4 x 4 to 6 x 6 grids - Lots of Puzzles for the price
By Ginevera
The 200 Ken Ken puzzles in this edition range from 4 x 4 grids to 6 x 6 grids. Don't be fooled into thinking the 4 x 4s are much easier, though - there are some good puzzlers even with the smaller grids. It's small and light so I bring this with me on my commute.

By Jo
I was at first disappointed with the puzzles. The 4x4 puzzles were extremely easy. Then I got to the 5x5 puzzles. They started out easy, then they got challenging. I am looking forward to the 6x6 puzzles.

My recollection is that I ordered three volumes and did them all. I do these puzzles in the newspaper and on line every day. I'm hoping they are helping to keep my brain from atrophying as I age!

Typhoon: A Novel, by Charles Cumming

Typhoon, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year a Top Ten Thriller of the Year (London Times), further confirms what all the critics around the world have been saying: Charles Cumming is a modern master of the classic espionage thriller, heir to le Carre and Deighton.

In 1997, a few months before the British government is scheduled to return Hong Kong to Chinese rule, Joe Lennox, a brilliant young operative for SIS (MI6), loses both his girlfriend and his first high profile asset – a prominent defector who disappears from a safe house. The girlfriend, the ravishing Isabella Aubert, he lost to Miles Coolidge, a hard-bitten CIA agent; the asset to collusion between his bosses and the CIA.

A decade later, Lennox is back in China, facing his old nemeses. With the CIA plotting to use an Islamic group to destablize China, the SIS seeking to thwart them and his old asset the key to all of this, Lennox, Coolidge, and the girlfriend they shared are hopelessly intertwined in a plot where trust is impossible and truth is unknowable.

Starred Review. In the tradition of old-school espionage fiction, Cumming (The Spanish Game) lets character rather than plot carry this compelling thriller. William Lasker, a second-string agent of the British Secret Intelligence Service, takes on the job of writing a book about a rogue CIA plot against the People's Republic of China. The action, which takes place mainly in Hong Kong and Shanghai, focuses on Joe Lennox, an SIS undercover agent in China, and an older CIA veteran, Miles Coolidge. Several months before the turnover of Hong Kong to Chinese rule in 1997, a defector, Professor Wang Kaixuan, climbs out of the South China Sea and announces he has important secret information. After the professor disappears, Joe slowly learns the defector has become part of Typhoon, a secret CIA plan being run by Miles whose aim is to destabilize China. The conflict between Joe and Miles, both personal and professional, fuels this complex and satisfying novel. (Nov.)

Review

“Typhoon is easy to like. The plot is tight and complex, and the local details are accurate about the three main cities where it is set: Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing.” ―James Fallows, The New York Times Book Review

The Great Game, continued
By M. S. Butch
Charles Cumming's spies are engaged in an endless game of lying. All of them lie to everyone all the time, while they attempt to discern the lies in each other's statements.

Typhoon occurs in two sections, eight years apart. In the first section Joe Lennox, a junior MI6 agent living in Hong Kong just before the handover of that city to China, tries to figure out why a Chinese defector whom he was the first to interview subsequently disappeared. Although his superiors in MI6 and colleagues in the CIA tell him that the defector was a plant, and was sent back to China, Joe believes they are all lying to him.

The second section of the story picks up 8 years later, when Joe is sent by MI6 to Shanghai to spy on his old CIA frenemy, Miles Coolidge. Joe is pleased to do this because, among other things, Miles stole the Love of His (Joe's) Life, aided by some sneaky tricks.

As compared with his earlier novels, Cumming is here working with a larger canvas and at a greater distance from his characters. His focus is politics within China and between China and the West, with emphasis on the dark side of the Chinese economic miracle and the utter pointlessness of the spy game.

The story is narrated, not by Joe Lennox, but by a journalist who works part time for MI6. I think this distance dulled my concern for the characters, especially compared with Alex Milius, the hero of two other Cumming novels. While Joe is a "better" person than Alex, I didn't get close enough to Joe to develop for him the affection I have for Alex. And let's face it -- there's something "off" about a guy who still isn't over a former girlfriend after eight years.

As for the girlfriend, Isabella, being myself a woman who grew up after the '50s, I find her aimlessness annoying rather than endearing. She seems to have no interior life, no interests, and no goals. Really, I thought Joe was well rid of her.

In sum, I always look forward to the next Charles Cumming novel, but I hope it is about Alex.

An interesting premise that falls flat
By J. Mullally
This is an average read that starts out reasonably well, but never really picks up any steam or suspense. The narrative device of Will the journalist writing a book about an incident over a decade in the making tends to make it lumber and be rife with the benefit of hindsight, thus ruining the suspense. In addition, the focus on the love triangle between the two agents and Isabelle gets pretty tedious after a while. The whole Muslim extremists and defector from China angle is too watered down, and the issue of the Hong Kong Handover could have been interesting but was watered down by endless disputes over whether or not Margaret Thatcher, Chris Patten and the Tories were good people. I think history has already answered that one. The worst thing about the book is the ending, where he tries to wrap things up. Again, because of the narrative device of Will the journalist writing the book, we get things from his perspective, and a whole lot of reported speech instead of dialogue, which breaks the cardinal rule of storytelling: "Show, don't tell."
The way he captures life in Hong Kong is well done, but for me, not exactly the best book in the suspense/thriller/espionage genre that I've ever read.

stunning and enjoyable
By J. Johnson
One of the benefits of the end of a world political system with only two major players (US/Soviet Union) is that the multitude of twisted regimes and complex relationships gives a host of new targets for writers of political thrillers to choose from. Charles Cumming's book Typhoon begins in Hong Kong at the time of the turnover to the Chinese and posits a covert operation to destablize China.

Joe Lennox is a bright young star of British Intelligence. He has the opportunity to interview a defector who is promptly snatched from him by Ameican CIA operative Miles Coolidge. Whle he's stealing the defector Coolidge also steals Lennox's girlfriend.

Flash forward 10 years. The Olympics are coming to town. The operation to destabilize China (Typhoon) has been shut down. Or has it? Lennox returns to China and ...
\
The characters are well written, the action well done, the plot (post Bush) is plausable. It's well executed, put you on the edge of your seat and don't put down the book good. Highly recommend

Arrived New As Advertised, Very educational for my course
By Johnny O
What can I say, this book was required for an online course. I have enjoyed learning new things about media history in the U.S. and applying them in my course. I would recommend this book if someone finds their course requires it I would expect they shall learn a few things and find it enjoyable as I have. New condition when it arrived. I'm usually quite gentle on books but the paperback cover starts to roll back on you after use. Nothing abnormal or complaint-worthy as far as I'm concerned.

Required for a class.
By JJ
This book was required for a class on the social aspects of the Media and how it impacts our daily lives. As a textbook I found it very unhelpful and lacking. There are no key-words in the book. I found the information very broad and helpful. I however did not find the authors use of dated, dry satire humorous. A decent read, with some outdated information.

Comprehensive study of media
By Loretta Morelle
In my initial scanning of the book I can see that it covers the subject matter in a very complete manner. I need this book to take an online course required for my 2nd Bachelor's degree in Communications. This book is the one required by my professor and in her judgment is the best for the coursework required because it is comprehensive and invites critical analysis of media past and present.

Must Win: A Season of Survival for a Town and Its Team, by Drew Jubera

Nestled amid cotton, pine, and swamps, the Deep South outpost of Valdosta, Georgia, has long drawn pilgrims from across the country to the home of the Wildcats, the winningest high school football team in America. Christened by national media as "Title Town, USA," Valdosta has thrived on the continuity of dominance: sons still play in front of fathers and grandfathers, creased men in pickups still offer steak dinners as a reward for gridiron glory, and Friday nights in the 11,000-seat stadium known as Death Valley still hold a central role in the town's social fabric.

Now that place is in peril. As much as Valdosta is a romantic symbol of traditional American values, things are changing here just as they are in small towns everywhere. In Must Win, author Drew Jubera goes inside the country's most famous high school football team to chronicle its dramatic 2010 season, a quest by a program that's down but not out to regain past glory for both the team and the town it represents. This town, this school, and these people have been rocked by forces that have hit the entire country, but they're a long way from giving up. They still believe in the power of a game to overcome all.

With a new coach, a new optimism, and a kaleidoscopic cast that includes an aspiring rapper, a beekeeper's son, the best athlete in the state, and the heir to a pro legacy cut short by a crack dealer's bullet, these Wildcats have been given one more chance. Must Win is the American story written across a bright green playing field.

Review

“The ‘winningest' sports bio of 2012.” ―accessAtlanta.com

“Filled with insights . . . Skillfully reported and written with style.” ―The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“Drew Jubera's Must Win is an elegiac and riveting look inside the myth-making factory of small-town high school football, and a meditation on the strange power of sports to give meaning to our lives.” ―Warren St. John, New York Times bestselling author of Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer and Outcasts United

“Jubera unspools a sophisticated saga of a comeback season for storied Valdosta High School . . . He captures the slang and race relations and home-town hopes better than any writer since H.G. Bissinger got it so right with Friday Night Lights. Jubera’s eye for detail, ear for dialogue, and heart for young hopes delivers a helmet-to-helmet blow.
” ―Paste magazine, Our Favorite Books of 2012

“The depth of detail and craftsmanship of a gifted writer at his peak . . . You don't have to know a tight end from a Hail Mary to appreciate this book. On virtually every page, there is a reason to stop, to reread, and to marvel. This is a book worth cheering about.” ―Atlanta magazine

“Must Win--must read!” ―Jeff D'Alessio, SportingNews

“I can think of very few books about high school football that I would lay in the hands of anyone, from a fruit vendor in Delhi to a grandma in Des Moines. In fact, maybe only one: this one.” ―Gary Smith, Sports Illustrated

“The best nonfiction book I have read since the year 2000 . . . Jubera superbly captures it all―the town, the characters, the motivations, the dreams, the follies. [He] offers a book about all of us, football fan or not. It’s a book about what we try to achieve in the small town filled with big dreams inside every human heart.” ―Charles McNair, Paste Magazine

“Must Win is the inspiring tale of how a coach with a grand vision and even bigger heart plucked his players out of jail and off the farm and made them believe they were champions as they returned Valdosta to its rightful place as one of the most storied programs in high school football. Jubera knows South Georgia and makes you feel the gnats buzzing around your head, the barbecue on your lips, and buy into a community where Friday night football is much more than a religion―it’s a passport to heaven.” ―Joe Drape, author of The New York Times bestseller Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen

“Football is riddled with hype, hypocrisy, and greed on both the college and pro levels. But in Valdosta, Georgia, the game is about life, and that is what Drew Jubera so expertly and eloquently writes about. I love a story that digs into your soul. This is not necessarily a sports book. It is a character-driven tale of survival and the desire to be a champion again.” ―Jim Dent, author of Courage Beyond The Game and Twelve Mighty Orphans

Every play
By wogan
`Must Win' tells the story of the Valdosta High School -"the winningest high school football team in America". Except when Drew Jubera begins his story they are on a downslide, losing against their cross town arch rivals, losing their spirit, their games and coaches fired.

As one reads this your mind is drawn to all those great gridiron books and novels, and it seems at many points as if you have read this tale before. It is not written in the smoothest style or in the glory style of the game; but it tells the background of a bunch of boys, their families and the town. Many of them struggling with all the problems of young gangsta type violence, broken homes, and the lure of drugs, violence and girlfriends' pregnancies. We also read of seemingly every practice, every feeling, every play during their games.

There are a plethora of accounts and background here, the school, the discipline, the new coach and the town who could love or hate that coach and a team that just had to win. It's a town that had 2 police cars escort the team to games even after a decade of seasons that were failures.
There is always the lurking shadow of racism "Up until the late 80's, the notion of a black quarterback here was still as crazy as the notion of a black...president. Never happen".

There are no real movie tear jerker moments here, it doesn't have the all flashy glitzy throw helmets and hats in the air; instead it is the down and dirty, smelly world of football tradition that means something you just have to understand.

Friday Night Plights ...
By DACHokie
I remember reading the Sports Illustrated article ("Winnersville USA") my senior year in college (1988) that introduced the adulated history and lofty expectations of the Valdosta High School football program. The article detailed the pressure of the current coach (Nick Hyder) having to work under the ever-looming shadow of a deceased predecessor, Wright Bazemore, a legend that all subsequent Valdosta coaches would forever be compared. At the time of the article, Hyder was in the midst of eclipsing Bazemore by taking the program to even higher standards ... "national championships". Twenty-four years later, Drew Jubera revisits the Valdosta football program to find it a decaying shell of its former self and desperate to bring back the glory of yesteryear. While MUST WIN captures the uniqueness of Valdosta with its celebrated history, the book ironically struggles to free itself from the literary shadow cast by a like-minded book ... Buzz Bissinger's "Friday Night Lights".

Dating back to 1913, Valdosta football has maintained an astounding 79% win rate with (as of now) 869 wins. Losing is not a bitter pill that Valdosta's rabid fans and alumni must swallow, it's simply intolerable. Jubera drives this home in the first several chapters as the new coach in town, Rance Gillispie, is introduced to the Valdosta community that unceremoniously dumped several previous coaches for not living up to the standards of Bazemore and Hyder. Gillispie is even taken the cemetery where Bazemore and Hyder rest with the promise of his own personal plot if he can bring Valdosta back to its winning ways. While readers are following the new coach being "welcomed" into the fold, we are also being introduced to the various players the new coach must depend on to keep his job. Complicating an already difficult task is that the town that once served as the backbone of the Wildcats success has been decimated over the years by economic struggles and a wave of drug-related violence. MUST WIN details the trials and tribulations associated with the merging of these elements (new coach, past glory, young men and a decaying social scene) heading into the 2010 football season.

Although the ingredients are there, MUST WIN never seems to muster enough "mojo" to stand out as I found myself constantly reminded of Bissinger's iconic "Friday Night Lights". While the storylines parallel to a certain extent, Valdosta's pedigree status among high school football programs never gives the book enough steam to eclipse Bissinger's book in terms of immersive quality. The storyline, as promising as it seemed, was simply not captivating. The struggles of the players dealing with some serious issues (drug-related violence) while trying to stay in school and play football should be entrancing, but I found myself struggling to remember who was who throughout the book ... the stories just did not stand out. Most of all, there was a pervading sense that I had read and seen this before, only with different names and a different location. Basically, I felt this book was "Friday Night Lights, Part II" ... and we all know how sequels often don't measure up to the original. Jubera does a great job defining the atmosphere of Valdosta by detailing the coaching and winning legacies and the pressures Gillespie faces as the head coach. I especially enjoyed reading about Valdosta's frustration with cross-town rival, Lowndes High School ... a newer, spin-off school that, in recent years, has stolen Valdosta's "king of the hill" status by winning numerous state championships. The contrast between the two schools and Valdosta's desire to knock Lowndes off the pedestal it once owned proved to be interesting. The game-calling, however, was less than stellar and I found this to be somewhat disappointing given Jubera's experience as a sportswriter. And while it's clear that Valdosta coaches are held to high win standards, I never really got the sense that the 2010 season was "do-or-die" for Gillespie or the town ... just a fresh start for both. In fact, I felt Jubera was overly supportive of Gillespie throughout the book as the coach is portrayed in an almost saintly manner. I will be curious as to how long Valdosta's budding love affair with the coach will last.

I felt MUST WIN was hit-and-miss throughout. There were some instances where I really started to feel involved only to have Jubera switch gears and get me off-track. While the book has a degree of continuity, I felt it was a little "choppy" at times. The overall story, however, is interesting and somewhat inspiring ... as many high school sports stories are. My problem is that this storyline has already been told and MUST WIN simply doesn't measure up to the standard set by the original.

I Know Nothing About Football And I Loved This Book
By Joan K.
OK, full disclosure: I bought this book because I had to. I am not a football fan. What I know about football could fit on the head of a pin. But I bought Must Win because the author is a friend and because I used to live in Georgia. And even a non-football fan like me couldn't live in Georgia without vaguely hearing about this high school team in a town called Valdosta that won everything every year. So out of loyalty to my friend and to my home state, I bought this book. I never planned to actually read it.

Then I stumbled onto the first paragraph:

The black kid with the badass tats stood smiling on the practice field sideline. Beat jail. Helmet off, earring on fire in the afternoon sun, he surprised teammates with his out-of-nowhere appearance, as if he'd spontaneously erupted from the heat and the sweat, returned now to this gnat-bitten patch of deepest South Georgia from a biblical-sounding exile of forty-four days and forty-four nights -- wandering the wilderness, right across town, inside the Lowndes County lockup.

And I smiled and kept reading and couldn't stop. And on the way to the last page, I may have even teared up a couple of times. Must Win is not a book about football. Must Win is a book about life disguised as a book about football. And it's fantastic. Those 100 yards of grass between the goal posts in a tiny sweltering Southern town transformed broken lives, turned coaches into gods (as long as they were winning), tore down racial barriers and instilled a fierce pride in this community that was lost for awhile but now is clawing its way back. In the end, for some of the kids -- and even some of the adults -- there is no fairytale ending and football cannot save them. Every word of this book is gritty and true to life. I loved it.

Take it from this football dummy, Must Win is a great sports book that every non-sports fan should buy and read.

Great book with detailed insight of world history
By Corey Faure
Being given this book for my AP World History class, I can say that this book is a great source for the course. The content is easily understood, goes into great detail, and extends to further detail in the documents section of each chapter.

The only drawback is a physical defect of the book itself, which seems to be universal of every copy in the class. The very first page of the book with content (the map page) has a noticeable tear in the seam. All students reported this, although no one's book is really falling to pieces.

Ike's father is Able Terrell, a survivalist who has withdrawn from society and lives in a gated compound. He's not happy that his son has chosen to attend the college, and he's even less happy with the arrest.

Rhodes discovers that Wellington and Ike had had a confrontation over a paper that Wellington insisted Ike plagiarized. Wellington also had had a confrontation with the dean and was generally disliked by the students. As the number of suspects increases, it's up to Rhodes to solve the murder while also dealing with an amusing but frustrating staff, a professor who wants to be a cop, and all the other normal occurrences that can wreak havoc in a small town.

Quirky Characters and Situations Add to the Story
By JJares
The wonderful thing about these Dan Rhodes stories is that they are throw-backs to the mystery novels before Miami Vice and NCIS. Solutions are found because of hard work, not snappy forensics or DNA. Fun and humor are woven between the threads of the plot. Dr. C. P. Benton; “Seepy” is a case in point. If there's ever been a wannabe police officer, it is Seepy.

The story starts with hair extensions -- they have been stolen from the Beauty Shack in town. While the sheriff is sorting through the clues another call comes -- there's a dead body at the community college campus. The dead man is an English professor who is very unpopular with the students and faculty. While Rhodes is trying to tie down the crime scene, a car speeds away and Rhodes has to go in hot pursuit. When Rhodes finally catches his man, the case of the hair extensions returns. But this student has had hard words with the dead professor; is he the killer?

There's a lot of humor, odd-ball characters and a dying small town wrapped into the lot. Because the place remains and quirky characters return (like bad pennies), the reader has a sense that this place and situation could really exist.

XXXXXX SPOILER ALERT XXXXXXXX (DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU WANT A CLUE THAT WILL GIVE AWAY THE PLOT). My beef with this novel is the title. As soon as the first word of the title came up in the story, it gave away the killer. Bummer.

I have read every book in this series and loved every book. I like the character and the little Texas town. Very believable books! Well written and fast paced and no real fancy csi work or detective's procedures.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up—Beatrice Shakespeare Smith, a sarcastic, likable 17-year-old, must find a way to make herself invaluable to the Théâtre Illuminata or she will be forced to leave the only home she has ever known. How she arrived at the theater as a baby is somewhat of a mystery, and through the years she has been allowed to run free and cause mayhem of one kind or another. Beatrice proposes to restage Hamlet set in ancient Egypt and promises it will be the sell-out performance that will restore the Théâtre to its former glory. If that were all, the story line would be fairly straightforward. However, the Théâtre Illuminata is no ordinary theater. Characters from the world's major plays live inside, summoned forth by pinning a note on the Call Board. They are bound to the physical confines of the theater by the pages in The Complete Works of the Stage, an enchanted book. Scene changes happen magically by command, though human Properties and Scenic Managers argue over which pieces belong to whom. The fairies from A Midsummer Night's Dream provide the comic relief, and Ariel and Ophelia provide some of the action. Readers who have some knowledge of or interest in theatrical productions will have the easiest time following the twists and turns of the plot, which is especially confusing in the beginning. However, wondering what crazy thing will happen next will keep them going. The ending is a little unsatisfying, and it is clear that a sequel is coming. Nonetheless, the story is clever, if a bit melodramatic at times, and Beatrice is a fun character.—Cheri Dobbs, Detroit Country Day Middle School, Beverly Hills, MI

Review

“Lisa Mantchev's theatrical fantasy ‘Eyes Like Stars' pits a plucky orphan, Beatrice Shakespeare Smith, and her fairy attendants against the wiles of Ariel and a stuffy stage manager.” ―New York Times Book Review

“All the world's truly a stage in Lisa Mantchev's innovative tale, Eyes Like Stars. Magical stagecraft, unmanageable fairies, and a humourous cast of classical characters form the backdrop for this imaginative coming-of age.” ―Suzanne Collins

“With an iron-willed girl hero whose magic is with words, and a universe that is also the ultimate theater, Eyes Like Stars is the most unusual fantasy I've read this year! I recommend it to anyone who loves drama, strong girls, and rowdy faery folk!” ―Tamora Pierce

“Electric…delicious…fascinating…vivid…smart and sassy…bawdy and hilarious…Brava! Encore!” ―Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

“Bertie's determined efforts to become invaluable form the basic plot in this wildly imagined adventure…Mantchev clearly knows theater from all angles, and she uses inventive play-within-play formats to create a tumble of multiple, even metaphysical narratives filled with delicious banter and familiar characters from the dramatic canon. Many teens, particularly those with some theatrical background, will look forward to the sequel suggested at the end of this bravely flamboyant and wholly original romp.” ―Booklist

“Mantchev's first novel feels dreamlike…underneath is a solid story about the search for happiness and identity. Inside jokes will delight drama club devotees…but this passionate debut should attract a broader readership as well.” ―Publishers Weekly

In between report cards and drafting scripts for Winter and Spring productions, she wrote fiction.  Her first professional short fiction sale was in 2002, and her debut trilogy sold in 2007. Mantchev makes her home on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state with her husband Angel, her daughter Amélie and four hairy miscreant dogs. When not scribbling, she can be found on the beach, up a tree, making jam or repairing things with her trusty glue gun.

Positively sparkling!
By The Compulsive Reader
The Théâtre Illuminata is the only home Bertie has ever known. It's a magical place where The Book, which contains every script written, resides along with countless players who are not born, but written into their parts. Bertie is an outsider, a human orphan, left at the mercy of the Theater Manager and raised by the players. But when her endless tricks and tomfoolery drive some at the Theatre Illuminata to the end of their ropes, Bertie is given an ultimatum: become uniquely useful, or get out. But there is much more at stake than Bertie ever realized...

One word comes to mind when it comes to Eyes Like Stars, and that is scintillating. Lisa Mantchev's debut novel positively sparkles. It is overflowing with all the elements that make up great reads: fabulous humor, a spunky, clever, and lovable heroine, four mischievous and amusing fairies, a dashing pirate, a pernicious villain, and a deep secret that could change everything. Mantchev structures the novel in an interesting and enjoyable fashion, using prose and drama styles to create a "play within a play" effect that keeps things interesting. Because the novel starts out briskly and doesn't really slow down, some readers may feel a bit confused at the very beginning of the novel, but its not long before things click into place perfectly. And even though Eyes Like Stars alludes heavily to Shakespeare's work, knowledge of Shakespeare and his works aren't required in order to enjoy this extremely clever, lively, and glittering read. As each page goes by, readers learn something new and delightful about the Théâtre Illuminata, until at the very end it is impossible to let go of Bertie and her cast. This hilarious and quirky debut demands an encore!

Cover Comments: Stunning. This cover captures the eye! The fairies and are a really great touch, and the colors just perfect. I also really like the font both the title and the author's name and tagline are in. This cover is quirky, dramatic, and exciting, just like the book!

To Review or Not to Review, That is the Question
By Emerald City Girl
Let's start with THE mother or all disclaimers: I am actually related to the author.

Nepotism is an interesting thing; it's most likely what got me cast in two of my sister's plays growing up (considering I can't act my way out of a hat box) but it's not what's led me to review her debut novel: "Eyes Like Stars."

Reading "Eyes Like Stars" is a bit like seeing my sister's head explode on the page...only with caffeine and sugar infused fairies. I've had the benefit of reading several incarnations of "Eyes Like Stars" and the inevitable wailing began with me lamenting: "you cut the bit I liked!" That said the end result is one of the most imaginative, thoughtful and well, just plain amazing books that I've read in a really long time. I explain to my friends and colleagues that the book is about Bertie, an orphan growing up in a theatre surrounded by the most famous and notorious characters in every play ever written. When Bertie is told she must leave the theatre she is set on a path of proving her worth, not only to the Management, but herself and through the process learns the secrets of her past and the person she is going to become. Far more than a simple story though, Lisa creates a world that is visually acute. When I read the book I feel like I'm watching a play or movie; that I am Bertie in the thick of things, surrounded by miscreant fairies and caught between two very charismatic men. The story's vibrancy practically leaps from the page and using a device such as formatting flashbacks like a stage play is brilliant, not to mention completely original.

"Eyes Like Stars" is a smart read and is everything I enjoyed reading growing up (and to be perfectly honest, is still what I enjoy reading): vibrant characters, witty banter with a generous splash of sarcasm, a dash of romance and lots of sugar. The perfect recipe for a great read. If you enjoy reading books by Neil Gaiman, Frank Beddor, Tamora Pierce, and Diana Wynne Jones and love plays and acting, it's a good bet that you'll love this book!

Bring on the next book, Sis!

Best. Fun. Evar.
By Elizabeth Osborn
I wasn't looking forward to writing this review, because it would be hard to tamp down my enthusiasm.

This was exactly the book I wanted to read.

The word that kept coming back to me as I read it was effortless. The humor works perfectly, and the dialogue rivals Gilmore Girls--only it's a lot more genuine. The cast--and it is a large cast, since, you know, every character from every play lives in the Theater--was handled deftly, and even the minor characters shine.

I was worried when I started, afraid that worldbuilding could have weighted the manuscript down. That's the problem with coming up with something so unique, so fresh--most writers don't know how to make it work. I'm always terribly interested in the workings of the world in which characters I like live, but oftentimes it gets in the way of plot. Again, the word effortless pops up. Mantchev tells the reader just what they need to know to make the story viable--no more--and leaves the rest up to the imagination...or perhaps the next books in the series.

And the voice?

Oh wow, the voice rocks my socks. Glib but tinted with mystery, new but old, curious and straightforward, the contradictions only add depth and flavor to an already solid plot.

As for the characters, I fear saying much because their stories are so tightly woven that I might give spoilers. Trust me, you don't want spoilers. You just want to experience the magic that is this book.

And I think that's what's been missing from a lot of fantasy stories: real magic. But Eyes Like Stars has magic and so much more. Can't wait for the next installment to get here!

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Dishing up a rare example of a character-driven tale that is also suspenseful and exciting, the author of the Jigsaw Jones series chronicles a magnificent championship game between two Little League teams that is as much about the players as the plays. Most of the action takes place on the field, and Preller leverages his love of the game and his experience as a Little League manager and coach to capture the games rhythms, routine plays, surprises, strategic moves, and shifting momentum that characterize baseball at its best. At the same time, he illuminates the personalities of most of the participants, from the bench clown and the slugger with a burning desire to smash things to the weak infielder who, despite gnawing self-doubt, makes a crucial play, and the game announcer, a former star whose life has been derailed by bone cancer. The baseball-as-a-metaphor-for-life theme is present but, thankfully, not in a dominant way in this absorbing sports novel. Grades 5-8. --John Peters

Review

“Perceptive and funny, sketches introduce us to the players while the nail-biting action keeps the pages turning.” ―The Miami Herald, on Six Innings as one of the Best Kids' Books of the Year

“Preller raises his game with this perceptive group portrait of boys who play Little League baseball. . . If Judy Blume could write a book about Little League, about its players' deepest fears and secret dreams, it might come out something like this.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Dishing up a rare example of a character-driven tale that is also suspenseful and exciting, the author of the Jigsaw Jones series chronicles a magnificent championship game between two Little League teams that is as much about the players as the plays.” ―Booklist, starred review

“This is a book whose emotional pull creeps up on you, pitch by pitch. Organized around the six innings of a Little League championship game, the story will appeal to longtime fans of baseball as well as those who know nothing about the sport . . . this is a book as much about on-the-field action as it is life lessons....Even sports veterans will savor many of Preller's observations--especially about pitchers (e.g., ‘All pitchers have a little bit of rock star in them'; ‘It is a job for an egotist. And an optimist. No others need apply.'). Like the boys on the field and in the press box, readers will feel this is a game to remember.” ―Shelf Awareness

“Sharing tidbits of these boys' lives, exposing diverse backgrounds and situations, Six Innings should hit home with many readers....A tale of baseball, friendship, growth, and coming to terms with hardships, this fast read will grasp any reader who enjoys sports.” ―School Library Journal

“Little touches make this novel stand out from other baseball fiction aimed at younger readers… Do not let this title ride the pine, but make sure it has a place in your sports fiction line-up.” ―VOYA

“Following the play-by-play builds suspense and brings the reader right into the action and the special world of baseball and the people who love it.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Like the game of baseball...this book has it all.
By Matthew Ball
I read Six Innings with my sixth grader, who can't wait for baseball season to start each spring. We absolutely loved it!

This book is wonderful on so many levels. James Preller captures the game of baseball and all that it means to kids (and adults). But it's not just a book about baseball. It's about being a kid. It's about being part of a team. It's about being a friend.

Six Innings is the story of two close friends, Sam and Mike, and the ups and downs of their friendship, their families, their lives. Their story, like the stories of the rest of the little leaguers in the book, is revealed pitch by pitch, half-inning by half-inning, as a dramatic championship game is played.

The baseball action is entertaining, realistic, and filled with the twists and turns that come with the game. Young readers will identify with the authentic characters and dialogue. If kids don't recognize themselves somewhere in this book, then they'll recognize kids they know. Don't think that this is "just a baseball book" though - it is so much more. The depth of the story beyond the game and the challenges the kids face off the field will completely draw you in, too.

Should be required reading at little league diamonds around the country this spring!

Major league quality -- a real talent
By Travis Ann Sherman
Six Innings by James Preller is just that, the play by play description of six innings of a Little League baseball game. All of our nation's obsession with the sanctity of the game is concentrated in this afternoon of play by two teams of boys. The book opens in Sam Reiser's bedroom, where he is lying in bed, a young amputee now only able to announce his team's play, to speak the words for actions he can no longer perform. We think we are in for a problem novel, a book about adjusting to a handicap. Then the innings begin, and we realize that Preller has found the perfect dramatic structure in which he can write about twenty-four different boys in depth, each member of the team. Using the inexorable action of the six innings, he delineates the interplay of personalities, abilities, the age of the players and their temperaments. The hopelessness of young Patrick Wong in outfield, praying the ball won't go to him, vowing never to play again after his last humiliating strike out, is compared to the hard throwing pitcher, who already shows signs of a moustache. Although everyone cares deeply and intensely, the action is balanced by the humor of the identical twins, the serious one, Eamon Sweeney, and the leftie, Colin Sweeney, referred to by their coach as the Right Sweeney and the Wrong Sweeney and the attitude of the coaches themselves. In a tense moment, a coach takes his team aside and urges them to "Have fun." Six Innings has a lingering effect, the way baseball does, its pace subtle, leaving the lingering promise of summer.

It's the kind of book that. when I got to the end of it, I didn't even know was meant for kids. I went on vacation and brought this book, not ecven glancing at the jacket copy that suggests it was meant for 11 to 13 year olds. I did think that the language of its rambunctious Little Leaguers was a bit on the sanitized side. The boys love to stage impromptu contests involving dialogue from their favorite baseball movies, everything from THE BAD NEWS BEARS to FIELD OF DREAMS, and evcen the mildest of these has dialogue racier than anything you'll find in James Preller's novel. So that might have tipped me off, but what do I know! I would definitely recommend it to adults.

The emotionally involving parts of the story take place during rhw championship game between Earl Grubb's Pool Supplies and NE Gas & Electric. The boy who does the scorekeeping for EGPS has a rare disease which has resulted in benching his once promising career at bat, but does he cry or whimper? Well, you'll have to see for yourself. At the other end of the spectrum is the boy who, while enjoying himself at baseball, has now found himself interested in other things, and today might be his very last day playing in organized sport. What a range of players, some with comic subplots, some with underdeveloped storylines, but most of them genuine individuals. The only defect in the story is Preller's working up the actual game pictured in "Six Innings," which is made up of one classic play after another, each one more spectacular than the last, and each reminiscent of a famous major league moment, so it's a bit unbelievable these ordinary kids would wind up in a game this exciting, but hear that whistle? It's time to -- play ball.
