About the Author
Susan Todd graduated from Smith College and was an elementary school teacher for many years before becoming head of the Heath School in Heath, Massachusetts. She was a founding editor of Parents' Choice magazine and a contributing editor of FamilyFun magazine. Susan lives in Ashfield, Massachusetts.
Carol Purington has published two books of haiku and three books of tanka. She lives on a multigeneration farm in Colrain, Massachusetts.

A Collection of Poems to Touch All Hearts

I love Morning Song because it brings the joys of birth and childhood into the context of my life as only poetry (and great prose) can do. I am a single woman with no children of my own by choice. I believe in the concept of all children belonging to all of us as a human family. My highest praise for this book is that it really speaks to the direct experience of love and pain through parenthood in a manner that I can relate to and enjoy. The poems selected will touch all hearts and create many a smile. I am happy too that "Mother Nature" is well represented. A wonderful collection - something for everyone.

Seeing Parenthood Whole and through the sharpest medium

Morning Song: Poems for New ParentsFirst, an acknowledgement of potential bias: Susan Todd is my sister, I'm a huge fan of Carol Purington and her work, and three poems/translations of mine are in Morning Song. What makes Susan & Carol's work unique is their decision to present the love, labor and emotions of parenting whole, uncensored, and in the sharpest and most enduring medium ever invented: poetry.

For old parents, too

Morning Song's subtitle is Poems for New Parents, but as a grandmother I can say this is a book for experienced parents, aunts, uncles, friends and anyone who has a child in their life. The poems begin at the beginning and do take us to the end, with lots of life, playing learning and imagining, in between. One woman I met said her children were too old, 3 and 5, for this book to engage her. I said she better get a copy quick because she'd need a little help with Wisdom and Courage. We all need help with Wisdom and Courage - and maybe a few Manners as described by Elizabeth Bishop. I must also say the cover is perfect!
