You don't have time to watch a crow.

But we're here . . . and here . . . and there.

We poke our beaks in everywhere.

Crows can be noisy. They can be nosy and bold, too, which some people find annoying. But if you are lucky enough to live in a place where crows roost, you know they can also be funny, ingenious, and beautiful.

Beautiful to look at and fun to read aloud, this book created by Sheila Keenan and Kevin Duggan will make imaginations soar as high as the crow flies.

A murder of crows swoops through city streets and over the heads of pedestrians as the birds scavenge for food. They find it in a dog’s bowl and on the street, and they even manage to “finagle a big piece of the pigeon’s bagel.” They also have fun playing a game of midair catch with a straw and posing picturesquely in a cemetery. As the sun sets, their numbers swell, and they take to the forests just in time to disappear into darkness. While there is no driving narrative in this lovely offering, there is a satisfying sense of a journey, and Keenan’s clever, rhyming lines will appeal to young ears, even as attentive readers will be able to extrapolate some of the playful behavioral characteristics of the titular corvids. Duggan’s deeply grained imagery, meanwhile, adds a sense of majesty as viewers swoop along with the crows over buildings, down streets, beneath glowing clouds, and through a sunset that practically generates warmth off the pages. A lighthearted look at the often ominously portrayed avians. Preschool-Grade 1. --Jesse Karp

Review

“First-time illustrator Duggan's images mix static calm with dynamism, tranquil cityscapes with speeding cars. His portraits of crows and their antics are faithful and careful, and he makes especially effective use of panels to convey sequences of events. It's more of a naturalist's journal than a nonfiction reference--the scenes were inspired by crow behavior the husband-and-wife team witnessed firsthand. . . .Readers should look more closely at crows after they read Keenan and Duggan's book, but not before lingering over the illustrations.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Keenan and Duggan have created a dandy introduction to the raucous birds. Speaking in short, rhyming couplets, the avian narrator walks readers through an urban neighborhood as it explains how crows steal food, mess up car windows, and keep warm by flying through the city calling loudly during daylight hours, then roosting together in leafless trees on cold fall and winter nights. . . .This lovely example of picture-book design–a beautiful meld of text and illustrations–deserves a place on both school and public library shelves.” ―School Library Journal

“A helpful addition to the nature shelf, especially for its uncommon focus on urban birds.” ―Kirkus

“This could be useful as an introduction to a nature study lesson or as a poetic part of a bird-themed story session.” ―BCCB

In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, by James Keene, Hillel Levin

Featured on Dateline and CNN, the true story of a young man destined for greatness on the football field―until a few wrong turns led him to a ten-year prison sentence. He was offered an impossible mission: Coax a confession out of a fellow inmate, a serial killer, and walk free.

Jimmy Keene grew up outside of Chicago. Although he was the son of a policeman and rubbed shoulders with the city's elite, he ended up on the wrong side of the law and was sentenced to ten years with no chance of parole.

Just a few months into his sentence, Keene was approached by the prosecutor who put him behind bars. He had convicted a man named Larry Hall for abducting and killing a fifteen-year-old. Although Hall was suspected of killing nineteen other young women, there was a chance he could still be released on appeal. If Keene could get him to confess to two murders, there would be no doubt about Hall's guilt. In return, Keene would get an unconditional release from prison. But he could also get killed.

A story that gained national notoriety, this is Keene's powerful tale of peril, violence, and redemption.

In the late 1990s, Keene, a policeman’s son, was busted for dealing drugs. He wound up with a sentence that put him behind bars for a minimum of 10 years, but less than a year into the sentence, he had an unexpected visitor: the prosecutor who put him in prison. The prosecutor had also convicted another man, a murderer, and he suspected there were a lot of bodies still unaccounted for. He wanted Keene to go undercover and get the killer to confess; in return, Keene would be set free. Keene and coauthor Levin structure the book like a mystery novel, dramatizing events that Keene didn’t observe firsthand, and telling the story in the third person (“Jimmy nonchalantly grabbed it with his cuffed hands . . . .”). It’s a clever way to narrate a true-crime tale, more involving, somehow, than a straight first-person account might have been. Recommend this fascinating, suspenseful book to readers of both true crime and crime fiction. --David Pitt

I read it for Jessica....
By Jennifer Wardrip
Very hard for me to read this one. I grew up with Jessica Roach, the girl Larry Hall was eventually convicted of murdering. She was four years younger than I was; I was 18 when she went missing. We grew up in the same very small town (Georgetown, IL, population 3,600), belonged - at the time - to the same very tight-knit religious sect (Jehovah's Witnesses), and I never in a million years believed something like that could happen in my town, to someone I knew. The story saddened me, but knowing that Mr. Hall is in prison for the rest of his life brings some measure of relief.

I admit that I picked up the book for Jessica's story, but I was sucked in by the ups and downs of the author's personal history. He was a young man who paid dearly for his mistakes, but in the end, doing what he did to help bring justice for Jessica and Larry Hall's other victims is truly marvelous.

Kudos to James Keene for his bravery. Jessica would thank you if she could.

Unique, original, incredible
By Robb O'Brien
Jimmy Keene's unique and original story combined with Hillel Levin's investigative and explicitly detailed writing makes "In with the Devil" a true page turner. One would think this is fiction...it is not, although I found myself continually wondering how the story would end.

Levin goes to great lengths to give readers the stories within the story with his unbiased descriptions of the main characters lives and upbringings. You can feel the characters' emotions and understand the reasons behind their behavior.

In addition, the serial killer myths Levin disposes of are both shocking and upsetting. Do you realize their is no central serial killer or missing persons database that the FBI or other state law enforcement agencies can share? Don't believe me? Read the book.

I strongly recommend "In with the Devil". You will learn more truth.

Couldn't Stop Reading, Filled With Surprises, A Great Read
By Gary Chatmon
I stumbled across In With the Devil because I liked the co-author's other book. Usually, I read detectives stories, but this true crime book had more suspense for me than any fiction. I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened. Really, it's two stories. The first story is about James "Jimmy" Keene, the son of a policeman who ends up as a drug dealer and gets a 10-year sentence. He serves only a few months, meeting all these amazing criminals along the way (Jesse Jackson's brother, the head of Chicago's Mafia, etc.) before he is offered a deal for an early release. He has to go undercover to a bizarre maximum penitentiary for crazy federal prisoners and make friends with a serial killer named Larry Hall. If he can get him to confess to two murders and tell him where he buried one girl, Keene goes free. Yes, let me repeat again, this is all true. And you can't believe the things that happen to him along the way--from some mob boss who doesn't want him to hang out with serial killers to fights with lunatics. Intertwined with Keene's story is the second story of why this whole scheme was necessary. Although Hall probably killed more than 20 teenage girls, a lot of people in Indiana where he is from thought he was innocent. Including the police! Cops were even going to testify for him in his trial. It turns out that the police don't know anything about serial killers. Also, that the FBI doesn't give them much help. All the stuff you see in the movies or on TV in shows like Dexter or CSI is totally wrong. Meanwhile, the evidence they got on Hall included his diary, so you end up inside his head as he looks for victims. By the time you finish this book, you will probably know more about serial killers than most police departments, which is more frightening than any made-up horror story.

Artisan Pizza and Flatbread in Five Minutes a Day
1PIZZA AND FLATBREAD ARE THE FASTEST BREADS WE MAKE: STORING THE DOUGH MAKES THE DIFFERENCEBy the time we finished our second bread cookbook, we came to a basic truth: our pizzas and flatbreads were the fastest and often the most beloved recipes in our repertoire. Why? Because unlike loaf breads, they require little or no rest time after shaping them. So if you have a batch of our stored dough in the fridge (where it's been developing richer flavor over its storage life), and you've preheated your oven, you can be as little as ten minutes away from piping hot pizza, or even less for fresh pita flatbread. For busy people, there is no quicker dinner--as always, active time is under five minutes a day, because you spread the preparation time for your premixed dough over many pizzas and flatbreads. We've included soups, dips, and spreads that turn flatbreads or pizzas into a complete and speedy meal. Ingredients will include grains and toppings from around the world, as well as healthier alternatives where possible. So this book can become the basis for entire meals that are perfect for busy households.New pizzerias are popping up all over the United States, and pizza remains the nation's number one purchased meal. Despite this, there aren't many pizzacookbooks on the market today. And most recipes rely on dough that yields just one precious pie--not an option for most busy people. We have a voracious appetite for pizza, and so do our readers (that's what they told us on our Web site). Making your own pizza is much easier than it looks, and the options for toppings and crust mean that there's a world of variety. As in all our books, the secret to baking it fresh every day is that the dough is on hand, in your refrigerator, all the time. Storing the dough makes all the difference. Since you only mix once, but bake up to eight pizzas or flatbreads over a couple of weeks, you divide the prep time over all the pizzas and flatbreads you make from the batch.Whether you're an old hand at baking or a novice, our helpful tips will let you perfect your pies. We start with basics in Chapter 2 (Ingredients), Chapter 3 (Equipment), and Chapter 4 (Tips and Techniques). And then you can start baking exquisite pies with our Master Recipe (Chapter 5).Photography copyright © 2012 by Mark Luinenburg

With this book, it'll be hard to NOT make pizza!
By I Do The Speed Limit
According to the authors of this cook book, the "secret" to creating "quick" and great-tasting pizza and flatbreads is simply this: Mix up lots of dough at one time and store in the frig--you'll gather and mix simple ingredients one time, then over the course of a week or two, you will take just a few minutes to drag the dough container out of the frig, separate a piece from the batch, roll it out, get your toppings on and get it into the oven or onto the grill. So--big decision here--before you purchase this cook book, decide if you're willing to eat flatbread several times a week. OR, since this is such a great idea, work your thought process around to "Who best to share this windfall with?" Actually, the only thing that might hold you back is finding room in your frig for a round 5- or 6-quart container to hold your dough.......

(Of course the "five minute" claim does not include creating your toppings, preheating your oven or grill, or baking. That time's not going to shorten up any which way you try to work it.)

Besides the recipes for large amounts of dough, there are other small batch recipes also. So, there are quite a lot of options available in the book--easily something for everyone. Plus there are all kinds of sauce recipes and suggestions/descriptions for all kinds of cheeses and toppings. And while these authors have their favorite equipment--based on their vast experience--they also list many alternatives. So, basically, you can use whatever you have at hand. So much leeway here! So much room for creativity! So much room for variation! So much room for improvisation! So many suggestions for dealing with time constraints, $$$ constraints and cooking methods! The authors make it hard for anyone to come up with an excuse to NOT make pizza and flatbreads.....

There are many thin crust pizzas with lots of variations--plenty of options for toppings. But there are not many thick-crust pizza recipes--and the recipe for my personal favorite: Chicago-style, is not really "Chicago-style". But there is a thick-crust Sicilian-style pizza with onions that I can't wait to try. I'm also looking forward to making the flour tortillas or Caribbean roti.

To sum up one of my personal philosophies: "Communication is the key." These cook book authors are experts at communicating, and they carry it to the extreme in this book--and I "love" them and the book because of it. Plus, there's even more info at their web site PizzaIn5.com. So, if you are willing to absorb all the instructions, advice and tips that they offer, it's hard to make a mistake.

If you want to create dough the day you get your cook book, these are the simple ingredients to have on hand--of course there are many other choices, but this will get you going: Regular supermarket, unbleached all-purpose white flour; granulated yeast--doesn't matter "active dry", "instant", etc.; salt--ideally Morton Kosher, because that is what was used to test the recipes (but equivalents are listed for table and coarser salts); and for some recipes: granulated or any natural sugar, olive oil or unsalted butter. How simple is that? After mixing the dough, you'll be able to use it in 5 hours (2 hours room temperature + 3 hours in the frig) or you can store it for up to 14 days.

Good Concept, Good Pizza
By AmandaGal
This book is not as life changing as the original Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking. If you have that book, you probably already understand how you can apply the concepts to flatbread. I've used a modified version of their original bread recipe to make pizza for years (they do have a pizza recipe in that book). If you don't have that book and love all breads, I highly recommend it.

The basic concept is the same as the original book. Make a huge batch of dough at one time, and as the dough ages it turns out to be kind of sourdoughy in flavor. No kneading, very little mixing. It's a great way to make great tasting bread or pizza. It's a really moist, a little hard to work with dough. You get used to working with it. When I was really doing my own bread all the time, it really did only take about 5 minutes of my time to get a loaf in the oven (the five minutes doesn't take into account baking time).

This book is great you just want to learn how to make an easy, homemade pizza crust. It has some recipes for small batches too, if you're not feeding a pizza army. Lots of variations and tips aimed at pizza and other flatbread like naan and pita bread.

It also has some information on sauces and toppings for pizza, but I find it weak in the respect. It's really a dough book.

Another weakness is that it claims to have "Gluten-free" and "Whole Grain" recipes. It does have a gluten-free recipe, but I'm not fond of it. I've found better and easier gluten-free pizza recipes on the Internet. So, if you're looking for specific advice on gluten-free dough, don't go for this this one. It's just vogue to have it thrown in as a option.

I only gave this book three stars because, while it's a good book and it will get the job done, I think the original book offers much more and is a more complete package. While I recommend this one to pizza lovers, I recommend the other one to anyone who loves bread-like products.

Solid book, extensive pizza recipes
By lapis
I also own the original "Artisan Bread in Five Minutes," so I was looking forward to seeing how they adapted it for pizza crust. I love, love pizza and am constantly in search of the perfect thin, crispy, Italian-style crust for homemade pizza.

Like the original artisan bread book, the killer feature of this book is the ease of making the dough. You literally mix five ingredients together, either by hand or using an electric mixer, let it sit for at least 2 hours, then use it regularly for up to two weeks. It just doesn't get easier than that. (The trick is to make a very wet dough. If you haven't made a wet dough before, you may be surprised at how sticky it really is, but you'll get used to it quickly.)

After introductory sections on equipment, ingredients, and general tips (including helpful ones on how thick to roll out the dough for different effects), they give a series of thin crust recipes. They start with ones using unbleached flour, which I guess is supposed to be the easiest basic crust, and then move through a couple of variations culminating in using low-protein "00 flour," like you can get from King Arthur Flour.

Like I said, I've been in search of a great homemade pizza crust for a long time, so I ordered the 00 flour from King Arthur on the first day. It hasn't arrived yet, but they also give a recipe for making a low-protein flour crust using a combination of cake flour and unbleached flour. I tried that first, since I'm way beyond needing another basic unbleached flour crust recipe.

So how did this first crust turn out? It was definitely a more tender dough because of the cake flour than I've been used to with pizza dough, and the result was, indeed, crispier than I've made before. I'm encouraged. The taste was a bit flat, but I think that is because I used the dough right after the 2 hour rise. Based on my experience with the Artisan Bread book (and they point it out in this one as well), the flavor deepens over time. I'm excited to try the recipe with the 00 flour to see if I can get it even lighter and crisper. I use a lodge cast-iron pan to bake my pizzas, btw. I like the result much better than either a pizza stone or without anything under it in the oven. I also blind baked the crust for a couple of minutes on each side, something they offer as an option as well. It improves the crispness.

The authors are weak, IMHO, on tomato sauce recipes. It's the most prevalent sauce used on pizza, and I would have preferred more discussion and variation. However, they have a few other interesting sauce recipes including a pesto recipe (the traditional one) and a unique homemade BBQ sauce recipe, which I like a lot. Later chapters in the book include recipes for flatbread, deep dish pizza, and even dessert pizzas. They also include a couple of chapters on alternative uses for the dough, like in making pita and naan. They even provide some dip recipes to go along with those breads, which is a nice bonus, and they included a random curried lentil soup recipe. It's not what I would have expected in a pizza book, but the recipe looks fantastic, to tell you the truth. I'm definitely going to make it.

One thing I love is that they include ingredient weights in addition to measurements. Besides being more exact, weights make cooking *so much easier.* You just put the bowl on the scale and add the ingredients by weight. You don't even need measuring cups or spoons. Love it.

I own Reinhart's "American Pie" book, as well as sundry pastry/baking books that all include pizza crust recipes. I'm excited to have this one in my collection, and it's the first to recommend the low-protein flour that I've seen. The tips are great, the pizza topping recipes are interesting and varied (except for the tomato sauce recipes!), and the ease and benefit of making dough once and using it regularly for up to two weeks cannot be overstated.

Lockdown: Escape from Furnace 1, by Alexander Gordon Smith

Furnace Penitentiary: the world's most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth's surface. Convicted of a murder he didn't commit, sentenced to life without parole, "new fish" Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison.

Together with a bunch of inmates―some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers―Alex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace's deeper, darker purpose, Alex's actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that's hidden from the eyes of the world.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—"Beneath heaven is hell. Beneath hell is Furnace." That's 14-year-old Alex's description of the underground prison a mile below the surface of the earth where he and other teen boys are incarcerated for life. The first title (Farrar, Straus, 2009) in Alexander Gordon Smith's new series begins when the protagonist is caught by strange silver-eyed men as he and a buddy are in the midst of a house burglary. Resigned to jail time, Alex is shocked when he's framed by these ghostly black-suited figures who pull guns and murder his pal right in front of him. Pleas of innocence are ignored and Alex lands in Furnace. Gangs bully everyone, the food is disgusting slop, bizarre guard dogs tear inmates apart, and boys are arbitrarily dragged away late at night and return as killing automatons. When all seems lost, Alex and his savvy cellmate devise an escape plan. Last minute calamities bring the plan to the brink of disaster, and a cliffhanger ending definitely carries listeners to the next installment. Using a variety of accents, Alex Kalajzic captures the teen's terrors and occasional black humor as well as the guard's monotone menace. Themes of fear and brutality are frequent and descriptions are occasionally visceral, but none of the scenes are gratuitous. Discussions about the consequence of bad choices, loyalty between friends, and prison life are among the topics that spring from this story, but male audiences will find the fast-paced survival saga most appealing. From Booklist
Positing a near-future backlash against teen crime (and teens in general), Smith sets his series opener in a squalid prison for juvenile offenders built deep underground and patrolled by surgically altered supermen with vicious, skinless dogs. Framed (like a suspicious number of his fellow inmates) for a murder he did not commit, Alex is plunged into a desperate struggle for survival amid constant sirens, lurid lighting, nightmares, gang violence, and terrifying encounters with the prison’s scary guardians. Smith establishes a quick pace with an opening chase described in staccato prose, closes with a convoluted but explosive escape for Alex and a handful of allies, and in between crafts a picture of prison life less raw and hideous than what is found in, for instance, Adam Rapp’s Buffalo Tree (1997), but frightening enough to boost reader interest in sequels. Grades 6-9. --John Peters

LOCKDOWN
By Haley Mathiot
My summary: Alex was like any other boy. Go to school, hang out with his group, and control the monkey bars. But when he started stealing, his life changed for the worse. Out of nowhere, his best friend is murdered, and he is framed for it. he is sent to the child prison: a Hell hole. Worse than Hell. Furnace. When he's there, he is disgusted with the way people live. Kids do hard labor like chipping rock. Gangs kill kids. and he isn't the only innocent person who was framed. But there's no hope of escape. Nobody can escape furnace. Or at least, that's what they all say. But that's only because nobody ever has...

What I felt: Personally, the first time I looked at the cover, I found it just a little disturbing. I thought "eh, I doubt very seriously I'll like that book. But hey--they want to send me a free book? I'll take a free book." So no, I didn't really like the cover. They could have done much better, either artistically or graphically or even with the colors. But that's just me as an artist and a girl :D so I did judge it. boy was that a mistake.

The first sentence of this book seemed to grab me by the neck: "If I stopped running, I was dead." From there, the entire book held me and wouldn't let me go, from that first sentence to the very end. In fact, it held me after the end, too. I distinctly remember my blood racing, heart beating, sweating, adrenalin searing through my veins while I read this book! It was breathtaking and riveting to the last word. And even after the last word. I sat there, staring at the blank page, gasping and panting like a dog from lack of oxygen from reading a book. (that doesn't happen very often, people.)

Characters: The characters in this book were very relatable. They weren't super people, they were real. They handled the horrific experiences of Furnace the same way I would have--screaming in their sleep, crying, throwing up from the horrors.

Writing: the writing was very good--not one of those books where the author just says what he wants to say. Alexander Gordon Smith followed my creative writing teachers' first rule: Show, don't tell. It was an amazing thing to read, the language was very full in vocabulary, and it had good prose. There wasn't any really bad foul language either, like some of the other teen books I've been reading lately.

Recommendation: this book is a thriller, not a horror book, even though it's mildly graphic (mildly. Not really that bad. Descriptive enough to be kinda gross at times... but hey, it could be just because I'm a girl.). It's not the most horrific book I've ever read, but it's certainly not for an eight-year-old. Personally I'd recommend it for anyone fourteen and up (but that's just me).

I hope everyone gets a chance to read this book! It ranked my highest list: up with Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Not only was the writing very good, but the plot was thick and complicated, intricately laid out, and mind boggling, and the characters were real people.

Perfect Pulp-Style Page-Turner
By The Music Man
If this was the 1930s, I could easily imagine Alexander Gordon Smith's "Lockdown" as being snapped up and serialized in "Weird Tales" or "Amazing Stories". His fiction has the same scope and appeal that "Conan" author Robert E. Howard's does. "Lockdown isn't great literature; rather, it's a pure pulp story, very much like the Doc Savage and Kull The Conquerer were in their time, and that's a compliment. There's a real talent in being able to pen a breathless page-turner, a book that veers so closely to the absurd at times that I wanted to chuckle even as I was curious about what would happen next. The plot is simple enough - a 14-year-old boy gets caught doing a minor crime, and due to a savage new law put into place, gets sent to Furnace - a prison that's as dark and gritty as it's name, with no hope of paroll. There are savage dogs, unstoppable guards, jaw-droppingly harsh punishments, and blood - lots of blood. Plus, the entire complex is hiding something; the warden seems not-of-this-world, and it takes our protagonist all his wits and strength to avoid the roaming gangs of thugs who rule this inner world. Smith's prose is brutal and cracks with all the force of a whip; and if the novel descends into melodrama a bit too much, it's all for the good. The author has created an alternate reality that's heightened in every respect; perfect reading for teen boys who want something meaty to chew on. I admit, I'm looking forward to the sequel: "Solitary" due out Fall 2010.

A great book, but certainly for older readers
By Renna
Ooh. I still have the chills. This book was delightfully disturbing. It was The Hunger Games, meets The Maze Runner. I found myself on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. It's oh-so-very creepy & cruel to children. Which is my only warning, though that's a pretty big warning.

This book was surprisingly clean when it comes to language. After all, a bunch of teenage boys in a prison that the cover describes as worse than hell probably wouldn't have the best language, but the swearing wasn't extreme at all. Mind you, that doesn't mean there wasn't any swearing, but it didn't bother me too much, and I'm quite sensitive to it.

This book may end up giving me nightmares, but it was worth it. I love books with a good mystery.

If you don't mind horror-books, and you liked The Maze Runner, and you're okay with characters that are FAR too young to be dealing with that kind of stuff, then check out Lockdown: Escape From Furnace

Summary:

This book is creepy, and definitely for older teen readers, but oh-so-very good.

I'm Going to College---Not You!: Surviving the College Search with Your ChildFrom St. Martin's Griffin

Acceptance by a top college is more than a gold star on a high school graduate's forehead today. It has morphed into the ultimate "good parenting" stamp of approval--the better the bumper sticker, the better the parent, right? Parents of juniors and seniors in high school fret over SAT scores and essays, obsessed with getting their kids into the right college, while their children push for independence.

I'm Going to College---Not You! is a resource for parents, written by parents who've been in their shoes. Kenyon College dean Jennifer Delahunty shares her unique perspective (and her daughter's) on one of the toughest periods of parenting, and has assembled a top-notch group of writers that includes best-selling authors, college professors and admissions directors, and journalists. Their experiences with the difficult balancing act between control freak and resource answer questions like:

--how can a parent be less of a "helicopter" (hovering) and more of a "booster rocket" (uplifting)?
--what do you do when your child wants to put off college to become a rock star?
and
--how will you keep from wanting to kill each other?

From Booklist
As a parent and dean of admissions at Kenyon College, Delahunty has witnessed the stress of the college search and admissions process from the inside and the outside. She offers a collection of essays from both perspectives. Parents recall the process as the “last dance of parenting” because of the implication that where a child goes to college is somehow a reflection on the parent. Essays range from hilarious to painful as parents confess to being whipsawed by emotions, sometimes making the process more about themselves than their children, and mixing in memories of their own benighted college selection process. Admissions professionals, with a far broader perspective, offer calm and solid advice on how to help without taking over the process and how to find the best fit for the student. Among the contributors, reflecting on everything from the beginning application process through move-in day, are Anna Quindlen, Jane Hamilton, and the Neurotic Parent blogger as well as admissions directors of Smith and Colby colleges. Parents will enjoy the humor, drama, and poignancy of this collection. --Vanessa Bush

Review

“A great guide and must-read for any prospective parent through the power and powerlessness of their child's college search. Mine included my selfish queries into the various schools school colors ... I then encouraged my daughter to choose the school whose colors I looked good in. I am only kidding a little. (Deep purple and black did look great on me.) I wish I had had this book then... ” ―Jamie Lee Curtis, actress, children's book author, mother of a recent college graduate

She speaks the truth
By mikie
Dean Delahunty speaks the truth. Maybe it resonates more because I have two daughters. More importantly, I, too, am in the admission field and have met all of the persona portrayed in these well-written vignettes. Parents need to be confident that their first 17 years of raising their children should be a sufficient platform from which their progeny can take flight. For those moms and dads who have not yet let junior leave the nest even briefly, the college search process becomes more about them than the child, and this sad to watch.

Thank you to the writiers and for Ms Delahunty for cajoling them into sharing their stories. School counselors should keep this book in plain view in their offices.

Calmed Me Down
By JK-NJ
I gradually became a stressed out and nervous parent from this crazy college admissions process and needed some relief. This book was the perfect medicine - it really calmed me down and made me laugh out loud! Told from many points of view, these stories are just so right-on - you can really relate and get some insight from other perspectives. Makes you realize you are not alone and how silly and unproductive some of your concerns really are.

Based on the family from the bestselling Love In A Nutshell, the story of an heiress longing to marry for love or not at all

From The New York Times bestselling writing duo Janet Evanovich and Dorien Kelly, comes the story of a young woman's search for true love. Caroline Maxwell would like nothing more than to join her brother, Eddie, and his friend, Jack Culhane, on their adventures. While Jack and Eddie are off seeing the world, buying up businesses and building wildly successful careers, Caroline's stuck at home frightening off the men her mother hopes will ask for her hand in marriage. When her mother sets her sights on the questionable Lord Bremerton as a possible suitor, Caroline struggles with her instincts and the true nature of her heart. She longs for adventure, passion, love, and most of all . . . Jack Culhane, an unconventional Irish-American bachelor with new money and no title. A completely unacceptable suitor in the eyes of Caroline's mother. But Caroline's dark hair, brilliant eyes and quick wit have Jack understanding just why it is people fall in love and get married.

Set in New York City in 1894, The Husband List is an American gilded age romantic mystery. It evokes memories of the lavish lifestyles and social expectations of the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers―a time when new money from the Americas married Old World social prestige and privilege. Dresses by Worth, transcontinental ocean voyages, lavish parties, a little intrigue, and a lot of romance await in, The Husband List.

From Publishers Weekly
The first historical romance by Evanovich and Kelly (Love in a Nutshell) shines with the glitter of New York City in the advanced year of 1894. American heiress Caroline Maxwell doesn't want much in life, just independence and passion in a marriage. But that's too much to ask of high society, especially as her mother is set on marrying her off to a mysterious English duke. Caroline prefers her brother's close friend Jack Culhane, who's in no hurry to wed and doesn't fit her mother's idea of a husband. The authors paint a clear picture of the luxurious lives of the ultra-wealthy: cycling in Central Park, scampering around Newport's Cliff Walk, and taking tea in London's finest drawing rooms. Whether running away from her governess or from the duke, captivating Caroline maintains her feisty streak, and her straightforward character is fully fleshed out with intelligence and humor. Caroline's romantic kisses with Jack produce more sexual tension than most bodice-rippers, and an older couple's rekindled romance adds a sweet touch. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Evanovich, renowned for her best-selling Stephanie Plum series, again joins forces with Kelly (Love in a Nutshell, 2011), and this time the duo takes on the historical-romance genre. It’s 1894, and American heiress Caroline Maxwell spends her days suffering through her mother’s attempts at setting her up with royalty, a duke being the rank of choice. Caroline doesn’t want to be a duchess. She wants to be an adventurer and travel the world, experiencing everything life throws at her. Unlike Caroline, her brother, Eddie, isn’t the target of family marriage expectations. He and his best friend, Jack Culhane, have explored exotic places and made a lot of money while doing so. While Mama plans a costume ball to show off their wealth to Caroline’s prospective husband, Caroline plans her quest for freedom. Little does this feisty, funny heroine realize her plans will include Jack. Those who have read Love in a Nutshell will discover that this collaboration is a subtle sort of prequel. --Shelley Mosley

Not worth the money or the time.
By L. Gaspardo
Major disappointment with this one. I read Janet because her characters are usually quirky and unique. This novel was a regurgitated 19th century Romance novel with a formulatic plot: young rich heiress with overbearing mother who wants her to marry a member of the English peerage. Typical rebellionn on the part of the heroine who is in love (typically) with her brother's best friend. They were childhood playmates and of course she envies the freedom of the males in society and wants "true" love, not an arranged marriage. The mother is determined to see her daughter marry the English blueblood who (of course) is evil and has a dark past. The hero (childhood crush) realizes (surprise, surprise) that he is not really a confirmed bachelor and, my oh my, how his best friend's sister has turned into a beauty and he really is in love with her. Mama who has never let our heroine out of her sight, suddenly decides its okay to leave her daughter alone with her maid at the falling down estate of the evil Lord. Hero rushes in to save her and you know the ending.

The characters are shallow and barely developed. I neither liked them or loved them. They were just boring and predictable. The plot was also boring and predictable with some major changes in the characters attitudes and actions without enough substance to justify the change. For example, our heroine's brother who is just bored with society and laizze faire about his sister getting married off to the English Lord, suddenly decides after a Polo match against the Lord where he is injured because of a deliberate attack aimed at the Hero, that the Lord is evil and his sister needs protection. Mama just decides that its okay to leave the daughter who she hasn't left out of her sight with the evil Lord. Give me a break!!! You cannot do justice to a 19th century Romance novel in 300 pages.

Evanovich needs to stick with what she does best: quirky heroines who make us laugh, not formulatic dreck that's been done thousands of times by others and done much better by others. I will no longer pre-order Janet's books as this one was so bad that I wouldn't pay 50 cents for it at a garage sale. The cover deceived me into thinking it was another one of her "screwball" romances.

Yuk!
By Catherine D. Morgan
I'm a huge Janet Evanovich fan. I even love her old books-before she was famous romances. Even then she had quirky characters and plot twists. This book had none of the fun or humor I've come to expect tron a Janet Evanovich book. Boring predictable formula romance. Save your money.
