Short and sweet. This is a story fans of Christmas and those who like Debbie Macomber books will enjoy.

Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor is a short, slow, sweet and heartwarming romance perfect for the holiday season.

It is a light romance about 3 brothers who live on an island. The Nolan men have had a troubled young life. Christmas for them is just another day. But tragedy strikes when their only sister dies in a car accident and she gives legal guardianship to her brother Mark. A single guy in his prime Mark doesn't know what to do. He persuades his brother Sam to share responsibility. But their niece Holly has been traumatized and can't or won't speak since the accident. That is until the owner of a new toy shop named Maggie Collins gives Holly a magical shell. Holly seems to bond with Maggie immediately. Maggie and Mark find an undeniable attraction but Mark already has a girlfriend named Shelby and Maggie is recovering from her husband's recent death from cancer. Their emotions are conflicted. Shelby would be the perfect mother for Holly. Maggie feels guilt over finding another man attractive. Both are in a transitional period but can't seem to stop thinking about each other. Will they overcome their obstacles?

This was a soft and sweet romance. There was once sex scene and it was very tame. Although short the 2 characters do have a real connection. I loved how they flirted and their conversations together were fun to read. Both are decent people who are unsure and don't want to cause the other person pain. I really liked how they respected each other and were good people from the beginning. However, I have enjoyed the author's other contemporary books a bit more probably because she has more time to develop the couple's relationship. So the only problem for me is that this book's price is rather high for one that is ~ 200 pages long.

This is a story fans of Christmas and those who like Debbie Macomber books will enjoy. Heartfelt and joyous, it definitely brings holiday magic!

Disappointing

I love Lisa Kleypas. She is my favorite author, I have read all of her books and I was so looking forward to the Friday Harbor series. I was so disappointed in this book. My first complaint was the length. I felt cheated in a way. I'm used to her books being longer and more fulfilling but this one was just lacking. The worst part is, this book had so much potential! She is a great writer and her description of Friday Harbor were great you felt like you were there. However, the characters and the plots were extremely underdeveloped. I felt almost as though Mark's relationship with Shelby was more developed than the main relationship. The romance in the story was really underdeveloped as well. I could buy them being really good friends, but I didn't feel that the romance or relationship was developed well. The ending was rushed, it felt that about 150 pages were missing. I think there should have been a huge chunk to be filled in after Mark breaks up with Shelby and before the end. Also, the sex scence was definitely lacking. She usually writes more convincing scenes where you can believe that they people are in love and passionate about each other and this one really did not convince me at all. I won't be buying the next book in the series. I'll wait until my local library has it. This one really wasn't worth the money.

Disappointing

I love Lisa Kleypas. I love her historicals and her Texas series. But this book was disappointing.

To start with, it's way too expensive for how short it is. If I was paying $5 for a category romance from Harlequin, it would have been a 5 star read. At almost $16 for the full price hardcover, it's just simply not worth the price. It's barely over 200 pages of larger type. There's just not enough to it.

The story has merit, true, but it read way to rushed at the end. There's build up, but then suddenly it all wraps up and it's over. For the majority of the book (more than 1/2 the pages) the hero isn't even available! He's dating someone else. Then all of a sudden he's not and they're together. It felt rushed to me.

If this had another 100 pages to it, the story might have been more believably developed. As it is, I was disappointed to pay so much to get so little. Even for a holiday book, it's just not up to Lisa Kleypas's usual best.

Chapter 1

They have to go. They have no choice. Emperor Caesar Augustus has issued a decree that a census will be taken of the entire Roman world to aid in military drafting and tax collection. Although the Jews do not have to serve in the Roman army, but since they are obligated to pay taxes to Rome, everyone will have to go and register at the place of their ancestral home. For Joseph’s family it would be over seventy miles and a four-to-seven-day walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the town of his ancestors. It’s not going to be an easy journey either, considering the shape Mary is in. She is nine months pregnant and will have to make the trip that winds through wilderness, desert, and mountainside, sitting sidesaddle on a donkey and feeling every rock and bump along the way.

Joseph leads the donkey out of the village at dawn. Mary’s eyes are heavy, but he spent a sleepless night and has been awake for hours waiting for light. The smell of fish and eggs cooking on morning fires saturates the street with a misty fog as families prepare for breakfast. Joseph’s stomach rumbles as he packs the donkey. He should have eaten more but is anxious to get on the road. His eyes meet Mary’s as he helps her onto the donkey. He nods and she smiles in the half-light. Joseph walks beside the donkey, and although he does not look at them, he feels the eyes of his neighbors as they pass. The chattering of three women drawing water ceases as he and Mary go by, and Mary keeps her head down. She has long known what they think of her. The laughter of two men mending a fishing net subsides to a whisper as the donkey approaches, and children stop playing in the street when their mothers clack their tongues and snap their fingers.

Joseph sets his jaw and ignores them, relieved to get away for a while. The angel of God had visited him and Mary about this baby, but he hadn’t visited everyone in town. Joseph has heard the townspeople ridicule Mary. He has seen them point and then turn away, ostracizing her with their clenched teeth and cold shoulders. “Perversion,” they have said. “Prostituted under the nose of her father.” The gossiped indictments and whispered innuendoes have seeped under every doorway. The conception was not cloaked in anonymity. Everyone knew her name. They knew her father and mother’s name. Joseph’s own heart has throbbed with a dull pain for weeks, and looking at Mary, he wonders how someone so young is able to bear the burden of such a stigma.

Mary lays her hands on her swollen belly. The baby dropped into the birth canal days ago, causing increasing discomfort. A chill clings to the shadows that stretch over the sleepy town, and Joseph places a thin blanket over Mary’s legs. The morning echoes grow distant as they thread their way out of town, and Joseph’s tensions ease.

“Are you well?” he asks.

“I am,” she says, smiling, rubbing her stomach. “He is no longer stirring but is heavy inside.”

Joseph forces a smile and quickens his steps. What if she gives birth on the side of a mountain? What if the baby comes in the middle of the wilderness? What would he do? Who could help him? Several families from Nazareth are traveling in caravans on the road ahead and behind them, but Joseph does not feel he can rely on them for help. He has never felt so isolated in his life.

They are quiet as the sun rises. There is so much to discuss, so many questions to ask, but neither of them is ready. Thoughts swirl in their minds as the donkey clop-clops his way over the terrain. The valley is a canvas of windblown grass swimming with wildflowers and fruit trees. Mary does not pick any fruit yet; there would be more opportunities on the journey. The smell of balsam fills the air, and Mary takes a deep breath, the scent reminding her of childhood playtime on the hills surrounding her home.

The road ahead is full of twists and turns as lush valley turns to chalky dirt and then rock. Mary is jostled about on the donkey, and a flashing pain takes her breath. She reaches for her back, attempting to ease the hurt, but there it is again. She leans forward on the donkey and holds her breath till the ache passes. It seems so long ago that she was baking bread in her home, a young girl giggling with her mother and teasing her siblings. Was it only nine months ago? Mary smiles, her mind swirling with sweet childlike noises from her parent’s home.

She moves her hand over her abdomen. There was no longer a plate set for her at her parent’s table. Her place of rest beside her sister was now empty. They would no longer whisper into the night, sharing girlish secrets and stories. She closes her eyes and breathes deeply. It is still too much to comprehend that the promise of God is enfleshed in her womb, dependent upon her for life.

In a small village, Joseph helps Mary to the ground, where women are picking over fruit in the marketplace. He leads the donkey to a trough filled with water. Mary stretches and arches her back. “Are you hungry?” she asks.

“Always,” Joseph says, taking off his sandals.

She unwraps some bread and fish she brought from home. These foods always travel well, and she hopes she has packed enough for their trip. She reaches into a satchel for some figs and a pomegranate they picked outside the village.

“Do you want to sit?” he asks, pointing to the shade of a tree.

“No,” she says, laughing. He sits beneath the tree and pushes the bread into his mouth. Mary walks to the well in the center of town and draws water, filling a cup and taking it to Joseph. He drinks it down and she fills it again. She hands the cup to him and leans against the tree. The noise of customers haggling over prices and the clanking of merchandise in the marketplace drifts on the wind as Mary watches the donkey drink. “Are you frightened, Joseph?” she asks.

He looks up at her. Every illusion he had of starting a family with her ended months ago when she told him she was pregnant. Every conceivable dream of the village celebrating their wedding shattered when rumors swelled that his betrothed was a harlot. Swept away with those dreams were his plans and desires and every expectation he had for their new life together. He was torn from the privacy of a once-quiet life and shifted into one of public shame and ridicule. He is still trying to wrap his mind around all that has taken place in so short a time. He watches Mary as the corners of her mouth turn up in soft edges. For months now, those she has grown up with, who have shared meals around her family’s table have been quick to brand her, but these well-mannered guardians of morality never even cupped their ear to hear the truth or offered a word of compassion. The hourglass has been turned and eternity is fast approaching, but their thoughts have been consumed with how the law of Moses is unwavering concerning what to do with those caught in sexual sin. The very angel who came to Mary all those months ago must surely have guarded her life from the hatred and condemnation of the righteous bent on vengeance in the name of God. How else has her life been spared? Is she frightened? He cannot tell. He hasn’t known her long enough to discern her emotions or fears. They are both so new to each other.

“The angel told me not to be afraid,” he says.

A breeze laps at her face and she remains quiet, thinking. “So then, you are not?”

He breaks the bread in two and hands her a piece. “I wish I could say that I am not, but I am. I am terrified.” He watches as others gather around the well. “What does that make me?”

She sits on the ground and reaches for a fig. “As human as I,” she says. “I too am frightened. There is so much that I don’t know.” Her voice is faint. “So much that I will never understand.” He looks at her, and her eyes are deep, touching the far reaches of her soul. “Why was I chosen for this? Why you?”

He shakes his head. “How will I teach him?”

“How do you teach any child?” she asks.

He turns his face to her. “Yes. But how do you teach him?” They eat in silence as the question fills the air around them. “How will I raise him?”

“With love,” she says.

He looks at her. “But is love from a common man enough?”

She traces her finger through the blades of grass in front of her. “It will be more than enough,” she says. “It is the very reason he’s coming.”

Journey to the Christ child birth as experienced by the parents

A young couple experiences shame from their neighbor's disbelief of the origin of their pregnancy;
shame from a stable substitute for a birthing room;
sheep's bedding for blankets;
animal's rags for cleaning and swaddling. Then...
"The Savior is sleepy."
The parents' emotions, travel weariness, and fears are put to rest.
Thus goes the most miraculous of all birth miracles.

29 humble watercolors (Michael Storrings) help keep this variation of the birth story earthy and believable. Feel the dust, smell the hay mold, and partake in the flickering afterglow.

humanizes The Christmas Jounrey

Every year the Christmas season seems to come earlier and earlier as the stores decorate even co-mingling with Thanksgiving as the Yuletide is a big sales time. Pageants are everywhere displaying the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem and especially the nativity scene as Joseph and pregnant Mary found no room at the inn, but the owner allowed them to stay in a stable. This is the sentimental legend, but not the true story as another example of when "Professor" Wuhl's theory (extracted from Who Shot Liberty Valance?) that "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend" (see Assume the Position).

The couple travels seventy miles taking several days to complete the trek. As they depart from Nazareth, Joseph notices that people he knew all his life as friends treat Mary like a pariah because Mary became pregnant while living under her father's roof. They leave as outcasts in accordance to the then Laws of Moses. Their journey proves grueling with Mary feeling each step the donkey takes. She fears what is expected of her raising the Son; while he fears being the father to the Savior as he believes he cannot be worthy of having God bestow such an honor on him. When they reach their destination, the crowds are overwhelming and there is no place for them at the inn. Joseph feels overwhelmed because he has to help Mary deliver but though conditions are extremely poor, Mary gives birth to a healthy Savior.

Donna VanLiere `s version of one of the most legendary journeys provides a realistic look at the two travelers as a pregnant Mary rides a donkey for seventy miles (I rode a mule years ago down the Grand Canyon for a few hours and that was fun but a bit sore). The trek is dirty and dusty while people they know along their path ignore them The illustrations augment the story as Ms. VanLiere adds the human facts normally ignored by the miracle birth.

As a graduate student who is very pro-choice and has done a lot of reading on the subject (both for class and on my own) I don't feel like there was a lot that was said in this book that I hadn't already thought about, at least vaguely (although Pollitt lays it out much more clearly than I ever could). It is definitely worth reading, however! I felt that the book is engaging and very easy to understand, and it does an amazing job of both laying out the pro-choice position, and identifying the problems with the pro-life position (and with many suggested pro-life "compromises") when taken to their logical extreme. I would most likely recommend it (1) to the "middle grounders," who may not identify strongly as pro-life or pro-choice, and who may not entirely understand why pro-choice people are as passionate as we are on the issue and (2) to people who are pro-choice, but who don't have a lot of exposure to pro-choice rhetoric and/or find it difficult to put into words why they feel the way they do on the issue.

A beautifully crafted story

I remember my dad reading the Moomintroll books to me when I was very young. When I was a bit older, I read them again, myself. Now I'm 21, and thought I'd try reading this book once more, after all these years. I've just finished reading it, and it was great. Like most of the best children's fiction, it also appeals perfectly to adults, and although it was written over 40 years ago, I don't think it seems dated, really. There's a lot of sharp humour, and memorable situations/characters. A lot of the themes in the book seem perfectly in-line with amazing childhood exploits; Discovery, exploration... The book surprised me with how ahead-of-its-time it seemed. I don't think you'd find an English book from 1950 that is so liberated and foreward-thinking. Anyway, what I'm (clumsily) trying to say is, I loved this book, and will now read the other books in the series. One last thing: Tove Jansson's illustrations are also excellent, and perfectly complement the story.

Ranks with Pooh as classic children's lit

I discovered this book while rummaging through a flea market bookshelf 5 years ago. I had never heard of Jansson or the Moomins, but was looking for something to read to my daughter, who was then 6. With nothing more than an interesting cover illustration to recommend it, I took a 10cent gamble.
Within the first 10 pages I realized that I had stumbled onto something quite remarkable, by the middle of the book both my daughter and I were engulfed in Moominland, and by the end I went out to scour bookshelves and web sites to get my hands on all the other Moomin books.
Quite simply, this series (and this book in particular) ranks with Winnie-the-Pooh and the Alice books as the truest, wisest, funniest, and most beautiful books for kids ever written. Tove Jannson has created a world populated with myriad creatures possessing a variety and depth of character unrealized in any other children's series I can think of, and rarely reached in adult fiction.
Of particular note are her numerous and varied female characters, unheard of in American and English children's lit...Little My is brash, determined, unrepentant, and spoiling for a good fight. Moominmamma is warm and nurturing without ever being sappy or sentimental. Long sufering Misabel looks only at the bluer side of life and relishes a good cry. The Snork Maiden is vain and frivolous. Emma is cantankerous, crochety, and uninterested in changing to suit anyone else's agenda. How many other books can you read to a young girl with that variety of female characters? And that's just the beginning of the list. The male characters are equally as varied, fallible, goofy, and complex.
Character aside, Jansson's sense of adventure, wild imagination, bleak Scandinavian humor, and peaceful world view make these books a marvel to read. Her illustrations are gorgeous, plentiful, and a perfect compliment to her writing.
My daughter is 11 now and doesn't require a parent to read to her anymore, yet she still asks to hear the Moomin books read aloud.
My advice...give Harry Potter a rest, and treat yourself and family to real classic children's lit. You won't be sorry. And if you like this one, Moominland Midwinter and Comet in Moominland are great next choices.

There is no better fiction book for kids (and/or adults)

My love for Moomins started when I was 6-7. In Poland, where I come from, Moomins were very popular. After my Mom went through all 8 books, and me and my younger brother did not have enough of them, she started to invent new adventures of Moomin, Snufkin, and the rest of the pack. I wish I had noted all these stories...

Anyway, this book is a good starting point, even though, chronologically, it is NOT the first one. You will see the Moominvalley at its best, full of adventures. "Finn Family Moomintroll" is a set of loosely connected stories; you can read one at a time without having to remember what happened last, or caring what will happen next (now, your child WILL insist that you keep on reading when you finish a story, you can be sure of that!).

It is interesting how the Swedish names (I think Tove Jansson wrote the original in Swedish, even though she lived in Finland) got translated into different languages. I will give you English and Polish examples below. Can anyone else post here other translations?

“Is this class ever going to end?”
My best friend, Brooklyn, draped her upper body across her desk in a dramatic reenactment of Desdemona’s death in Othello. She buried her face in a tangle of arms and long black hair for effect. It was quite moving. And while I appreciated her freedom to express her misgivings about the most boring class since multicelled organisms first crawled onto dry land, I wondered about her timing.
“Miss Prather,” our Government teacher, Mr. Gonzales, said, his voice like a sharp crack in the silence of study time.
Brooklyn jerked upright in surprise. She glanced around as our classmates snickered, either politely into their hands or more rudely outright.
“Is there something you’d like to share with the class?”
She turned toward Mr. Gonzales and asked, “Did I say that out loud?”
The class erupted in laughter as Mr. G’s mouth formed a long narrow line across his face. Miraculously, the bell rang and Brooklyn couldn’t scramble out of her seat fast enough. She practically sprinted from the room. I followed at a slower pace, smiling meekly as I walked past Mr. G’s desk.
Brooklyn stood waiting for me in the hall, her face still frozen in surprise.
“That was funny,” I said, tugging her alongside me. She fell in line as we wound through the crush of students, fighting our way to PE. I wasn’t sure why. I didn’t particularly enjoy having my many faults and numerous shortcomings put on display for all to see, so why I would fight to get there was beyond me.
“No, really.” She tucked an arm through mine. “I didn’t mean to say that out loud.”
I couldn’t help but smile despite the weight on my chest, a weight that seemed endless. “Which is why that was funny.”
I did that a lot lately. Smiled. It was easier than explaining why I wasn’t.
“You don’t get it,” she said. “This is exactly what I’ve been talking about. Everything is weird ever since … you know.”
I did know. Ever since Jared Kovach came to town. Ever since he’d saved my life after a huge green delivery truck slammed into me. Ever since we’d found out he was the Angel of Death and had been sent not to save my life but to take it. To tweak the timing. To take me sooner than nature—or a huge green delivery truck—had intended.
And ever since I found out I’d been possessed by a demon when I was six years old.
Still, that wasn’t the worst part of that day all those years ago. The worst part was the fact that my parents were gone. Vanished in a whirlwind when some guy—we still had no idea who—opened the gates of hell. And I’d led them straight to it. The fact that a demon—Malak-Tuke, to be exact, Lucifer’s second-in-command—escaped from his fiery pit and decided to crash at my place was just the icing on the cake. But I didn’t know any of this until two months ago.
I’d been living with my grandparents since the disappearance, but my semi-normal existence changed forever when I was knocked into the street by a skateboarder and hit by that truck.
That near-death experience taught me a valuable lesson: Never get hit by a huge green delivery truck if I can help it. But if I hadn’t, if my life hadn’t almost ended that day, then Jared Kovach would not have been sent. And oddly enough, Jared Kovach was definitely worth the risk.
The events that followed were both terrifying and life changing. I learned that there really was a heaven and a hell. That there really were angels and demons. That I was a prophet, the last prophet in a long line of incredible women, descended from a powerful woman named Arabeth. And I’d learned that I had a demon inside me, that I’d had him inside me for years.
Even Jared had never seen anything like it. Most people possessed by evil spirits were lucky to survive. People possessed by demons—a rarity, from what I’d been told—never survived more than a month. Ever. And yet here I stood. As possessed as a girl with a demon inside her could be.
And, yes, things had been weird.
“People are acting strange, and the world has dark, fuzzy edges,” Brooklyn continued.
Before I could suggest a visit to the school nurse, an arm snaked around my neck from behind and I felt something poke my temple. A quick sideways glance told me it was a hand shaped to resemble a gun. “Give me all your money,” Glitch said through gritted teeth, pulling out his best Clint Eastwood impersonation.
Glitch, a connoisseur of computers, skipping, and coasting through school with less than stellar grades, was our sidekick and partner in crime. We weren’t the greatest criminals, so we really didn’t partner up for such endeavors often. Glitch and I had grown up together. He was half Native American and half Irish American, and he had the dark skin and hazel green eyes to prove it.
I wasn’t sure what I’d done to deserve either of my two best friends. Even when they found out I’d been possessed—was still possessed—they didn’t bail on me. That was true friendship. Or insanity. Either way.
I shook off his arm and tossed a grin at him from over my shoulder.
“You cut your hair,” I said to him, noticing his blond highlights were missing. The trim left only his jet-black hair, spiked as usual with just enough gel to make him almost cool. He was too much of a geek to be genuinely cool, but he was getting there.
“Yeah.” He raked his fingers through it. “So, what’s up with you two?”
“Brooke feels fuzzy.”
He bounced around until he was facing us, walking backwards with his backpack slung over his shoulder, his brows drawn in concern. “Fuzzy? Really?”
“I didn’t say I felt fuzzy. I said the world has fuzzy edges.”
He looked around to test her theory then back at us. How he managed to walk backwards in this crowd was beyond me. And rather awe inspiring. If I’d tried that, I would soon resemble a pancake covered with lots of footprints.
He furrowed his brows again in thought. “I don’t think it’s so much fuzzy as nauseatingly yellow, a color that is supposed to calm us, I’m sure. But did you hear?” he asked, suddenly excited. “Joss Duffy and Cruz de los Santos got in a fight during third.”
Brooklyn pulled me to a stop, her expression animated. “What did I tell you? Joss and Cruz are best friends. Everything is turned upside down.”
As bad as I hated to admit it, she was right. I’d felt it too: A quake. A disturbance in the atmosphere. Everyone seemed to have short fuses lately. The slightest infraction set people off. We’d been warned about an impending cosmic war. Was this how it would begin?
With a sigh, I started for PE again. Maybe we were reading too much into it. Or maybe the moon was full. People did crazy things when the moon was full. And besides, I didn’t want everything to be turned upside down. I’d had enough of upside down when I was hit by that truck. When I was possessed by Satan’s second-in-command. When my parents disappeared.
Some days I was almost okay with the fact that a demon had slipped inside my body when I was six, nestled between my ribs, curled around my spine. Other days that fact caused me no small amount of distress. On those days, I walked with head down and eyes hooded as my vertebrae fused in the heat of uncertainty and my bones writhed in sour revulsion.
Today was one of those days.
I’d awoken in a panic to the sensation of being crushed, unable to escape an invisible force, unable to breathe. The remnants of a nightmare still ricocheted against the walls of my lungs, squeezing them until air became a precious but fleeting commodity. At first I thought I was having an asthma attack, then I realized it was only a dream. The dream.
And the dream was always the same. In it, I would float back to that day so long ago and inhale the beast all over again, his taste acidic, his flesh choking and abrasive. Since I was just a kid at the time, one would think it was a small demon, possibly a minion or a lower-level employee. Like a janitor. But I’d seen him that day. How his shoulders, as black as a starless sky, spanned the horizon. How his head reached the tops of the trees. “Small” was not an accurate descriptor.
And now, thanks to my pathetic need for sleep, I could relive that memory over and over. Yay, me. On the bright side, I’d ditched that other recurring dream I’d been having since I was five. The one where bugs scurried under my sheets and up my legs. That thing was messed up.
Still, if not for all that, Jared would never have come to Riley’s Switch. We may be only a tiny speck on the map of New Mexico, hidden among juniper trees and sage bushes in the middle of no and where, but we were important enough to warrant an extended visit from the Angel of Death. Surely that meant something in the grand scheme of things.
“And Cameron has been acting strange too,” Brooke continued, mentioning the fifth member of our posse, if you included Jared. Which I did. But I hadn’t seen Cameron in a couple of days, which was odd.
“That’s because Cameron has a crush on you,” I said without thinking. I cringed when Glitch’s eyes widened a fraction of an inch. He caught himself instantly and turned away.
“No, seriously,” she said, oblivious. “He keeps asking if I’m okay. If you’re okay. If Glitch is okay.”
Glitch whirled back around and glared, but Brooke missed it once again.
“We need to practice,” she said, pulling a compact mirror out of her backpack. “Try again to get a vision, only try harder this tim...

Ms. Jones stepped it up a bit in this second installment of Darklight series. There is more drama, action, and the plot definitely thickened. Death, Doom and Detention captured my attention right from the prologue until the heartrending end.

Lorelei McAlister has matured since getting to know her from Death and the Girl Next Door. She has taken in the reality of being the last Prophet from the bloodline of Arabeth rather well. She is developing her abilities to see visions from future and the past. Also, most of her memories from her past had come back, including how her parents disappeared. Unfortunately, as the prophecy gets closer to reality, there are people who would like to hurt her. There are non-believers/haters that will do everything to prevent the predictions from ever happening.

Like I said, Ms. Jones stepped it up a bit. There are more emotions in this installment and I admit to tearing up once or thrice. Ms. Jones had started this book with Lorelei's memories of how she lost her parents. Let me tell you, seeing chaos unfold through six year old Lorelei was just heartbreaking. And seeing her go through the emotions of being a teen and being the person to save the world was tough to see as well. She whined and complained but came through each time. It was nice to see her friends help with that as well. Brook and Cameron also having super natural powers and Jared being the sexy brooding Angel of Death are there to keep Lorelei grounded and safe. Their banters and comeback were just hilarious.

Along with Lorelei's maturity, we also see a bit of development in relationships in this book, which I loved! Her love continues for Azreal aka Jared, aka Angel of Death. They have more issues than a normal teen of course. Jared's past, emotions and even his powers have developed but I don't know if finding out his past will help with their relationship. He is every bit as loyal, in love and very alpha towards Lorelei but out of his control, he managed to break her heart...and mine. With one kiss, my heart dropped to the floor. Not only that we get to know Lorelei and Jared, we see more of Brook and Cameron, Glitch and would be gal, maybe. Love finally blooms. And the issue with Cameron and Glitch and Jared and Cameron was somewhat resolved.Lorelei's ' grandparent also has a lot more secrets up their sleeve and they are all about to blow up in their faces. Don't they know that honesty is the best policy when it comes to teenagers? It's never a boring day in this small town in New Mexico.

This book felt like a mash up of the TV series Smallville and Gillmore Girls. The characters are full of funny banters, secrets, preternatural beings they have to battle, young romance and cute boys to drool over. Without a surprise, Death, Doom and Detention is another brilliant read.

Thrilling Sequel, don't Miss!

Death, Doom and Detention just rocked my world! Darynda Jones one-ups the first installment to the Darklight series with a sequel that is darker, eerier, and filled to the brim with supernatural wonder.

In Death and the Girl Next Door Lorelei MacAlister welcomed the truth about everything supernatural that revealed itself in her world, from the truth about her parents' disappearance to the fact that there's powerful demon inside of her. Now she takes a few steps back hoping to walk into normal. Her relationship with her grandparents, the only family she believes she has left in the world, has turned sour, and ditto for her romance with the powerful Angel of Death, Jared Kovach. She's feeling the pressure to be the last prophet of Arabeth, the only one who can stop the impending war before it actually happens, and with good reason. She's always surrounded by her bodyguards, Cameron and Jared, and her best friend Brooklyn constantly pushes her to practice conjuring her visions. They all feel the invisible forces at work, altering the personalities of schoolmates and targeting Lorelei.

I really felt the suspense in this novel. Jones kept her secrets locked until it was time for them to be revealed. Then again, it's a continuing pattern for Jones to keep readers in the dark and never knowing what's really going on until the characters discover it. At that point they walk right into danger. On one hand, I love the suspense; I love that the plot continues to be unpredictable and completely fascinating. On the other hand, I'm not quite sure my heart can take not knowing what's coming right around the corner!

Death, Doom and Detention takes a more somber and tense tone. There's plenty of action and surprises, but always the underlying hint of danger. The threats Lorelei and her friends must face are shocking and scary, but they make the story oh, so thrilling!

Solid sequel - not as fun as Charley Davidson

DEATH, DOOM AND DETENTION was a good book that isn't perfect, but still a light, fun read. The underlying premise is different from a lot of paranormal YA I've read recently- instead of brooding werewolves or sexy vampires, we've got hot angels and terrifying ghosts. And while sometimes the premise verges on ridiculous, we still have some great characters, plenty of teenage angst and obviously, some supernatural drama.

If there is one thing Darynda Jones does well, it's great, realistic characters and witty dialogue. We've definitely got all of that here, mostly due to the three best friends, Lorelei, Brooklyn, and Glitch, and their two supernatural companions, Cameron and Jared. The teens all together are goofy and fun, and when Cameron and Jared weren't trying to kill each other (and even sometimes when they were), they were hysterical. The addition of the former "mean girl," Ashlee, to the group was also great, and shook things up a bit. A lot of the humor in this book is focused on the teens and their interactions with each other, which I really liked. I also like the mystery- I want to know more about Lorelei being the prophet, and I want to know how she is going to save the world. I'm kind of like Brooklyn in this book, I want Lorelei to keep using her abilities, as sometimes her visions were the coolest parts of a scene. And Lorelei coming to terms with the demon possessing her is interesting and compelling to watch. I wish there had been more scenes that dealt with that part of her.

I did like DEATH, DOOM AND DETENTION better than I liked DEATH AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, because sometimes book one is a bit out there, and expects a lot of suspension of disbelief while it it setting up the world and Lorelei's dilemma. I would recommend you read them in order, though, because I think reading the second one alone may be confusing.

My biggest complaint is how similar the Darklight series is to Jones' Charley Davidson series. Had I not read those already, I may have liked the Darklight series more than I did, since they just seem like a watered down version of the Charley books. As young adult, there are obviously some aspects that will be tamer than adult novels- like any kind of intimate interaction- but they just didn't seem as well rounded as they could have been. Plus, the ending is a bit predictable. The bad guy is pretty obvious from the moment he shows up and so you're just waiting for something to happen.

Despite my issues, I will be reading DEATH AND THE GIRL HE LOVES when it comes out. I have so many questions that I want answered, and DEATH, DOOM AND DETENTION ends on a huge cliffhanger, so I just have to know what happens!

A Very Well Written and Thourough

This Part A book (Up to the Rennisannce) is was a required text for my Western Civilizations Ancient-Rennisannce course at USU. It is very well written, thourough, and has some great aids throughout the book (For example: that goes a little deeper into the life of a typical farmer or monk in the 1300's, or a story of someon who lived through the plaugue...). I am a history major, so of course I loved it, but I think anyone who just wants to know a little more of how the western world came to be what it is today would find it an easy read and very helpful.
