the reason she had to see a shrink.

Then Mrs. Baker, her elderly neighbor, toddled out to get her mail. She smiled at Kylie but not once did the old librarian glance at Soldier Dude taking up residence on her front lawn, even when he stood less than two feet from her.

Weird.

So weird it sent an unnatural chill tiptoeing down Kylie's spine, the same kind of chill Kylie had gotten at Nana's funeral.

What the hell was going on?

Wonderful paranormal story with a coming of age twist.
By Wendy L. Hines
Kylie Galen is at a rough point in her young life. Her boyfriend just dumped her for not putting out, her parents are getting a divorce and her dad is moving out. To top it all off, her night terrors have come back.

Kylie decides to shake it off with a night out with her friends. She goes to a party but really isn't having a good time. However, when the cops come, she is holding a drink. Her mom comes to get her out of jail and announces to Kylie that she is sending her to a summer camp for troubled teens.

Kylie knows she didn't drink or do any drugs at the party but all of her whining and wheedling doesn't get her out of camp. She feels alone; that her mother doesn't love her and her father doesn't want her. But the kids at the camp are unique. They look goth and all have their own looks. When Kylie is oriented, she learns that everyone at the camp has a special gift - supernatural gifts. Camp leader Holliday tries to convince Kylie she is special too, but she is having none of it. Sure, she may be seeing ghosts, but humans can see ghosts too, right?

Then, she meets a half-fae boy who really reminds her of her ex-boyfriend, but she is still attracted to him. To further confuse her, a boy she knew when she was little is at the camp too, and he really makes her tingle. But the Feds keep coming to the camp, interrogating the teens, looking for something, even though they are vague.

Kylie tries to deal with her ghosts, makes friends with a witch and a vampire, juggles two boys, adjusts to her parents divorcing, and tries to figure out who she really is. Together, with a bit of mystery tossed in, they merge into a wonderful paranormal story with a coming of age twist. C.C. Hunter does a wonderful job of world-building and creating likable and realistic characters. I look forward to more of Kylie and her friends! Great YA Read!!

Very disappointed
By DaLaNa
I was really looking forward to this book. The blurb made it sound right up my street.
During the first few chapters, I really, really tried to give it the benefit of the doubt. I forced myself to ignore the 'teenagers-will-be-teenagers' clichés that appear in just about every paragraph, the clunky dialogue and exhausted issues this girl faces. I was surprised when the party that lands the girl in trouble with her mother ended just as quickly as it began. I expected something interesting, something that would live up to the blurb, at least. Or, perhaps, just enough time to find a shred of empathy for the protagonist, if not anyone else.
Eventually, I had to deem this book impenetrable - though not for want of trying. As a teenager myself, I found the attempt at representing young people to be almost infuriating. And when I wasn't rolling my eyes at teenager-speak, I was wincing at how unashamedly the 'important parts' were being rubbed in my face. "Look! This bit is important for later! Look! Suspicious boy is suspicious!"
This book feels formulaic, rushed, reminiscent of that whole rush to run out the next Twilight.
I was disappointed to find myself removing my bookmark from Born at Midnight. It had potential. I was excited. I moved it to the top of my to-read pile only to encounter a vapid, annoying story almost impossibly far from anything I am used to reading from YA.

Like Camp Half Blood from the Percy Jackson series, but with older teen weres, vampires, witches, & fairies etc.
By AJ
BORN AT MIDNIGHT is like Camp Half Blood from the Percy Jackson series, except that the Shadow Falls campers are older teens, and instead of demigods there are werewolves, vampires, witches, fairies, and other paranormal creatures. Plus there is a whole lot of romance.

BORN AT MIDNIGHT starts off a little slow. Meeting all the campers at Shadow Falls and learning all the camp rules etc. is not as interesting as I would have hoped. Specifically Kylie's hormone driven responses to several of the male campers while still lusting after her ex made me lose a lot of respect for her.

Fortunately, the second half of BORN AT MIDNIGHT is significantly better than the first. Kylie's cabin mates gain some depth and dimension. One, a new vampire being torn between two sides of her family, the other a dyslexic witch struggling to overcome her disability and not disappoint her parents. Best of all, the three guys vying for Kylie's attention begin to distinguish themselves from one another and she starts to finally examine her attraction for each guy and consider their true motives (sex, control, and maybe love?). Even the issues with her parent's divorce and her perception of both her mom and dad takes an interesting twist.

The key to launching a new series is finding a balance between giving answers while holding back enough to generate interest in future books. BORN AT MIDNIGHT does that beautifully. I'll definitely be back for the next book in the Shadow Falls series called AWAKE AT DAWN when it's released in October 2011.

Sexual Content:
Kissing. A few scenes of mild sensuality. References to sex. Teen Pregnancy. References to masturbation.

From Publishers Weekly
Deserving of a better subtitle, dermatologist-to-the-stars Wu's first book is packed with helpful tips. Dense but highly readable, the tome is split into four sections: a look at our largest organ, the skin; a guide to skin disorders accompanied by Wu's insights into foods both helpful and harmful for treating them; four weeks' worth of menu suggestions; and a quickie primer to homemade skincare products. Wu also includes a guide to Botox and other small-scale surgical interventions. The author is refreshingly honest and approachable. She enjoys having a tan, for instance, and doesn't see the point in telling her patients to wear long sleeves outdoors at any hour of the day. Though urging readers to eat organic, minimally-processed food is hardly a breakthrough, Wu's case for doing so is well-explained and easy to implement. The calm, sensible approach she takes here will be appreciated by anyone in search of perfect-or at least better-skin. Photos.

"The key to looking younger - as I have learned from Dr. Wu - isn't copious amounts of Botox or even plastic surgery, it's a diet that will improve your skin from the inside out, as her Feed Your Face Diet has done for me. My skin looks radiant, smooth, and ten years younger."

Poorly written, unorganized, repetitious
By Amazon Customer
This book has good information regarding foods to boost collagen and elastin production, and how to keep from sabotaging your complexion by eating foods that will cause breakouts and other skin conditions...but, it's very poorly organized. There are interjections with pages of unrelated information and chapters repeat paragraphs, verbatim, from prior chapters. There is a sample "diet" in the back that helps a person create a meal plan that incorporates all of the foods she recommends, but it seems to be somewhat tailored to asian cuisine. I also felt that it really needed a summary of what foods provide what benefit so it would be easier to modify your own taste interests to incorporate her suggestions. The most I got from this book was that the superfoods are: red and orange veggies and almonds, and that the skin produces Vitamin D through a chemical reaction with the sun's rays (UVB or UVA..? don't recall which she said). She also pushes a lot of products by brand name which she admits she's been paid to research...which makes me assume she has a bias towards certain products regardless of whether they are truly the best. She also promotes her own practice and says that botox and other procedures are good to do and that she's basically the best.

I just didn't get a good feeling that I could believe everything because of her personal interest in selling/promoting her products and services, but there were some good tidbits of information about nutrients in food and the benefits, and descriptions of skin and hair problems and which nutrient would fix it (like why some people's eye brows get so thin on the edges, and why eyes get puffy), so I didn't feel like it was a total waste of money. You just have to suffer through a bunch to get those good tidbits.

IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR SKIN, THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
By gina
My sister gave me this book because I spend a lot of money on skin care products and she's always trying to get me to eat better. I was skeptical, but willing to give it a try. Well, I'm so glad she insisted that I read it. It's truly changed my life and the way i think about food and my skin. After reading the book I'm much more careful about what I put in my body because I know it's going to come out on my skin, and let me tell you, I've never looked or felt better. In the past month since i've been following the feed your face advice, I've lost 7 pounds and I have more energy than ever. And my skin, which used to break out around that time of the month, doesn't freak out around my period any more. It was really fun and easy to read --especially the celebrity diaries and stories about Dr. Wu's patients. My favorite part was the chapter on what to order at restaurants, since my job requires a lot of entertaining, and now I know what to order (and drink) when eating out. I also liked that each chapter has a summary so you can flip to the back to get the most important points. Also, a lot of Dr. Wu's advice is stuff I never heard of before, so I didn't feel like I'd "been there done that." This is a MUST READ if you care about your skin!! and your health.

If you are a writer or aspiring to be a writer, this is the book for you. It is concise, compact and user friendly. Even if you are not a student, it is a good book to have on hand to help you with grammar or writing or doing citations.

Rules for Writers with Writing about Literature, 7th edition
By AKstudent
Since school only started this week, I haven't used this book extensively. My instructor insisted that her students must have this (7th) edition as there were quite a few changes from Hacker's "yellow book" (the previous edition). I used the 6th edition last year and I found it very informative, in addition to being easy to use. I particularly like the tabs on this book, as it shortens the time spent searching for a particular topic.

BEST TEXTBOOK FOR WRITING ANY COLLEGE PAPER.
By Marleen
This manual is one of the most used books in my college studies. This manual will help you in any class that requires writing papers of any kind. I like the fact that they use real world examples for the citations and they have both APA and MLA styles to use.

Snow Falling in Spring: Coming of Age in China During the Cultural Revolution, by Moying Li

Most people cannot remember when their childhood ended. I, on the other hand, have a crystal-clear memory of that moment. It happened at night in the summer of 1966, when my elementary school headmaster hanged himself.

In 1966 Moying, a student at a prestigious language school in Beijing, seems destined for a promising future. Everything changes when student Red Guards begin to orchestrate brutal assaults, violent public humiliations, and forced confessions. After watching her teachers and headmasters beaten in public, Moying flees school for the safety of home, only to witness her beloved grandmother denounced, her home ransacked, her father's precious books flung onto the back of a truck, and Baba himself taken away. From labor camp, Baba entrusts a friend to deliver a reading list of banned books to Moying so that she can continue to learn. Now, with so much of her life at risk, she finds sanctuary in the world of imagination and learning.

This inspiring memoir follows Moying Li from age twelve to twenty-two, illuminating a complex, dark time in China's history as it tells the compelling story of one girl's difficult but determined coming-of-age during the Cultural Revolution.

Review

“Snow Falling in Spring joins other important books about the Cultural Revolution . . . as childhood testimonies to national trauma, cautionary tales for our own time, and appreciations for homes, old and new.” ―The San Francisco Chronicle

“At its essence, this is a book about the value of reading--to escape, to learn, to be sustained and to grow.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“The simple, direct narrative will grab readers with the eloquent account of daily trauma and hope.” ―Booklist, Starred Review

“Li effectively builds the climate of fear that accompanies the rise of the Red Guard. . . . Sketches about her grandparents root the narrative within a broader context of Chinese traditions as well as her own family's values, establishing a basis for Li's later portrayal of the individuals around her who respond to oppression with hope and faith in knowledge and education.” ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Beautifully written . . . offers a somewhat broader view of a nation in turmoil and illustrates the grit and determination necessary for survival in a dysfunctional society.” ―School Library Journal

“The narrative will enable readers to sympathize with Li and feel relief when she leaves to study at Swarthmore College after ten years of education in China.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Anyone under the impression that liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness is a birthright will find this book illuminating.” ―Peter Sís, author of The Wall

From Snow Falling in Spring

In front of Baba’s eyes, they flung book after book onto the stone floor. One of them reached into a lower shelf for Baba’s rare books. Dragging them out by their silk strings, he yanked them open.

“Please,” Baba pleaded, trying to free himself from the hands of his guard. “Don’t touch those.”

The guard pulled Baba’s arms back and tied a rope around them.

Then the soldiers dumped all our books into large hemp sacks that they pulled from the back of the truck. “The paper factory will turn this trash into pulp in no time,” they announced. When Lao Lao tried to plead with them, a soldier just pushed her away. Dragging the sacks through our gate, they flung them, one after another, onto the open truck. Then, hurling Baba on top of the bulging bags, the soldiers drove away in a cloud of dust, leaving my grandmother filled with sorrow . . .

With our neighbors’ help, I cleared the rubble. After everyone had left, I closed the door and all the windows and sank to the cold stone floor, my face buried in my arms. The sun was setting, and darkness was creeping into the house.

Our bookshelves now stood naked in the shadows— like proud but defeated old warriors.

A wonderful read. This marvelously crafted book tells of a young girl's growing up during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The exquisitely gentle yet powerful prose conveys not only the pain and pathos of that turbulent period in modern China but also the characteristics which enable us to endure and overcome adversity. There are many special characters such as Ms. Li's grandmother Lao,Lao and the influential teacher Mr. Hu. Highly recommended!

A beautiful and powerful account of life during the Cultural Revolution and a must read for anyone who wants a greater understanding of China and her people. It is also a universal story about the strength of family, friendship, and hope in the face of tremendous adversity. Li's compassionate look at the people and experiences that shaped her life during one of China's most turbulent periods flows effortlessly, and will continue to touch you long after you've finished reading it.

About the Author

C.C. Hunter is the author of the young adult fantasy series Shadow Falls, including the books Born at Midnight and Awake at Dawn. She grew up in Alabama, where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and regularly rescued potential princes, in the form of Alabama bullfrogs, from her brothers. Today, she's still fascinated with lightning bugs, mostly wears shoes, but has turned her focus to rescuing mammals. She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. When she's not writing, she's reading, spending time with her family, or shooting things--with a camera, not a gun.

C.C. Hunter is a pseudonym. Her real name is Christie Craig and she also writes humorous romantic suspense romance novels.

Another great book from C.C. Hunter!
By Amanda Welling
First Impressions: The Shadow Falls series is one of my favorites and I was beyond excited when a copy of Taken at Dusk landed on my doorstep. I just feel like the author has an amazing amount of talent and her books never bore me. Each of the covers on the three books that are currently out right now is gorgeous too, so they look great sitting on my shelves. If you haven't read the first two books in this series, you are definitely missing out on some good stuff, especially if you are into paranormal themes!

First 50 Pages: I flew through this entire book in one sitting, like I have with the previous titles. I also believe that each of the books get better and better as they go, because I really loved this one! It is full of twists that I didn't see coming and it has a lot of action in it, too. That is one thing that I really love about these books, that they are unpredictable which is a rare find recently.

Characters & Plot: When I first read the first book, Born at Midnight, I was instantly drawn into the plot line and each of the characters. We are introduced to Kylie, a girl who doesn't have very good luck who is sent to a camp for teenagers who are "troubled." When Kylie arrives at Shadow Falls, she realizes that there is more than meets the eye since the camp is full of teens with supernatural abilities, with some not knowing the exact extent of their powers, including Kylie. Then in Awake at Dawn, the second book in the Shadow Falls series, Kylie knows for sure that she has some kind of special powers and she continues on the path of self-discovery. There is also the introduction of a love triangle between Kylie, Lucas and Derek, as well as other supernatural beings on the hunt for Kylie, but she has no idea why they want her.

In this book, Taken at Dusk, Kylie is still searching for what she is and she is willing to go to extreme measures to figure it out, putting herself and others in danger. Kylie is still trying to process the crazy events that happened in Awake at Dawn and everything seems to be back to normal, but not for long. A strange woman who doesn't know who she is begins to stalk Kylie and brings an ominous message to her, which sets off the action in the story and odd things begin to occur. Kylie is still torn between Lucas an Derek, but she does try to make a decision but things are standing in her way. As the book synopsis says, Kylie does FINALLY figure out what she is.....and I totally did not expect it at all and neither did she or the other people in Shadow Falls.

The characters are wonderful as usual in Taken at Dusk. We have an introduction of a new character named Ellie, who I didn't care for at first, but she grew on me towards the end of the book. The boys are still great and I still have no idea which one I want Kylie to end up with because C.C. Hunter made each of them so likable in their own way. Perry and Della are good characters that bring some humor and comic relief to the story and none of the characters seemed to fall flat, which is a huge plus.

Final Thoughts: C.C. Hunter never disappoints me with the books in this series. I'm dying to know what will happen next with Kylie and her friends. I'm hoping it isn't going to be a terribly long wait! If you are into paranormal stories with fresh ideas, great characters, and a fun plot line, I would highly recommend checking out the Shadow Falls series!

Love it...BUT
By Bookenz
I've been reading this series and find the books total page turners. The main character Kylie is very interesting and the story keeps you wondering what's going on and just what kind of supernatural Kylie will turn out to be (although the author is really stretching this out). Spoiler coming, so stop here.

The one complaint I HAVE to mention that I'm noticing about Kylie however is she always seems to want the boy she doesn't have. Here she has two boys madly panting after her--Derek and Lucas, and she always seems to be dreaming the most about the one she doesn't have. When she was with Derek, it was Lucas that she wanted, and now that she has Lucas and Derek is on the sidelines as a "friend," she is fantasizing about being with Derek. So this is very annoying because at this rate, she'll lose them both. Maybe she deserves to.

LOVE IT!

*Complimentary copy provided. This does NOT affect my review in any way.*

I received Taken at Dusk from St. Martin's Press/Griffin, including Born at Midnight and Awake at Dawn, book one and two in the Shadow Falls Series, since I hadn't read the series then. But I can promise you, that I devoured this series in two days (three books in two days!) and absolutely loved it.

This is a popular series among paranormal junkies out there, but when I first heard of it, I decided not to read it. Why? Because at the time, I had been reading Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins, and the blurb sounded suspiciously like that of Hex Hall. Once all the starred reviews started pouring in though, I regretted it, so I'm glad to have a chance to read the entire series!

Taken at Dusk starts immediately where Awake at Dawn left off, Kylie about to meet her adoptive parents, the ones who just might have the clue to finding out exactly what she is. But when she gets there, her "adoptive parents" and her barely get ten minutes before they're ushered out and it looks as if the couple weren't her adoptive parents, but were, instead, imposters. Shocking! And then animals are suddenly protecting her. An eagle that suddenly catches a snake mere inches from her feet, a deer jumping in front of her just before lightning strikes the spot she would've been in if not for the deer. But why? Taken at Dusk raises more questions than it answers, leaving readers shocked and mystified.

I fell in love with our characters in book one, wanting to hug the life out of them in book two, and started crying for them in book three. Kylie had that strong personality we love in heroines, Holiday had that older-sister feel, helping Kylie along the way, Burnett was like Kylie's protector, and he was absolutely adorable when it came to Holiday! Lucas was edgy and dangerous, while Derek was sweet and caring. And I loved the ghosts! I don't know why, but I've always loved ghost-paranormal stories. No matter how much they creeped me out. And we finally meet the dreaded Ellie whom I loved!
This third installment of the Shadow Falls series was absolutely breathtaking, and I enjoyed every page! Kylie has fully accepted her paranormal blood and she's learning, slowly, to trust her father again. The ending scenes had me flipping to the end and leaving me shell-shocked. And to those who have read Taken At Dusk, what do you think a chameleon is? I have a theory. But I'm not sharing it!

Summary: The writing is beautiful, the characters are even more wonderful, and I don't think I can wait until Whispers at Moonrise comes out! This is definitely a paranormal romance that Fiction Freaks should read, whether or not its your thing.
