Chapter 1
FIRST KISS

On a day like no other, she saw him running over a grassy hillside with the snowcapped Rocky Mountains in the background. Linda Wheeler was sitting on the passenger side of a baby blue Jeep. She had never seen anyone as alive as Freddie Steinmark. Here was the boy with the big, sparkling eyes and the smile that chased away her blues. The mere sight of him left her breathless.
Months earlier, in the fall of 1963, he had stormed into her life in the hallway of Manning Junior High. The eighth-grade girls, hoping to ogle Freddie that first day of school, had gathered near the front entrance, anticipating his arrival. They chattered excitedly about a heartthrob more celestial than Elvis Presley.
“I hear that Freddie Steinmark is around here someplace,” one of the girls loudly whispered.
“I’ve got my eyes wide open,” another gushed. “I might just kiss Freddie Steinmark straight on the lips when I see him.”
Linda could not have cared less at the time. Nothing on that first day of school in this strange place was going to make her happy. Against her will, her family had moved twelve miles from near downtown Denver to Wheat Ridge, a place a little too countrified for a girl from the city. This outpost seemed as distant from urban Denver as Memphis was to Mozambique. When the sun set over the Rockies, everyone headed home to watch The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett, then went straight to bed, or so it seemed.
That first week of September, Linda was walking into an alien world she could not comprehend. Even more troubling was the realization that this strange journey into nowhere was just beginning. In two years, she would enter Wheat Ridge High School, where the cheerleaders wore overalls and the team was called the Farmers. At football games, one of the male students actually dressed like a hayseed rode around on a mule named Daisy. The drill team square-danced at halftime. Any day, Linda expected to see goats grazing on the football field.
Linda did not need to remind herself why the Wheelers had moved to the end of the earth. Simply, her mother was seeking a controlled environment where she could raise her two youngest daughters, Linda and Shannon. Marion Wheeler did not want to endure another teenage pregnancy, as she had with her oldest daughter a year earlier. In Wheat Ridge, she knew she could keep the reins on Linda and Shannon and shoo the boys away.
Linda wore black horn-rimmed glasses and a blue dress. Before heading off to school that morning, she peered into the mirror at a girl she judged to have average looks. Boys rarely gave her the time of day. Given her mother’s attitude toward the opposite sex, she wondered if she would ever get a date. A boy with the status and charm of Freddie Steinmark would never show interest in her and, if he did, she wasn’t feeling all that sociable anyway.
As Freddie swaggered into the building that morning, toting a passel of books and motoring like an all-district scatback, every head turned to see the raven-haired youngster with the Pepsodent smile. Amazingly, Linda felt his big brown eyes watching her. The girls were standing in line outside homeroom, waiting for the bell to ring. Freddie smiled and winked at her. How is this possible? Why is he not looking at the other girls? Freddie walked a little farther down the hall, turned, and set his eyes on Linda once more. She felt light-headed. She knew the others were jealous. Why is Mr. Wonderful stuck on the new girl? We’ve known him a lot longer than her.
In Wheat Ridge, Freddie Steinmark was bigger than the Beatles. They loved to talk about “Fast Freddie” and his athletic gift. They said that before long he would be playing halfback at the University of Colorado, then it would be off to the pros. A devout Catholic who attended mass almost every day, he also made straight A’s. He was the hero of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. He had once played on a Denver midget league football team that won every game for eight straight seasons.
Freddie was brimming with so much energy that his vitality seemed to flow through his pores. The girls around Wheat Ridge thought he was the sweetest boy they had ever met, but the boys who competed against him in sports knew better. The kid possessed a hard edge honed by a pushy father and some pushier coaches. When Freddie walked onto the football field, or the basketball court, or the baseball diamond, look out. Winning in Freddie’s world was the only way to have fun. Little wonder that Mickey Mantle was his hero and why Freddie was idolized in the same manner as “The Mick.”
Linda knew virtually nothing about sports, having grown up with two sisters who did not know if a football was blown up or stuffed. Her father Selby MacMillan Wheeler was an M.I.T. graduate and a well-known architect in the Denver area. He was not the type of man who would sit in front of the TV, watching the weekend games and memorizing batting averages. So the idea of Freddie Steinmark being the best athlete in the school did not impress her. Still, she could not get over those eyes, that smile, and the way he carried himself.
As the days passed, Freddie seemed to be everywhere. One day, she peered up from her desk in homeroom and saw him walking toward her. He casually sat down in the desk next to hers. For the next fifteen minutes, until the bell rang, he stared at Linda without saying a word. The same routine followed the next day and the next.
Linda was beginning to wonder if Freddie was ever going to speak when Rocco Rofrano, another eighth grader, sidled up next to her in the hallway. Rocco was a handsome boy and he was one of Freddie’s few non-jock friends, but they were extremely tight, going all the way back to kindergarten.
“You know, Freddie is really crazy about you,” Rocco said. “He’s liked you a lot since the day he saw you.”
“Come on, Rocco,” Linda said. “ Are you being square with me? Are you sure Freddie’s talking about me?”
“He only has eyes for you, Linda.”
“So why doesn’t he talk to me?”
“Because he doesn’t know what to say.”
“So why does he sit and stare at me?”
Rocco grinned. “Because he likes you. I mean, he likes you a lot.”
Linda felt a mixture of excitement and frustration as she walked away from Rocco that day. Boys were a new phenomenon in her life, and she really wanted a boyfriend. She knew, however, that all eighth graders were still fighting off inhibitions. This agonizing game of silence could drag on forever.
Little did Freddie know that Linda was soon watching him—from afar. She went to the junior high football games and, at first, was completely confused by the confounded system of first downs and other assorted silliness. One thing was certain about the Manning Junior High games: Freddie Steinmark was the star who carried the ball on practically every play. He scored most of the touchdowns. He played offense and defense and never left the field. He was the reason the band played. When the games were over, the cheerleaders chased him all the way to the locker room.
As football was winding down in the late fall, and the heavy snowfalls arrived, Freddie took his game to the gymnasium, where he dominated the basketball court. To Linda, it seemed that no one at Manning Junior High cheered for anyone but Freddie Steinmark. Does he possibly know how popular he is?
The next day, she shook her head and sat down at her desk, waiting for Freddie to come bee-bopping into her life once more. She knew he would have nothing to say.

Out on the rolling farmland of Wheat Ridge, the winds were soft and cool in the spring as the sun began to warm the farmland stretching west. The basketball season was almost over in late March and Freddie soon would be lacing up his baseball cleats.
Linda was sitting in the Jeep, basking in the sunshine, waiting for her sister Shannon to turn the ignition key, when she spotted Freddie running toward her. She thought there must be some kind of mistake. His dark skin glistened and she was mesmerized by everything about him. She prayed he would open his mouth.
Shannon Wheeler, sitting behind the wheel, almost panicked when she saw Freddie tearing over the hill. “Oh, my God, what is he doing?” she yelped. She released the clutch and said, “Linda, let’s get out of here!”
“No, no, no!” Linda yelled. “Wait!”
“Gotta go,” Shannon said. “What would Mother say?”
“Stop! Dammit!”
The windows were rolled down because of the beautiful weather. Within seconds, Freddie’s face was inches from Linda’s. She had never seen such a happy boy. He flashed the smile she would never forget.
“Wanna go out?” he blurted. The voice seemed strange. She had never heard it.
“Well, sure, Freddie Steinmark,” Linda said. “Of course I would like to go out with you. What are we gonna do?”
“How about let’s go to dinner tomorrow night after the game?”
“Why not?” she said, turning slowly and smiling at Shannon.
Shannon rolled her eyes as her left foot searched for the clutch. “Can we leave now, Linda?”
“One second,” she said. Then she turned to Freddie. “Where do you want to meet?”
Freddie named the restaurant. Again, their eyes met and they shook hands.
As the Jeep pulled away, Linda’s eyes were locked onto Freddie’s. She would think about him for the rest of the day. But how in the name of Pikes Peak was she going to explain this to her mother?

A date the following night with Freddie meant that Linda would sit in the stands by herself. Amid the adulation of the Wheat Ridge fans, Freddie led the basketball team in scoring and a victory over Arvada Junior High. When she saw him dribbling past opponents, and clicking on the open shots, the excitement shot through her arteries. Little Freddie was as smooth as smoke through a keyhole. Everyone knew who was in charge on the floor. Linda could never imagine how a boy as cool as Freddie would look her way.
By the time he showered and dressed and met Linda at the local diner, it was already 11:15. Linda’s ironclad curfew was midnight, which meant she would have a half hour with her newfound Romeo.
“I can’t tell you how frustrated I was that night,” she remembered almost forty years later. “All day I’d looked forward to being with Freddie and we had about twenty minutes together. I had a date with the cutest boy in the school and it was over just like that.”
It was not over. The next day in homeroom, Freddie sat next to her and started to talk. Linda finally began to wonder if he would ever stop. She had no idea of all the things on his mind. He already had big plans for the two of them.
Freddie called her every night at home. On the fourth date, he did something that stunned her into total silence. Standing next to the junior high gymnasium, beneath a moonlit sky, he kissed her. Then he looked into her eyes and said, “I love you, Linda.” She thought she would cry.
Linda promised herself she would never forget the moment. It was her first kiss. Never had a boy expressed his love for her. Everything was happening so fast. Am I supposed to feel this way? If so, Wheat Ridge was starting to look pretty doggone good.

Excellent......

I have to disclose that I played football in high school in Texas in the late 60s and was a fan of the Texas Longhorns. As a result, I knew about Freddy Steinmark's illness and the success of that team. However, I wasn't that familiar with his character or with the intricacies of the UT program. Dent has done an incredible job in describing both and drawing the reader in to that world. I highly recommend this book.

Nary a Dry Eye

The Freddie Steinmark was a great book to read, and a hard book to read. Jim Dent tells the story of the too-small, all-heart safety of the 1969 Texas Longhorns who played an entire season with a tumor in his leg. Refusing to tell anyone about his pain, doing all that he could to stay on the field, Steinmark's courage is the stuff of legend. No one ever had more heart than Freddie Steinmark. By the end of the book, you'll be crying every chapter, just as the remembrance of Steinmark some 40 years later by those who knew him brought tears to nearly everyone who knew him.

Having read Dent's "The Junction Boys" and "12 Mighty Orphans" I was looking forward to reading "Courage Beyond the Game - The Freddy Steinmark Story". Once again, Dent does not disappoint. Truly an inspirational story of an incredibly courageous young man who fought all odds to start on a national championship football team (the University of Texas) and then playing his final year while hiding what turned out to be a deadly bone cancer. Dent does a fantastic job of capturing the era and takes you through a wide range of emotions in this great story.

Essayist and cultural critic Barbara Ehrenreich has always specialized in turning received wisdom on its head with intelligence, clarity, and verve. With some 12 million women being pushed into the labor market by welfare reform, she decided to do some good old-fashioned journalism and find out just how they were going to survive on the wages of the unskilled--at $6 to $7 an hour, only half of what is considered a living wage. So she did what millions of Americans do, she looked for a job and a place to live, worked that job, and tried to make ends meet.

As a waitress in Florida, where her name is suddenly transposed to "girl," trailer trash becomes a demographic category to aspire to with rent at $675 per month. In Maine, where she ends up working as both a cleaning woman and a nursing home assistant, she must first fill out endless pre-employment tests with trick questions such as "Some people work better when they're a little bit high." In Minnesota, she works at Wal-Mart under the repressive surveillance of men and women whose job it is to monitor her behavior for signs of sloth, theft, drug abuse, or worse. She even gets to experience the humiliation of the urine test.

So, do the poor have survival strategies unknown to the middle class? And did Ehrenreich feel the "bracing psychological effects of getting out of the house, as promised by the wonks who brought us welfare reform?" Nah. Even in her best-case scenario, with all the advantages of education, health, a car, and money for first month's rent, she has to work two jobs, seven days a week, and still almost winds up in a shelter. As Ehrenreich points out with her potent combination of humor and outrage, the laws of supply and demand have been reversed. Rental prices skyrocket, but wages never rise. Rather, jobs are so cheap as measured by the pay that workers are encouraged to take as many as they can. Behind those trademark Wal-Mart vests, it turns out, are the borderline homeless. In contrast to recent books by Michael Lewis and Dinesh D'Souza that explore the lives and psyches of the New Economy's millionares, Ehrenreich (Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class, etc.) turns her gimlet eye on the view from the workforce's bottom rung. Determined to find out how anyone could make ends meet on $7 an hour, she left behind her middle class life as a journalist except for $1000 in start-up funds, a car and her laptop computer to try to sustain herself as a low-skilled worker for a month at a time. In 1999 and 2000, Ehrenreich worked as a waitress in Key West, Fla., as a cleaning woman and a nursing home aide in Portland, Maine, and in a Wal-Mart in Minneapolis, Minn. During the application process, she faced routine drug tests and spurious "personality tests"; once on the job, she endured constant surveillance and numbing harangues over infractions like serving a second roll and butter. Beset by transportation costs and high rents, she learned the tricks of the trade from her co-workers, some of whom sleep in their cars, and many of whom work when they're vexed by arthritis, back pain or worse, yet still manage small gestures of kindness. Despite the advantages of her race, education, good health and lack of children, Ehrenreich's income barely covered her month's expenses in only one instance, when she worked seven days a week at two jobs (one of which provided free meals) during the off-season in a vacation town. Delivering a fast read that's both sobering and sassy, she gives readers pause about those caught in the economy's undertow, even in good times.

Adult/High School-Between 1998 and 2000, Ehrenreich spent about three months in three cities throughout the nation, attempting to "get by" on the salary available to low-paid and unskilled workers. Beginning with advantages not enjoyed by many such individuals-she is white, English-speaking, educated, healthy, and unburdened with transportation or child-care worries-she tried to support herself by working as a waitress, a cleaning woman, a nursing-home aide, and a Wal-Mart employee. She discovered that her average salary of $7 per hour couldn't even provide the necessities of life (rent, transportation, and food), let alone the luxury of health coverage. Her account is at once enraging and sobering. In straightforward language, she describes how labor-intensive, demeaning, and controlling such jobs can be: she scrubbed floors on her hands and knees, and found out that talking to coworkers while on the job was considered "time theft." She describes full-time workers who sleep in their cars because they cannot afford housing and employees who yearn for the ability to "take a day off now and then-and still be able to buy groceries the next day." In a concluding chapter, Ehrenreich takes on issues and questions posed before and during the experiment, including why these wages are so low, why workers are so accepting of them, and what Washington's refusal to increase the minimum wage to a realistic "living wage" says about both our economy and our culture. Save yourself

I started this audiobook a few days ago, and mid-way through disc 2 it's becoming evident that there's no way I'll make it to the end.

I honestly don't even know how to express my feelings towards the way she talks about the poor pitied people she encounters, the jobs she avoids (because she wants to slum it but not THAT much, right?) trailer trash, the jobs she takes and the "fat people hell" (WTF?). The GALL this woman has to pretend like she was truly living "the poor life" is nauseating. The book OOZES liberal elitist condescension- like I'm pretty sure she's the kind of person that would pull out the purell and wipe her hands in front of you after meeting anyone she felt was beneath her or donate to the poor- as long as she didn't actually have to, ya know, talk to them.

If you want to read about REAL LIFE just trying to make ends meet, this is a must read. I read it several years ago in one night because it gets you so involved in her day to day dialog....loaned it to someone and never got it back, so I ordered it again, and it reinforced my belief that you treat everyone good....you never know what the person behind the counter that is waiting on you is dealing with in her/his life. It really did change my thought pattern. Barbara Ehrenreich writes amazing well as she delves right into what it is to be the person doing somewhat of a thankless job. Worth your time to read if you care about others...

rich white privilege pretends to have to live off less

I found this book to be an abomination. It was sad to see that a book that has the potential to open eyes and change lives was used to show the privileged white society we live in. This book would be much better if she had approached the people and tried to get their stories rather than trying to create her own stories. You can't read that much into what she has written because she was only in each place for a month and sometimes went back home to her privileged life. The least she could have done was recognize that she is privileged in the book instead of writing as though she is better than everyone else. I was saddened to see that this is what qualifies as educational writing now a days. I do hope that if the author continues to write about a group of people she does not belong to she will think long and hard how she approaches it.

About the Author

Joe Starita was an investigative reporter and New York bureau chief for The Miami Herald, where one of his stories was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. He is now a professor at the University of Nebraska's College of Journalism and the author of The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge, an account of four generations of a Lakota Sioux family, that garnered a second Pulitzer Prize nomination, won the Mountain and Plains Booksellers Association Award, and has been published in six foreign languages.

Great Read of Fascinating True Story

This book was recommended by the History Book Club. I rarely read a nonfiction from front to back, this is one of the few that I could not put down. This is an inspiring story about a Ponca chief challenging the federal government in court and the many white citizens working on his behalf. While it tells of many horrors, it is a success story for all americans regardless if aboriginal, immigrant, or native. Tells of experiences in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and travels in Chicago, New York and other cities in eastern U.S. This is history of events that took place after the american civil war.

A Story Few of Us Know

As a graduate from UC Davis with a minor in Native American Studies, and being of Cherokee descent, I thought I know a fair amount of Native American history. While I had heard of Chief Standing Bears court battle to be recognized as a man and a citizen of the United States, I knew only the surface of this intriguing and important event.

Joe Starita has done Chief Standing Bear and the Ponca a great service in his well-written account of a fascinating chapter of US history that has far-reaching implications for all of us of Native American descent.

Starita manages to present the facts and keep the reader's interest in what could have been--but is not--just another boring history book. Starita's book is a page turner, especially as the trial approaches and he reveals one fascinating fact after another.

I only wish this book were required reading for all students of American history. It is an eye-opener!

Needed justice for Native-Americans

On the banks of the Missouri River on the border of present-day Nebraska and South Dakota lies a tributary of the Niobrara River, a place where history took place in the form of the trials of the Ponca Tribe which drifted from the present-day Carolinas to Nebraska over the course of a several centuries. From this tribe came a leader by the name of Standing Bear who settled down with his people to engage in agricultural pursuits when a boundary snafu between the United States Government and the Lakota tribe resulted in his and his tribe's eviction from the banks of the Niobrara and being relocated to what they called the Warm Country or Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). The removal to the territory down south resulted in the deaths and misery of many of their people in the spring and summer of 1877.

Upon the death of Standing Bear's son, he honored his son's request to be buried along the chalk bluffs along the Niobrara River and took a small group of Poncas from the Warm Country back to Nebraska. Braving cold and hunger, they almost made it back to their original home where they were arrested for leaving Indian Territory without permission from the federal government and were imprisoned for some time at Fort Omaha. It was here that a news reporter by the name of Thomas Tibbles heard about their plight and publicized the tribe's travails back on the east coast. Funds were raised to help defend Standing Bear and proclaim that he was a man, a person who wanted to be recognized as such in the court of law. The story is a well written summary of the incidents that occurred so long ago. Vignettes of current day Poncas are included to give a flavor of the Ponca culture today.

The book has 236 pages of text along with an extensive bibliography and an index. It was disappointing that there were no end notes to reference the statements and facts in the book. A few reflections. Why weren't the Ponca allowed to negoiate for the land mistakenly given to the Lakota, especially since it was known that the Lakota did not need the land? Also, why weren't the Ponca given an option to aprrove the allotment of their lands via the Dawes Act? It is ironic that the Dawes Act was done out of benevolence, but in reality took land from the Indians without their consent and against previously negoitated treaties. A good introductory book on Standing Bear and the Ponca Tribe.

About the Author
Carrie Hintz is an associate professor of English and teaches Children’s and Young Adult Literature at Queens College/CUNY and The Graduate Center, CUNY. She is the author of An Audience of One: Dorothy Osborne’s Letters to Sir William Temple, 1652-1654 (University of Toronto Press, 2005) and the co-editor, with Elaine Ostry, of Utopian and Dystopian Writing for Children and Young Adults (Routledge, 2003). She recently co-edited, with Kate Broad and Balaka Basu, Contemporary Dystopian Fiction: Brave New Teenagers (forthcoming from Routledge, 2013). She has also published articles in the fields of seventeenth-century literature and life writing. She served as President of the Society for Utopian Studies from 2006 to 2010, and she continues to write about the politics and aesthetics of speculative fiction for children and young adults. Eric L. Tribunella is an associate professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi. His research interests include children’s and young adult literature, lesbian and gay literature, and gender and sexuality studies. He is the author of Melancholia and Maturation: The Use of Trauma in American Children's Literature (U. of Tennessee Press, 2010) and has published a number of articles in journals such as Children’s Literature, Children’s Literature Association Quarterly, The Lion and the Unicorn, and Children’s Literature in Education.

A good read

I had to purchase this book for my Children's lit. English class. I read the entire book yesterday even though the class isn't for another couple weeks. I found it to be a really well written critical look on the different issues that surround children's literature. At first I was surprised there was so much controversy in writing for children but it makes sense. Teachers, book authors, and parents alike use children's books as a tool to indoctrinate/instill values and knowledge in children so of course it's controversial.

Some of the issues the book looks at were:

Which books should be used in schools? The most neutral/unoffensive books or the most thought provoking?

At what age should children be exposed to controversial topics in school? Before they have critical thinking skills (when they just believe whatever you tell or read to them) or after (when they can think for themselves)?

Who has more of a right to instill values - parents or teachers? What if the parent disagrees with the values the teacher wants to instill through their choice of classroom books? [Unlike most of the other chapters I felt like this issue/chapter was a little too biased. It heavily favored the teachers while trivializing the parents concerns.]

Should books that offend be banned or censored?

Can an author of one race write about the experiences of another race?

If a person of one race/culture writes down the folk stories of another race/culture who should own the rights?

A must for children's lit

Reading Children's Literature is an engaging and well written look at the history and complexity of children's literature. It covers fairy tales, poetry, picture books, nonfiction, adventure, fantasy, and much more, with especially interesting chapters on representations of race and gender and on controversies surrounding censorship. What really sets this book apart is its research and thoroughness -- Hintz and Tribunella cover a great deal of ground but their treatment never feels cursory. The discussion questions, activities, and suggested readings at the end of each chapter will be useful for even seasoned teachers of children's lit. The photographs are especially wonderful and capture the delight of children's literature while illustrating salient points.

Great for Reading OK for Teaching

The critical introduction is thoughtfully composed through concepts and language that invite upper level undergraduates into some early analytical conversations about children's literature. I was sorely dissatisfied with the teaching ideas, but think that otherwise the text is fantastic. I suggest coupling it with Leland, Lewison & Harste's Teaching Children's Literature: It's Critical! for a perfect "textbook" set.

Despite lacking any experience with motorcycle gangs, Charles Falco infiltrated three of America's deadliest biker gangs: the Vagos, Mongols, and Outlaws. Why all the hate? Snobby book critics.

First off, I read about 4 books per year. Not a lot, but more than the average adult.

Saw this book on the news while watching "The Following". I live in Socal, in the Inland Empire, and I encounter Vagos on a weekly/monthly basis. I think this book was extremely accurate, and entertaining. This is an extremely easy read. Which I believe, Falco was going for, I don't believe he was trying to make a Catcher in the Rye about motorcycle gangs.

So take the hateful reviewers with a grain of salt. For all people who are fascinated by motorcycle gang life, this is a great book. It gives you a really good idea of what undercover work is like as well, extremely stressful!

Many moments while reading this book I found myself laughing out loud or cringing. If you are an avid reader, reading a book a month, don't buy this book. This is a very basic outline of a Rico Case against a motorcycle gang, it's not meant to change your life or bring you into another dimension of serenity. It's a book about gang violence and undercover work.

Let me tell you as an Inland Empire resident who moved from Orange County CA - This level of violence really happens, and it happens right out in the open most of the time. The fact that this gang tried to blow up a police station by re-routing the gas lines into their office shows you how ruthless and crazy these people are. And for that reason - I feel this book was worth the money, and was very entertaining.

I know the reality of this book

So.. This book has its truisms and its falsehoods.. Also a lot of the demeaning behavior depicted in this book are embellished for one but also do not represent even the majority if the club. The majority are regular non tweak era.. Working men with wives or girlfriends... I am the club member portrayed in the book by the name if Bandit... It's funny reading the elaborate eccentric over the top pieces that Charles depicted.. Sorry to say but I knew him truthfully. Although he was likely stressed with the situation of the case he truthfully enjoyed a lot. Like the womanizing is not something he didn't partial in. Or the meth etc... In the book he begs for live and acceptance from the reader by making himself out an angel. But he left out plenty about himself. If she had any sense if duty for community or law enforcement it was only due to his situation. He paints himself in a golden light so as to not have to see his earned federal prison time and to make money. He continued further investigations and ratting because I know for fact he truly loved the outlaw biker lifestyle and wanted and enjoyed living it. I read this and laugh at many parts but the truth is every org has good brothers and bad apples. I am a good person, a family man, and I work 70 hrs a week. I don't sell drugs or beat my fiancé. I am a great father to my 2 year ild daughter and am living my life right. But to be honest while active in the club you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who could say that I ever fought web I didn't have to. There were many who knew me as standup dude who lived by the club motto. "I gave what I got". As in I gave respect when given to me. And dealt disrespect ten fold when given to me. But I never looked for it and was often very cordial to "civilians"

This book is very good, one of the best on the subject, but the Kindle download version of this is missing the excellent photos the regular book store version has, and it stinks. They should tell you it doesn't include the photos. Don't bother with the Kindle download of this, get the regular book version of it instead or you'll be missing out on the good photos that go with it.

About the Author

C.C. Hunter is the author of the young adult fantasy series Shadow Falls, including Born at Midnight. She grew up in Alabama, where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and regularly rescued potential princes, in the form of Alabama bullfrogs, from her brothers. Today, she's still fascinated with lightning bugs, mostly wears shoes, but has turned her focus to rescuing mammals. She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. When she's not writing, she's reading, spending time with her family, or shooting things--with a camera, not a gun.

C.C. Hunter is a pseudonym. Her real name is Christie Craig and she also writes humorous romantic suspense romance novels.

Chapter One

“You have to stop it, Kylie. You have to. Or this will happen to someone you love.”
The spirit’s ominous words flowed from behind Kylie Galen and mingled with the crackle and pop of the huge bonfire about fifty feet to her right. The frigid pocket of air announced the spirit’s presence loud and clear, even if the words were only for Kylie’s ears and not for the thirty other Shadow Falls campers standing in the ceremonial circle.
Miranda stood by Kylie in the people chain, completely unaware of the ghost, and gripped Kylie’s hand tighter. “This is so cool,” Miranda muttered, and looked across the circle at Della.
Miranda and Della were not only Kylie’s closest friends, but also her cabin mates.
“We give thanks for this offering.” Chris, or Christopher as he referred to himself tonight, stood in the middle of the circle and raised the sacred goblet up to the dark sky as he blessed its contents.
“You have to stop it,” the spirit whispered over Kylie’s shoulder again, hindering her concentration on the ritual.
Closing her eyes, Kylie envisioned the spirit the way she had appeared to her several times now—mid-thirties, long dark hair and wearing a white gown—a gown covered in blood.
Frustration bounced around Kylie’s already tightened gut. How many times had she pleaded with this spirit to explain, to tell her who, what, when, where, and why? Only to have the dead woman repeat the same warning.
Long story short, ghosts just coming out of the closet sucked at communication. Probably as bad as beginner ghost whisperers sucked at getting them to communicate. Kylie’s only option was to wait until the ghost could somehow explain her warning. Now, however, wasn’t the optimal time.
I’m kind of busy right now. So unless you can explain in detail, can we chat later? The words formed in Kylie’s mind, hoping the ghost could read her thoughts. Thankfully, the chill running down Kylie’s spine evaporated and the night’s heat returned—Texas heat, muggy, thick, and hot, even without the bonfire.
Thank you. Kylie tried to relax, but the tension in her shoulders remained knotted. And for a good reason. Tonight’s ceremonial event, sort of a show-and-tell, was another first in her life.
A life that was so much simpler before she knew she wasn’t all human. Of course, it would help if she could identify her non-human side. Unfortunately the only person who knew the answer was Daniel Brighten, her real dad. She hadn’t known he existed until he’d paid a visit to her a little over a month ago. And he’d obviously decided to let Kylie deal with her identity crisis all on her own.
He seldom visited anymore, bringing a whole new meaning to the term deadbeat dad. Yup, Daniel was dead—died before she was born. Kylie wasn’t sure if they offered parenting classes in the hereafter, but she was tempted to suggest he find out. Because now, when he did drop by, she would catch him watching her and just when she started to ask him a question, he’d fade away, leaving only a cold chill and her unanswered questions.
“Okay,” Chris said. “Release your hands, clear your mind, but whatever you do, do not break the circle.”
Kylie, along with the crowd, followed his directions. Yet as she released her hands, Kylie’s mind refused to clear. A whisper of wind picked up a few strands of her long, blond hair and scattered it across her face. She brushed it behind her ear.
Was her deadbeat dad afraid she was going to ask for sex advice or something? That always had her mom disappearing from a room—running around in search of another give-this-to-your-teen pamphlet. Not that Kylie had actually asked her mom for sex advice. Honestly, she was the last person Kylie would go to for that kind of advice.
Why, the mere mention of her being interested in a boy sent her mom into a panic as the letters S-E-X practically flashed in her mom’s eyes. Thankfully, since Kylie had been shipped off to Shadow Falls Camp, the supply of sex-related pamphlets had declined.
Who knew what she’d missed this last month? There might have been a few STDs discovered that she didn’t know about. No doubt her mom was stockpiling them for when Kylie went home for a visit in three weeks. A visit she wasn’t looking forward to, either. Sure, she and her mom had sort of mended their not-so-good relationship since her mom had confessed about Daniel being her real dad. But the new mother-daughter bond felt so fragile.
Kylie couldn’t help but wonder if their relationship wasn’t too delicate to actually spend more than a few hours together. What if she went home and found things really hadn’t changed? What if the distance between her and her mom still existed? And what about things with Tom Galen, the man Kylie had perceived to be her real dad all her life, the man who had walked out on her mom and her for a girl only a few years older than Kylie? Kylie had been mortified at seeing him sucking face with his way-too-young assistant. So much so, she hadn’t even told him.
A late-night breeze brought the smoke from the roaring bonfire into her face. She blinked the sting from her eyes, but didn’t dare step out of the circle. As Della had explained, to do that would have shown a lack of respect to the vampire culture.
“Clear your mind,” Chris repeated, and handed the goblet to a camper on the other side of the circle.
Closing her eyes, Kylie tried again to follow Chris’s directions, but then heard the sound of falling water. Jerking her eyes open, she looked toward the woods. Was the waterfall that close? Ever since Kylie had learned about the legend of the death angels at the falls, she felt driven to go there. Not that she longed to come face-to-face with any death angels. She had her hands full dealing with ghosts. But she couldn’t kick the feeling that the falls called her.
“Are you ready?” Miranda leaned in and whispered, “It’s getting closer.”
Ready for what? was Kylie’s first thought. Then she remembered.
Was Miranda freaking kidding?
Kylie stared at the communal goblet being passed around the circle. Her breath caught when she realized it was only ten people away from being placed in her hand. Drawing in a deep smoke-scented gulp of air, she tried not to look disgusted.
Tried. But the thought of taking a sip from a container after everyone had smacked their lips on the rim landed somewhere between gross and nauseating in her mind, but for sure the biggest yuck factor was the blood.
Watching Della consume her daily nutrition had gotten easier this last month. Heck, Kylie had even donated a pint to the cause—supernaturals did that sort of thing for their vampire friends. But having to taste the life-sustaining substance was a different matter altogether.
“I know it’s sickening. Just pretend it’s tomato juice,” Miranda whispered to their friend Helen standing on the other side of her. Not that whispering helped in this crowd.
Kylie looked across the circle of supernatural campers, their faces cast in firelit shadows from the bonfire. She spotted Della, frowning in their direction and her eyes glowing a pissed-off gold color. Her acute hearing was only one of her gifts. No doubt Della would call Miranda on her “sickening” remark later. Which basically meant Kylie would have to convince the two of them not to murder each other. How two people could be friends and fight so much was beyond her. Playing peacemaker between the two was a full-time job.
She watched another camper raise the goblet to her lips. Knowing how much this meant to Della, Kylie mentally prepared herself to accept the glass and take a sip of blood without barfing. Not that it stopped Kylie’s stomach from wanting to rebel.
Gotta do this. Gotta do this. For Della’s sake.
Maybe you’ll even like how blood tastes, Della had said earlier. Wouldn’t it be cool if you turned out to be vampire?
Not, Kylie had thought, but wouldn’t dare say it. She supposed being vampire wouldn’t be any worse than being werewolf or shape-shifter. Then again, she remembered Della practically crying when she talked about her ex-boyfriend’s repulsion to her cold body temperature. Kylie preferred to stay at her own temperature, thank you very much. And the thought of existing on a diet that mainly consisted of blood…? Well, Kylie seldom even ate red meat, and when she did … cook that cow, please.
While Holiday, the camp leader and Kylie’s mentor, had said it was unlikely for Kylie to start exhibiting any huge metaphysical changes, Holiday had also said anything was possible. Truth was, Holiday—who was full fairy—couldn’t tell Kylie what her future held, because Kylie was an anomaly.
And Kylie hated being an anomaly.
She’d never fit in the human world, and damn it if she wasn’t a misfit here, as well. Not that the other campers didn’t accept her. Nope, she felt closer to these supernaturals than she did human teens. Well, she did as soon as she learned that no one here was dying to have her for lunch. Why, Della and Miranda were now her two major best friends—there wasn’t anything she couldn’t or wouldn’t share with them. The blood donation pretty much proved that fact.
Okay, there was one thing Kylie couldn’t share with her two best friends. Ghosts. Most supernaturals had a thing about ghosts. Not that Kylie herself didn’t have a thing about them. But it didn’t stop the pesky phantoms from regularly popping in for visits.

In love with Shadow Falls!!!

So let me start by stating that I absolutely love this series!!! Now that I know CC Hunter also writes under Christie Craig I completely understand why I adore these books so much, I LOVE her!!! I read Born at Midnight because of the price but was pulled in to the teen paranormal drama and was absolutely dying to read Awake at Dawn!!! This sequel picks up with at Camp SHadow Falls with Kylie Galen and the gang learning to cope with their paranormal existence and learn to coexist with other species peacefully. Kylie still has no idea which paranormal category she falls under but she does realize that her ability to see ghosts is not as easy as it would appear, being that ghosts are not the best communicators. She is also undergoing some physical changes that cause Holiday to think she may be a certain type of specie, which type I will not say because I do not believe in spoilers!!! Her love triangle is still fully active as she deals with Lucas, her werewolf love, gone from camp after he mysteriously left without a word with Fredericka, his ex a she-wolf who would do anything to get him back. And then there is Derek, fae, who absolutely adores Kylie and the two get hot and heavy until he senses that she is not quite over Lucas completely. She is forced to decide which one she wants to be with, discover what she truly is, find out who her dead father's real parents are so she can possibly discover the paranormal DNA she has, and convince her mom to allow her to attend the boarding school that the camp is now opening. And to make matters worse....Lucas comes back in the end, and he is very much ready to pick up where they left off!!! Plus Holiday has a little love tryst of her own with Burnett, a vampire who also works for the paranormal section of the government. Miranda, Kylie's witch roommate, falls into a little love triangle of her own, and Della begins to wonder if when she turned into full vamp, she may have actually went on a killing spree!!! Read this sequel!!! There are so many twists and turns and subplots, I read it all in 4 hours because I couldn't put it down!!!!! I am already dying for more!!!

I love this series!

First Impressions: Born at Midnight, the first book in the Shadow Falls series was AMAZING! It was, and still is, one of my favorites when it was released. I was super happy when I got my hand on Awake at Dawn, and I knew I was going to fly right through it so I could find out what was going to happen. I really recommend starting to read this series if you haven't already because the author is very talented and I don't think you will disappointed in the least.

First 50 Pages: This second book picks up right where the first left off. The plot seemed to moved at the same speed as the first book, which I felt fairly comfortable with. I devoured this book, and I hate to give too much of the story away in case you have not started to read this series yet. That is one bad thing I dislike about reviewing sequels or books in a series. I hate the spoilers I'm about to give!

Plot: Awake at Dawn Picks up right where Born at Midnight left off. Kylie still has no clue what exactly she is and the clock is ticking for her to find out in time to be able to save herself. This book is basically about Kylies journey to self discovery with a bit of action and romance thrown in the mix. Her powers are starting to grow rapidly, and I have a feeling that in the next book they are going to be needed tremendously.

I'll admit that this series is my guilty pleasure! It's just so quirky and entertaining. You have to love, love triangles to be able to get into these books. There was a ton of fun drama happening that made the mood a little bit lighter then it would have been otherwise. There are also its serious moments, like when Kylie is trying to explain all of her emotions about how she feels towards the situations she is stuck in and how she feels about Lucus and Derek.

This book has the same cast of characters that it did in the first novel. There is Kylie's two friends, vampire Della, who is as moody as they come, and Miranda the witch, the loyal friend. Let's not forget the boys, Lucus and Derek. I'll also admit that I couldn't get enough of Lucus! Although Derek is super cute too, for a fairy! But I prefer the hot werewolf myself! Can you guess where the love triangle comes into play?

Final Thoughts: This series is addicting! It is just so much fun and enjoyable to read and so very difficult to put back down once you start. If you enjoy the paranormal and don't mind love triangles, you should definitely check these books out. I know that love triangles are getting old, but this series just makes them so much fun! That is the only word that keeps coming to mind, fun! I can't wait for the next book!

Awesome read for teens!

I am so happy I found this series!! I am officially beyond hooked and well into addicted!! I need to get to the next book ASAP!

Kylie is a really great character! While she is a teenager she is not the typical overly angsty whiny sort you often encounter in YA books. She has her down moments but nothing where I felt like skipping ahead!

I am so torn in the whole love triangle. I really like both guys and am having trouble picking one to root for, I can really empathize with her! Loved the scene where she gets her, um, growth spurt! LOL

And when we going to discover what she is? I have ideas but nothing definite. I am desperate to know!

All the characters are wonderfully engaging and the story is beautifully paced. I never had a moment where I was bored or wanted to stop reading. Really refreshing series with a creative well thought out world.
