Five Lieutenants: The Heartbreaking Story of Five Harvard Men Who Led America to Victory in World War I, by James Carl Nelson

James Carl Nelson tells the dramatic true story of five brilliant young soldiers from Harvard, a thrilling tale of combat and heroism

Five Lieutenants tells the story of five young Harvard men who took up the call to arms in the spring of 1917 and met differing fates in the maelstrom of battle on the Western Front in 1918. Delving deep into the motivations, horrific experiences, and ultimate fates of this Harvard-educated quintet―and by extension of the brilliant young officer class that left its collegiate and post-collegiate pursuits to enlist in the Army and lead America's rough-and-ready doughboys―Five Lieutenants presents a unique, timeless, and fascinating account of citizen soldiers at war, and of the price these extraordinary men paid while earnestly giving all they had in an effort to end "the war to end all wars."

Drawing upon the subjects' intimate, eloquent, and uncensored letters and memoirs, this is a fascinating microcosm of the American experience in the First World War, and of the horrific experiences and hardships of the educated class of young men who were relied upon to lead doughboys in the trenches and, ultimately, in open battle.

Writing with great knowledge of and sensitivity for his subject, Nelson ensures that the experiences, thoughts and aspirations of the young Harvard men of 1918 are not lost to future generations.'' --Publishers Weekly

''An intimate tracking of officers' perspectives during World War I...This eloquent work of the toll of war builds moving stories through a wealth of personal detail.'' --Kirkus Reviews

An amazing story told at a personal level
By George H. Hackett
Most of us know something of World War I,"The War to End all Wars"--a distinction that sadly lasted only a couple of decades. We have read or seen in films like "Gallipoli" the waves of men being cut down by machine-gun fire as they made one hopeless charge after another toward an enemy entrenchment only yards away. Trench warfare, with its putrid living conditions and questionable tactics became a shorthand for the futility and senseless of that war, and of any war.

"Five Lieutenants" depicts all this but on a personal, knowable level similar to recent World War II films like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Letters from Iwo Jima." But these are real stories of real people [disclosure: I am related to one of the subjects.] Using diaries, letters home and hard-to-find photographs, Nelson weaves together the story of five recent graduates of Harvard who chose to leave home and join the fight. The world, and the United States, were much smaller places back then. College graduates became officers, and much is made of the doubts some of these men had about commanding others on matters they knew almost nothing about. It's a long way from studying the Aeneid to ordering terrified men to creep toward machine-gun fire at night, in the mud. The beauty of this book lies not in the battle scenes, which are graphic, but in the depiction of the developing relationships among men from different backgrounds thrown together in circumstances more horrible than they could have imagined. The story thrives on details that only contemporaneous accounts can provide: the joy of an unexpected piece of chocolate found at the bottom of a rucksack, catching a few hours of rest in a barn on a thin layer of hay, one of the lieutenant's search during leave in Paris for his sister who was working there as a nurse. Nelson has given us a vivid piece of history and a heartwarming--and yes, heartbreaking--story of humanity.

An Intimate Look at the Journey to War of Five Young Men
By Gary L. Misch
This is a book about five young men who are at the peak of their game - students or recent graduates of Harvard University. With Europe at war, and the possibility of the United States being drawn in, they don't wait to be called; they undergo military training, in hopes of gaining a commission when the country enters the war. Nelson gives us a good taste of their pre war lives, before introducing life in the trenches. The climax, if the book can be said to have one, comes during the American assault on Cantigny. I won't spoil the read with all the details, but there is more than enough butchery, both death and maiming, to go around.

Given what we now know about the horrors of war on the western front, it's almost unreal to see these men so eager to prepare for war, and so fearful that they might not be found suitable by the Army regulars who train them. It is, however, an old story, that has only recently begun to change as military service begins to fall only on the very few (and darned few Harvard men).

Nelson does an excellent job of describing the conditions in the trenches, without rubbing the reader's faces in the horrors of it all. One might ask whether we need another book about World War I combat. Is the device of telling the story of these five men just that, a device? I say the more stories told, the better. These men's memories have passed into history; it's good for their stories, and their sacrifices, to be told.

History Comes Alive
By Samantha Lerman
Finally, and nearly a century after the carnage of World War 1 began, we have an American response to the Englishman Robert Graves's classic Great War memoir Goodbye to All That. And what a response it is! Where in his earlier book The Remains of Company D: A Story of the Great War Nelson mostly documented the experiences of the enlisted men in a single unit, in Five Lieutenants he turns his eye to another level, that of the educated class of men who though hardly trained themselves led the doughboy "grunts" into battle. Five Lieutenants is one of the most human and intimate accounts of men in battle that has ever resulted from any of our wars, and I can't recommend it too highly.
