The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom, by Margarita Engle

It is 1896. Cuba has fought three wars for independence and still is not free. People have been rounded up in reconcentration camps with too little food and too much illness. Rosa is a nurse, but she dares not go to the camps. So she turns hidden caves into hospitals for those who know how to find her.

Black, white, Cuban, Spanish―Rosa does her best for everyone. Yet who can heal a country so torn apart by war? Acclaimed poet Margarita Engle has created another breathtaking portrait of Cuba.

The Surrender Tree is a 2009 Newbery Honor Book, the winner of the 2009 Pura Belpre Medal for Narrative and the 2009 Bank Street - Claudia Lewis Award, and a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Often, popular knowledge of Cuba begins and ends with late-20th-century textbook fare: the Cuban Revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and Fidel Castro. The Surrender Tree, however, transports readers to another, though no less tumultuous, era. Spanning the years 1850–1899, Engle's poems construct a narrative woven around the nation's Wars for Independence. The poems are told in alternating voices, though predominantly by Rosa, a "freed" slave and natural healer destined to a life on the lam in the island' s wild interior. Other narrators include Teniente Muerte, or Lieutenant Death, the son of a slave hunter turned ruthless soldier; José, Rosa's husband and partner in healing; and Silvia, an escapee from one of Cuba's reconcentration camps. The Surrender Tree is hauntingly beautiful, revealing pieces of Cuba's troubled past through the poetry of hidden moments such as the glimpse of a woman shuttling children through a cave roof for Rosa's care or the snapshot of runaway Chinese slaves catching a crocodile to eat. Though the narrative feels somewhat repetitive in its first third, one comes to realize it is merely symbolic of the unending cycle of war and the necessity for Rosa and other freed slaves to flee domesticity each time a new conflict begins. Aside from its considerable stand-alone merit, this book, when paired with Engle's The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano (Holt, 2006), delivers endless possibilities for discussion about poetry, colonialism, slavery, and American foreign policy.—Jill Heritage Maza, Greenwich High School, CT

From Booklist
*Starred Review* As in The Poet Slave of Cuba (2006), Engle’s new book is written in clear, short lines of stirring free verse. This time she draws on her own Cuban American roots, including stories from her grandmother, to describe those who fought in the nineteenth-century Cuban struggle for independence. At the center is Rosa, a traditional healer, who nurses runaway slaves and deserters in caves and other secret hideaways. Her husband, José, a freed slave, also speaks, and so does a refugee child, whom Rosa teaches to be a healer. Then there is the vicious slave hunter known as Lieutenant Death; his collection of ears is an unforgettable image of brutality (“shown as proof that the runaway slave / died fighting, resisting capture”). The switching perspectives personalize the dramatic political history, including the establishment of the world’s first “reconcentration camps” to hold prisoners, as well as the role of slave owners who freed their slaves and joined the resistance against Spain. Many readers will be caught by the compelling narrative voices and want to pursue the historical accounts in Engle’s bibliography. Grades 6-12. --Hazel Rochman

Struggles and Sacrifices
By Little Willow
Cuba's three wars for independence raged on as Rosa la Bayamesa, a nurse, tended to the sick and the injured. Using medicine made from plants, she helped the fallen soldiers, the children, even those who fought for the other side.

This verse novel is based on actual events and people, and it follows Rosa's life from 1850 to 1899. Even when they were pursued by her enemies, Rosa and her husband Jose never stopped helping others. Jose and a few other supporting characters, such as a little girl named Silvia, step in from time to time to share a poem, but Rosa is the driving force behind the story. We could all learn something from her selflessness and determination.

A great read for all ages.
By Lindsey Miller
It's not surprising that the Surrender Tree won so many awards, including a Newbery Honor. The language is beautiful, and the story itself is one that is not often told. Especially for an American audience, this text reveals a new type of Cuba that predates the Communist revolution that sparked an arms race during the Kennedy presidency. This is a Cuba much like the early America or Jamaica--a country of people who want to have their own independence, who want to live freely as one people, no slavery, all equals. It's interesting to see the story from so many perspectives, and I think that Engle adroitly switches through the first person narratives with ease. Often writers will struggle to create variance in the voices and speech patterns of their characters, but each of the four sounds different from each other, not only in style and rhythm, but also in their character--hopes, dreams, loves, actions, driving forces. I read it twice, and I would recommend it to all readers.

Do NOT Surrender your ears to the audiobook of The Surrender Tree
By Latino Children's Lit Professor and Librarian
The Surrender Tree is a magnificently, wonderful book that should find its way into the hands of upper-elementary, middle, and high school readers. The print version of Engle's novel-in-prose holds great potential for opening young minds to the injustices of the world.

The audiobook version ruins the book. The main reader for the character of Rosa mispronounces Spanish words and is very monotone. Unless you want to discourage children from listening to audiobooks, steer them far away from this edition towards the print version of the book.

Amazing parable
By Bruce Blackie
I first read this book about the age of 10 in New Zealand. Many years later I walked into a tutorial room as an adult student in the University of Sydney. Apart from the tutor I was the first to arrive. The tutorial was to be on Milton's Paradise Lost and so I was asked how I was going with the essay. I confessed that I had temporarily put it aside in order to rediscover the delights of this book. The tutor's reaction to my apparent lack of commitment to the great Milton was totally surprising. Instead of bemused disapproval and ignorance of this little masterpiece he brightened up and also admitted great admiration and love for this stand-out from the enitire Moomin series. By way of proof he even took out a copy from the top draw of his desk! Our animated conversation about Moominland Midwinter was all too soon cut short by the arrival of the other students and we had to return to Paradise Lost and a level of joy in the room faded into a collective consideration of so called weightier matters. As a frequenter of book shops over the years I have never encountered any copy of the Moomin books, new or used in Australia which makes the informal tutorial all the more remarkable as they were all released in New Zealand when I was young.

I agree with the reviewers who lament that many children are now deprived of these books and this one in particular. I have read almost the entire series but this book has been a life-long friend in fact one of the two books I would most treasure to read and read again. The other is DC Lau's translation of Tao Te Ching.

This is my first review and could be my last but I'm glad to share this in particular as how the morning radio intones that Atlas Shrugged is now an Amazon top seller. A tome for our age but only for the lost and confused. Moominland Midwinter would be dammed with faint praise to be mentioned in same breath. I confess this is my reaction to the radio report, ha, how perverse is my inner libraian.

Moominland Midwinter really is magic.

Brave New World
By sweetmolly
Moomintroll did what no other Moomin in the history of the world has ever done. He woke up in the middle of his Winter Sleep. He sees a world he never saw before. He is by turns frightened, lonely, persevering, and at times just a mite irritated. Thus begins this charming tale told with subtlety and grace by the talented Tove Jansson.
The creatures may be strange and wondrous, but somehow we feel as if we might have met them before someplace. Haven't we all known someone like the Hemulen: large, cheerful, energetic without a mean bone in his body who always wants us to enjoy the cold brisk air and strenuous sports with him-and why is it we don't exactly like him very well?
The descriptions of Moomin world are lovely and fanciful. Early spring clouds are "scatterbrained" rushing along. The Great Cold is beautiful, but ominous. This is a book for all ages. It saddens me my children are not young enough to be read to anymore. The Moomins, like Winnie the Pooh, are perfect read-alouds with assured discussions afterward.
A lovely book. Highly recommended.

Truly good
By kennedy19
An imcomporable masterpiece of quiet, subtle children's literature, perhaps only equalled by other books in the series such as "Moominpappa at Sea" or the inexplicably out of print "Moominvalley in November." A perfect read for winter, embodying both its beauty and loneliness, and the way in which good souls can muddle through it, flaws and all. Sophisticated, sensitive children will most appreciate this unique world.

From Publishers Weekly
In Johansen's gripping 11th Eve Duncan novel (after Chasing the Night), the first of a trilogy, the forensic sculptor zeros in on the kidnapper and serial killer who years earlier abducted and murdered her seven-year-old daughter, Bonnie. Eve's obsession with the case draws in her good friend, CIA agent Catherine Ling, as well as her lover and would-be protector, police detective Joe Quinn. In spite of their problematic relationships due to Eve's protracted and intense search, Ling and Quinn work together to call in favors and pursue every possible lead. Their joint efforts uncover a cadre of sharply drawn malefactors who may be deeply involved, notably emotionally unstable John Gallo, Eve's former lover and Bonnie's father, who spent six years as a prisoner in North Korea. The explosive finale set in the Wisconsin woods leads to an emotional cliffhanger, as Johansen deftly baits the hook for the next volume. 400,000 first printing. (Apr.)

From Booklist
After searching for years over the course of Johansens popular, long-running series, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan is finally close to solving the mystery of daughter Bonnies murder. With the help of her CIA friend Catherine Ling, Eve narrows the field of suspects down to either Paul Black or John Gallo, both of whom work for a corrupt military intelligence officer. Paul has a history of killing children, and John is mentally unstable after a stint in a North Korean prison. The specter of Gallo forces Eve to relive her tumultuous past, growing up in the projects of Atlanta, intent on staying out of trouble until she meets John. He was about to join the army to become a Ranger, but first they had a brief yet highly charged affair, which left Eve pregnant with Bonnie. Now nothing will stop Eve from learning the truth about her daughters fate as Johansen launches a trilogy that takes the reader on an action-packed journey filled with killers and heroes, leaving readers on tenterhooks for Quinn (July 2011) and Bonnie (October 2011). HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: With a seven-figure marketing campaign and 400,000-copy print runs for each title, Johansens next three titles will be hot. --Patty Engelmann

Advance Warning ... Cliffhanger Ending ...
By Alex S
For all of us who have been following the saga of Eve Duncan, Iris Johansen has developed a trilogy of "closers" ... letting us have closure with Eve and Joe concerning what happened with her daughter Bonnie.

In this first novel, Eve (the next two are Quinn and Bonnie), we are taken back to the very beginning, before Bonnie was even born, when we meet Gallo, about to join the army, and follow his intense relationship with Eve ... and the conception of Bonnie.

When Eve is confronted with the possibility that it is Gallo, Bonnie's own father, who kidnapped and killed Bonnie, she had to find out. The question throughout the novel is whether Gallo is being honest with Eve, or whether he is leading her into his own trap. And yet, those who know Eve will realize that she can't take the chance. If she can find out what happened to Bonnie, maybe she will finally have closure after so many years.

The question throughout the book is the same as in all Eve Duncan novels - who killed Bonnie - in this novel we look at Gallo; Black, a psychopathic pedophile killer who is an assassin for the CIA; and Queen, a rogue CIA agent who controls both of them.

As I said in the title, it ends with a cliff-hanger, leaving the door open for the next novel ... with someone important dead, someone else critically injured, someone missing ... and questions left unanswered.

Iris Johansen has promised "everything will finally be answered" in this trilogy, but I do have one hope and a question of my own. Will Eve be content with the answers if and when she finally holds Bonnie's bones in her hands and has a chance to bury them? Will she be able to bury the past? Will she have the chance to grow into someone else, someone "beyond Bonnie"?

Like all Eve Duncan fans, I am grateful that this series is coming to this explosive climax, and look forward to the final two novels.

*** Special Note *** If you have not yet read the last novel about Eve, Chasing the Night, you will want to read it before this particular novel, since it incorporates the same characters, and while the novel stands independently, you will enjoy it much more with the background information from Chasing the Night.

ouch. truly disappointing.
By audrey frances
This is the 11th Eve Duncan book by talented author Iris Johansen. I had read 5 or 6 of the series but lost interest and hadn't read any for a while when I saw that "the mystery (of Eve's daughter Bonnie's abduction and murder) will finally be solved", so I decided to check it out.

Ouch. I feel like I got burned. Johansen's writing is still good (except when the protagonist -- who, we are often reminded, is tough and practical -- becomes rhapsodic about Bonnie), but the story has gone off the rails .... and the solution COMES AT THE END OF A TRILOGY (of which this is the first volume)! I thought this was a pretty tacky marketing ploy.

I thought reveals were clunky and we are obviously being set up for a shuffling of partners in the future.

SPOILER ALERT: Throughout the series Eve has communicated with her daughter through dreams and hallucinations and apparently, while I was not reading the series, it became clear that Bonnie is a bona fide ghost. Not only that, but she visits Joe Quinn, Eve's boyfriend, too. This reminds me of the deep disappointment I felt when The Stand turned into a post-apocalyptic religious war.

As usual, the characters are interesting, but not enough for me to read any more of the series.

"If Adam and Eve hadn't ate from the tree...we'd all be naked." Famous quotes
By michael a. draper
Eve Duncan is one of Iris Johansen's ongoing characters. She's a well respected forensic sculptor whose work is in demand by many police departments.

She's been with her lover, Detective Joe Quinn of years and still has the heartache from when her seven-year-old daughter, Bonnie, was kidnapped two years ago. Some think that Bonnie is dead. However, Eve's friend, Catherine Ling, of the CIA asks her if she's considered if Bonnie's father, John Gallo, couldn't have anything to do with it.

Eve is startled. She thought that Gallo was dead, killed while serving on active duty.

The story flashes back to the time when Eve was fifteen. We learn about her childhood and some of the questions about her past are answered.

She met Gallo when she was growing up in Atlanta. Her mother was a self indulgent drug user. When Eve was fifteen, a group of local hoods were assaulting her after she went to the help of one of her girlfriends. The situation was becoming worse when Gallo appeared and dispatched the young punks. Gallo became attracted to her for her gutsy manner in sticking up for her girlfriend and attempts to convince Eve to enter a romantic relationship with him.

The novel portrays Eve's fighting spirit and goals to overcome her poverty and become successful.

The story tells of what happened to Gallo and how he reappeared after serving in advanced unit in the military. He developed his skills with undercover work and unfortunately, he also made enemies. Although he moved on with his life, he never forgot Eve or the daughter they had together. When Eve learns that Gallo survived the war, Eve feels that she must find out, for herself, if he had anything to do with her daughter's kidnapping.

Her search for her kidnapped child also gives hope for parents of missing children.

I enjoyed the novel. This is an ongoing character and there are still a number of questions unanswered. This just makes the reader want to come back to read more about Eve Duncan and her kidnapped daughter.

I like these ken ken puzzles. If you are a fan of suduko, you'll like these also. My only criticism of this book is it really goes from easy to impossibly hard puzzles. I'd prefer that there are some in the middle.

Necessary Advice Shared in An Easy-to-Follow Guide
By The Simply Luxurious Life
With an ever quickening pace, our society while very productive, seems to have abandoned proper etiquette, or at least has become far too casual in how we interact with each other forgetting boundaries, privacy and the like. Patricia Rossi's new book Everyday Etiquette: How to Navigate 101 Common and Uncommon Social Situations provides specific helpful advice for the common (manners at the table) and uncommon (social media) social situations we all must manage whether we are immersed in the technological world or not.

A few topics and glimpses of her advice regarding etiquette:

*Table Manners

o A visual description of an informal and formal table setting
o Bread course - when oil is on the table for everyone to use, spoon out a serving of oil onto your plate. Don't dip your bread into the common bowl.

*Social Media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Blogs)

o Facebook - avoid oversharing personal information and private emotions
o LinkedIn - Any professional requests on Facebook should be redirected to LinkedIn - keep Facebook for friends and family only.

*Business Matters

o View the design of your business cards like a resume
o Casual Fridays - set yourself apart and always dress professionally

*Out and About

o Museums - the three feet rule, give the artwork the personal space you would give a person to whom you are having a conversation with
o Dating - the person who does the inviting does the paying, however it is okay to offer to pay half

Sports

o Never use an iPod while riding a bike unless it's stationary
o running or walking - keep to the right unless you are going to pass

Encouragement During Tough Times

o When learning of a friend's divorce, listen and never take sides. Let them know you are there if they need someone to talk to.
o Funerals - do something, but remember that doing nothing is not an option

Petiquette

o Dog Park - if your dog digs a hole, fill it up ASAP
o Travel - have your dog groomed before they travel - they will feel better and so will you and your travel companions

The above is just a sampling of what Rossi offers throughout her book. The specific directions on proper etiquette coupled with illustrations when necessary and her own person experiences shared throughout (dinner at the White House for example) help to create a book that is hands on and applicable to anyone who is trying to successfully navigate in a world that is constantly on the go and progressing quicker than it seems we can keep up. The key to success is to lay a sound groundwork and that comes in the form of proper etiquette.

As an etiquette coach, consultant and public speaker, Patricia Rossi has a national syndicated "Manners Minute" television segments that air weekly on NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC and other affiliates throughout the US. She also has a weekly newspaper column in a Florida newspaper and is Twitter's #1 etiquette professional (@PatriciaRossi).

A great refresher course! And an easy/quick read!
By Sarah860
This book was short and sweet. It is a great refresher course for anyone interested in current etiquette (no 18th century rules in here!). The book really demonstrates how etiquette can promote strong relationships. The author shows how etiquette can get you ahead in life.

The book opens with an "etiquette quiz" and concludes with a "Q&A" portion. There are sample sympathy and thank-you letters included in the book. The majority of the book is a list of etiquette for common (and not so common) situations.

Here are some things that I learned from the book.

-The proper place to wear a name tag is on the right shoulder (sounds obvious but I always wore it on the left shoulder.)

-When inviting a guest to lunch, you should pick the restaurant as it puts too much pressure on the guest to decide (e.g. the guest may not know how formal or informal).

-When male and female business businesses colleagues arrive at a door, whoever is closest or arrives first opens the door.

-When introducing someone to a family member, you should typically say the other person's name first.
-In social situations, men are generally introduced to women (e.g. "Sarah this is Bob.")

-Never shake hands while in a seated or subservient position. Stand up, then shake hands. If a barrier is between you and the other person, such as a table, come around from the barrier for the handshake, never lean across it.

-Never ask someone "what they do"....rather ask how they spend their time.

-You should respond to facebook messages within 24 hours.

Overall, this book was really easy to read and it was a quick read as well. Highly suggest!

Fun to Read and Full of Advice
By MomofTwo
I love this book! I always thought etiquette lessons were boring and stuffy, but Patricia Rossi's writing style is funny and engaging. Her advice is easy to understand and so worthwhile. I enjoy going to high level networking and social events, but in the past I've felt intimidated in terms of proper etiquette. It's such a relief knowing I now have a roadmap to navigate all kinds of social situations. This book is a must read for anyone looking to shine in business and life in general!
(I also think it would make a perfect gift for college grads).

Whirligig, by Paul Fleischman

With a family always on the move, popularity and the ability to fit in quickly are vital to Brent Bishop's high school survival. When he blows his chances with the girl of his dreams in front of everyone, he's devastated. Brent tries to end it all in a fatal car crash, but instead he finds an unlikely beginning. He's sent on a journey of repentance―a cross-country trip building whirligigs. His wind toys are found by people in need: a Maine schoolgirl yearning for her first love, a Miami street-sweeper desperate for peace and quiet, a kid in Washington who just wants to play baseball, and a San Diego teenager dealing with loss. Brent's whirligigs bring hope to others, but will they be able to heal the wounds deep inside himself?

From Publishers Weekly
After a drunk teenage boy kills a girl while driving, his life is transformed by fulfilling a request of the girl's mother. PW's boxed review called Fleischman's novel "stellar." Ages 12-up. (Nov.)
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up?Vapid, self-absorbed, status-conscious Brent attends a party at which he suffers a very public rejection by the girl he's been lusting after. Drunk, furious, and unable to deal with his humiliation, he tries to kill himself on the trip home, but his reckless driving kills a stranger instead: a lovely, talented, motivated, high school senior. Though Brent's parents would like to minimize his sense of guilt and his punishment, Brent himself is tormented and longs to make some restitution. The court arranges a meeting with his victim's mother, who asks Brent to "make four whirligigs, of a girl that looks like Lea....Then set them up in Washington, California, Florida, and Maine?the corners of the United States." The brilliant Fleischman has written a beautifully layered, marvelously constructed novel that spins and circles in numerous directions. Readers follow the creation of each whirligig and its impact on one or more observer: a young violinist, a Holocaust survivor, a Puerto Rican street-sweeper. They also follow Brent's journey by bus to the corners of the country and of his journey within himself to find a balance between recrimination and reconciliation. Though Whirligig has linear movement, it impresses readers more with its sense of interconnected spiraling. Brent's skill and inventiveness grow with each whirligig. The emotional responses of those who see his creations likewise vary: some find joy, some peace, some equilibrium. There is enormous vitality and hopefulness expressed in this brief masterwork.?Miriam Lang Budin, Mt. Kisco Public Library, NY

From Booklist
Gr. 7^-10. A nonlinear narrative spun out from actions, both good and bad, and their ever-circling consequences, Fleischman's latest is an unusual construction, its parts fitting together in delicate balance, much like those of the whirligig of the title and the story's central metaphor. Driving home drunk from a party, Brent tries to kill himself by letting go of the wheel but instead kills another teenager. Her grief-stricken mother doesn't seek revenge; rather, she hands Brent a 45-day Greyhound bus pass and tells him that, since her daughter Lea loved whirligigs, she wants Brent to build four, each with Lea's face and name, and plant them in the four corners of the U.S.--Washington State, California, Maine, and Florida. Brent's journey of expiation across that summer alternates with beautiful, quicksilver stories, told in different time frames, of how the whirligigs that he builds and leaves behind profoundly affect the lives of a too-studious eighth-grader and her best friend in Maine, a Puerto Rican street sweeper in Miami, an adopted Korean boy in Washington, and a teenager and her dying grandmother in San Diego. Brent never becomes quite real; his struggle with tools, directions, and sorrow sometimes is pulled under by its own weight, but the story as a whole and the inner sense of self that Brent achieves through his experiences are mesmerizing. The language of the whirligig stories gleams and soars: a metaphor of movement, dance, laughter, and irrepressible life. Like the ritual journey in Sharon Creech's Walk Two Moons (1994) and Uncle Ob's whirligigs in Cynthia Rylant's Missing May (1992), loss, fear, and guilt in Fleischman's story find a universally recognizable shape. A Harsh Reality of Decision-Making
By EnglishTeacher
"We can never know all the consequences of our acts." What a statement! These consequences can be good or bad--it all depends on the direction we choose throughout our lives. Through a tragic accident, Brent Bishop, found these consequences to be an unwanted invitation to the realities of life. Although Whiligig has a heavy lesson for us all, you will find it to be an enjoyable read. It is fast paced and allows you to look at the effects of one decision and how it changes the lives of many different people.
Brent Bishop's family has moved to Chicago because of his father's new job. With his father's increase in salary, Brent is able to go to a private school for the first time. But his new high school does not welcome Brent like he had hoped for. He found himself playing the all-to-familiar game of tyring to fit in with the popular crowd. One night at a party, Brent finds that fitting in with the popular crowd leaves him with the feeling of being rejected. Brent's feelings of rejection take him on a journey which meets a tragic fate.
It's through this tragedy that Brent is forced to find meaning in life. Brent finds forgiveness and a new hope for the future by traveling to the four corners of the country experimenting with his new skills in carpentry.
Sometimes some of the most important lessons are learned through the expense of a tragedy. Paul Fleischman gives us a chance to reflect on how our decisions in life can change us in a split second. But even when we make bad decisions, there is always a lesson to be learned and our lives can more forward. Fleischman also shows us the harsh reality that our decisions not only effect us as an individual but the decision effects the people around us.
This book is great for junior high students who are looking forward to going to high school. It is also good for high school students who are beginning to make life-changing decisions. Plus, there is a lesson on forgiveness for adults. A book is always good when it can target such a varied audience.

Piece by Piece, A Beautiful Read
By Mary Beth Richardson
Brent Bishop can never fit in, so he tries to kill himself. Driving home from a party where he is totally humiliated, Brent deliberately crashes his car. He lives, but takes another's life. A young woman, Lea, dies in the accident, & her mother wants only one thing from Brent. He must build four whirligigs in Lea's likeness & place them in the four corners of the United States.
Brent makes his whirligigs much like Paul Fleischman constructs his heartwarming novel. The story moves seamlessly back & forth between Brent's journey to piece his life together, & glimpses into the lives of the fragile people who encounter each whirligig. Their stories in each simple chapter build a satisfying & uplifting whole, just like Brent's creations. This tale of redemption & restoration is a thing of beauty that will bring any reader joy.

Excellent Young Adult Book With A Memorable Message
By Susan K. Schoonover
WHIRLIGIG starts out like so many other young adult books. Brent is a shallow high school junior who really wants to fit in with the popular crowd. He drinks too much at a party, a pretty girl he has a crush on publicly humiliates him and as result he makes a stupid decision that results in the death of a teenage girl in another car whom he has never met. Then the book takes a highly unusual and creative turn. As part of his probation he meets with the dead girl's mother and she makes the strange request that Brent travel to the four corners of the United States (Florida, Maine, California and Washington) and erect a whirligig in each state in memory of her daughter. This request does strain credibility and the book takes a turn to fable instead of realistic fiction at this point. In nonlinear chapters Fleischman has a person (one from each state) whose life is changed by seeing one of Brent's whirligigs narrate their story. In other chapters Brent's cross country Greyhound bus tour is described with special focus on the cirumstances in which he builds and places the four whirligigs. There is a strong theme throughout the book of how the consequences of one's actions effect others. In continuation of this theme Brent briefly meets numerous people on his travels who influence him in their short time together and help him grow to be a good person. This is a very quick read and though I can see how it could be confusing to some the patient reader will soon see the book's pattern and be well rewarded. Highly recommended for middle school students and up as well as adults.

AWESOME BOOK FOR WRITING ESSAYS AND REPORTS!!
By RR
I started a new english class at school and I havent been in an english class in many years, so I thought this book was going to be boring and useless. However, going through this book in class has helped me sooooo much! Because of this book i've been receiving awesome grades on all my essays and research papers. It helps you with different style formats for writing different papers. I was thinking about re-selling it back on amazon but I am keeping this book. This book will help me through out my life!! I just have one complaint, the coil binding rips the papers easily! im very careful with mine and have seen some tears in the pages, but its something that I can live with.

A MUST for College Students, and should be for any learner in life!
By Wanderlusterer
I was required to have this book for both Writing in the Liberal Arts classes when I first started college. I was eager to sell it after the courses was over. Big mistake. I have since then purchased another copy, and plan on keeping it forever. This book serves as a refresher course for students who have taken any English class, and will help them to write better.

Used and older books of this copy are just fine if you are skeptical about paying $40.00 for a brand new copy. Just be aware that there are important revisions, and you should find out what they are.
