From Publishers Weekly
The first historical romance by Evanovich and Kelly (Love in a Nutshell) shines with the glitter of New York City in the advanced year of 1894. American heiress Caroline Maxwell doesn't want much in life, just independence and passion in a marriage. But that's too much to ask of high society, especially as her mother is set on marrying her off to a mysterious English duke. Caroline prefers her brother's close friend Jack Culhane, who's in no hurry to wed and doesn't fit her mother's idea of a husband. The authors paint a clear picture of the luxurious lives of the ultra-wealthy: cycling in Central Park, scampering around Newport's Cliff Walk, and taking tea in London's finest drawing rooms. Whether running away from her governess or from the duke, captivating Caroline maintains her feisty streak, and her straightforward character is fully fleshed out with intelligence and humor. Caroline's romantic kisses with Jack produce more sexual tension than most bodice-rippers, and an older couple's rekindled romance adds a sweet touch. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Evanovich, renowned for her best-selling Stephanie Plum series, again joins forces with Kelly (Love in a Nutshell, 2011), and this time the duo takes on the historical-romance genre. It’s 1894, and American heiress Caroline Maxwell spends her days suffering through her mother’s attempts at setting her up with royalty, a duke being the rank of choice. Caroline doesn’t want to be a duchess. She wants to be an adventurer and travel the world, experiencing everything life throws at her. Unlike Caroline, her brother, Eddie, isn’t the target of family marriage expectations. He and his best friend, Jack Culhane, have explored exotic places and made a lot of money while doing so. While Mama plans a costume ball to show off their wealth to Caroline’s prospective husband, Caroline plans her quest for freedom. Little does this feisty, funny heroine realize her plans will include Jack. Those who have read Love in a Nutshell will discover that this collaboration is a subtle sort of prequel. --Shelley Mosley

Not worth the money or the time.
By L. Gaspardo
Major disappointment with this one. I read Janet because her characters are usually quirky and unique. This novel was a regurgitated 19th century Romance novel with a formulatic plot: young rich heiress with overbearing mother who wants her to marry a member of the English peerage. Typical rebellionn on the part of the heroine who is in love (typically) with her brother's best friend. They were childhood playmates and of course she envies the freedom of the males in society and wants "true" love, not an arranged marriage. The mother is determined to see her daughter marry the English blueblood who (of course) is evil and has a dark past. The hero (childhood crush) realizes (surprise, surprise) that he is not really a confirmed bachelor and, my oh my, how his best friend's sister has turned into a beauty and he really is in love with her. Mama who has never let our heroine out of her sight, suddenly decides its okay to leave her daughter alone with her maid at the falling down estate of the evil Lord. Hero rushes in to save her and you know the ending.

The characters are shallow and barely developed. I neither liked them or loved them. They were just boring and predictable. The plot was also boring and predictable with some major changes in the characters attitudes and actions without enough substance to justify the change. For example, our heroine's brother who is just bored with society and laizze faire about his sister getting married off to the English Lord, suddenly decides after a Polo match against the Lord where he is injured because of a deliberate attack aimed at the Hero, that the Lord is evil and his sister needs protection. Mama just decides that its okay to leave the daughter who she hasn't left out of her sight with the evil Lord. Give me a break!!! You cannot do justice to a 19th century Romance novel in 300 pages.

Evanovich needs to stick with what she does best: quirky heroines who make us laugh, not formulatic dreck that's been done thousands of times by others and done much better by others. I will no longer pre-order Janet's books as this one was so bad that I wouldn't pay 50 cents for it at a garage sale. The cover deceived me into thinking it was another one of her "screwball" romances.

Yuk!
By Catherine D. Morgan
I'm a huge Janet Evanovich fan. I even love her old books-before she was famous romances. Even then she had quirky characters and plot twists. This book had none of the fun or humor I've come to expect tron a Janet Evanovich book. Boring predictable formula romance. Save your money.
