Death and the Girl He Loves, by Darynda Jones

From Darynda Jones, the New York Times bestselling author of Death and the Girl Next Door and Death, Doom & Detention, comes Death and the Girl He Loves, the exciting third book in her new young adult series Darklight

The fate of the world is not something a girl wants on her shoulders, and that is especially true for Lorelei McAlister. Unfortunately for her, that is exactly where the world's fate has decided to take up residence. Lorelei has seen firsthand the horrors that lie beneath our everyday world. And those horrors are getting her friends killed. Because of this, she agrees to leave the sanctity of her hometown and is sent to a different world entirely. A boarding school. But even here she is being watched. Someone knows what she is. What she carries inside her soul. And on top of that she's seeing visions. This is nothing new for Lorelei. But these visions are something more: death, destruction, and the end of the world. Lorelei must face the fact that there are people who want her dead, and no matter where she goes, no matter how far she runs, the lives of her friends and family are in mortal peril. Lucky for her, her friends and family include the handsome Angel of Death, a fiercely protective half-angel, and a ragtag group of loyal supporters who aren't afraid to get a little dirty in the name of fighting pure evil.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Fans of Jones's "Darklight" series (St. Martin's Griffin) will be delighted with this final installment. Lorelei McAlister-destined to stop an impending war between humans and demons and in love with the Angel of Death-adopts an alias, leaves her hometown in New Mexico to protect her loved ones, and takes up residence at a Maine boarding school. While visions are nothing new to to the teen, her latest depict not only people's deaths but the end of the world. Lorelei is also aware that she is being followed by someone who knows her true identity (and that she carries a demon in her soul). The feisty heroine enlists her friends' help (including that of a brooding Nephilim) to fulfill her role as the Prophet, making this story line darker than the previous books'. The characters are more focused, well-developed, and witty in this entry, and the dialogue is quick and fun. Loose ends are tied up somewhat satisfyingly, and the surprise conclusion will not disappoint. Because this novel is confusing for those who have not read the earlier titles, libraries looking to deepen their paranormal romance collections will want to make sure that these are available.—Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI

From Booklist
Bring your orange soda and get ready for the snarkiest apocalypse ever. In this third title in Jones’ fantasy trilogy, Lorelei McAlister has been sent into hiding at an elite boarding school in Maine—as far from the doomsday events in Riley’s Switch, New Mexico as possible. But her visions confirm her worst fears: the world is going to end, and she cannot stop it. So she returns home to make her final stand with her friends and family (can you say, “deus ex machina”?). The book benefits from its trim page count and moves at a brisk pace. Lorelei still indulges in too much hand-wringing, but with the Angel of Death on her side, rapture may be secured. Grades 9-12. --Kara Dean

Watch out world Darynda Jones is taking over and death has never looked so hot!

If you have not picked up the first book Death and the Girl Next Door you are seriously missing out! This 3rd book is just well amazing and is defiantly my favorite! The twists in this story will throw you for a loop and you really have to take a moment to stop and think before you have that AH HA moment! Well at least I did anyway. I personally love a book that makes you think and boy I did not see a few things coming that surprised me. yes there is a little romance and a lot more action from the start of this book then the last ones. Oh and yes you will want to bring tissues because I know I cried a little reading this and was a little devastated till I fished the book to tell you the truth.

Death, Destruction, and the end of the world really sums up what this books is about and all hell breaks loose literately. No matter how far Lorelei runs away she can not escape her destiny or without someone trying to killer her either. If this person succeeds in killing her the world will end and it wont be pretty. Help will come from the most unlikely of places and she must do everything in her power to save the world and everyone she loves.

I don't want to go into too much detail because I want you to go out and read it for yourself. So now off you go read it you know you want to!

A AWESOME AND FUN READ
By Marie Brown
Marie's Tempting Reads Blog's Review:

I give this a FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS...BIG ONES!! I was absolutely and utterly amazed and pleased with the final installment to the Darklight Series. This book was everything I hoped for and more. I couldn't believe how the story twisted from one reality to the next and almost back again, INCREDIBLE! I think I have an even bigger crush on Jared now then I did before reading this story. He is just...perfect. Him and Lorelei, Brooklyn, Cameron, and Casey aka Glitch, are some downright fun and epic characters that will no doubt end up being the ultimate best characters out there, especially in the YA world. I met some new characters and seen some twists that will leave your jaw hanging open, that left me completely stunned in the BEST way. I want to so bad, to say more about this book, but I just can't be that cruel and giveaway the story, so if you haven't picked this book up what are YOU waiting for? I honestly can say this book ROCKED and I can't believe this is the third and final book in this incredible series. I am dying to know though...what will Darynda Jones come up with next?

LITERAL ADDICTION's Review of Death and the Girl He Loves

Death and the Girl He Loves was a nice conclusion to the DARKLIGHT trilogy. Was it my favorite of the series? No. Was it interesting, compelling, and worth recommending. Absolutely!

This installment was quite a bit more somber and serious than the previous two. Since the moment Lorelei found out about her heritage, she has known that she was the key to stopping a war, however, she never knew how, or when, and nobody could (or would) tell her. As the end draws near, Lorelei's stress ratchets ever higher, and her self doubt skyrockets. Add to that the fact that she's literally foreseen the deaths of everyone she loves and is convinced that she just CAN'T stop what's to come, and she's kind of a mess. As she and the rest of the gang try to come up with ways to literally stop the apocalypse and change fate, she systematically works through these complex layers and attempts to find her center. While I enjoyed all of that, found the seriousness necessary, and loved the journey and growth of the characters, I missed the snark and wit. There just weren't as many one liners, snippy comebacks, silly escapades and practical jokes as there were in the previous 2 books, and while my brain understood the necessity for the solemnity, my heart longed for the level of Darynda Jones snark and with that I've come to crave.

I will say this, where the book 'grew up' and swapped fun for seriousness in my opinion, it didn't turn into a stodgy old biddy shut in at home. The level of action was as great, if not better, than the previous 2 books. In addition, the suspense and surprise in this installment were amazing. The plot twist was very unexpected for me, and at first, I was honestly really confused. Then, as it was all laid out and explained, I thought it was kinda brilliant! :)

All in all, Death and the Girl He Loves was an engaging read that I would recommend. I do recommend reading the entire series in order, however, as there is just way too much history for the book to stand well on its own.
