Let Me Go (Archie Sheridan & Gretchen Lowell), by Chelsea Cain

"[A] masterful blend of psychological suspense and straight-up gore, chronicling the twisted bond between police detective Archie Sheridan and serial killer Gretchen Lowell."―Criminal Element

Detective Archie Sheridan just has to get through the next few days, then his birthday and Halloween will be over. But with escaped serial killer Gretchen Lowell on the loose, the investigation into the murder of a DEA agent demanding his attention, and journalist Susan Ward showing up at his apartment needing a favor, it's going to be a long weekend.

"Grabs you like a deadly undertow and doesn't let you go."―Parade magazine

Soon Archie finds himself crashing a masked ball on a private island owned by Jack Reynolds, a notorious local drug kingpin. By morning, Archie is back on painkillers, a guest is dead, and Archie quickly realizes that little is what it seems. One thing is clear: Gretchen is back, and Archie's nemesis and sometime lover has something special in mind for the birthday boy. Now, on Halloween Eve, with time running out and the life of someone close to Archie on the line, Archie knows his only chance is to give Gretchen exactly what she wants. But Gretchen will prove more horrifying, and unpredictable, than Archie ever could have imagined…in Let Me Go by Chelsea Cain.

"Gretchen Lowell isn't just the most fascinating villain…to appear in crime fiction in many, many years; she's also becoming a multifaceted character capable of engendering a much wider range of emotions than one would expect of somebody who enjoys carving up spleens."―Booklist (starred review)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* It figures that nonpareil serial killer Gretchen Lowell, on the loose since Kill You Twice (2012), would pick Halloween for a return trip to Portland, Oregon. After all, with all those revelers adorned in Beauty Killer masks, blond wigs, and red lipstick, no one will be able to tell the real Gretchen from the imitations. Except police detective Archie Sheridan, of course, on whose battered body Gretchen has done some of her best work, and who still can’t get Gretchen out of both his nightmares and sexual fantasies. But Archie has a lot on his mind. A DEA agent has been murdered, and it looks like the long-running sting operation aimed at a local drug lord may be in jeopardy. Hoping to learn more, Archie crashes the drug lord’s Halloween costume party, where he gets a late-night visit from Gretchen (or was that part just a fantasy?). Slowly Archie realizes that Gretchen has been stage-managing much of his recent life from afar, all leading up to a series of birthday surprises that put Archie’s pal, punky reporter Susan Ward, in grave danger. But here’s the thing: Cain knows she needs to keep playing with the dynamic between Gretchen and Archie—and even with our view of Gretchen—if this series is going to stay both fresh and exciting, and she always finds new ways to do it. Gretchen Lowell isn’t just the most fascinating villain (and certainly the most appealing serial killer) to appear in crime fiction in many, many years; she’s also becoming a multifaceted character capable of engendering a much wider range of emotions than one would expect of somebody who enjoys carving up spleens. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Cain’s previous Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell thrillers have routinely appeared on the New York Times bestseller lists, and the legion of fans who can’t get enough of the Beauty Killer will be lining up for more. --Bill Ott

Getting stale!
By Linda S. Dimezza
I love Chelsea Cain. I really do. Archie is an amazing character, flaws and all. And the other characters that this author created add to the joy of reading her series. But, really, Gretchen is not Spiderwoman or Wonder Woman or Cat Woman. She is just another serial killer who needs to be caught and put down like you would a rabid dog. I am sure that the author can create new stories for this wonderful cast of characters. But to continue with the Gretchen/Archie back-and-forth is getting rather boring. Archie needs to be free of this woman and continue on with his life. I am sure that there are other "psychopaths" roaming about that Archie and Company can apprehend. Hopefully, if there is another, Gretchen will be found and go away permanently.

Enough !?
By Deb
Like most other reviewers, I feel I have to state I do (did?) love this series. With the first book, I was hooked. But, it's getting very very stale. As a character, Archie is (or should be) too savy to continue with this Gretchen obsession. And Gretchen is becoming a caricature. And an annoying one, at that. She's lost the 'shock' factor and has become tiresome and predictable.
It almost felt as if the flash-backs were written in to fill space. They added nothing to the depth of the characters or the plot advancement.
The supporting cast has become the most interesting part of the stories. Move Archie away from Gretchen - get him back with his core group and solve some other murders.

THE MUSE HAS DESERTED CHELSEA CAIN!
By George Peabody
Cain is beating a dead horse as the saying goes, when she keeps reviving the evil Gretchen and aligning her with Archie, who, in my opinion lost his mind a couple of books ago. This book overdoes the sex, the perversion, and includes action that at times is so absurd as to be surreal. Even at the beginning of the story I lost interest in the entire scenario; it was mundane and unoriginal. Moreover, the story plods along just waiting for the next vulgar and boring development. It's time to go in other direction, probably with new characterizations. This book left a really bad taste in my psyche!
