Victory at Yorktown: A Novel (George Washington Series), by Newt Gingrich, William R. Forstchen

New York Times bestselling authors Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen pen the triumphant conclusion to their George Washington series-a novel of leadership, brotherhood, loyalty, and the victory of the American Revolutionary cause.

1781. After three years in a bitter stalemate, General Washington decides to embark on one of the most audacious moves in American military history. He will take nearly his entire army out of New Jersey and New York and force march it more than three hundred miles in complete secrecy. He must pray that the French navy is successful in blockading Chesapeake Bay, so that he can fall upon British General Cornwallis at Yorktown. It is a campaign ladened with "Ifs" but the deadlock must be broken, otherwise the American spirit, after six long years of war, will crumble.

A tour de force narrative of one of America's most important heroes, Victory at Yorktown vividly portrays Washington's unparalleled courage, determination, and patriotism as he leads his professional army, once a "rabble in arms," to the heat of the Battle of Yorktown to execute the Revolution's most decisive contest.

From Booklist
After chronicling the Continental army’s bitter winter at Valley Forge, Gingrich and Forstchen leap ahead several years in their George Washington series. In 1781, the British have a stranglehold on New York, and the revolutionary momentum has all but stalled. A bold and decisive move is needed to end the impasse, and General Washington hatches a risky plan to engage the enemy forces at Yorktown. All they need to do is to march 300 miles south without being detected to launch a surprise offensive. Of course, none of this is accomplished in a vacuum, and Washington and company must count on master spy Peter Wellsley and their French allies for both support and diversion. Following the historical record, the authors combine real-life and fictional figures as all roads lead toward the conclusion of the bitterly fought Revolutionary War. High Demand Backstory: Although Gingrich and Forstchen’s military sagas are always popular, count on increased interest in America’s first—and only truly bipartisan—president this election season. --Margaret Flanagan

An important read
By Amazon Customer
Although classified as fiction because of the story within the presentation of the history of our country, this book reminds us of the magnificent character of the citizens and warriors who gave us our independence. We were always told how great a man George Washington was. This book provides even more insight to his bravery, leadership and military prowess.

We all know how Gen. Lafayette helped fight the British, but after reading this story, I have a much better understanding of how important the French soldiers and navy were in defeating the British. I don't think I'll listen to any more French "military" jokes.

Well Researched, Well Written, Well Done!
By Bill Almond
Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen have brought the Historical Novel to an art form. Their research is fantastic which gives them the ability and liberty to add in characters that were not a part of history but allows all of us to truly understand what the real characters in the story were actually going through. That illumination is what helps to have these stories be the page turners that they are, while allowing you, the reader, to feel as though you were there and can feel and taste what those individuals went through. These two men, through all of their works, remind us that history does not only have to inform us, but rather, if done right, can and should captivate us as well. That mission is once again accomplished with Victory at Yorktown.

General Washington and his loyal staff and Army have emerged from Valley Forge and have shown their new mettle to the British and Hessians. However, if this Army thought that that meant that this war was over then they are now in for some more difficult lessons. Still dealing with funding issues, a less than helpful Congress, starvation, lack of appropriate clothing and materials and the final outcome still completely in doubt, Washington once again has to dig deep into his own personal well of strength, fortitude and moral character to continue to lead this desperate group toward the goal of Liberty. Thru the sheer force of his own will and that of his incredibly loyal staff Washington creates a last ditch effort to end this war once and for all, one way or the other. In what is an incredibly large gamble, built on so many variables and moving pieces Washington and his army of ordinary citizens make a play to change history and the course of a new nation.

Once again, the story is also told through the eyes of Peter Wellesley, now an experienced officer of Washington's army, and his childhood friend turned enemy, Allen van Dorn, who has also risen to the level of officer and respect within the British Army. Their part in the story helps to keep the pages turning until you cannot take the suspense nor bear the potential outcome.

Fun history... shouldn't every story be told this way!
