In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, by James Keene, Hillel Levin

Featured on Dateline and CNN, the true story of a young man destined for greatness on the football field―until a few wrong turns led him to a ten-year prison sentence. He was offered an impossible mission: Coax a confession out of a fellow inmate, a serial killer, and walk free.

Jimmy Keene grew up outside of Chicago. Although he was the son of a policeman and rubbed shoulders with the city's elite, he ended up on the wrong side of the law and was sentenced to ten years with no chance of parole.

Just a few months into his sentence, Keene was approached by the prosecutor who put him behind bars. He had convicted a man named Larry Hall for abducting and killing a fifteen-year-old. Although Hall was suspected of killing nineteen other young women, there was a chance he could still be released on appeal. If Keene could get him to confess to two murders, there would be no doubt about Hall's guilt. In return, Keene would get an unconditional release from prison. But he could also get killed.

A story that gained national notoriety, this is Keene's powerful tale of peril, violence, and redemption.

From Booklist
In the late 1990s, Keene, a policeman’s son, was busted for dealing drugs. He wound up with a sentence that put him behind bars for a minimum of 10 years, but less than a year into the sentence, he had an unexpected visitor: the prosecutor who put him in prison. The prosecutor had also convicted another man, a murderer, and he suspected there were a lot of bodies still unaccounted for. He wanted Keene to go undercover and get the killer to confess; in return, Keene would be set free. Keene and coauthor Levin structure the book like a mystery novel, dramatizing events that Keene didn’t observe firsthand, and telling the story in the third person (“Jimmy nonchalantly grabbed it with his cuffed hands . . . .”). It’s a clever way to narrate a true-crime tale, more involving, somehow, than a straight first-person account might have been. Recommend this fascinating, suspenseful book to readers of both true crime and crime fiction. --David Pitt

I read it for Jessica....
By Jennifer Wardrip
Very hard for me to read this one. I grew up with Jessica Roach, the girl Larry Hall was eventually convicted of murdering. She was four years younger than I was; I was 18 when she went missing. We grew up in the same very small town (Georgetown, IL, population 3,600), belonged - at the time - to the same very tight-knit religious sect (Jehovah's Witnesses), and I never in a million years believed something like that could happen in my town, to someone I knew. The story saddened me, but knowing that Mr. Hall is in prison for the rest of his life brings some measure of relief.

I admit that I picked up the book for Jessica's story, but I was sucked in by the ups and downs of the author's personal history. He was a young man who paid dearly for his mistakes, but in the end, doing what he did to help bring justice for Jessica and Larry Hall's other victims is truly marvelous.

Kudos to James Keene for his bravery. Jessica would thank you if she could.

Unique, original, incredible
By Robb O'Brien
Jimmy Keene's unique and original story combined with Hillel Levin's investigative and explicitly detailed writing makes "In with the Devil" a true page turner. One would think this is fiction...it is not, although I found myself continually wondering how the story would end.

Levin goes to great lengths to give readers the stories within the story with his unbiased descriptions of the main characters lives and upbringings. You can feel the characters' emotions and understand the reasons behind their behavior.

In addition, the serial killer myths Levin disposes of are both shocking and upsetting. Do you realize their is no central serial killer or missing persons database that the FBI or other state law enforcement agencies can share? Don't believe me? Read the book.

I strongly recommend "In with the Devil". You will learn more truth.

Couldn't Stop Reading, Filled With Surprises, A Great Read
By Gary Chatmon
I stumbled across In With the Devil because I liked the co-author's other book. Usually, I read detectives stories, but this true crime book had more suspense for me than any fiction. I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened. Really, it's two stories. The first story is about James "Jimmy" Keene, the son of a policeman who ends up as a drug dealer and gets a 10-year sentence. He serves only a few months, meeting all these amazing criminals along the way (Jesse Jackson's brother, the head of Chicago's Mafia, etc.) before he is offered a deal for an early release. He has to go undercover to a bizarre maximum penitentiary for crazy federal prisoners and make friends with a serial killer named Larry Hall. If he can get him to confess to two murders and tell him where he buried one girl, Keene goes free. Yes, let me repeat again, this is all true. And you can't believe the things that happen to him along the way--from some mob boss who doesn't want him to hang out with serial killers to fights with lunatics. Intertwined with Keene's story is the second story of why this whole scheme was necessary. Although Hall probably killed more than 20 teenage girls, a lot of people in Indiana where he is from thought he was innocent. Including the police! Cops were even going to testify for him in his trial. It turns out that the police don't know anything about serial killers. Also, that the FBI doesn't give them much help. All the stuff you see in the movies or on TV in shows like Dexter or CSI is totally wrong. Meanwhile, the evidence they got on Hall included his diary, so you end up inside his head as he looks for victims. By the time you finish this book, you will probably know more about serial killers than most police departments, which is more frightening than any made-up horror story.
