About the Author
MICHAEL MEYER (Ph.D., University of Connecticut) has taught writing and literature courses for more than 30 years -- since 1981 at the University of Connecticut and before that at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the College of William and Mary. His scholarly articles have appeared in distinguished journals such as American Literature, Studies in the American Renaissance, and Virginia Quarterly Review. An internationally recognized authority on Henry David Thoreau, Meyer is a former president of the Thoreau Society and coauthor (with Walter Harding) of The New Thoreau Handbook, a standard reference source. His other books for Bedford/St. Martin's include The Bedford Introduction to Literature (2011); Poetry: An Introduction (2010), The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature (2009); and Thinking and Writing about Literature (2001).

It's everything I need for class.

Most class literature book are very dry and boring. This literature book is not, it gives one all the facts needed on every story it supplies and information about how to write stories, poems, essays in a very colorful way. Instead of straight-forward, just the facts format all the time this literature book has the author's opinion of the stories and how to write the essay, which allows for an entertaining read while you do homework.

Best way to learn how to write

At this moment, I think I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn how to write. Especially for new writers who might be overwhelmed with where to start. The combination of introduction to literature elements and further discussion of the use of those elements within examples is very successful.
I read this book for a low-level literature class, but my professor was known for her creative writing courses. As an English major, I completely understand why she had us read this text; its a very easy introduction to learning how to analyze writing. Because of this, I also think it's probably one of the best books a CW teacher could use to introduce new students to the craft. The book has a chapter for each specific element in literature and how it's used. There are always at least two examples of short stories, from well-known authors, to show how the element helps the story to succeed. Then there are discussion questions following each one that could definitely be used in an actual classroom.
The last portion of the book focuses on different forms of literature (poetry, plays, novels, etc), and how their specific form affects the story. So if your students are interested in more than just short stories, there's something for them, too.
I plan on using this book to help T.A. and tutor my beginning CW students.

Great for the price!

Was exactly what I needed for a college literature class. I also enjoyed some of the stories in it so much that I decided to keep the book.
