About the Author

Short fiction has always been problematic for me. Even the best anthologies sometimes fail to hold my interest for very long. In addition, there's the long-argued dilemma of how to review an anthology. Should the book be reviewed as a single entity or should each story be reviewed separately? What makes matters infinitely worse for me is that five of the last seven books I've received for review are short story anthologies. Guess it's time to make up my mind... or not.

So, zombies, right? What could possibly be wrong with a short story anthology featuring zombies? In the case of 21st Century Dead? Absolutely nothing! Infinitely better is that Chris Golden has brought together some of the most unusual and interesting "zombie" stories ever written. This is not your usual faire of shambling undead but a strange mixture of victims, weirdoes, and the most maladjusted walkers and non-zombie zombies in the history of all lifeless, ambling brain-eaters.

The first three stories, for instance, do not fit any "normal" zombie mold. Chelsea Cain's Why Mothers Let Their Babies Watch Television is a lesson in why zombie babies should be allowed to watch TV. In Carousel by Orson Scott Card we are given a new perspective by a post-living person. ("It's all poop!") And when the dead are suddenly resurrected a discussion with God at the Carousel puts an end to all the suffering. In Reality Bites by S. G. Browne we see Reality TV with a twist. The Zombie Jersey Shore. The Amazing Zombie Race. American Zombie Idol. What if a TV exec discovered a rationalizing, lucid, talking zombie? Now that would be quite the Reality Bite...

Given the unique and constructive names given to the zombies in the various stories here (Infects, NODS, and Dead Ones, among others) and how zombie-ism is spread (a virus, drugs, and the apocalypse) we begin to see that the 21st Century Dead is not your typical shambling zombie anthology. I should also mention that the stories are overloaded with social media, TV, Hollywood, and advertising. In that sense alone this anthology truly represents the 21st Century Dead.

Fantastic anthology

I won this book as a early reviewer through Goodreads, and I am so glad! What a great anthology. Often times I am disappointed in anthologies as I enjoy only half of the stories, but with this one there were no weaknesses. "Biters" was a excellent choice to begin the journey! "Down and Out in Dead Town" was a masterful short piece that touched your sentiments and reminded me of the homeless in our urban city. I did not want "Ghost Dog and Pup " to end. "Tender as Teeth" was delicious, and "Parasite" finishes the anthology with a fantastic apocalyptic last line. Wonderfully edited, fantastic stories and a book I will hold onto to read over again.

different takes on the Zombie lore. I like the fact
that some of the stories were set in the not too distant future as well as situations topical with
today's environment and world-view.

Recently released from prison, Karima Thomas finds herself back in court facing new charges when an unknown assailant stabs her mother. With no possible leads, Karima finds herself depending on the very person who led her to capture in the first place, Captain Kevin Lynch. While Kevin Lynch has vowed to serve and protect, for some reason Karima seems to have a special hold over him. While he's denied that it's anything more than his incessant need to solve the case, he finds himself having to decide between helping Karima or being there for his family.

The city of Philly is under attack and things will be fine once all of the Thomas family secrets have been revealed and they've all been forced to pay for all of the mayhem they have caused. Deathbed confessions and collaborating politicians leave Karima standing in an unknown line of fire.

Troy Williams is looking to reconnect with the long forgotten branches of his politically laced family tree. While there won't be any happy reunions or hopes for keeping in touch, Troy has a list of reasons why the people who've wronged him must suffer.

Karima and Troy find themselves scouring the city of Philly for PAYBACK. Who will be on top?

PAYBACK THE RETURN OF C.R.E.A.M, although a sequel, has a strong enough storyline with new characters that makes for an intriguing read. I do hope that Solomon Jones will continue with his interesting characters soon.

wild satirical sequel

Municipal Court of Philadelphia Judge Myra Weaks is ruling whether Karima "Cream" Thomas must stand trial for the death of her boyfriend, Duane Faision (see C.R.E.A.M.). As the Judge states there is efficient evidence for Ms. Thomas to stand trial for murder and the accused insists an accident during a shoot out occurred, a scream is heard by all inside the courtroom by someone outside.

Karima, worried about her mom's reaction to the recent tragic events, recognizes the voice and rushes out to the hallway. There she finds her mother Sharon Thomas dying from a puncture wound in her neck; the Ice Pick serial killer has struck. Karima vows to avenge her mom's death. However, as the killer goes on a rampage murdering anyone he had the slightest grudge with, Karima follows his icy blood trail looking for a confrontation.

This is a wild satirical sequel starring a kick butt African-American heroine who takes no prisoners as shown by the opening argument between her and the Judge over the merit of her late drug dealing boyfriend and never slows down as Cream takes readers on a tour of the city. The story line is fast-paced and filled with action while the audience anticipates a final grudge match winner takes all between the diabolically brilliant profiling Ice Pick killer and the heroine, mindful of Cleopatra Jones.

Gotta' be a part 3

The sequel is definitely a page turner. Much like "Ride or Die" you are looking for the main characters to break through with profundity, but the creativeness of Mr. Jones will not allow it. There were many twists and turns and I must admit I did not like where you were taking Lynch in reference to the romantic connection with Karima. Thanks for saving the day for marriage and faithfulness. I would have lost respect for Lynch. Why couldn't Karmina and Troy have a civil conversation first before continuing the mayhem? I am glad however that she slipped out of this one. Don't take too long to write part three. I have to know how she and Skeet made out, especially since he replaces her blood brother. Lynch and his family need some excitement and who knows, maybe Jamal and Keisha will show up in this one.

The Occasional Enemies Part

Daughter Francesca and I are very close, but that doesn’t mean we don’t fight.

On the contrary, it means we do.

So if you’re currently fighting with your daughter, or merely fussing from time to time, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s start with the notion that the no-fighting model isn’t the best for mother-daughter relations. I know so many women who feel bad, guilty, or inferior because they fight with their daughters, and they needn’t. To them, and to you, I say, flip it.

What?

Flip that notion on its head. If you fight with your daughter, you raised her to think independently from you, and to voice her own views.

Yay!

You’re a great mother. Know why?

Because the world doesn’t reward the timid. Especially if they have ovaries.

In my opinion, conflict between mother and daughter is normal and good. Not only that, it’s love. I say this not as a social scientist, which I’m not, but as a real-life mother, which I so am. So if your daughter is fighting with you, here’s the good and bad news:

The good news is you raised her right.

The bad is you have a headache.

Forever.

Just kidding.

Francesca and I are best friends, but at times, we’re at odds. Enemies, only momentarily. Like most mothers and daughters, we’re so attuned to each other’s words and gestures that even the arching of an eyebrow can convey deep meaning.

If somebody plucks, we’re in trouble.

We never have really huge fights, but we have car rides to New York that can feel as if they last cross-country.

Wars of words.

We go on and on, each replying to the other, swept along in a girl vortex of words, during which we parse every nuance of every syllable, with special attention to tone.

Tone is the kryptonite of mother-daughter relationships.

As in, “I don’t like your tone.”

Also, “Don’t use that tone with me.”

And the ever-popular, “It wasn’t what you said, it was your tone.”

It was ever thus. Francesca and I got along great from the time she came out of the egg, and I used to tell her that she wasn’t allowed to whine, but she could argue with me. In other words, make her case for whatever she wanted.

Never mind that she was three at the time.

Oddly, this turned out great. She was the Perry Mason of toddlers, and more often than not, she was right. Or she felt completely heard, which was often enough for kiddie satisfaction. She argued for punch balls from the gift shop at the zoo, dessert before dinner if she ate all her dinner, and the wearing of Cinderella outfits on an almost daily basis, complete with tiara.

What girl doesn’t want a tiara?

Another thing I did when she was little was to let her vent. I had no idea how I came upon this idea, but I used to give her the chance to say anything she wanted to me, without interruption, for a full minute.

And I mean, anything.

She was even permitted to curse at me, though she didn’t know any profanity at that age. It got only as rude as “butt face.”

Ouch?

She’s still permitted to argue with me and vent her anger. And she accords me the same permission. Even though we’re writing books together and we adore each other, we can still get mad at each other. And that valve releases the pressure from the combustible engine that is the mother-daughter relationship.

It’s just hot air, anyway.

Bottom line, we’re close, so we fight, and the converse is also true. The conflict strengthens us, because it’s honesty, hard-earned.

And the more honest we are with each other, the closer we are. You’ll see exactly what I mean, in the pages that follow.

Lisa (and Francesca) Delight Once Again

I own the previous two books of Lisa's "adventures", and now this one, and all have been delightful reads. If you are a fan of Lisa's Sunday newspaper column, you know what I mean. Lisa, and Francesca, write about the things that happen to most women but we are embarrassed or reluctant to talk about. Not so Lisa and daughter...and in doing so, they make us feel that they're okay and we're okay just as we are, flaws, mistakes and everything in between. The book also contains some poignant stories that will tug at your heartstrings because we can all relate, such as losing a beloved pet. No matter what your age, you will enjoy this book.

Looking at Serious Issues in a Humorous Way

Everyone knows Lisa's courtroom thrillers but she is also an essayist and writes for the Philadelphia Enquirer. Once a year, she and her daughter Francesca publish a book of their essays and every year I wait patiently for the next installment. They are real life stories of mother and daughter and I cannot help but to laugh my way through them.

Growing up is not easy, whether you are the mother or daughter, but the combinations of parent/child, mother/daughter, granddaughter/grandmother, each have their insights and pitfalls. Lisa appears to be the meat that holds these sandwiches together and her humorous insight is bother endearing and laugh aloud funny.

I love checking in with this mother daughter team to relive what I have already been through or to prepare for the future challenges that I know I will face with an adult child. I would not say that Francesca is dependent on her mother, more along the lines that Lisa is dependent on her mature responsible child to help her through the normal tasks that come up - like reading boxes and ingredients or when to call the vet or tree trimming company.

This book takes on serious issues too, but in a humorous way. Life is challenging and if you are lucky enough to have a loving family that accepts your foibles, then you are all the better off because of it.

Humor fell flat for me

I've tried to read a few of Scottoline's mysteries in the past -- and I know she is well loved by many readers of that genre -- but I've always struggled getting into her books. I figured I would try this one because it was non-fiction, allowing me to see a different side to her, and I figured there might be some laughs here to share with my own mother. I don't know... the humor just struck me as pretty forced. I don't think I honestly laughed once. In fact, some parts had me really cringing and thinking it would be difficult for me to like Lisa as a person. Much of my reading of this just had me thinking "#whitepeopleproblems".

For one thing, she laughingly writes about talking with her daughter while clipping her toenails in the kitchen. Do you not serve / prepare food in there, woman?! Yuck! SO grossed out by that! But that wasn't the biggie for me. The big issue for me is how she talks about how she speaks to customer service reps & retail staff -- calling a credit card company bitching about her APR (which she could have easily been aware of had she looked at her paperwork, I'm sure) busting out the word "usurious" -- that just struck me as pretentious right there -- or how she seems to take pride in debasing holiday staff with harshly sarcastic comments when they are honestly just doing their job. I feel for these workers because I've had those jobs and I've had customers much like the way Lisa describes herself in these situations -- though she sees nothing wrong with how she talks to them. It's more of a "Who's with me!" tone. Not me, Lisa, not me.

It wasn't all a loss for me though, I did enjoy the stories about their pets (heartbreaking though they were) -- their reminisces about their retrievers and Francesca's horse. The part about their Golden, Angie is especially a heartstrings-tugger. I also enjoyed Francesca's memories of first experiencing a lunar eclipse and Lisa's story about returning to Italy to the town where her ancestors originated from, Ascoli-Piceno.

Solid fans of Lisa's work will probably appreciate this, but it was a no for me.

I got this for an English 101 class. It has 13 or 14 chapters on different kinds of writing, like description, process analysis, compare and contrast, etc. To complement each section, about 5 essays by professional writers appear with study questions you help you get the most out of each essay, both in content and in studying the writing craft. Good book, if you can get a decent price on it.

My daughter started collecting this series when it first came out.

We needed this book to finish her collection. Having a series that kept her interested, I feel played a part in her reading two grades above the average. (She was a fourth grader reading at a 6th grade level) I also bought her the 4 small wind dancer toys, (they were a bit spendy) but are now on display with her books until she decides to act out what she's read.

I had bought the Breyer Wind Dancer horses along with the first storybook for our 6-year old granddaughter in 2012. She so enjoyed the first book that she asked if there were anymore. She loves acting out the story as she reads the story.

Warning: Do not read this book while hungry

Before I get to my review proper, I must say that this author does a fantastic job of describing food. The main character Zoe is a trained chef and the meals she creates are just...well...wow...even her oatmeal sounds blissful.

This book follows Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor and Rainshadow Road (Friday Harbor), books that tell the stories of the very dysfunctional Nolan brothers. This book actually runs in a concurrent timeline with Rainshadow Road so you get glimpses of Lucy and Sam's romance in progress tangentially from Alex's perspective.

In this one we get Alex's story. While all the Nolan siblings were affected by their parents' alcoholism, Alex got the brunt of it because he was the youngest and was still living at home when his parents spiraled relentlessly downward in the grip of their disease. The glimpses we had of Alex in the previous books showed that he was the most cynical, most damaged brother of all three. He is just getting out of a disastrous marriage, he is broke, unhappy, alcoholic and still living the scars of his childhood. And what is worse, he just doesn't care.

Until he starts being haunted by a ghost. A real live -- well, make that dead -- ghost. At first the ghost, a young WWII fighter pilot, is stuck in the house that Sam (Alex's brother) is remodeling for his Vineyard. But when he meets Alex, he becomes tethered to Alex and is forced to follow along witness Alex's destructive lifestyle. It is obvious he is attached to Alex for a reason. Part of the story is learning why.

In the meantime, Alex is rehabbing a house for Zoe and her grandmother. It brings him into contact a lot with Zoe who is sweet and generous and loving. Alex wants to run as fr away from Zoe as he can. Zoe however is drawn toward the dark brooding man.

There is so much to like in this book. I thought the author did an excellent job of creating dynamic characters especially with Alex and Zoe. She went beyond the typical tortured hero and healing-woman tropes and gave both main characters lovely depth and surprising layers. Zoe's own background is filled in and is a little sad and a little happy. I am glad that the author did not go the easy route in how she presented the troubled relationship between Zoe and her father. It felt realistic. I also thought that Alex's issue were also presented realistically without feeling too dramatic. In the earlier books his darker personality stood out and I am glad that the author did not temper it here.

I was also very gratified with how much information on different things were presented in this book but did not sound like you were being lectured at or that she was trying to impress us with how much research she had done on a subject. There were wonderful descriptive moments of Alex's craftsmanship as a carpenter as he is doing work on the various houses that made me feel as if I simply dropped in from time to time to watch him work. There are of course the fantastic and mouth watering descriptions of the meals that Zoe cooks and the blissed out reactions of people as they describe how the food tastes to them. I am still thinking about that oatmeal and I don't even like oatmeal.

And like the other books in the series this book dabbles in a little whimsical magic. There is a ghost who is there to bicker with Alex. But also Zoe's food itself has a hint of magic about it. Not so blatant as say, Like Water For Chocolate (Mass Market Paperback), but somewhat reminiscent. Her food makes people...feel things.

Most of all this is just a plain old good story. I can't tell you how many books I picked up and put down in the past weeks because nothing captured me. This book immediately hooked me and I gobbled it down quickly like one of Zoe's muffins.

I miss the Kleypas magic!

Lisa Kleypas has written some of the most beautiful historical romance books ever. She has written some fairly decent contemporary ones as well, but none as ordinary as The Friday Harbor series. Before I go deeper into the review, if this is your first Lisa Kleypas novel, please try her previous books like The Wallflower series to experience her true magic! This book is the third in the series and is the story of Alex and Zoe. The characters are well developed, the story flows nicely and the author certainly has a way of telling a lovely story. So what is the problem you ask? While reading this book, I felt none of the emotions that I usually feel while reading her past books. This was a simple love story but where was the passion, tenderness, angst and finally the romance? Another gripe I had was that this story is happening at the same time as the previous one where Sam and Lucy are falling in love, yet there was zero interaction between Lucy and Zoe. Also, we are given a almost 70 page summary of the previous book which was downright boring and unnecessary. I'm also not a fan of the paranormal aspect in this book and while the first book only had hints of it, this one was mostly about it. This took away from the romance and I honestly felt cheated at the end of the book. If Sam was portrayed as the most damaged one, there was nothing earth-shattering about the way he changes himself and falls in love with Zoe. In this Kindle age, there are so many talented authors (Marie Force for one and also Kristen Ashley) out there giving you more bang for your buck so I certainly don't get the price set for this book. Given this pricing, I would seriously recommend getting it from the library. While I''m not a fan of this series, I will still wait for the last one called The Crystal Cove, and hope she brings back her magic for all her fans!

The Ghost and the Alcoholic

This was a fast and fairly enjoyable read that was saved from being a dud by Kleypas's experienced romance writing skills. So I liked this, although there were many reasons for me not to.

Here's why I shouldn't have liked it:

1) There's a ghost. I dislike ghosts or anything paranormal in my romances.

2) There's food (and lots of it), here used somewhat as a healing power. It's not a unique theme. Lots of contemporary romances (see Louisa Edwards' books, for example) have it and if I really want to know how to prepare yummy food, I'll just watch the Food Channel.

3) There's an older lady suffering strokes and in her decline, mentally and physically. I felt that my feelings were being manipulated with this aspect.

4) There's a lot of filler about remodeling and construction. For that I can watch HGTV or "This Old House".

5) There is that overused emotional-constipation trope: "Don't love me. I'm incapable/unworthy of love".

But in spite of all this, it was a very readable romance. This is the third Nolan brother's book. The Nolan brothers' parents were both alcoholics so they had a very dysfunctional, unhappy childhood. Alex, the youngest, seems to be the most troubled of his siblings. He's incapable of relating well to others, his marriage was unsuccessful, he's an alcoholic himself and is, just in general, an emotional mess.

One thing that I seem to have missed in my reading of this and the other books is why Alex's past has turned him into a much bigger emotional wreck than the other two brothers. But troubled he is. Alex has closed himself off from everyone who could possibly want to help or befriend him. That's where the ghost comes in. Seems Alex's best relationship ultimately turns out to be with this ghost, who even acts as his AA support in his attempts to dry out.

Zoe, the heroine here, is friend to Lucy (of Rainshadow Road (Friday Harbor) and friend and cousin of Justine, whom we met in that previous novel and who will have her story in Crystal Cove. Zoe appears to be the least magical of the three (although we haven't yet been introduced to Justine's powers). She's quite the cook and her cooking may just have a bit of a restorative, healing power.

Zoe's grandmother comes into the story when she suffers a series of strokes and needs to move in with Zoe. So a cottage at Dream Lake will need to be updated and customized. That's where Alex, as carpenter/remodeler, begins his interactions with Zoe. He, of course, is rough, gruff, unpleasant and a boor and Zoe is uncomplainingly upbeat, cheerful and almost too sweet and forgiving. She has two boors in her life, Alex and her father, and manages to be civil to both.

And the ghost? It takes us (and the ghost himself) a long time to find out who he is, but suffice it to say there's a connection with the grandmother. Eventually all things come full circle and life/love goes on and the requisite happy ending shows up, albeit with a few bittersweet moments.

There are some very touching scenes in the book. One excellent one is the day after Alex decides to go cold turkey and, a basket case, shows up at Zoe's kitchen at breakfast time. There are more poignant moments, but also some where I felt manipulated emotionally rather than touched emotionally. So I would say this is worth the read because the writing is good, but for me it had too many predictable elements and overused ideas.

Loved the Adventure Parts

I was a little concerned over the first third of this book, as it seemed to be more memoir-style ruminations on failed marriage and finding new love than about kayak adventure, but I stuck with it. I'm glad I did. Once the race begins and Richey spends more time telling us about his adventure, as well as personal and historical anecdotes about the areas he traverses, the book became much more exciting. I still found myself skimming the short chapters that seemed written directly for the benefit of his new love, but that's just me. Other readers might find it heartwarming, it just isn't my thing. I think if there were less of that I would give the book another star or two, but that's just my preference. The book I wanted to read wasn't necessarily the one Richey wanted to write, and there really isn't anything wrong at all with what he delivered. There was still plenty here for me to enjoy anyway, and it definitely makes me want to explore Florida.

Amazing Race, Amazing Book

Last night, I read this book about a 1,200-mile boat race around Florida without putting it down. First of all, I love the man against nature theme. The author, Warren Richey, is one cool-headed, thoughtful and courageous guy. Through tides, wild waves, dangerous water-dwelling beings, sun, darkness, exhaustion and fear, Richey comes as close as one can to the rhythm of nature and survive. All day I've been thinking about how on one of the last nights of this crazy race, he navigates the currents at the mouth of the Sewanee River only to plunge his sea kayak--in the utter dark--into the breaking waves of a stormy Gulf of Mexico. What guts and what an adventure! I enjoyed "experiencing" the watery geography (and history) of Florida, not the one we usually visit, but the seas, rivers, creeks and streams, even the oily, concrete-walled waters of the Intercoastal. I came away knowing the swamps, the mud, the uninhabited islands and the occasional manicured estate lawn where Richey hung his hammock, or fell asleep for a few hours after chomping down some food, somehow still able to distinguish reality from his nightmares. But this journey is far more than man against nature, it is the story of a deeply romantic man finding his sea legs after a failed marriage. He's ready to try marriage again, and in fact is dating the woman of his dreams, but has never let her know. Can he make it to the finish line, let alone win the race? Can he work through the pain and disappointment of one marriage to propose another? This book is a great ride all the way.

Fast moving, funny and thought provoking

Just finished Without a Paddle -- in a day -- could not put it down. My S.E. Fla kayak club has paddled many of the areas mentioned and it's fun seeing them through Warren's eyes. Have not had so many laughs reading a book in a long time. Even though I paddle frequently, there is no way I could possibly do the race. But, by Warren's laying out the different portions of the trip, my friends and I realize that we could do it in bits and pieces.
