The heiress of the subtitle was Marion du Pont, a steeplechase enthusiast. The teenage jockey was 17-year-old Bruce Hobbs, son of a trainer. And America’s horse was Battleship, born of Man o’ War, a small but strong Thoroughbred who became, in 1938, the first American horse to win the English Grand National steeplechase (which had been running, except for a brief break in WWI, since 1839). Although the book is titled after the horse, it’s really the story of Marion, a woman who so dedicated herself to Battleship that she nearly left everything else in her life behind, and of Bruce, who became the Grand National’s youngest winner and whose riding career was cut short a handful of years later. Author Ours, who also wrote Man o’ War (2006), clearly has a deep appreciation for racehorses, their riders, and the people who build their lives around them. About the Author
DOROTHY OURS is lifelong horse and racing enthusiast who worked for several years at America's National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Her first book, Man o' War: A Legend Like Lightning, was honored as runner-up for Thoroughbred racing's inaugural Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award. She has freelanced as a racing journalist and studied Battleship and his world as a John H. Daniels Research Fellow at the National Sporting Library in Middleburg, Virginia. Her B.F.A. in Theater came in handy while exploring the world of Randolph Scott.

Biography of Marion duPont with special emphasis on her horses:Trouble Maker, Annapolis & Battleship

At its core, this book is a historical biography of the first 45+ years Marion duPont (Somerville/Scott)'s life. The biography zeniths with Marion's win of the Grand National with her horse Battleship and a young jockey name Bruce Hobb.
The book is meticulous researched and contains an astounding amount of detail. The story of Marion begins with her great grandfather and grandfather and how the du Pont family first made their fortune. The time line moves to her father William du Pont: his early years, his first marriage, his divorce and subsequent marriage to Marion's mother (herself a divorcee). The book chronicles Marion's life at the family home of Montpelier, her close bond with her younger brother William, and how her childhood experiences shaped her passion for farming, hunting, sports, and all things horses.
The first 3/4's of the book details Marion's life and how she slowly begins building her own stables apart from her brother and father. It shows her fascination with Man o' War, and her goal of adding the Man o' War bloodline to her own stables. She finally achieves this goal with the purchase of Annapolis and then Battleship. Along the way the book also painstakingly describes her success with other horses in her stables. The book is almost a weekly summary of all the races she attended and entered throughout the years. A good portion of the book chronicles her horse Trouble Maker, including their unsuccessful attempt at the Grand National at Aintree. Throughout this portion of the book Battleship is mentioned occasionally, mostly to show his transition from track racer to hunter/jumper.
Interwoven with the main thread of Mario duPont are the life histories of Reg and Bruce Hobbs, Noel Laing and Carroll Bassett. Comprehensive histories of other characters are also detailed including Marion's second husband, the actor Randolph Scott.
It is not until 75% of the book is finished that Marion decides to send Battleship to England to prepare for the Grand Nation at Aintree. And nearly 80% completed before Bruce Hobbs first rides Battleship. The final chapters of the book are more focused on Marion and Battleship/Bruce. But the story lines are separate because while Battleship is in England (for almost 2 years), Marion is in the US trying to juggle her life in the East and her husband's life in Hollywood. It is not until 48 hours before Battleship's run in the Grand National that Marion arrives in England. Marion doesn't even meet Bruce Hobbs till the last few pages of the book.
From a historians point of view this book is a treasure trove of facts, people, places, and firsthand accounts of the horse centric life in the early 20th century. It is in essence a biography of Marion duPont, with Battleship and his win at Aintree begin just one of the many events described in the book. I guess I was just a little disappointed that Battleship wasn't the central character in a book entitled "Battleship".

A winner of a book about a winner of a horse

Battleship is one of the all time great racehorses along with his sire, Man O' War, Seabiscuit, Secretariat, etc. Author Dorothy Ours brings him to life along with his owner, heiress Marion DuPont, and jockey Bruce Hobbs. The depression era is made real along with the pre-WWII era. This is a wonderful piece of history.
Allusions are made to the novel made movie NATIONAL VELVET, and we also learn more about western star Randolph Scott who married Marion DuPont.
All in all, this is a great book for everyone: horse lovers, racing fans, history affectianados, and those who love good books. Highly recommended.

Triumph of the Underdogs

This tale documents the trials and triumphs of Battleship, a feisty little American horse who won the Britain's Grand National Steeplechase in 1938. It is also very much the story of Battleship's owner, heiress Marion DuPont and the young jockey Bruce Hobbs and his dad, Reg.
Impeccably researched and nicely written, it depicts the privileged but confining life of Marion DuPont. Somewhat retiring, she bucks expectations with multiple marriages, including eloping with movie star Randolph Scott. A genuine horse lover, she recognizes the winning spirit in the relatively small and unimpressive Battleship. Son of the legendary Man o'War, Battleship comes into his own in the chaotic and dangerous steeplechase races. It also examines the father son duo of shy young Bruce and publicity loving Reg. Reg in many ways is a stable door father, pushing his son to take risks in a dangerous sport. Bruce learns to trust his instincts.
It is hard to resist a book about the triumph of the underdogs. This is an easy read and generally kind to its subjects. Marion is portrayed sympathetically. Clearly intelligent and driven, she eschews the debutante route and is barred from corporate enterprise solely by reason of her gender. She seems to genuinely care for her horses which begs the question of why she would subject them to the brutality of racing in general and steeplechase in particular. The author does expose the rough and tumble world of racing without indictment or condemnation. Nor does she question the lives of luxury and indulgence that stand in stark contrast to the bleakness and scarcity suffered by most during the Depression. Still, this book portrays a talented horse and people determined to follow their dreams despite the challenges of the times. Recommended.
