Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. He is also the puzzlemaster on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday and is founder and director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. He has edited countless books of crossword puzzles, Sudoku, KenKen, and all manner of brain-busters.

I'm enjoying this nifty book!

I've acquired several new crossword books recently. One thing I have found is that it's often hard to know what you are getting before you buy a book -- Have the puzzles already been in another book? How hard or easy are the puzzles? Is the print tiny? Is the paper crummy?
This book contains EVERY New York Times puzzle published by the paper in 2007. This means that there will probably be duplication if you have some of the other NYT books that cover a broad range of dates. None of my NYT "Favorites," "Sundays" or other compilation books include 2007 puzzles, so no problem. (If you aren't sure, look on the colophon pages of your books -- it will tell when the puzzles you have already got were published.)
I enjoy the New York Times puzzles: the Mondays and Tuesdays that I can do very quickly, the Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays that make me think a bit, and the the Fridays and Saturdays that are a challenge for me. This book has an equal amount of every difficulty level. Just like the newspaper.
The print size is EXACTLY the same as when the puzzles appeared in the newspaper. If you need large print, it's not for you.
The paper is an average-light weight and is not glossy. I do the puzzles in pen and there's no smearing and the worked puzzle doesn't "show through" on the reverse. Good enough for me!
Finally, it's 365 puzzles. It's thick. It's bound like a paperback novel. It won't lay flat on its own. The first column on the Sunday puzzles is too close to the binding, so I think many people are going to want to tear or cut out the puzzles to work on them. I don't like tearing them out, so the one star I've withheld on the review is for printing those Sundays so close to the binding.

Just What I Wanted

Shortz's collection of Times' crossword puzzles is just what I was looking for--challenging puzzles, but not leaving me feeling like my education was all in vain. I HATE when that happens. Really--I wanted puzzles for my lazy days--and to stir up aging memory cells, but not too demanding. Just the right amount of work and brain power required. Nice.

Could The Print Be Any Smaller?

I was very disappointed that the print is smaller than average size.
One should not have to search for "large print" when ordering crossword puzzles.
